This story starts with an evacuation

Yevdokiia is 89 years old. All her life, she lived in a small border village in the Chernihiv region. It's a place where, in recent months, every day has unfolded to the sound of explosions.

One day, a direct strike hit her home. The blast destroyed everything.
Neighbors pulled Yevdokiia from under the rubble. She was injured, but alive. She suffered shrapnel wounds to her leg and a fractured thigh bone. Without waiting for help, they placed her on a wheelbarrow and carried her out of danger under active shelling.

Doctors performed surgery, removed the fragments, and stabilized her condition.
After that, Nova Ukraine partner Barrier-Free Foundation evacuated Yevdokiia to the Chernivtsi region. Today, she is safe, beside her granddaughter, surrounded by warmth, calm, and care.

On January 13, the C Ukraine Cultural Showcase opened its doors in downtown San Francisco, creating space to experience Ukrainian culture up close!

Nova Ukraine enthusiastically supported this launch organized by the Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco, with our Chairman Nick Bilogorskiy joining the opening and taking in those first moments with the community.

“At a time when Ukraine’s culture and identity are under attack, C UKRAINE popup shows the resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian people. We were glad to be part of the community and share what makes Ukraine special.”

We also got the chance to connect with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, who visited to see the space for himself and connect with the people behind it.

The night brought together artists, families, volunteers, and friends who were excited to share experiences and stay connected to Ukrainian culture here in the Bay Area.

We look forward to seeing what grows here in the months ahead! If you are in San Francisco, take a moment to visit and support the work happening inside.

Nova Ukraine proudly celebrates Wisconsin as the first US state to take a stand and condemn Russia’s abduction of Ukrainian children.

On January 13, the Wisconsin State Assembly unanimously passed Joint Resolution 103, following unanimous approval in the State Senate last November. With this vote, Wisconsin became the first US state to adopt such a resolution through its full legislature.

Nova Ukraine, together with Wisconsin Ukrainians Inc. and Friends of Ukraine - Madison, joined forces with lawmakers from both parties to bring this urgent issue to the forefront and secure its formal recognition in Wisconsin.

Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion, more than 19,546 Ukrainian children have been abducted and forcibly transferred to Russia or Russian-occupied territories, according to the Ukrainian government and international monitoring organizations.

This resolution sets an important precedent and sends a clear message that these crimes cannot be ignored. Nova Ukraine welcomes Wisconsin’s leadership and will continue advocating for accountability and for every abducted child to be returned home.

Blackouts across Ukraine continue to disrupt daily routines as russian attacks damage critical energy infrastructure and trigger widespread power outages. Power outages at home can limit the time and space students need for studies.

All 55 Змістовно after-school learning centers help make learning possible even during outages, with support from Nova Ukraine and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Rechargeable lamps light every table, charging stations keep devices ready, and autonomous heating keeps rooms warm, and students keep moving forward. They catch up with schoolwork, build skills in areas like IT and languages, and reconnect with peers to rebuild the everyday interactions many have missed.

What happens in these centers every day helps students grow and shows that education and community continue to expand across Ukraine!
