Similarities between Code Geass and real life events
Background: In '02 I was a volunteer in the territory of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation or EZLN for a month. Recently completing Code Geass, I couldn't help but notice the many similarities between Lelouch/Zero and the Zapatista military leader, Subcommandante Marcos. I'll outline them here. Be warned, this contains massive spoilers.
-Lelouch is a Brittanian student, exiled to the third world of Area 11. If the Mexican government's story is to be believed, Marcos is Rafael Sebastian Guillermo, a university proffesor who fled relatively prosperous Mexico City to third world Chiapas.
-Both are white outsiders that are heroes and the hope of rebellion to a conquered people who are treated as second class citizens.
-Both are reborn as rebel military leaders who never show their faces, fighting against racism and poverty
-Zero states that only those who are prepared to be shot should shoot. Marcos calls the Zapatistas 'soldiers who wish to no longer be soldiers'. A Zapatista communique could sound comfortable coming out of Zero and vice versa
-Marcos has recently taken to calling himself "Delegate Zero" on his Other Campaign tour.
