Thanks to mylodon for sharing this Lent and to our readers and occasional commenters -as it turns out the 'news' in the mainstream media and the nutty fruitcake media (sometimes hard to distinguish these days) has been even more dire than we could have known when setting out on the course of deliberately highlighting good news stories.
It makes the stories hard to find, and in the face of the tough stuff it is often tempting to be drawn into going into a different mode, but these stories of boundary= crossing kindness and love and of the concern for others and the simple actions that change lives, need telling.Just looking for them in itself has been a fascinating exercise.

As you may tell I posted this before going on to read mylodon's entry for Lent 44 -and have managed to highlight the same story :) As it is such a good story I am leaving it up for today as well.

I have, inevitably, thought about not posting this morning ,being along with my fellow Brits and many others taken up in the shock and emotion of yesterdays attack in London but I did not think it for very long. Westminster Bridge is of course a place of great symbolic significance and striking at the heart of a great city, whether New York,Brussels, Paris or Berlin or anywhere is done because the psychological impact is great and memories persist- say those names to me and I can picture all of them as many of us can having been tourists ourselves.They all represent people too -New York means seeing the sunshine on a Brooklyn afternoon out of her apartment window while skyping with eglantine_br,Berlin means eating lunch in a Cafe in Unter den Linden with esteven and Paris eating ice cream on a ridiculously warm September day under the Eiffel Tower with amaraal.
That is just the point of course - that terror strikes in one place and may kill and injure those immediately in the area but if it strikes our imaginations too it increases the effect multtiple times
so its not my original story for today but here is good news of a profound sort in its own way -this thoughtful piece by a reporter who was present in Westminster

After mylodons story yesterday about the scouts helping children in refugee makeshift camps this is another story of some young people making a grim environment better and one which deserves to be better known for the reasons Ali,the inspirational young graduate who started the programme says in this excellent BBC story from Baghdad Nearly 400 young men and women,from Sunni,Shia and Kurdish backgrounds bringing beauty to ugly walls that divide their city and messages of hope and unity.

Today's good news is about how a kind thought and a family's generosity and imagination changed a wrong into a right. Jennie Platt,a Manchester estate agent and mum of 2 sons, felt incensed that spikes had been placed on an office building in a place which might be a semi sheltered place for homeless rough sleepers.Her two sons agreed with her so, after rugby practice on the next Saturday when the boys recruited two other friends,they all raced down to the shops and bought loads of cushions to cover the spikes with and sandwiches and chocolate and added a sign welcoming people to sit down and rest and have a snack.Jennie was realistic about the fact that it was a gesture and could not last but said that she just had to do something because that was not a Mancunian welcome.

The great part 2 to this story is that the spikes were subsequently removed following publicity of Jennie and the boys' actions.

Following on from the thoughtful interview with Keegan Hirst there is a related post in today's headlines which is in the good news category,though again there is clearly more one aspect of it which will also invite knocking and criticism. This is the announcement by Disney that the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film will feature its first gay character who will have a 'love scene'. All kinds of things can and will be said about this but it counts as another milestone and even if a few children watch it - or indeed adults and identify with the character and find it helps them then it will have been worth it.
