You're the Worst, you guys. YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS SHOW. For me, it's easily among the top five best quality shows in production right now. It's funny but also deals with real emotions in an honest way. These icons ended up almost all Gretchen which is no surprise since I love her and relate to her struggles with clinical depression and her red hair is fun to work with. And then there's Lindsay! Kether Donohue is a comedic genius. I always find myself rewinding to hear her line delivery again and again. The friendship between Gretchen and Lindsay is my everything. I wanted to make one of Edgar because he's amazing and the least worst of all of the characters but I couldn't resist my infatuation with Gretchen.

This month's theme at 20muses was Keep It Simple which obviously I was thrilled to see! I love making minimalist icons where it's all about the crop, color, and light. It's my favorite type of icon to make and to use. I didn't intend to organize them by level of vibrancy but as I started to put the post together, I thought they looked better that way so I ended up going for that. Maybe it's because it fit my mindset as I had just completed the 10in30 challenge Vibrant + Muted which was also a lot of fun.

The other icons are alternates from the the 20muses and 10in30 sets, a challenge at theiconthrone, and the March Maker Activity at tasteislife.

Idk, you guys. I had a rough day working on this set for 10in30. The theme was textures and I chose option three, a grab bag with 10 textures I was required to use at least once. Some of the textures I loved and found immediately inspiring. Others I ended up using in ways I wasn't anticipating. Others made me want to tear my hair out. Accordingly, the icons range from ones I love and hate. I also didn't end up iconning as many characters as I wanted to. :( Next time, I suppose! And then there's something wrong with my layer mask settings in Photoshop because it was doing unexplainable nonsense which was really frustrating and meant I had to extract the image from the background in one go instead of baby steps like I prefer. x____x

I actually completed a set for a 20in20! It's been forever since I've done that. This is my set for 20muses. The theme this month is "IN COLOR" and if you haven't seen it already, check out the inspiration post because it is beautiful. I chose the easy mode and I'm glad I did because I struggled to get these done with what's going on in real life. I don't think I could have handled the extra stress of normal or hard mode! I ended up switching my claim from iZombie and The 100 to The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, which I didn't end up using.

Easy mode required that you make 5 icons using primary colors, 5 using secondary colors, 5 using tertiary colors, and 5 with neutral colors and that's the order these are displayed. It was a challenge for me working with specific colors, some of which don't fit the show as well as others. Also, the easiest way to do this challenge is to work with bright colors which is not my style or taste so that was interesting, sometimes frustrating, to work with too. (Like, I could do neutral toned icons for daaays!)

It's the last day of the year and the last chance I have to post the icons I made in 2015. Which is not many unfortunately and hopefully I can do better next year. I haven't posted since June! I was feeling really uninspired and hadn't made enough to post and then they just kind of piled up. Tbh, that amazingly challenging month at 20inspirations kind of took everything out of me. (This explains the green-haired Lydia icon. After that challenge, I couldn't Normal anymore, lol.)

step one: cropping and prepping the base First, I crop the cap. When you have a road or path in your image, it's nice to include the end of the road as seen in the cap. It gives a sense that the character is going somewhere (or has been somewhere if the figure is facing the other direction.) Also, the natural shape of the road frames the character and it's always nice to use elements naturally in the cap to frame the subject.

It's a dark cap so I brighten it a lot using a curves adjustment layer. I grabbed the middle of the RGB line and pull it up and to the left. (The dot is at Output: 183, Input: 74.) Then I stamp the icon into a new layer and set that to Soft Light, 100%.

step two: inverting the image I invert the image by using a gradient map adjustment layer. The first color is #FFFFFF at the location 0% and the second is #0a0d0f at the location 72%. It looks like this:

step three: some texture I add a texture by fuuurs and set it to subtract, duplicate that layer and rotate it 180° still set to subtract. Then I used a gradient map adjustment layer with the default Black, White gradient to make the icon b&w.

step four: duplicating the image I stamped the icon into a new layer and duplicated it twice. On the first duplicated layer, I moved the image to the left so the figure was duplicated and set it to Screen 70%. Then I erased the parts of the layer I didn't want. On the second duplicated layer, I moved the image to the right set it to Screen 70% and repeated the erasing from the previous layer.

step five: final steps Last, I sharpened the icon and then blurred the spots that were too sharp.

Step One: Cropping I always start with cropping. I knew I wanted to work with a dark side and a light side so I cropped in a way that put her face at the center. The left of the icon will be my dark half and the right will be my light half.

Step Two: Prep Work Both top corners are distracting, especially the one on the left. In a new layer, I picked a black/brown color from the background and drew over the background in that corner. I'll work on the top right corner later on but for now, in a new layer I draw a light color over the background and then I used gaussian blur on the layer. I don't know how necessary it is in the end but that's what I did.

It needs to be brighter before I can go any further. I frequently use curves adjustment layers to brighten. I just grab the line somewhere in the middle and drag it up and to the left to my liking.

