Regression analysis according to Wikipedia is a statistical process for estimating the relationships among variables. It allows us to make predictions about future outcomes by estimating the relationship between two variables, where we can utilize what happened in the past to predict what can happen in the future.<\/p>\n<p>To run a regression analysis, we need two things:-<\/p>\n<p><strong>1- Dependent variable\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2- Independent Variable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this article, we will be using the <strong>traffic<\/strong> (Independent Variable) to forecast the <strong>revenue<\/strong> (Dependent variable). In general,\u00a0the independent variable is the <strong>cause<\/strong> and the dependent variable is the <strong>effect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-288\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/performance-forecast.png\" alt=\"performance-forecast\" width=\"197\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first thing we have to do is to determine if there is a correlation between our variables.\u00a0<strong>Correlation<\/strong> is a statistical measure that indicates the extent to which two or more variables fluctuate together.\u00a0In other words, it measures how two variables change in relation to each other.\u00a0In our example, we want to determine the nature of the relationship between traffic and revenue. On of the easiest way is to use is <span style=\"color: #000000;\">excel<\/span>:-<\/p>\n<h5>CORREL <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Excel<\/span> Formula<\/h5>\n<p>Through excel you can calculate the correlation between two variables using the CORREL function. The syntax of the formula is \u00a0<code>CORREL(ARRAY1, ARRAY2)<\/code><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-291\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/traffic-forecast.png\" alt=\"traffic-forecast\" width=\"263\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, the correlation between the traffic and the revenue in our case is:- 0.96<\/p>\n<p>If the number is closer to 1, it means there is a strong relationship between the two <span style=\"color: #000000;\">data<\/span> sets. If the number is close to 0, it means there is no or weak relationship between the two variables or in other words the relation between the two variables is Zero. So, in our case, the number is so close to 1 which means that there is a strong positive correlation between the traffic and revenue.<\/p>\n<h5>Create a Scatter Chart<\/h5>\n<p>Plot the independent variable on the x-axis (traffic) and the dependent variable on the y-axis (revenue).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-290\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/scatter-graph-excel-300x182.png\" alt=\"scatter-graph-excel\" width=\"435\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>Find the best trend line<\/h5>\n<p>This step is really important, because if you pick the wrong trend line, your forecast won\u2019t be accurate. After you made the scatter chart you need now a line to connect these dots. Right click on your <span style=\"color: #000000;\">data<\/span> point and select \u201c Add Trendline\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-293\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/trendline-graph-excel-300x196.png\" alt=\"trendline-graph-excel\" width=\"452\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are many types of trend line as you can see:-<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-294\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/trendlines-excel-189x300.png\" alt=\"trendlines-excel\" width=\"365\" height=\"579\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To figure out which one fits your <span style=\"color: #000000;\">data<\/span>, we have to calculate <strong>R<sup>2<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0or the <strong>coefficient of determination<\/strong> which is a number from 0 to 1 that describes how well a regression line fits a data set. In our case, it tells\u00a0us how well traffic can predict revenue. If the number is closer to 0, traffic is not a good predictor of revenue. If the number is closer to 1, traffic is a good predictor of revenue. To display R<sup>2<\/sup>, please see below:-<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-289\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/r2-forecast-trendline-300x121.png\" alt=\"r2-forecast-trendline\" width=\"660\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now you have to repeat the step for each line type till you know which line has the highest R<sup>2<\/sup> value. In our example, the linear trend line has the highest R<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>value which means it&#8217;s the best fit for our forecast.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-292\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/trend-lines-forecast-300x134.png\" alt=\"trend-lines-forecast\" width=\"463\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now to begin forecasting, select the type of trendline that has the highest R<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>value and then you need to insert in the forward section (of your trendline option) the number of periods into the future for which you want to forecast values.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-287\" src=\"https:\/\/optimizationup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/budget-forecast-300x117.png\" alt=\"budget-forecast\" width=\"608\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>Summary<\/h5>\n<p>Forecasting is not just guessing.
