3/24: Intro - Grace Under Pressure (LIVE)
Flick on your lighter and let the show begin.
Last night was the start of Purim, my favorite holiday. It’s an excuse to dress up, get drunk, and boo your enemies. (Honestly, that’s a good course of action for any random Saturday night, but it feels especially cathartic when there’s a rabbi involved.)
Purim is supposed to be topsy-turvy, where the poor are rich, the jokes are terrible, and everyone wears a mask to reveal their true selves. In honor of this wacky day, I decided to roll with another concert interstitial, the one from the Grace Under Pressure tour from 1984.
This interstitial has the usual hallmarks of a Rush concert intro: the carnival barker theme, the cartoon sounds, and of course, the “hello, hello, hello". But what I didn’t realize, not until I looked up a concert video on YouTube, is that unlike in the later years, this song wasn’t played over any kind of video. There was some stage lighting work, but mostly it was just this song and a dark stage—until the first strains of “The Spirit of Radio” would open the show.
So when you’re listening to this opener, you’re almost capturing the same experience the people in the concert venues would have experienced, too. Just turn down the lights, flick on your lighter, and get ready for the show.

I'm surprised there wasn't a Loony Tunes cartoon playing behind it! I saw them on this tour but I don't recall this opening. Happy Purim!