Step Three: Light! This is one of my favorite tricks. Using the Gradient Tool and the default Black/White gradient, I make myself a gradient. This tool can be found on the left sidebar in the same spot as the Paint Bucket Tool. If you play with this, you'll see how it works. Different angles will work for different images. Basically, I wanted to reinforce the dark and light sides and this is a great way to do that. This layer is set to soft light.

Step Four: Figurative Fire This icon was for the prompt "fire" so I wanted to ensure that her red hair looked as red as possible. I picked a color from her hair and drew over what I wanted to be redder then I set that layer to soft light. After that, I created a Vibrance Adjustment Layer and increased the vibrancy up to 100. Next, I think I drew some orange color over her face, gaussian blurred the layer, and set it to soft light but it's really hard to tell what happened here in the .psd.

Step Five: Sharpening and Not I create a stamped layer and I use High Pass to sharpen. (Filter > Other > High Pass...) I usually pick a number between 1.0 and 2.0. This layer is set to soft light though some other blend modes might work better for your image or what you're going for. I create another stamped layer and then use the blur tool where the image has gotten too sharp. In this case, I blurred some spots on the light side of her face.

After this, I wanted to start dealing with that top right corner. I took a black color and drew over the light spots and then lowered the opacity of the layer to 35%. It takes away some of the brightness there.

Step Six: Selective Color I want to make it even redder/oranger so I use a Selective Color adjustment layer and for the reds, I set cyan to -62.

I guess I wanted more definition to her face on the left side so I brightened it a bit by drawing a light color over that part of her face and then gaussian blurring it and setting the layer to screen.

Step Seven: Even More Orange I draw over the right side of the icon with an orange and gaussian blur it. I brighten it some more using another curves adjustment layer like I used in Step Two.

In a new layer, I draw that orange color on the sides and a warm brown in the middle. I gaussian blur that layer, set it to screen at 35%.

(There's a step here and I'm not sure what it is so I'm skipping it.)

Step Eight: Finalizing I stamp the layer for the last time and use the blur tool to smooth some of the edges that need it. Typically, the more your brighten darker areas on a face, the more you'll start to see some image quality issues so it's a good idea to blur those when you're almost finished with the icon.

Mini Tutorials from the First Quarter of 2014

A few months ago, I posted about taking mini-tutorial requests. I'm really the worst at getting things done if they have no deadline especially when other projects have deadlines. I was going to get started on this again but then Ask the Maker 6.0 was posted (my thread is here) and I decided to scrap my plans for the icons I hadn't written mini-tutorials for and the just post what I finished. There were 18 of these planned so this is drastically shorter than I originally intended. If I didn't get around to your request, I'm really sorry. You can always request it again at Ask the Maker!

So I'm not repeating myself throughout the post, these are a few things that I use frequently. If you know your way around PS, you probably know all this already.

• A stamp layer (ctrl+shift+alt+E in PS) is a new layer that is a merged copy of the visible layers.
• The paint bucket tool and gradient tool can be found in the same place. The paint bucket tool is exactly what it sounds like. Others might use color fill layers (Layer > New Fill Layer) for the same purpose. The gradient tool is really useful for lighting. You can use any gradient you have set up but I almost always use the default black-to-white gradient. I just click and drag my mouse in a random or strategic direction which results in something like this and that usually gets set to soft light.
• Gaussian blur (filter > blur > gaussian blur...) set to various radius values is something I use fairly often.
• There are lots of ways to sharpen but I usually use high pass sharpen (filter > other > high pass...) on a stamped layer. The value is usually somewhere between 1.5 and 2 pixels then I set that to soft light. More or less pixels depending on how sharp I want the part of the image to look.
• Curves adjustment layers (layer > new adjustment layer > curves... or use the adjustments window) are used for lots of things but a basic way I use it almost every icon is to brighten the image. Picking a random spot in the middle of the line and dragging it up and to the left will brighten the image, down and to the right will darken it.
• Gradient maps are another adjustment layer. I always use the black/white gradient to make my work black and white and it can also be used to change the color of an image or like you'd use a color fill layer to color an image. If you click the dropdown menu in the adjustments window, a pop-up menu will appear where you can choose between the default and custom gradients you have saved.

01. Game of Thrones

I'm am 95% sure the first thing I did after cropping this was use the smudge tool to get rid of some rocks that were in the background between the shore and the larger rock in the background. This helped balance the composition and emphasis the natural blocking of the cap.

I duplicated the base twice, set both to Screen: the first set to 100% opacity and the second to 49%. Next is a stamped layer set to Soft Light at 41%. Then an curves adjustment layer where all I did was move the dot to the left up to Output: 22, Input: 0. Next I used this gradient texture by vetica set to Soft Light 100% and then duplicated that same layer, same blend and opacity settings. I sharpened using High Pass Sharpen. Finally, I used another curves adjustment layer and moved that same lefthand point to Output: 35, Input: 0. This lowers the contrast and brightens it a bit.

02. The Lion King

This is one of those that I cropped and then rearranged. The bottom of the original crop looks kind of messy but I love the green above the log so I duplicated the base twice. This is one of those icons that really shows the rule of thirds in action. The first duplicated base I moved up the canvas so the characters were in the upper third of the icon. The second was arranged above the base of the log in a way that I liked then I had to smudge out the top of Pumbaa's head.

