(will expand and maybe add pictures when somewhat more conscious, just copy-pasting long description for now.)

(District 1)

The building itself is mostly offices, with a couple cafes and an electronics store at the bottom. Rinzler's base of operations, however, is entirely roof-based. He's taken up residence in a small maintenance space—the elevator control room, to be specific. This is where he takes (occasional) rest cycles, and stores his energy vials or anything else he picks up while exploring. The room itself is small, a concrete structure with two entrances: a hatch (usually secured) that grants access to the shaft itself, and a metal door to the roof outside.

While he doesn't sleep there, the roof itself is also part of Rinzler's domain, and actually the reason he chose this location. The building's taller than most of the surrounding ones—and has a clear line of sight to the front of the hospital. Yep. Rinzler's doing his very best to creep on everyone. Fortunately for the rest of the world, he's out and exploring frequently enough that his odds of catching new arrivals are variable at best. A few noise-traps near the easiest approaches are in place to round out his paranoia, and he's broken the rooftop hatch into the building in a locked position; it won't open without considerable force. Worth noting that no approach is exactly "easy", and it's high enough that it's difficult to get a glance on top without actually going there.

Character Survey of Doooooooom (in progress)
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Tall, but thin. 6'2" for height; weight not known in canon. "Lightly built" might be more accurate than thin; he's not scrawny by any means, but let's just say wrestling is demonstrably one of his less effective combat maneuvers.

2. How old is he?
I ran the conversions. Including things like days, estimations as here. Estimated creation date was July 9, 1982, "present" date December 17, 2011. 45:1 conversion rate between worlds.
....Which all sums up to 1354 cycles, or 1237 years experienced. (Only 28 years passed in the user world).

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
So. Much. Slouching. Hunching is more accurate, and Rinzler loses a good half-foot of height from it compared to when he stands up straight. As Tron, he stood tall, and relatively easily; as Rinzler it's the opposite. Drawn in, body almost always clenched, waiting for orders or combat. Default stance is hunched, head lowered, hands half open at his sides.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Health is less applicable for a program. But he's completely functional in a physical sense, barring whatever injuries he may have acquired in any given game or fight. Very, very fit as compared to human standards.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Depends somewhat on the setting. Default motions are fluid, quick, but at times, especially in Clu's presence, he'll cling to that full-body tension even while moving, resulting in almost mechanical motions, usually on command. Barring that, he moves easily and suddenly, often with acrobatics or quick tricks thrown in. Rinzler prefers to be in motion, and is somewhat of a show-off as to what he can do.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Eye of the beholder and all. Under the mask, he looks like his user, Alan Bradley. That said, barring circumstances (*cough*, Abax), Rinzler will always keep his mask on. He doesn't actually remember what he looks like; as far as he's concerned, he has no face, and he's not supposed to have a face, and the black helmet is all there is.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Light skin, paler than human norm and lacking human irregularities. No physical scars; he's been thoroughly repaired from past injuries suffered.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Brown, relatively short. As for texture, it turns into voxels if the render's damaged—just like everything else. Barring that... straight, not visibly coarse?

9. What color are his eyes?
Blue-grey. Pupils are hexagonal, can be backlit with the color of his circuitry if undergoing a heavy processing load or performing certain scans.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Circuitry: Rinzler is covered in streaks, dots, and lines of light across the exterior of his gridsuit. These glow red-orange to indicate his loyalty to Clu, full or partial reversion to Tron can switch the color to blue-white. Beneath the gridsuit, the pattern is much more complex, and fluctuates much more readily, resembling (though not completely identical to) his old Encom design. With or without his shell, the most distinctive mark is the tetra-amino on his chest marking out a T for Tron.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
...I'm tempted to say full body; Rinzler does rigid/coiled really well. That said, probably shoulders and spine, with hands coming up next most.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Ha. On the Grid, he wears one thing, and only one thing. Ever. His armor/gridsuit: black, barring the circuitry dots, more or less one unit piece. It's actually a part of his codebase, not an externalized attachment; he can rezz or derezz it at will, though he rarely has reason to. It comes with a black, opaque helmet which as Rinzler, he will never choose to remove—between the helmet and gridsuit, he's completely covered, nothing showing.
Off-Grid, he pretty much wears the same thing... except when circumstances (Abax) force him to do otherwise. Rinzler's user clothes consist of a relatively close parallel, albeit clothes instead of coded suit. Black, long sleeves and pants. No helmet, and no gloves, but otherwise covering everything. Though there's no built in disk dock, his disk can attach and sync in his back like it normally would; a visible connection of orange light will hold it in place.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Gridsuit: yes. It's skintight, flexible, literally part of his design.
User clothes: less so. They fit okay, but he's not used to wearing loose things with fiddly bits. And he is so very awkward about having a face.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
He is his job. Which is to say, no.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
...probably commando. Gridsuit is, y'know. Covering everything. <s>And programs sex with their circuits anyways, but shhh</s>.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
...If you ever get Rinzler to talk, it will sound... somewhat like someone who hasn't spoken in a thousand years. Electronic flange, rough. More deep than high pitched.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Normally? He doesn't. Rinzler emits a constant ticking rumble as Clu's programming conflicts with his base code; this is his only vocalization. It can vary to some degree with mood or expression, but larger changes indicate code conflicts or internal struggle. Rinzler speaking is a rare event indeed; he's (re)made to be voiceless.
In the event that he broke through Clu's coding enough to speak for himself, it would take effort, and there would be hesitation.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
The same electronic flange to the voice held by all Basics. As Tron, his speech was relatively straightforward and devoid of tics.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
<s>Binary</s>. It comes off as English on screen, and is understandable by users. That and machine code are probably what he knows best, though picking up new languages would likely come extremely easily; he'd see it as simple code. Unless we're talking what Rinzler speaks, in which case it's rumble/rattle/ticking/purr/growl/whir.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Not really.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
...neither. Tron is direct and blunt and has no brain to mouth filter. He's not actively insulting, but he can come off that way. Rinzler has all the filters, and thinking isn't relevant.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Covered this pretty well in the previous stuff. Utterly inarticulate to the point of not being able to talk. Likely to change if he breaks through Clu's reprogramming (fully or partially), or is recoded.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Intelligent. Though he rarely shows it openly, Rinzler is always watching, always taking in data, and always analyzing for strategies or weaknesses. Neither book smart nor street smart is entirely accurate, given he's a programmed intelligence, but the latter's closer to it, he learns and plans so he can act, not for knowledge's own sake.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
On his feet, on his hands, on whatever limb he's flipping off at the time... very quick and short-term adaptable. Tactics over strategy.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Take in data, analyze for weakness or relevancy, store or discard or note or respond. More logical by far, though he's not above emotions, and capable of quick assessments approaching intuition—he's not going to second-guess a flash of inspiration mid-fight; he's going to act on it.
That said, Rinzler utterly lacks much imagination or creativity; while he can project out ideas and tactics based on his capabilities (which are extensive), he's never going to deviate too much from simple practicality. He can't, and doesn't try to, plan ahead for everything. And idealism doesn't factor into anything. He'd need something to believe in.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
LOL, program? It's a bit less straightforward than that actually; while most of his base skills and combat routines are programmed in, Tron was coded to be adaptable, and despite the restrictions placed on him, he has learned and continues to learn. No education as such; he learns and grows as he experiences, and for all that much of that capability has been locked away or deleted, Rinzler's got over a thousand years of experience to draw from. Most of his learned ability relates to combat or tactics; anything nonessential to his function tends to get discarded or wiped, though as in-game situations force him past his usual parameters, he tends to observe and retain more.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Combat. He's spent his entire existence fighting, killing, and, at least for the last thousand, being upgraded, edited, and cut down specifically to increase that function at the cost of everything else. Tracking's also primary, tactics are a peripheral inclusion, and he's capable of any number of skills that would increase his ability to hunt targets and follow Clu's commands.
What he's interested in learning more about... is complicated. Rinzler as a baseline is solely focused on his function; anything relevant to new combat abilities or tactics would be a focus; anything that isn't would be discarded as not relevant. That said, he used to be more than that, used to care about more than that, and given time, it can leak through. Once he opens up a bit, Rinzler can be curious about everything, and while he might excuse it as acquiring data for potential future use, that's not quite true. Some things are half familiar, and others seem like they should be, and he badly wants to find something important, even as he rejects everything.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Just. Laughing. i>Forever</i>. At this question.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He wouldn't admit it, but mood swings. He's supposed to be blank, default, uncaring, acting rather than thinking or evaluating on his own. He isn't. Rinzler's primary emotional response at any given time is anger; he's inherently hostile towards the world, and at himself both for being what he was programmed to be and failing to be just that. Any number of issues or people can trigger responses from desperate interest to violence. 'Cheerful' would just... never apply, and he alternates between apathy and intent focus. 'Volatile' would be the most applicable descriptor.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Suspicion with an edge of hostility. Inherently expects the worst of everyone and everything, and poised to identify and respond to the threat.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React. Doing things—any things—of his own initiative doesn't come easily for Rinzler. While he will land himself in a lot of messes in a nonstandard environment, that's more due to his default response to any perceived threat being "kill it"; it's still automatic reaction, not choice and intent.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Another laughter-inducing question. Let's just put it this way. In panfandom games, he's come up against heroes and villains, mages and giant robots, psychopomps and gods. Most of these in direct personal combat. And Rinzler? Still hasn't learned how to back down or run away.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
What is humor. No. Really. What is it?

