I'm still trying to get over the loss of my external HD. Lost data includes movies, pictures, music, and other media. I can reaquire all that, but I've been most distraught over the loss of <a href="http://ns33.cyanidehosting.com/tumbleweed/>tumbleweed, and I wouldn't be as upset as I was if I hadn't planned on backing up everything only a few days before the drive died. Sigh... I can always recode tumbleweed and make it better, but it had lasted for more than three and a half years before this total and catastrophic failure. Farewell forever.

On a happier note, I got the best birthday present I could ever ask for. Ever. More details to come in the following months. :)

Of course, Kennedy doesn't get off easy at the end, either, just short of bringing out the wrath of God from the 75-year-old chairperson. You wonder what's going on in the head of Alito while they're discussing this.

Oddly enough, it seems that the three-or-so entries I made within the past two months have mysteriously disappeared. Fortunately, they only conveyed my dissatisfaction towards my position in the family social hierarchy and horror of God's hellhole that is Geary Hall.

My words of wisdom this holiday season: Don't spend 20 of 30 hours watching Family Guy; you start speaking like Stewie. Don't spend 35 of 48 hours playing Halo; you start walking around dual-wielding a pencil and a pen.

Happy holidays to you bastards who never leave comments.

So I've been at Penn State for quite a while now. I spent 6 days backpacking in the mountains with 8 other incoming freshman and had a blast. We hiked, ate, hiked some more, ate again, and slept. Repeat 4x. There were bee stings and chunky water, but the food was great. I'll have to post up pictures of the trip later. ^_^

So I'm moved in with the floor RA, stuck in supplemental housing until more spaces open up. I'll have to put up a pic of my dorm, too.

So now that each three paragraphs begin the same way, I'm going to go get some food and stuff.

Terror levels

Be aware that the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from RUN to HIDE. The only two higher levels in France are Surrender and Collaborate. The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing their military capability. It's not only the French that are on a heightened level of alert. The Italians have increased their alert level from "shout loudly and excitedly" to "elaborate military posturing". Two more levels remain, "ineffective combat operations" and "change sides". The Germans also increased their alert state from "disdainful arrogance" to "dress in uniform and sing marching songs". They have two higher levels, "invade a neighbour" and "lose". Seeing this reaction in continental Europe the Americans have gone from "isolationism" to "find somewhere else in the middle east ripe for regime change". Their remaining higher alert states are "take on the world" and "ask the British for help". Finally here in GB we've gone from "pretend nothing's happening" to "make another cup of tea". Our higher levels are "remain resolutely cheerful" and "win".

I wonder where the status indicator for "buying beef" stands.

Went to PSU to get fall courses signed up. For course advising, it was 3 people meeting with our advisor. The two other people in my group all had last names that alphabetized prior to mine, so she told the girl that she got credit for AP Lit and she could take the placement test for Calc 2. She told the guy he could take Spanish 3 because he got 4 years of Spanish in HS, and that he could take the Calc placement test. And she turns to me.

Apparently, I got credit for macro-econ, environmental resource management (APES), political and science (gov't). By now, the other two people are staring like I got a second head or something. And the advisor continues: apparently, I didn't do as poorly as I thought I did on Calc BC, considering we never covered Taylor or MacLaurin series or polar integrals, got a 3 and got credit for Calc 2. I also got credit for Intro to Stat, but not Stat 200, which means I didn't do as well as I though I would've done. But that's 16 credits from 5 out of a total of 10 AP classes I took in HS, plus 2 for ORION hiking experience for a total of 18, which gives me a lot of scheduling flexibility. Speaking of which...

I signed up for Criminal Law and Justice, Critical Thinking, Elementary Astronomy + lab, Statistics for Business and a seminar session for ORION. That's 16 credits, and if I get into Philosophy of Law and Ethics, that gives me a total of 37 credits by the end of 1st semester.

AP exams over, yAy! 7 tests in 8 days, I'm tired.
We got the ROV fixed and ready to drop in the water and we were scheduled to start at 4, but Brian didn't get home until 5, and by then, it was already lightning and thunder outside. Sigh...

Through fog, rain, and hail, Langley Math Team made a significant show at John Hopkin's Math Team tourny yesterday. In a grueling, 6-hour competition between 10 schools (9 of which were from Maryland *cough*), Langley's shame now officially knows no boundaries. Earning a total of 21 out of 100 points, me! I do ponder to myself why I chose Penn State over UMD... :o

Catch-22 due on Fri. I don't get the gist of having such a major research/literary analysis paper due right before AP exams. Maybe it's supposed to help us on the exam itself, maybe it'll give Marshall some extra time to grade. But for Christ's sake, now is possibly the worst time to have anything major due. I could care less if we had a dozen papers due after exams, but there's definately going to be a lot of crying and shouting in many students' households in the next few weeks.

Today was the last day of spring break. And there's still so much to do. I need to stop procrastinating or at least work more efficiently. It may be that there's just too big a workload to manage, and I go floppy on time-management. E.g., I spent 6 hours playing Halo 2 the other day and spent 4 hours doing Calc this morning, and I've got Heart of Darkness and Catch-22 to read (*cough*summarize). Although I must admit, Lit does have a hefty workload, heavier than even a couple of my other classes combined. Like that's old news...

Rejected to VA Tech, placed on unofficial wait list to William and Mary, and deferred from UMI. Case Western and UPenn are good schools, but they're all much more expensive than in-state. The only savior now is UVA. If I had to choose, I'd prefer UPenn or Case over JMU, but depending on costs, I'll have to see.

My fish better not have died over break. ¬_¬

integral arcsin(x) = x * arcsin(x) + sqrt(1 - x^2)