I then made a stamp layer of what is now my new base. Curves to brighten then a stamped layer blurred a lot using gaussian blur set to soft light 100%. Then this is set to screen, 66%. I don't remember what this was originally but it looks like a texture heavily blurred. Then this texture set on screen at 75%. I liked the brightness of the background but the characters are too bright so I made a stamp layer, set it to multiply, 100%, and erased everything but the log and the characters. Finally a black and white texture is arranged at the base of the icon and set to screen.

03. Teen Wolf

This was my icon for the "bizarre" prompt at a challenge at the7days. To begin, I picked two caps from Riddled that had Stiles in the same position so I could crop them identically. Basic coloring + a grunge texture. I don't have the psd for the work done before I put the parts into the psd that would become a gif.

The icon consists of a few frames: Stiles with eyes open, same cap with texture, same cap with same texture rotated 90°, Stiles with eyes closed, and a plain white color fill layer. The texture is this by pandavirus, desaturated and inverted colors set to screen over the main cap.

The psd probably explains it better than I could. Make sure your Animation window is open (Windows > Animation). The big struggle here was getting it below 40k. I don't work with gifs often so this was an agonizing process.

04. Veronica Mars

I really love the bright yellow lockers on this show. I'm attempting a Veronica Mars rewatch so I decided I needed to make some icons with this yellow lockers.

Like the Game of Thrones icon in the top row, the first then I did was smudge out some awkward parts of the locker and the numbers written on them in the top right corner. It's not necessarily something that needs to be done but I thought they were distracting and drew the eye away from the subject.

I brightened the icon using curves and then made a gradient using the gradient tool. This gradient looks like this. This is set to Soft Light, 100%, and then duplicated with the same settings. Then I picked a bright yellow color (#e8e613) and drew around Veronica to emphasize the yellow of the background. This is set to Soft Light, 100%, then duplicated and set to Soft Light, 35%. It's a little dark for my tastes so I made a stamp layer, set it to screen and the lowered the opacity to something not too bright, 24%. I sharpened then using High Pass sharpen. Then I added whatever this was originally, erased over Veronica, and set it to Soft Light, 100%. Finally, I used a color balance adjustment layer with the midtones set to 0, -17, -41.

05. Game of Thrones

The downside to working with caps from Daenerys's scenes is that they can get overly orange. I hesitated to work with this cap because of that so I was thinking the whole time about how to avoid the orange.

I brightened the cap using a curves adjustment layer then set a stamped layer to soft light, 100%. It was already more orange than I'd like so I used a vibrance adjustment layer and set the vibrance to -38, saturation to 0. I made another stamp layer and used gaussian blur on it, then set it to soft light, 100%. Next, I used a gradient map (#c9b9a9 to #fcf2e4), set the layer to soft light, and decreased the opacity to 41%. Another gradient map layers using the default copper gradient was next (set to soft light, opacity 41%). Next I sharpened using high pass sharpen then I have this set to soft light, 100%. I didn't label this and I can't figure out it's origin. It might be something I made from the gradient tool or it might be a texture heavily blurred. The icon is finished with three adjustment layers: a vibrance layer with vibrance: 0, saturation: -66 set to soft light, 100%; another vibrance layer with vibrance: -23, saturation: 0 set to normal, 100%, and finally a brightness/contrast layer with brightness: 0, contrast: -21.

I brightened the cap with a new curve adjustment layer then made a stamp layer and sharpened it. On a layer filled with black, I picked two random bright colors and applied them to different sides of the canvas, and gaussian blurred the layer. (Looks like this.) I set that to screen. (Looks like this.) I made another stamped layer and set that to soft light for contrast. Using the standard Black White gradient map adjustment layer, I made the icon greyscale. (Looks like this.) It needs more contrast so I use curves again, this time moving the dot in the bottom left corner to the right (Output: 0 Input: 26), more or less depending on the image and what you're going for. Gradient by vetica, rotated 180° set to soft light then duplicated and set to soft light, 20%.

This set for this month's challenge at 20inspirations is pretty far outside my normal style. The theme this month asked us to think outside of the box and push the limits of cropping, coloring, composition, and other tools at an iconmaker's disposal. Generally with this kind of theme, I'm not sure what's weird in a good way or weird in an ugly way so some of these might fall into the negative category for you and that's okay. I had a lot of fun working on these so even if the result is just okay, the experience is a good one. In this set, I've used a lot more obvious texture than I typically do and I tried to do the opposite of what I instinctively do when it comes to cropping, coloring, sharpening, and/or contrast. When I got to a point where I might usually stop, I pushed a bit further. Even the simpler icons feature cropping, coloring, or level of sharpness that I would never use outside of this prompt. I'm anxious to hear what people think of these!

Making this quick before I go out of town! This is my set for tvshow20in20. This month's theme is focused on the four elements and I was lucky to have already claimed Game of Thrones. Working on this set was not quite how I thought it would be. The element I thought would be the hardest for me turned out to include my favorites of the batch and I had trouble with some of the elements I thought would be easier.