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
...mental disorders? All of them. Diagnosable? ...
He's been reprogrammed. Thoroughly. With checkups and edits and regular efforts to delete every scrap of his former personality... or much of any personality. But canonly? There are still fragments of Tron poking through the rewrite.
In the state I pulled him from, Rinzler's got severe amnesia: his memories of being Tron are completely blocked and filtered away from access in a way that makes them both extremely painful and extremely difficult to even try and reach. Other memories and experiences are likewise restricted, and any number of triggering events will induce anything from more memory deletion to short-term lockup or loss of physical autonomy. He's coded for unconditional loyalty to Clu—there is very little his admin could command that would even get a moment of hesitation from the program.
That said... even before any game events push him past normal function, the repurposing's already been strained. Meeting a user, seeing Flynn's hideout, triggering experiences that were already pushing him towards the breaking point he hit in the lightjet battle. He isn't that far through his own timeline; he's still serving Clu, hunting down the users, not fighting for them. But he's not quite at default settings, either. Rinzler's just barely beginning to wake up and look around for himself; his usual coping method of complete apathy is wearing thin.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
...so many.
>As Tron: the first movie.
-Getting caught by the MCP before he was even fully written, pretty much growing up (as much as programs do) as a captive forced to kill others to stay alive.
-Breakout, Ram's death, and then finding out Flynn was a user. Completely broke his (fairly naive) expectations, made him more curious and open than worshipful.
-MCP's defeat, freeing the system. Also included what he perceived as Flynn sacrificing himself for them.
>Tron part 2: Betrayal, Evolution:
-Switching over to Flynn's new system, having to adapt his function of network security to living on and protecting a half-developed closed system with only one user.
-The ISOs—the strain they put on the system, and him, but mostly Clu. How Tron got stuck between the factions. Highlight point would be Clu's poisoning the Sea; it was a conclusive break between him and Clu, and made it heartbreakingly clear how little Flynn cared to listen to either of them.
-The coup, Clu's betrayal: fighting for the users, for Flynn—and failing. Sacrificing himself just to give Flynn a chance to run—throwing away his life, he'd thought. And losing more than that.
>Rinzler. This part's relatively short because he was intentionally kept static.
-Reprogramming, creation in a sense. Lost everything he was, really did wake up a drone. Original process took awhile, there were several trials and errors before Clu was satisfied with his work.
-Cue a thousand years of... just about nothing. No growth, no development—because Clu wouldn't let there be any. Constant edits, reworking, checks for absolute obedience. In all that time he glitched somewhat, but once the original issues were fixed, the number of times he came close to any kind of breakthrough could be counted on one hand. Over a thousand-year interval.
-Legacy: Fighting Sam Flynn shocks him out of his complacency—badly shocks him, given the spoken word. Glitches smoothed out, went along with no problems. But the enemy was users, and everything was much more present than it had been for so long, and Rinzler couldn't quite stop thinking about it. His current timeline cuts before he gets past thinking.

14. What does he fear?
Biggest fear: reprogramming. Where Clu's concerned, he utterly shuts down in this regard, but on a level he can't even be aware of, he's helpless and panicky and terrified of losing himself—and he does lose himself. To Rinzler, hands on his disk mean an attempt to reshape him, delete him, twist away any fragments of awareness he's managed to cling to. And while he shuts down with Clu because he has to, with anyone else, he will panic and attempt to kill.
Other fears include failure, abandonment—though the second's less fear and more quiet expectation. He knows he doesn't have value, and he knows he'll be left behind. And if he hates it, that doesn't make a difference.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He doesn't have any. <s>lies</s>. Apathy is a pretty big part of Rinzler—he's spent a thousand years as someone's tool, closer to an object than subject. He couldn't choose, couldn't make anything happen, and wanting things hurt—both in a literal sense from Clu's commands and directives ripping into him when he tried to stray, and a more emotional one. He never got anywhere. He couldn't. And whether that's an active impossibility or simply him not trying hard enough, Rinzler doesn't know and doesn't want to know and doesn't want to think about it.
On a very big level, that's it. He doesn't hope, he doesn't look forward to anything. He just obeys. He's already the best, he's already perfect, and he doesn't expect anything to change, ever. That said... there's still a fragment. Hope in the users, a sense of absence that hurts and he wants himself back. Or possibly just wants it all to end. It's very bleak, and he rejects this so very violently—because it doesn't work, it's a lie, users leave and he's nothing but a weapon.
Hope is a very nebulous concept for Rinzler, and game interactions can push things in any number of directions. He can shut down, become more convinced he's only a tool to be used, go into active despair, especially if he recovers just enough to know how wrong he is, or in a very few cases, actually believe he could be more.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
As a baseline? Nothing. But only because he doesn't know enough about himself. If he learned it, he'd want to keep his former identity secret; there would be all the confusion and shame about what he is and was.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?

6. Does he have other close friends?

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color?
2. Smell?
3. Time of day?
4. Season?
5. Book?
6. Music?
7. Place?
8. Substance?
9. Plant?
10. Animal?

END
{{ Get the HTML here so you can do it yourself. }}

TRONVERSE: Time Conversions

Disclaimers
>This is as applies to Legacy-Grid time only. Any speculation about the Encom Grid, or theoretical present conversions, is not included.
>There are three possible rates of conversion from the grid to the user world, ranging from 1:60 to 1:45. They're all valid, and all derive from different starting points for calculation. I will use one of these, and stay consistent with it.
>Calculations below explain derivation and alternate results. The chart comes from those.
>The common units are really all you should be needing. If you want to use dekacycles or centicycles, be my guest, but metric usually cares by thousands.
>The bolded columns are estimates. They're there for general use, because it's easier to think of things without lotsa decimals. Precise values can be found in the appropriate column, and explained below in the calculations
>Precise values for user world comparisons cluttered the table and are therefore left lingering in the calculations. Have fun with them there

Conversion Table:

Time Unit (digital)

Rough User Time Equivalent

Relative Time Passing in User World

Precise User Time Equivalent

Metric Equvalencies

Common Units

Cycle

1 year

1 week

0.913242 years

1 cycle

Millicycle

8 hours

10 minutes

8 hours

0.001 cycles

Microcycle

30 seconds

half a second

28.8 seconds

1 x 10-6 cycles

Nanocycle

.03 seconds

negligible

0.0288 seconds

1 x 10-9 cycles

Uncommon Units

Decicycle

1 month

18 hours

33.3 days

0.1 cycles

Centicycle

3 days

2 hours

3.3 days

0.01 cycles

Dekacycle

1 decade

2.5 months

9.13242 years

10 cycles

Hectocycle

1 century

2 years

91.3242 years

100 cycles

Kilocycle

1 millennium

21 years

913.242 years

1000 cycles

ANALOG: DIGITAL TIME ESTIMATE: 1:45
This is crucial. Calculations can be found below to support it, but it basically means you can multiply however long passes in the user world by 45 to determine how long went on in-Grid. Or divide by 45 if you want to know how long it took your programs to run around and have adventures from the perspective of someone on the other side of the screen.

