As a franchise, Star Trek has more “misunderstood antagonists” than outright villains. Often, the Federation just has misunderstandings with other alien species. But there is some outright villainy in the far future. And some of the most legendary antagonists in sci-fi history came from this franchise. In the season four finale of Star Trek: Discovery, “Coming Home,” voting rights advocate and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams makes an out-of-this-world cameo.

In only her second TV appearance following a guest spot on ABC’s Black-ish, Abrams made her Star Trek franchise debut as the United Earth president. Abrams, who has been vocal about being a fan of the shows, said in a behind-the-scenes video posted to her Twitter on Saturday that she wanted to be a part of the show, regardless of the role.

“Whatever the story was, I wanted to be a part of it because watching Michael Burnham come into her power as captain, watching this party-crew reclaim itself — not only in a new era but in a new space that is so reminiscent of what they remembered but so different — that, to me, speaks of why we do the work we do in politics,” she said. “It’s about giving people hope and giving them a better life and creating this vision of what is possible.”

If LiveJournal can not be accessed after March 11 because Russia is going to cut itself off from the global Internet (LJ is owned by a Russiaa company, if you did not know) do you have plans to post somewhere else?

William Shatner to Go Into Space

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin announced Monday actor William Shatner, 90, will be on the next Blue Origin flight alongside Audrey Powers, Blue Origin's vice president of mission and flight operations, Chris Boshuizen and Glen de Vries.

"I've heard about space for a long time now," Shatner said in a press release. "I'm taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle."

The New Shepard NS-18 flight will lift off October 12.

The journey will take 11 minutes and soar past the Kármán Line, the internationally recognized boundary of space.

Matt Shakman, who was recently nominated for an Emmy for his work directing WandaVision, is beaming into the Star Trek universe. He'll be directing the upcoming Untitled Star Trek Project for Paramount Pictures, with a script written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson. The first time that women will be writing a Trek movie script.

J.J. Abrams, who helmed both Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness and produced Star Trek Beyond, will be returning as a producer.

IDW Launching ‘Star Trek: The Mirror War’ Year-Long Comics Series

IDW is wrapping up their two-year-long Star Trek: Year Five series this summer, and today they just announced a brand new year-long series to follow that up, with a return to the 24th century’s Mirror Universe.

The classic Star Trek episode “Mirror, Mirror” introduced The Mirror Universe and Terran Empire, and various Trek shows revisited this dark and dangerous place in the decades since. However, we never saw Star Trek: The Next Generation’s take until IDW’s “Mirror Broken” in 2017. And beginning on “Star Trek Day” (September 8th), the Star Trek comics publisher returns with a new series where they invite readers “to witness what the galaxy could be like at the mercy of a Captain Picard whose greatness is measured in cunning and cruelty.”

The series will kick off a month early in August with a special Star Trek: The Mirror War #0 issue illustrated by Carlos Nieto.

Star Trek: Enterprise has become an influential Star Trek series that now serves as the canonical springboard for all of Star Trek that follows. A prequel set in the 22nd century, Enterprise was the fifth Star Trek show and the last of the era that launched with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. While Enterprise was the only show of the TNG era to last 4 seasons and its cancelation in 2005 marked the end of Star Trek on TV for 12 years, the series has since earned new admirers in the last two decades and the Star Trek franchise has recontextualized Enterprise's greater importance.

The Surprising Way Kate Mulgrew's Janeway Will Return In Star Trek: Prodigy

In celebration of First Contact Day 2001, a panel was held for Star Trek: Prodigy (and other franchise entries), and it was there that fans learned the upcoming animated series takes place in the Delta quadrant in 2383 and will feature Captain Janeway not in her character's human form, but rather as an emergency training hologram aboard the starship. This means that, at least for now, Kate Mulgrew's return is technically to voice an AI based on Captain Janeway, and not the actual Captain. A pretty tricky move made by co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman, no?

Paramount+ Already Discussing Multiple Shows For Next Phase Of Star Trek Universe

With Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Paramount+ already has five shows currently in production. As reported earlier today, Paramount+ is planning on debuting the first season of Prodigy this year, along with season two of Lower Decks, and season four of Discovery. Presumably, season two of Picard and the first season of Strange New Worlds will arrive in 2022. According to Variety, Paramount+ is planning on having new Star Trek content debut every quarter.

And Paramount+ already looking beyond those shows. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, EVP Julie McNamara said:

“We are in discussions about the next phase of the Trek universe beyond those five shows that Alex has built. We are invested in growing the universe of Star Trek. That said, it’s important to make sure that we are curating these properly. We’re always incubating a number of things together and then working out what the right cadence is and what the right next show is. Those are active and constant conversations. There are multiple things in the hopper right now that represent that next phase but we don’t want to expand it too much, too fast to where anyone is ever saying, “It’s just another Trek show.” We don’t want that.”

