Summary: The Mandarin’s attack on Malibu was broadcasting live. Millions watched while Iron Man fell; it’s only reasonable to assume some of them were his friends. This is Steve’s reaction to watching the attack on the Malibu house.

I want to write a fic where The Avengers are chilling one night, everyone but Tony. And Pepper calls Bruce and she's all "I know it's a lot to ask, but would you check on Tony? He says he has a conference but I know he's lying and I think he isn't handling the break up as well as he says and -"

And Bruce is all "Wait, you guys broke up?"

And Pepper's like "A month ago."

So the Avengers are all, well, let's go make sure Tony's not drinking himself to death and they track him down in Vegas where he has a checklist of things he is going to do now that he's over Pepper. And they're like... that actually sounds kind of healthy? Okay. And then they see the list, but they're already committed.

The list includes:
-Getting super wasted (Natasha waters down all Tony's drinks. He knows she's doing it but he CAN'T CATCH HER and the bartender thinks she's hot and won't rat her out.
-Going to a strip club
-Buying a strip club (this one is penciled in on the margins)
-Blowing Phil's annual salary at the gaming tables (Phil compromises with Tony that they'll just blow Clint's annual salary and Clint spends the rest of the hour pouting)
-HOOKERS (this one is crossed out in four or five different colors of ink, but Tony actually ends up sneaking away and hiring a hooker named Bella who wants to be a ballerina and she and Natasha disappear for a while which makes Steve's head hurt a little)
-Drunk marrying a celebrity (Steve takes the hit on this one for reasons even he doesn't understand, but hey it's not like it's LEGAL and no one's taking it seriously, right? but when Tony sobers up the next morning they find out that someone leaked cell phone footage of them getting married and there are people throwing parties in the streets all over the country and there are all these Senators and politicians and judges being all "uh - yeah, right if Captain America says so I am ALL FOR IT SURE" And Tony's like oh my god we can't get divorced NOW
And Steve's all "We absolutely can't"
So Clint throws them a wedding party and Pepper is all "I am never asking any of you for a favor EVER AGAIN YOU ARE TERRIBLE" and Tony calls her his little strawberry and she hits him with her purse but they're good.)

There will be a scene where Drunk!Tony and mostlydrink!Clint scale something wildly inappropriate and throw gummy bears at passers-by. They may carry Bruce up with them and leave him there.

The weekend was not long enough. I'm not feeling all this "work" nonsense. Tomorrow is coming way too fast.

I did get my assignment for the Cap_Ironman fanfic exchange and I'm super excited. One of the prompts was perfect. The story basically wrote itself in my mind as soon as I read it. This is a good thing as last year's fic (which I still like a lot) was rewritten four or five times until I literally ended up writing 9000+ words in one sitting the night AFTER it was due and then frantically editing once it was posted. I still like the dialogue from that fic, I think I did a good job with Tony's voice. One day I will finish the sequel, as the part I finally ended up posting as a completed fic was only meant to be the first chapter.

And speaking of writing, I got another three or four pages done on the next chapter of Newsprint. Technically I could post it now, but I want to let it sit for a day or two, then reread it to make sure anything I typed actually makes sense.

The one thing I did accomplish this weekend was that I took the rest of those silver coins to the dealer and have a big fat check to deposit tomorrow morning. I have no idea what I'm going to do with myself when I pay this debt off, but I suspect it will involve me feeling vaguely giddy and dancing quietly in my seat. Alcohol may be involved.

Also, I have a heavy urge to watch Due South. I don't know where that's coming from, it's been years.

Bitch either has nerves of steel or is really high right now. Not sure which.

I'm kind of excited! I work in a bank, and the bank has a bunch of safe deposit boxes that are reserved for official use. We call them lockers, though they're right next to the ones that we rent out to customers and look almost identical except that they have combination locks instead of keys. Well we just got a new manager and she was going through everything a few months ago, trying to figure out how bad a mess our previous manger had left her (in summary: huge) and she realized she didn't have the combination to one of the lockers. So she goes to all the employees and none of us have the combination - none of us even know what's in there or have ever opened it. So she got a locksmith and drilled it and there was a few thousand dollars worth of silver coin in there.

Near as anyone can figure out, the last time that money was accounted for was almost 40 years ago (1973). The bank was using the silver dollars and half dollars as petty cash. The manager at the time was fired and escorted from the building and nearly everyone else was fired or left shortly after. Fast forward 40 years, twenty managers and three mergers and the money's long since been written off.

So our regional vp agreed to let the employees buy the coin at face value and donated the money to the local public schools. And in the meantime I've got a really interesting pile of old coins to play with.

It's silly, but it's like finding buried treasure. ^_^

I did a quick search and no immediate horror stories popped up, but a first hand endorsement always makes me feel better about giving people a lot of money.

Terra Nova is on Netflix streaming, so I figured why not. Dinosaurs and time travel and survivalism yay! But seriously, this show is not good. I mean, I'll probably keep watching it because, in case you missed it, dinosaurs, time-travel and survivalism, but this is so bad. The writing is pretty mediocre and the details are just... Everyone's wearing work boots except the hot teenage girl who's wearing read leather boots. Not high-heeled, at least. They were only allowed to bring one backpack full of personal belongings, but they all seem to have a wide variety of impractical clothing. I mean, why does Skye have a bikini? A BIKINI. Was that ever considered essential? Also there are hippies!