Calculations (Table)

Given:
-"...only one millicycle. About eight hours."
        => 1 mc = 8 hrs
-"How long have you been searching for this, Clu? About a thousand cycles? No?"
        => 1000 c (digital) = 21 yr (analog)

First: identify length of cycle
1 mc = 8 hrs
1 c = 1000 mc = 1000 * (8 hrs) = 8000 hr = 333.3 = 0.913242 years
=>One cycle is as long as 0.913242 years, given the same time rate.

Next: identify time conversion ratio (digital/analog)
1000 c (digital) = 21 yr (analog)
1 yr (a) = 1000/21 c (d) = (1000/21*0.913242) yr (d) = 43.487714 yr (d) per yr (a)
=> 43.487714 times as long passes in the digital world as in the analog for any given interval.
NOTE: while all calculations used for this table are done with the precise value, the approximation is listed as 45:1. This is because it is MUCH EASIER to calculate things on the fly with that ratio, and given how much imprecision is in our given values, rounding somewhat is hardly the worst we can do.

Next: calculate other metric values; convert as appropriate to user time.
microcycles: 1 μc = 1/1000 mc = 0.008 hrs = 0.48 minutes = 28.8 seconds
nanocycles: 1 nc = 1/1000 μc = .0288 seconds = 28.8 ms
decicycles: 1 dc = 100 mc = 800 hrs = 33.3 days
centicycles: 1 cc = 10 mc = 80 hrs = 3.3 days
dekacycles: 1 Dc = 10 c = 9.13242 years
hectocycles: 1 hc = 100 c = 91.3242 years
kilocycles: 1 kc = 1000 c = 913.242 years

Next: calculate how long passes in the analog world for each unit in digital time:
(NOTE: Calculations are all "divide by 43.487714". So only a few are shown.)
cycle: 1 c = 0.913242 yr
(0.913242 yr)/43.487714 = 0.021 yr = 7.665 days = approximately 1 week
millicycle: 1 mc = 8 hrs
(8 hrs)/43.487714 = 0.18396 hrs = 11 minutes = approximately 10 minutes
decicycle: 1 dc = 33.3 days
(33.3 days)/43.487714 = 0.7665 days = 18.396 hrs

...figured this could come in handy. Mainly aimed at Abax, though a lot of the stuff applies to Grid-Lined as well.

What You Can Do to Rinzler

Hugging, Touching, Romance, Closeness
Rinzler's not interested. He doesn't have any memory of physical touch apart from violence in combat and Clu. Attempts to touch him will generally be met with physical rebuffal, aggression, and potentially violence. There are and can be exceptions, but he tends to consider people being near a threat. And being grabbed or restrained is a quite active panic button for him that reminds him (subconsciously) of his rectification; any attempt at a hold will get a response ranging from fleeing to attempted murder. As for romance, Yori was the only person he was close to in that way. And we don't talk about what happened to her.

Out of character? Approach him, prod him, do whatever. But outcomes can range from hilarious to less-than-amusing, and be warned that your character's unlikely to get the result they were looking for.

Combat, Injury, Derezz
Please fight him. Please attack him. He really, really wants you to.

For Rinzler, violence in combat is his ideal state. It's mostly free of the conflicts that he struggles with just about all of his existence, consists solely of movement and action and skill. It's what he's best at, and he doesn't have to think or question or doubt himself. Feel free, at any time, to pick a fight with Rinzler. Because he will be trying to pick a fight with you. (You including half the city, if his track record is anything to go by).

As far as injury and derezz (death) are concerned, I'm okay with either. That said, keep in mind that Rinzler is insanely good at what he does. See the "what he can do to you" for more on this, but he won't be an easy target. However, he's still only somewhat familiar with tricks such as magic and mutant powers—and while some will be ineffective, he can and has been disabled in one hit by certain attacks. Contact me if you want to kill him off, but if things work out that way in a fight, I'm unlikely to say no, especially with advance planning.

Reprogramming
Rinzler is literally a computer program. A firewall, to be specific. He's made of code and data (and will shatter into such if injured). And as a computer program, he can be (and has been) rewritten.

Any rewrite makes use of his disks, and requires access to them—both disks, in their melded form, if you want to get any code that makes sense from it. He is not capable of rewriting himself—with the restrictions he's currently under, he's not even able to access his code or memory files in read-only form, though he can do that much with other programs' disks. His code's also locked to Clu, his admin; any rewrite attempts will require skill and effort—or significant familiarity with Clu's coding—to get in at all. Failed attempts can have negative effects.

Once in, it might take a bit of observation or experiments for a programmer to understand how to affect him. But when it comes down to it? He is utterly malleable. More so than most programs; while the majority have at least minor control over how their disk syncs, Rinzler's been methodically and thoroughly stripped of that; any edits will take immediate and total effect. Rinzler can be recoded to limit or change his abilities, remove memory of an event, force unconditional loyalty and obedience, or more. Given he's currently under a good bit of that kind of filters and loyalty coding, a rewrite could also be used to remove what Clu's done. Additionally, recoding is the primary in-canon means of fixing his injuries, though certain forms of extra-canon healing (Kingdom Hearts) have been demonstrated to work.

It's worth noting that if a reprogrammer wants to keep him useful, there's only so much they can do. Old memory files and directives become tied inextricably to more function-based code; while recent events can be deleted entirely (and some of his current code will automatically try to do that), any attempt to utterly and completely purge him of previous identity would leave little more than a shell. This is why his current coding consists more of filters and overrides than anything else—for him to be effective as Rinzler, Tron's code couldn't be completely removed.

What I am okay with: anything. No, really. It comes with the caveat of talk-to-me-first, but that is not, and in no way should be taken as, a refusal. If a character can get ahold of his disks (for which I redirect you to the violence sections), and is skilled enough to access and manipulate his code? Then they can remake him however they choose. Trying to help him by removing Clu's code, recoding him to be their assassin/enforcer/pet, or just imposing a restraining order in his brain to stop him going after someone... I'm good with any of it. IC actions determine IC consequences, and this is without question his biggest weakness.

What Rinzler Can Do to You

Combat:
For the most part, I'll be looking up other people's permissions posts, so this is more a general description than anything else. Rinzler's violent, aggressive, and very, very skilled in combat. Literally the most talented fighter in his world—and we're talking about a world full of semi-immortal people who can exceed human limits on strength and speed. He's been fighting nearly nonstop for over a thousand years, and while his existence as Tron was focused on protecting and reacting to threats, as Rinzler he's specialized in hunting down and killing people. Killing lots of people; Resistance members tended to face him in groups rather than alone. And it didn't make a difference.

If he's fighting your character, there are very few instances when he won't be trying to kill or seriously injure you. This does not mean he's going to succeed, and he's both lost and drawn fights in his previous game. But if you're tagging him in a combat situation, please do so with the awareness that he won't be friendly or particularly held-back about it. Injury is likely. Death is possible, though player contact should really be occurring before it gets that far. I'm not trying to scare people away, and I very much love combat threads. But Rinzler doesn't play well with others.

Hacking:
Relevant! At the moment, specifically relevant to Abax, though any game he gets in with a communicator or the like will have (and has had) this as an issue. So ABAX PEOPLE, READ THIS.

