Oregon: Governor Signs Legislation Into Law Permitting Patients To Consume Cannabis in Residential Healthcare Facilities

Salem, OR: Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek has signed legislation (HB 4142) into law permitting qualified patients to consume certain medical cannabis products in eligible residential healthcare facilities.

The law, which takes effect on January 1, 2027, requires designated facilities that provide either hospice or palliative care to accommodate medical cannabis use by state-licensed cardholders on their premises. Facility employees will also be required to undergo cannabis-specific training before providing care to eligible patients.

Colorado lawmakers approved a similar law earlier this year, permitting terminally ill patients to access medical cannabis products in eligible hospitals. Lawmakers in Virginia also recently approved legislation “specifying that hospital staff may store, dispense, and administer cannabis oil when a patient has valid certification.”

Similar legislation is pending in several other states, including Connecticut, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania.