The mom is awesome so far. Dr. Elizabeth Shannon, played by Shelly Conn is pretty kickass. She was recruited to join the colony and was told she could only bring two children with her so she broke her husband out of prison and counterfeited documents so he could smuggle their daughter through the gateway. And when he got caught she took the kids and went without him. Her husband is a dumbass, but I think I'm supposed to consider him a take-charge hero type. Mostly I just think he's a dumbass. The teenage son is angsty and falling in with a bad crowd and drinking OMG. That is all there is to his personality so far.

The teenage daughter (in the red leather boots. I blame costuming, not her) is smart and I love her. She's a total nerd and spends part of every episode geeking out about the dinosaurs and time-travel. If she doesn't get to kick dinosaur ass at some point I will pout.

There's some believable political maneuvering and familial in-fighting. The dialogue occasionally has moments of awesome. Mostly during dinosaur attacks:

Taylor: *calm, kind of curious* "What's going on back there?"
Jim: *flailing wildly* "Just keep - DRIVING!"

It does have a couple of things going for it besides the aforementioned FREAKING DINOSAURS. The married couple have been apart for two years and they don't immediately fall back into bed together. And their attempts to resume their regular married life are nicely done. There's more than a few POCs in the cast too, though the majority of the main cast are all white.

So it's not very good, but it is kind of fun. I'm mostly watching it to mock it and occasionally cheer on the dinosaurs.

Shovel fics are so hit or miss for me. I don't seek them out and rarely read them unless I know the tone of the story. If they're written right they can be fun (I like protective friends who don't just disappear into the woodwork when the Main Character gets a Love Interest). But way too often they end up coming across as emotional abuse. Like, okay. If Pepper Potts was all "Steve you're a hell of a man and I respect you and I know you love Tony but he needs someone who's going to be patient and kind with him and if you go into this and treat him badly I will stab you with my pointy, pointy shoes" and it's written that she's not LITERALLY threatening his life and they're both friends and no one is hurt or offended by it, then it can be cute and even kind of touching. But if Pepper was all "You've hurt him before and I don't trust you not to hurt him again so you will be a good boyfriend or I'll kill you" that is not okay.

The shovel talk in real life always strikes me as pretty fucking disgusting. First of all, you're basically threatening the Love Interest into staying in the relationship. "Treat him right or I'll kill you" is a fucking threat. Also, what a shitty way to treat someone who loves your friend. Now, if the conversation was more "Steve, I have genuine concerns about your relationship with Tony and how you've been treating him" that's another thing.

(I read a surprisingly good fic where Clint's handler was abusing him and Tony recognized all the signs of physical abuse from one of his past relationship and went after Coulson, but it wasn't a shovel talk, it was straight up "Are you hurting him? No, then we need to find out who the hell IS" which is something else entirely).

Second of all, way to be a complete ass to someone your friend loves/likes a whole lot/is taking out for a test drive. If I found out any of my friends threatened to kill my SO when s/he hadn't done anything to deserve it, I'd be pissed beyond words. Way to respect my fucking judgment, not to mention show respect to someone I care about.

(There's a Clint/Tony fic where everyone gives Tony the shovel speech, some of them unintentionally, and Tony ends up in a bad head space where he decides that if he's doing such a terrible job of being Clint's boyfriend that his entire support group felt the need to call him out on it, then he must be terrible and ended up breaking up with Clint. Clint, upon finding out why his boyfriend left him, proceeds to lay out the entire team which was really fucking gratifying to read, let me tell you.)

Anyway, this rant was inspired by a shovel fic that could have been cute and ended up being kind of emotionally abusive and left me kind of shook up.

I am way too attached to books sometimes. Also, there is no good reason why I have two copies of all the Starsky and Hutch novels. There's barely a good reason why I have one of each, two is very hard to justify. But I can't bring myself to throw them away. Books are not for throwing away!

At least I found a good home for the A-Team and CI5: The Professionals books.

I am really unhappy with the optometrist I'm seeing in Richmond. I picked him out of the provider list that they give us at work, based solely on how long the drive was and whether I thought I could find his office without getting lost or needing GPS, so I'll own that I didn't exactly check his references. But I'm entirely pissed off anyway. It's been two months and I still don't have a trial pair of contacts - despite telling him when I made the appointment that I was out of contacts and needed to renew my prescription quickly. Now I'm going in for the trial pair and apparently I still don't have a prescription and I need to pay for ANOTHER office visit? Which, for the record, my insurance will not cover. Meanwhile I've been wearing the same pair for more than two months and I'm really, really nervous about losing one of them. I'm so pissed off at this doctor.

Question!

I'm watching season three of White Collar instead of editing the story I swore I'd work on tonight. (Yay for procrastination! Netflix streaming has made it so much easier to avoid writing!)

So - spoiler alert! I'm only on episode three, so there's not much to give away, but just in case.

Right now I'm officially not liking season three. Neal and Peter being - for all intents and purposes - enemies is not at all what I wanted from this show. Does it get better? I loved it when they were learning to trust each other and becoming friends, but this is breaking my sappy little heart. Someone tell me they end up on the same side again!

My computer died on me last weekend and took my entire itunes library, all my bookmarks and everything I've written for the last six months with it, as well as all the pictures, ebooks and miscellaneous other things I've collected. I had backups of the stories - that I haven't updated since just after Christmas - but everything else is currently a loss. To say I'm discouraged would be a serious understatement.