Rinzler's original coding is as a security program, and as above, he excels at his job. As far as communication devices are concerned, this ranges from setting up his own security measures to breaking those of others. Encryptions come naturally to him, and while the hardware might take a bit of a learning curve, Rinzler's adaptive and intelligent—and this stuff, far more than anything else he's learned in the user world(s), is instinctive.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR CHARACTER: Rinzler will be hacking all the stuff. And good at it. He doesn't have much in the way of a sense of privacy, and a previous creeper-and-otherwise war with Soundwave in his last game taught him the value of information. That said, he also doesn't have much of a sense of humor, and he lacks a degree of subtlety that would incline him towards misinformation—so he probably won't be screwing with anyone's settings, or deleting their messages or the like. Will contact players for exceptions, of course. But in general, he'd like to be creeping all over your filtered and encrypted messages. And as far as skill's concerned, he would be capable in most cases.

PLEASE COMMENT with how okay you are on this. Generally, I'd contact players before assuming he's prying into their things, but given he'd theoretically like to be keeping a watch on the whole network, if any of you could tell me in advance what of your characters' stuff you're comfortable with him getting into, I would very much appreciate it. He's by no means infallible, but he's very good, and motivated to learn as much as he can about the various targets/threats/others around him.

This has been a massive source of character development for him. When he first entered, his focus was straightforward: carry out his orders from Clu and kill anyone who got in the way. By now, while he hasn't really broken the reprogramming that limits him, Rinzler's fought for and against users (humans), recovered some degree of memory, and is actually beginning to wrestle with choice rather than just obeying his directives.

Network posts made and tagged by Rinzler.
Logs made and tagged by Rinzler.

Previous CR (for characters similarly transferring to Abax):

Kurosaki_Ichigo started off Rinzler's stay in Promenade with utterly inexplicable and untrustworthy behavior—trying to help the program for no other reason than he was lost and struggling in a new place. Though their interactions have gone through several stages of aggression and uncertainty, Ichigo's continued effort has resulted in a reciprocated friendship, inasmuch as Rinzler's capable of such a thing. More than support, Ichigo constantly provides Rinzler with challenges—to move past the rote aggression his recoding prompts, to think and choose for himself. These aren't concepts Rinzler can easily accept, but Ichigo's efforts—and friendship—has made an undeniable difference.

Shirosaki Hichigo was, and largely still is, a confusing threat in Rinzler's estimation. Their first encounter resulted in the program concluding "virus" and having to be physically blocked from attacking. Their next interaction resulted in Rinzler reclassifying the other as a security function (made "to protect"). Though they've fought as brief allies since, the two have no particular closeness. As a whole, Rinzler respects Shiro's ruthlessness, recognizes him as both an ally of a friend and a potential enemy—and has a vague suspicion, somewhere in his processing, that Shiro's stated function is somehow what his should be.

Kuchiki Rukia stood between him and Quorra (a surviving ISO and Rinzler's canon enemy) when Rinzler was hunting the ISO. Rinzler subsequently attacked, and while he didn't fare poorly in the resulting fight, he also failed completely at gaining anything more than a battle. Though he's peripherally aware of her connection to other, less antagonistic associates, Rinzler holds nothing but hostility towards this threat—and a good deal of respect.

Aqua likewise opposed Rinzler in his pursuit of Quorra—and the program had very little idea how to deal with some of the magic she wielded. His battle with her (and her student Sora) would be difficult to describe as any kind of victory; while the program came away relatively uninjured, being frozen, fireballed, and levitated over the course of the fight did little for his sense of combat superiority. Since then, she's threatened him, fought in his Games, and on one occasion, helped him. Rinzler's not as sure about her as he could be, but for the most part, considers her an enemy and threat—and one worth taking very, very seriously.

One more interaction is relevant to Rinzler's arrival in a more immediate sense: while Soundwave won't be joining him in Abax at this time, Rinzler's being taken from right after the latest fight in the ongoing war the two have been engaged in. As a result, Rinzler's left arm (the dominant one, though he's more or less ambidextrous) will be broken on arrival. Which is to say, nearly broken off.

history: (If this is too long, these links should serve.)

Rinzler was originally written in 1982 by Alan Bradley as “Tron”: a security program, one of the first firewalls. His purpose was to monitor and protect the Encom system and run independently from admin control. When the AI running the system, the MCP (“Master Control Program”), seized Tron before he was even finished being updated and put him in the gladiatorial Games under its lackey Sark, he was briefly stymied in his goal.

Tron survived the Games, though, adopting the directive to “fight for the Users” in defiance of Sark and the MCP’s attempts to purge programs of their user-following beliefs. When one user, Kevin Flynn, was digitized into the system by accident, Tron joined him in escape and eventually destroyed the MCP, freeing the system. When Flynn returned a few weeks later, asking Tron to come join him a new system, the program agreed.

Flynn’s new system was an experiment, the user trying to create a world from the inside out. His primary assistants were Tron and Clu, a sysadmin written by Flynn with the directive to “create the perfect system”. When Flynn’s system started spawning ISOs—Isomorphic algorithms, self-generated programs written by no user, Clu determined the newcomers were a fault—an imperfection. Tron disagreed, and was stuck for awhile in the middle, trying to broker peace between ISOs and other programs (now dubbed ‘Basics’), while Flynn was largely absent, and Clu grew more and more aggressive.

Tron warned Flynn of the problems, but the user was only minimally concerned—and then Clu made his move. He attacked Flynn, trying to stop the user leaving the system while he pulled a coup from the inside. Tron defended Flynn enough to save the user, but failed to save himself. Clu defeated him—but contrary to what everyone else believed, Tron wasn’t derezzed (killed). Instead, Clu decided to test out his repurposing privileges: his abilities, as an admin, to rewrite a program’s code. Tron was recoded, filtered, reprogrammed—his independence and free will removed, his memories, name, and voice taken from him. With the black helmet hiding his face from the system, a second disk of restrictive code merged with his own, and his normally-blue circuits glowing corrupted orange, Tron was gone for all intents and purposes. Clu had his perfect enforcer: Rinzler.

Time inside the computer passes more rapidly than outside, and while just over 20 years went by in the outside world, Rinzler had a millennium to settle into his new existence. He was Clu’s weapon, his utterly obedient tool, and Clu used him to great effect. When Clu’s army destroyed the ISO strongholds, Rinzler was sent to hunt down those who remained. When rebellious programs took steps to free the system, they would find a black-helmeted shadow derezzing them with vicious precision. He was more than just a weapon—he was Clu’s champion, a symbol of his power—as demonstrated through the Games Clu set up, deathmatches of his captured prisoners, with Rinzler always there as the final opponent, the one to execute the last surviving offender and prove the invulnerability of Clu’s dictatorship.

Occasional errors would come up in Rinzler’s code, the program hesitating, reaching back for the self and freedom he had lost, but the rewrites were extensive, and Clu was always there, checking his disk, rectifying any imperfections that came up. It would take a truly impressive series of events to break fully through the reprogramming.

Such a thing was in the process of unfolding before Rinzler… well, went elsewhere. A new user entered the system: Sam Flynn, the elder Flynn’s son. Rinzler wound up facing him in the Games, sparing him (and speaking his first word in hundreds of cycles) upon recognizing him as a user. His processing was further disturbed when Clu successfully tracked down the original Flynn’s hiding place—and took Rinzler with to observe the now-empty abode. The program was just sent from the doomed End of Line club after the escaping users when his sensors went dark with unexpected shutdown, and he woke up somewhere new.

personality:

Rinzler’s personality manages to be completely direct and still overwhelmingly complicated. In short, he’s been reduced to the perfect weapon. He's utterly loyal to Clu, his admin and (re)programmer, incapable of even considering defiance. Though he's made progress in his time in Promenade, morals are still mostly foreign to him, and if there’s reason, he’ll kill as quickly as make friends—he’s far more used to the former, actually. He’s been forbidden speech or the removal of his mask (among other things), so ‘faceless drone’ is in many ways an accurate interpretation. That said, beneath the mask, he has a fully functioning mind and personality, if limited severely. Rinzler’s quick-thinking and adaptive, constantly alert for threats and orders. He only takes orders from Clu—or so he was programmed. He enjoys combat a great deal, and tends towards showmanship, drawing fights out unless he has a reason to end things quickly.

