The untold story of openstatus Our secret is out
The first paying users of openstatus thought they were buying software. In reality they were buying Maximilian Kaske and me going to their website every minutes. When we started openstatus, there was no magic. There was only a simple input where people could submit their url and us opening a new chrome tabs. Every time we noticed an issue we sent an email. That feedback became the blueprint. Step by step we turned each part of my own manual workflow into software. emailing came first then the form then we launch sleep rotation And finally website checking. Each improvement replaced something we used to do by hand. What emerged was not just a status page tool with uptime monitoring but the most loved opensource status page tool with uptime monitoring. All of this started with a input, sleep deprivation and the mentality to do things that don't scale.