Strange New Worlds Filming To Start In Toronto

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is close to beginning production as series star Ethan Peck arrives in Toronto to reprise his role as Lieutenant Spock. Strange New Worlds is a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. Set about a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Strange New Worlds chronicles the adventures of the USS Enterprise when it was commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), alongside his trusted first officer Number One (Rebecca Romijn).

There are currently five Star Trek series in production, four for Paramount+ (the animated Star Trek: Prodigy will debut on Nickelodeon). Production on Star Trek: Discovery's fourth season is already underway, as is production on the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks. Things have been a little more complicated for Star Trek: Picard, which is shot in Los Angeles, a city currently being ravaged by the pandemic, but series star Jeri Ryan confirms production will begin on that show's second season very soon.

Christopher Plummer, General Chang in ST 6: The Undiscovered Country, Passes at 91

Oscar-winning actor Christopher Plummer, the legendary actor best known for The Sound of Music, has died. He was 91.

"Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words," Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager of 46 years said in a statement to Variety. "He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us."

Pike And Spock From ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Join Paramount+ Promos

Earlier in the week, ViacomCBS announced the subscription streaming service CBS All Access will transform into Paramount+ on March 4. Now, they have launched a new promotional campaign leading up to the relaunch. New TV commercials that started running on Sunday night star characters from across the ViacomCBS family, including two from the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

On Sunday Paramount+ rolled out two new 30-second commercials, each featuring characters from shows in the ViacomCBS family. Both spots highlight the “mountain of entertainment” theme by featuring the characters climbing a literal mountain, including Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Spock (Ethan Peck) from the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which should be going into production early this year. Star Trek: Picard star Sir Patrick Stewart also provides the narration.

Love, Antosha (Anton Yelchin Documentary)

Just came home from watching "Love, Antosha" at Tempo Film Festival in Stockholm.

It was way less sad than I'd expected, and had a lot of interviews. Of the Star Trek cast, Chris Pine was most heavily featured, and got pretty emotional. Overall, I found it informative and captivating; and not too long. Emotionally, it feels like a great closer to "the grand summer of 2009" that I've dubbed the start of the reboot-era.

Star Trek 4 is On Again With a New Director

Noah Hawley, who is best known for TV's Fargo and Legion, will direct the next Trek film for the studio, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

It is expected that Chris Pine will reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk alongside such castmates as Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana, who have been with the film series since J.J. Abrams revamped the franchise in 2009. This fourth Star Trek stands separate from one that Quentin Tarantino has been attached to for two years.

Paramount had been developing a fourth installment after 2016’s Star Trek Beyond and had hoped to be in production earlier this year. But after developing a time travel-themed script that would reunite Pine's Kirk with his father (Chris Hemsworth), negotiations with the two actors fell apart in summer 2018. The studio was trying to keep costs contained but the initial deals for the actors playing the Enterprise crew had run out and new, more expensive, deals were on the table. Talks never resumed and the project was shelved.

S.J. Clarkson was attached to helm Star Trek 4 at the time and would have become the first woman in the franchise's history to direct a Trek film.

Aron Eisenberg Passes Away at 50

The news comes from his widow, who shared the information on Facebook on Saturday night. The actor, aged 50, worked in Hollywood during the ‘80s and ‘90s, though he was best known for the role of Nog in Deep Space Nine. Over seven seasons, viewers got to know Nog, the first Ferengi to join Starfleet, where he eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Nog was a fantastic character, and Eisenberg imbued him with a distinct and powerful sense of life.

Cause of death is unknown at this time.

More Discovery Short Treks

A trailer has been released for a new series of Star Trek: Short Treks. The anthology series consists of episodes between 15 and 18 minutes long based in the universe of Star Trek: Discovery, their events further developing the focal characters and expanding upon the themes introduced in the show.

The first run of four episodes began in October last year, with new episodes streaming monthly on CBS All Access up to the premiere of season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.

Also to be featured in the new run of stories are a pair animated episodes, any details of which were not forthcoming, and a teaser for the upcoming Picard series that shows how events led up to it.

“Star Trek: Picard” is bringing back some familiar faces.

During the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, it was revealed that Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan would reprising their roles from “Next Generation” and “Voyager” in Ryan’s case. Jonathan Del Arco will also appear, likely reprising his role as the Borg Hugh from “Next Generation.”

Previously announced cast members include Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway.

Chabon has been a part of the show’s creative team since it was announced last year. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of novels such “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,” and “Moonglow.” He also wrote the “Star Trek: Short Treks” episode “Calypso.”

“Picard” is to debut later this year & will air exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and will be distributed concurrently internationally by CBS Studios International on Amazon Prime Video and in Canada on Bell Media’s cable networks, Space and Z, and OTT service Crave.

CBS All Access released the trailer for its upcoming streaming series "Star Trek: Picard" on Thursday, 25 years after the final episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