On an even deeper level, he’s constantly frustrated. Clu’s reprogramming left him without access to his memories, original directives, name, or much in the way of free will. Though warped by centuries of use and recoding, Rinzler is Tron beneath it all—and he’s furious. From time to time, the program will make efforts to access his restricted identity—and suffer crippling feedback as his systems punish the unauthorized attempt. This can happen by accident as well, if outside circumstances trigger memory or impulses his current programming doesn’t permit. While mostly futile, enough triggers and agonizing efforts can break through the filters somewhat—progress which, in his own world, is generally followed by deletion the next time Clu checks and ‘fixes’ his disk.

Rinzler’s disk is his personality, in a lot of ways—it’s his backup, his code, the lines that define him. Uniquely among all programs, Rinzler has two disks—his original one, as Tron, and an additional one repurposed to his use. They meld together seamlessly when he isn’t splitting them for combat, and by now, the code is effectively inextricable between the two; alterations are made to the joined disks. His code is a mess at first sight, a precisely balanced system at second—his original coding, as Tron, is carefully overwritten, restricted, and suppressed, with just enough permitted through to optimize his combat abilities. Those who are capable would be able to rewrite the program—or remove Clu’s rewrites—should they get ahold of his disks. Good luck doing so, if your name’s not Clu.

abilities/powers:

Rinzler is the elite combatant and most skilled warrior on the Grid. While he was originally written to protect and react to threats, he’s been reshaped and recoded continually for the last (literal) millennium to be a skilled hunter, assassin, and executioner. His weapons of choice are his disks: rounded weapons (think chakram) that can be activated for melee or ranged attacks, capable of cutting nearly any material.

In a fight, Rinzler’s greatest advantage is his speed and agility. The program is fast, capable of launching and defending multiple attacks at once, and will frequently evade with flips, leaps, or other improbable acrobatics. He’s also tactically intelligent, precise with his attacks, and far stronger than a comparable human. His combat skill is quite literally unsurpassed in his world, though he can be (and has been) taken by surprise and defeated.

As far as noncombat abilities go: Rinzler can activate coded overlays, personal illusions, effectively. The simplest of these just manipulate his own circuits, dimming the glow or masking the color, but he’s capable of simulating another’s appearance—most typically with a different program. He can track the movements of others, following electronic ‘footprints’ signifying their passage. He’s skilled at operating any number of primarily combative vehicles from his world: Recognizers, Lightjets, Lightcycles. As a security program, he can scan others: with programs, this provides data on their function, nature, and current state; with users the results are likely to be more haphazard. He's also capable of almost any degree of hacking—taking apart other programs’ code is literally what he’s designed for, though he'll need to get used to the interface.

While his outward appearance (sans mask and gridsuit) looks almost entirely human, Rinzler's actual composition is somewhat less standard. He's made of data and code, not flesh and blood. If injured, he breaks into "voxels": tiny cubelets that glow faintly with the same red-orange as his circuit lines. His perception is also somewhat different, partly due to said circuits—the program can instinctively detect motion and energy (and data, in his own world) with something more than typical sight or hearing. Rinzler consumes energy, generally by draining it passively from a digital environment, or more quickly from an ETC (energy transfer conduit). Though ingesting it is possible, he'd have to get the mask off first.

As far as weaknesses go, there are physical vulnerabilities, such as electrocution and strong magnetic fields. Extreme temperatures won't burn him, but can cause overheat and malfunction. But in the end, Rinzler's greatest weakness is internal, not external, the same vulnerability that's entrapped him for the last thousand years: recoding. Though his code's locked to Clu's signature, for anyone who can bypass that, Rinzler's a supremely easy target—he's been reworked to have even less control over how his disk syncs than most programs, forbidden so much as a glance at his code or memory files, and even as Tron, was never able to rewrite or fix himself. If someone capable of programming gets access to his disks, they can remake him however they choose.

first person sample: Here. Context: Rinzler just beat Quorra in ilpromenade, and is operating under the delusion that Clu's around to care about it.

third person sample: Rinzler's glitchytimes. Set several days into an event where Rinzler snapped and spent some time helping users instead of trying to kill them all.

case no: 02-07-03 (his designation number as Tron, flipped around).

Don't be offended; Rinzler assumes combat superiority unless very thoroughly proven otherwise.
● [ value ] — Actual like or dislike for someone, in more than a combat sense. Rinzler doesn't exactly know what this is, so it's rare for anyone to get anything positive. 1 or 2 means deep hatred, he'll take any chance or excuse to do harm. 4 or 5 indicates Rinzler actually cares, as much as he's capable—he'll fight his own directives to avoid harming you. 3 is standard sub-standard apathy.
* Curious about
† Previous opponent
◌ Source of conflict.

Quorra

Rinzler's first (clear) memories of Quorra are as the interloper on the lightcycle grid helping user: Sam_Flynn escape. Since coming to ilpromenade, she's been his primary target—the only one of the trio Clu told him to find to show herself openly here. While he respects her as a skilled combatant, he's never doubted he could defeat her.

While he was originally hunting her just as a matter of command, Rinzler's acquired some serious personal resentment against Quorra. She’s landed him in the Unnatural, referred to Basics as lesser, and Rinzler specifically as Clu’s pet. And worst of all, Quorra’s other claims were recently proven—that he used to be more. Rinzler wants to hurt her for that. He wants to destroy her. But mostly? He just wants her gone.

isomorphology

●●● ●● † ◌

Sam_Flynn

Encountering user: Sam_Flynn on the Game Grid kickstarted a lot of Rinzler's current conflicts. While he doesn't consider the other a significant threat in combat, Rinzler recognizes his unpredictability and potential to cause problems.

Sam_Flynn was also one of the targets Clu sent him after—and after going after Quorra, Rinzler did his best to hunt the user down. The resulting confrontation ended in injury, imprisonment, and torture for the program. While Quorra dealt most of the damage, the user's involvement affected Rinzler's own significantly. The enforcer may not hold (much of) a grudge, but he also has little reason—or desire—to seek out the user at present.

checksin

●● ●●● † ◌

Kurosaki_Ichigo

Without even trying, Ichigo managed to show more care for Rinzler's well-being in the space of an hour than the program's had from anyone for most of his existence. While Rinzler wasn't entirely capable of recognizing this, he did respond. Despite his increasing interest and competitiveness with what he's seen so far of Ichigo's skills, the user is uniquely not someone Rinzler wants to fight.

Ichigo is both the biggest source of conflict in ilpromenade and the person Rinzler values most. The user continually pushes him to move past his limitations and choose for himself what he wants to be—noticeably enough that in the program's recent de-aged stint as Tron, he gave Ichigo a copy of his disk—a backup that remains, despite Rinzler's reversion. Although the program's less-than-happy about the entire incident, at this point, Ichigo's very much earned his trust, respect, and to an extent, care. Rinzler would go to almost any lengths to avoid harming Ichigo, and under most circumstances, would actively try to help.

savior_n_black

●●● ●●●●● ◌

Shiro

Rinzler encountered Shiro when the hollow was hanging off the ceiling by his claws. That, combined with a creepily corrupted probe of energy, led the program to a clear conclusion: virus. He'd have gone after Shiro then and there if Ichigo hadn't gotten in the way.

His assumptions were challenged when he took down Quorra—and the 'virus' responded with his own rage—for Rinzler killing "an innocent person". Shiro defined his own function to Rinzler as protecting others at any cost, something that resonates uncomfortably close with the former security program. In some ways, he almost prefers the hollow's clear-cut anger and aggression—this, at least, he has a clear response to.

holeheart

●●● ●●● *

Rukia

Rinzler attacked Rukia while following Quorra's trail in an attempt to force her to disclose the ISO's location. This was less successful than he might have hoped—while he didn't fare poorly against the shinigami, he utterly failed to get anything but a battle from her.

