Today marks the 25th anniversary of my bar mitzvah.

I suppose this calls for some sort of interspection, but the first thing that came to mind what I asked myself about the meaning of this is:
Why aren't bar mitzvah anniversaries celebrated, or even noted? We make this huge frickin' deal about the ceremony, it happens and then that's it.

The only other Jewish ceremony that gets this kind of hype a wedding, and anniversaries are considered very important. Funerals are recognized with yartzhiets and births with birthdays. But Bar Mitzvahs? Nothing!

Well, unless you live to 83, in which case you get another Bar Mitzvah, but don't expect as many presents.

So for 25 years, I've been a man. I think that means I finally got my acne under control, I have to shave way more often than I do, I'm not afraid to talk to girls and for the most part, I can take care of myself without my parents help.

I still kinda feel like a teenager, only I get more dates now. Probably because around the time of my bar mitzvah, I also discovered regular bathing, deodorant and conditioner. I've always been a slow learner.

I was reading this article about gay marraige rights:
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20081209/NEWS/81209018/-1/ENT06
(thanks for the link joedecker )

And it opens a question that I've wondered since before Prop 8 started rolling around. It's the idea of escalation. The current perception is that marraige is between two consenting adults with the debate is that it can or cannot be a same-sex couple.

The argument for same sex marraige is that it is an equal rights issue. I'm fine with this. Gays are being treated as second class because they are being denied a right that straight people have. Fine.

But what about the poly community? Are they second class because marraige is defined as TWO people?

and then (because we are playing devil's advocate) how far does this go? Are we being ageist? Speciesist? Antinepotistic? because we don't want people marrying their underage monkey uncle?

I just wonder - and moreso as I approach my own marraige - what is the purpose of marraige as a legal institution at all - and from that answer - why couldn't any two or more things marry each other?
Ever since the Castro Halloween party closed, I've struggled for what to do on a holiday where Fun is turned into a religious experience. Fate helped me decide as tonight Brass Farthing will perform at

The plan was brilliant - take the train to Sunnyvale, party all night, come home in the morning.

Alas - I forgot that I have my nephew's Bar Mitzvah tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM.....

IN FRICKIN' LOS ANGELES!

So now the plan is drive to Sunnyvale. Sing from 8-10pm. Drive 6 hours to Frickin' LA. Pass out for 3-4 hours. Endure a day of Bar Mitzvah festivities. Drive home Sunday. OY VEY! What kid gets bar mitvah'd on All Saints Day!
