Pierre Groger: A Balance in Life and in Wine
An interview with Husseren-lès-Châteaux vigneron Pierre Groger, who produces scintillating micro-cuvées in his time off from work for his neighbor, Bruno Schueller.
The COVID lockdowns occasioned a career change for Husseren-lès-Châteaux natural vigneron Pierre Groger, who’d spent the previous ten years running erstwhile Colmar natural wine bistrot Cézanne Bistrot à Vin. (Cézanne still exists; its upstairs bistrot is no more.) Groger took on a few tiny parcels of pinot noir, riesling, and gewürztraminer from his parents, retiring winegrowers, and began to work full time in vineyard work, first at Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, and now at the estate of the vigneron whose work first initiated him to natural wine in the early 2000s: Bruno Schueller.
Despite sharing much of the same philosophies regarding natural winemaking and the work-life balance, Groger differs with his employer on certain key aesthetic issues, which sets his own wine production quite apart.