After Quorra's defeat, Rukia joined the ranks of the furious and vengeful. Rinzler's not especially worried about her, but he does recognize she could pose a significant threat.

snowwhitesoul

●●● ●●● †

Knock Out

Rinzler has yet to actually meet Knock Out in person. His initial impressions over the network were of a mildly annoying but useful information source. This was promptly turned around when Knock Out claimed familiarity with Ram of all programs. He's been hostile and wary of Knock Out since then (more so since actually seeing what he looks like), which the mech has responded to with amusement and minor taunting.

auto_enthusiast

●●● ●● *

Aqua

Alongside Sora, Aqua was the first to intervene in Rinzler's pursuit of Quorra. The user showed extreme ability—somewhat with her blade, but more with something Rinzler had no idea how to handle—magic. The program did worse in the battle than he would have liked, and blames Aqua and her unfair abilities for it. Having been (in his own mind) humiliated by something he couldn't expect, Rinzler very much wants a rematch—or at the least, wants her gone.

Sora

Sora helped Aqua battle Rinzler, but the program wasn't overwhelmingly impressed with the other's skill in a fight—were the user on his own, Rinzler feels he could have taken him with little difficulty. The program did note him as a potential weakness for Aqua—an easier target that she cared about deeply, and would assist at all costs.

After Quorra's defeat, Sora responded to Rinzler over the network with understandable anger. What took the program utterly by surprise, however, was the mention of his name—that "Tron" would have hated him. This stirred up severe conflict for Rinzler; though his systems wiped memory of the event, he still holds a strange unease with this user.

ultimarecipe

●● ●●● † ◌

TARDIS

Rinzler first spoke to the TARDIS over the network, and was quickly disturbed by how much she seemed to know about him. He halfway suspects her of having scanned or hacked his systems somehow—despite knowing that shouldn't be possible, particularly without his notice. When she continued this trend on a face-to-face meeting, the program decided she was a security threat and attempted to delete her; he wound up incapable of finishing it on seeing her user form severely injured.

suchasadword

● ●● † *

Zaheer

Rinzler ran into the strangely shaped user and was curious. Zaheer, however was in a bad mood, so it turned to a fight. While Zaheer pulled back on injuring Rinzler and proving that the program wasn't human, Rinzler's own frustration was nowhere near resolved. He remains silently furious at the user, and would welcome a chance to finish their battle.

becomesking

●●● ●● †

Senka

Senka attacked him seemingly from nowhere with a strange control over the shadows around. While he didn't manage to hurt her, her attacks weren't damaging enough for him to count her as a true threat. Rinzler views her as some kind of system glitch or malware—worth deleting, but low priority compared to most of the threats around.

themshadows

●● ●● †

Fought (disks were drawn, attacks were made):

Sora

Aqua

Zaheer

Rukia

Senka

Ianto? (currently in progress)

TARDIS

Sean (Banshee)

Alex (Havoc)

Tim (Red Robin)

Snape

Quorra

...so 11 or 12 people.

Drew disks on:

(all of the above, plus)

Death (O.o is she the only one in the chase-post he didn't end up fighting?)

Shiro

...13-14 people

Made bleed (and promptly glitched at):

Sora

Aqua

Zaheer

Rukia

TARDIS

Sean

Snape (in progress)

...counting Quorra, that's 8 people injured.

Hit by:

Aqua (antigrav spell, 2 fireballs, ice spell)

Sora (fireball)

Zaheer (telekinesis, shadow-dagger)

Rukia (Sokatsui)

Senka (shadow-grabbed briefly; no real problems)

Sean (for maybe a second, sonic fails against those who can turn off their ears)

Snape (shield charm to the face at high speed)

Property damage:

A light post outside Ichigo's place (for lulz)

Trees in Rukia's Place of Solace?

The electricity in a building (XD yay, recharge!)

All the glass for streets around his fight with Banshee (not his fault B|)

<s>Likely</s> A good bit of everything nearby when Havoc got pissed (see above re:fault)

Lightcycle trails left all over the streets in one area. Severe traffic obstruction.

Window/whatever was inside getting broken as Rinzler pulled a disk disposal.

Exploded lightcycles.

Disk damage to walls everywhere.

<s>Talked to</s> Headtilted at in person without pulling a weapon on:

...Ichigo.

Lands in streets. WTF all over.

It's a... him. Meets Tron, glitches, promptly forgets entire event.

Hey, people! Attacks Ram and Ari, resulting in property damage and injury respectively. Doesn't believe Ram, has glitchy episode nearly resulting in the actuary's derezz. Everyone is sad.

CLU! HIS ADMIN! Only... extremely not with the helpful. Rinzler gets ridiculously vague orders (go attack everyone, dude!), absolutely nothing in the way of repairs or explanations. Heads off into the <s>night</s> Grid, confused about everything.

Sees a <s>mutated aberration of himself</s> Rinz-kitty-program. Fortunately(?) for his sanity, Flynn quickly reminds Rinzler that he is a terrible person who cares only about users and totally ditched him before. Ensue stable state of hatred.

Goes off to sulk. Runs into the best possible cure for his <s>self esteem issues</s> problems—himself. Warning for very impersonal wiki-description of violence, slavery, genocide, and a thousand years of mindrape.
✧ TIMELINE: About 2/3 through Tron: Legacy, when Rinzler's sent from the End of Line club to go chase users in his Recognizer.
✧ PERSONALITY:

Rinzler’s personality is both extraordinarily simple and overwhelmingly complicated. In short, he’s been reduced to the perfect weapon. He is utterly loyal to Clu, his admin and (re)programmer, incapable of even considering defiance. Morals are foreign to him, and if there’s reason, he’ll kill as quickly as make friends—he’s far more used to the former, actually. He’s been forbidden speech or the removal of his helmet (among other things), so ‘faceless drone’ is in many ways an accurate interpretation.

Rinzler’s identity disk is his personality, in a lot of ways—it’s his backup, his code, the lines that define him. Uniquely among all programs, Rinzler has two disks—his original one, as Tron, and an additional one repurposed to his use. They meld together seamlessly when he isn’t splitting them for combat, and by now, the code is effectively inextricable between the two; alterations are made to the joined disks. His code is a mess at first sight, a precisely balanced system at second—his original coding, as Tron, is carefully overwritten, restricted, and supressed, with just enough permitted through to optimize his combat abilities. Those who are capable would be able to rewrite the program—or remove Clu’s rewrites—should they get ahold of his disks. Good luck doing so, if your name’s not Clu.

✧ ABILITIES/POWERS:

Rinzler is the elite combatant and most skilled warrior on the Grid. While he was originally written to protect and react to threats, he’s been reshaped and recoded continually for the last (literal) millennium to be a skilled hunter, assassin, and executioner. His weapons of choice are his disks: circular weapons (think chakram) that can be activated for melee or ranged attacks, capable of cutting nearly any material. He also carries a pair of batons, which can be activated to ‘rezz up’ a lightcycle (glowy motorbike), lightjet (…jet), or grappling line—or used as weapons in and of themselves.

The simplest of these just manipulate his own circuits, dimming the glow or masking the color, but he’s capable of simulating another’s appearance—typically with a different program. He can track the movements of others, most easily within a digital setting, following electronic ‘footprints’ signifying their passage. He’s skilled at operating any number of primarily combative vehicles from his world: Recognizers, Lightjets, Lightcycles. As a security program, he can scan others: with programs, this provides data on their function, nature, and current state; with users the results are likely to be more haphazard. Also as a security program, he would be capable of almost any degree of hacking—taking apart other programs’ code is literally what he’s designed for, though he may take some time to get used to the interface.

✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: just after sunset
✧ MASK DESIGN: his helmet (he never removes it anyways). Black, slightly pointed, featureless except for a few dashes of circuitry. See icons.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: The Games arena from the Grid.

The arena is a fairly massive structure, with cells and preparatory rooms below (for the unwilling combatants), as well as training rooms, seating space for thousands, and, of course, the actual competition/combat zones. The active portion of the arena is somewhat malleable and full of minorly physics-defying attributes--the Disk Wars cages hover in the air, splitting and melding as opponents are derezzed, the Lightcycle Grid has levels and complicated ramps that can fade away to a flat blackness on (administrator) command, and gravity... well, don't get too used to it pointing a specific direction. Normally these features and more are manipulated at Clu's whim to make a fight more interesting; in his admin's absence, Rinzler would have control over it.

The arena has a lot of significance to Rinzler—and 'solace' perhaps is a poor phrasing of exactly how it will affect him. As Tron, he was once captive in a similar location, forced to fight others to the death. But this arena was originally set up much as a counterpoint to the first one—a chance for programs (Tron very much included) to challenge and compete with each other with no risk of derezz. That said, even before taking over, Clu changed the rules—added back the 'death' in deathmatches, something that pretty near ruined the Games for Tron. As Rinzler, the Games have been his killing ground—Rinzler is the 'final opponent' for most games, and acts as the Enforcer for the rest. They're both relief and frustration to him: on the one hand, it's violence, release, a chance to act and move and destroy rather than waiting silently amidst errors and uncertainty. But on the other hand, he's still caged, even in his own domain—even his victories aren't his own, when Clu controls and commands him. Rinzler's likely to be torn between wanting to avoid the arena and not quite being able to leave it be—and any partial or full recollection of his experiences as Tron will only increase the uncertainty.

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON:

It doesn’t matter.

I can hear the surging of the Arena crowd, circuits pulsing in a frenzy of excitement. Shouts, exultations. Release. Validation.

They don’t matter, either.

Head lowered, knees bent. I’m ready. Waiting. Still. Instructions flicker through my processing, a constant stream of protocol, command. Rigid, unbreakable structure. Definition.

(It’s all that defines me.)

Noise surges, a ticking rattle that echoes in the confines of my black shell. Pours out around, spills across the flat surface of the empty cage. It’s constant. Endless. I forget why.

Hands tense faintly, orange lines sharp and bright against the blackness. Memory doesn’t matter either.

Can’t matter. Isn’t permitted to matter. The thought hurts, code shifting sickeningly, as if in warning. It’s not true reprimand, not a true error. But close, wrong, and I can hear my sound cutting through the air around, frustration building in the only expression I have—rumbling, harsh, (broken)—

REDIRECT—

…

I’m waiting.

For my own release.

✧ THIRD PERSON:

Find them.

The order cycled through Rinzler’s processing as he piloted the recognizer on a downward course, automated functions controlling the simple maneuver of descent.

The users. The Creator.

Flynn.

The name was jarring, edged, cutting through his processing, and he didn’t know why. He knew the target—the whole system did. The user, the false creator, the one who had betrayed Clu’s vision. Imperfection.

...

Flynn (go).

Error: unauthorized access – memory—

Reprimand spasmed through his systems, a crackling shock of familiar pain. Automation took over, processing forcibly redirecting from the corruptible content as his noise hitched, stuttered, before returning to the unceasing rumble. Rinzler didn’t move, though. Didn’t flinch.

He was used to this happening.

Hand curled around the controls, circuitry surged with faint frustration before returning to the dim orange glow. The why didn’t matter—he wasn’t permitted a why. (Or a voice, or a name—but he had a name, he knew who he was, he had to—)

Redirect—

He had to find them.

Clu said so, after all.

The Recognizer landed with a soft thump, bridge sliding down to the base of the vehicle. Rinzler pushed off before it reached the ground, dropped in a controlled tumble, dark-suited limbs and glowing orange circuitry spilling down in a blur. He landed in a crouch, stepped towards the elevator’s base with even strides. No need for speed, not here. They would be gone by now.

But he would find them.

The doors were open, area undamaged. His fingers curled faintly, frustration rising again. It should be damaged—should have crashed, broken upon impact, derezzed voxels of program and structure merged in a shattered heap. But no. They were users. Able to write, rewrite, repurpose. Bend the system to their will.

They were wrong.

But Clu would fix them.

…He always does.

Rinzler’s an antagonist, but pretty much entirely because he’s forcibly coded to obey Clu. Given that coding, he tends towards the murdering psychopath route—he’s got no morals or tendencies to hold back, and enjoys a fight. That said, a number of events (such as overinteraction with <s>users</s> humans) could cause him to revert partly or fully to his original identity as Tron—who was a straight up hero, though how much is left is up for debate. Even as Rinzler, he’s unlikely to go on a murder streak without provocation or perceived cause. Long story short, I don't expect him to be attempting much villainy, and he could definitely wind up in the hero category eventually, but Rinzler will be starting in a highly reactive and hostile state of mind.

SUPERHERO NAME: …Rinzler. He, uh… doesn’t much understand the superhero thing.
ALTER EGO: …Rinzler? (he might figure one out. Eventually…)

BACKGROUND:
Rinzler’s history is a complicated mess. He was written in 1982 by Alan Bradley as “Tron”: a security program, one of the first firewalls. His purpose was to monitor and protect the Encom system and run independently from admin control. When the AI running the system, the MCP (“Master Control Program”) seized Tron before he was even finished being updated and put him in the gladiatorial Games under its lackey Sark, he was briefly stymied in his goal.

With the black helmet hiding his face from the system, a second disk of corrupted code merged with his own, and his normally-blue circuits glowing corrupted orange, Tron was gone for all intents and purposes.

He was more than just a weapon—he was Clu’s champion, a symbol of his power—as demonstrated through the Games Clu set up, gladiatorial matchups of his captured prisoners, with Rinzler always there as the final opponent, the one to execute the last surviving offender and prove the invulnerability of Clu’s dictatorship.

Such a thing was in the process of unfolding before Rinzler… well, found himself here. The program was just sent from the doomed End of Line club after the escaping users when his sensors go dark with unexpected shutdown, and he wakes up… somewhere new.

PERSONALITY:
Rinzler’s personality is both extraordinarily simple and overwhelmingly complicated. In short, he’s been reduced to the perfect weapon. He is utterly loyal to Clu, his admin and (re)programmer, incapable of even considering defiance. Morals are foreign to him, and if there’s reason, he’ll kill as quickly as make friends—he’s far more used to the former, actually.

POWER:
Rinzler’s greatest talent is and has always been his combat prowess. While he was originally written to protect, he’s been reshaped and recoded into a near-perfect hunter, assassin, and executioner. He's literally the most skilled fighter in his world—quick, tactically minded, prone to insane acrobatics and stunts. His weapons of choice are his disks: circular objects (think chakram) that can be activated for melee or ranged attacks, capable of cutting nearly anything. He also carries a pair of batons, used in the Grid to ‘rezz up’ vehicles or tools. Out of a fight, he’s shown several security program tricks: coded overlays (personal illusions), scans, tracking, and proficiency with a number of vehicles. He’s also intimately familiar with technology; once he adapts to the interfaces, hacking and the like should come naturally.

As far as what will transfer over, his fighting skill is just that—skill, no power. Rinzler's still a program, and his main "power" is retaining that. Not all of his in-Grid abilities will carry over, but what does will manifest in two stages: his own nature/existence, and his identity disks. Rinzler's human appearance is solely external. If injured or killed, he derezzes—voxels of code fall off in shiny little cubes. He can be repaired by those with programming skill and access to his disks, but he can't rewrite himself. He consumes energy (and will have fun figuring out how to recharge here). He's stronger and faster than humans can typically manage—though not enough to be clearly superhuman. He also has circuitry: glowing lines and dots of light on his gridsuit and skin. These can be hidden through either deliberate suppression or simply wearing a coat.

The truly useful part is his identity disks. Most humans aren’t capable of pulling glowy weapons from their back and stabbing you with them. His primary extranormal ability will be to summon and use his disks. This leaves him vulnerable to rewrite, but they’re enormously useful to him both as weapons and a backup. This will not manifest right away—when he first arrives in the city, he'll be diskless, and severely unhappy about it.

As far as secondary abilities are concerned, his more unusual program tricks won't work in this world. But if possible, I’d like him to manifest a secondary trait much later—limited technopathy. Not the ability to control machines, but the ability to digitize himself into an existing computer system—and basically run around inside being badass. This will make him extraordinarily efficient at hacking systems and retrieving data—and possibly let him travel between networked locations, once he's used to it. It’s also a weakness in several ways—if someone knows he’s coming, or is just extremely technically skilled, he could be captured, reprogrammed, or imprisoned in a system; if his code is isolated and changed externally, there's absolutely nothing he can do to resist from the inside. That said, he’s good enough, particularly on his own turf, to be able to manage for the most part undetected.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:

[Audio comes first. Initially, it seems like a bad connection—the feed’s emitting a harsh rattling noise, a staticky rumble. It sounds jarring. Broken.

Video is next, the screen activating to show a smooth, reflective mask. It’s black, completely opaque, with red-orange streaks that seem to glow from inside. The noise is coming from the helmet, it’s clear—or the person wearing it.

The faceless mask tilts slowly, as if in observation. There’s a faint skip in the ticking rattle. Then the feed goes dead.

Text appears.]

Query. Location: Clu?

[There’s a pause.]

Is this a Game?

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

Error.

Reprimand came in a crackling burst, wrecking through his processing as automation took over. Delete. Rewrite. Refilter.

He couldn’t remember why.

The helmet dipped faintly, and Rinzler’s grip tightened on the Recognizer’s controls. No memory, no thought—he knew better than to try. Queries rejected, access denied. He wasn’t meant to know why.

Redirect—

Targets in sight. Ahead, the solar sailer’s blue-white glow pulsed, clean and pure. No. Clean and wrong, painful and wrong. Tainted. By the users now in sight.

His sound rippled out through the air, voiceless noise, broken and jarring. It always was.

He was in range. Hands flicked to weapons systems with automated reflex, skeletal lines of circuitry a burning orange. He could fire. Delete the threats, the errors, in a burst of bright destruction.

No.

...Clu would want them alive.

He could close, launch himself from the more mobile vehicle to land, disks out, to defeat them—break them—himself. A thread of satisfaction ran through his processing at the prospect. The crash of disks, the shattering of derezzed data. Combat. Battle. Victory.

...Users don't derezz.

(Error.)

He stared, unmoving, ticking rumble rising with frustration.

Refocus. The targets. Two users, one program. Injured, but they had fixed her. Repaired, he corrected. Clu did the fixing. Again and again. This program was wrong, though. Different. He wasn’t in scanning range, but he still knew, remembered—

Error—

Reprimand. Punishment. Searing, edged, slicing through his processing as he reached for the memory, reached for something, reached…

What was he doing?

He couldn’t remember.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:

At the canon point I'm taking him from, Rinzler's already halfway to remembering who he used to be—he's gotten just far enough to frustrate and confuse himself, while still being controlled by Clu's restrictive code. The user world will break him. Rinzler was not (re)written for activity in any environment from his own, under anything but Clu’s direct control. Most of his adaptive coding comes from Tron, and sooner or later, the filters will break down under repeated attempts and triggers. Whether he comes out of that as Tron, Rinzler, or anything remotely sane is entirely uncertain. But he's not going to stay stable as he is.

As should be pretty clear, this is Tron/Rinzler from Tron:Legacy. I like the character, but don't feel much like recapping his entire history right now, so have a wiki.

My depiction (and info thereon):

Unless noted otherwise, my standard pull point is on the Rectifier. Specifically, right before he falls off the ledge from Quorra's kick.

For those who care why: he seems to be glitching ridiculously right around then. If you watch the scene closely... the first line said is Quorra's "Sam, go!" (sound familiar?). From that point on, Rinzler doesn't just get his ass kicked by a handcuffed opponent. He seems to quite literally freeze up and stand there with his disks doing nothing but dodging and staring at Sam unti Quorra knocks him off the edge.
Basically, I picked the point in the movie where he's still got his disks (just about to lose them), and is pretty much at maximum glitchery while still being Rinzler.

I keep separate continuities in different comms. This Tronzler in grid_lined is not the same as when I play him in sixwordstories. I do keep continuities as I play; for instance, Rinzler's first SWS post wound up turning his characterization there down a strongly different direction than he started...

Any thread where he's Rinzler (and potentially ones where he's Tron): expect nasty mindfuckery. I'm going with Rinzler not knowing he used to be Tron—and that ignorance being maintained by some pretty creeptastic coding tricks. Attempts to access 'corruptible' memory triggers automatic punishment from his systems. This continues escalating in a feedback loop if he resists; he's basically driven to either willingly forget/avoid whatever triggered it, or traumatized by his own systems 'till he can't hold on, whereupon the automatic processing takes over and deletes the event.

As relates to the previous point: this is not a split-personality Tronzler. When he's Rinzler, he's just Tron, cut down to something Clu can use, with little left in the way of memory, morals, or freedom. When he's Tron, he's not completely separate or restored to some base state—he's Rinzler, with the memory of who he was, the capacity to care about what he's done, and the freedom to choose his own actions. Depending on how things are going in any given universe, he may very well still have some Rinzler-specific coding: restrictions, filters, commands. He can't purge his code himself, though he can reprioritize things, find loopholes, work to ignore certain sections. When he's Rinzler, the memory issue is specifically significant, because he doesn't know he was Tron. Reminding him of that may trigger enough of a breakthrough for possible reversion, or it may just wind up deleted from his active memory again as his system implants an urge to murder whoever said it.

His reprogramming as Rinzler consists mainly of three things: filters, control systems, and commands/restrictions. The first keeps him from remembering who he is. The second co-opts his own functions to automatic responses—whether triggering pain for an attempted access, deleting a corruptible event from memory, or initiating a reflexive kill response to an external stimuli. The commands consist of both blanket directives: obey Clu, enforce the system rules, win Games, and also more specific or heavily encoded commands: never harm Clu, submit to disk checks without hesitation, don't speak or remove the helmet. None of the categories are clear-cut or entirely distinct; the summary above is just a way of summarizing a compex and overwhelmingly invasive mindscrew.

Other details: he's tall, as Tron in the first movie, but tends to stand in a way that makes that less than obvious. As Rinzler, it's almost impossible to tell; he's near-constantly coiled, drawn in, in an almost half-crouch of readiness or obedience. As Tron, he tries to stand at his full height, but will sometimes (often) slip back to a more familiar hunch, particularly under stress. He's got the red-orange circuits as Rinzler, blue-white as Tron—no changes in pattern. His disks have a blue-white outer ring when active; the inner ring matches his circuit color. Unless he reverts to Tron without going through substantial code changes (via overcoming the memory blocks and reprioritizing commands sufficiently). In that case, he'd still have orange disks, but his circuit colors would revert. While he's Rinzler he won't speak—it's an imperfection, according to Clu—unless he's having some kind of breakthrough, or in the overwhelmingly unlikely chance his admin tells him to.

What You Can Do to Tronzler...

Just about anything.

Preferred you PM me or communicate somehow if you plan to do anything potentially permanent— reprogramming (in either direction), maiming, derezz. But none of these things are off-limits; the guy's unstable as frack, and there will be relatively few interactions that don't reflect that in some form or another. He's ridiculously good in a fight, but he also tends towards overconfidence, inexperience with anything not of the Grid, and oh yeah—a boatload of mental issues that could send him from active combatant to flickering heap on the ground within seconds. Or vice versa.

His behavior towards others varies strongly depending on how his code's doing at any given point; as Tron, he's likely to be more wary than anything else, whereas Rinzler is aggressive to a number of triggers and unlikely to hold back. Both iterations don't tend to back down from an offered fight, and actively enjoy combat. If there's anything you'd specifically want to avoid, definitely let me know.
