Questions and answers

RobotStudio®’s new floating company license

1. What is the new license for RobotStudio that ABB Robotics is launching?

Answer: ABB Robotics is launching a new company floating license, which allows any user within an organization to work on RobotStudio on any device using the same license. Previously, the license was locked to one computer, but now multiple team members can share it. This reduces costs as each user no longer needs an individual license.

2.Where and when can I get this new RobotStudio floating license?

Answer: The new floating license is launched on 14th April. From that date, the latest version of RobotStudio can be downloaded from the RobotStudio web page, which activates the new license. A pop-up in the app will also prompt users to upgrade.

3. What are the benefits of downloading the new floating license?

Answer: The new license is more flexible and cost-effective. It can be used across teams, regions, and devices. Subscription options range from 3 months to 5 years. Users also benefit from ongoing upgrades and new features.

4. What happens if you are signed up to an old license?

Answer: You can continue using your existing license until it expires. When upgrading, the old license merges with the new one and retains its expiration date. Contact ABB support if needed.

1. When will the changes to educational licenses take effect?

Answer: The changes will be released at the end of Q2.

2. Will educational licenses still be processed locally in each country?

Answer: No. Applications will be handled via a website available in Q2.

3. When does the license validity start?

Answer: The User-based license starts on the delivery date, which can be set when ordering. In the case of a Node-locked license, the license starts on activation day.

4. Can the activation of a User-based license be delayed?

Answer: Activation cannot be delayed, therefore pay attention to the delivery date when ordering.

5. Is there a limit to the number of users in the cloud license server?

Answer: Multiple licenses can be combined to reach the required number of users.

7. How will reseller/value provider scenarios work?

Answer: A reseller program is under development. More details will be provided.

1. Is internet required permanently for the license?

Answer: Internet is only required for activation. After that, licenses can be checked out to a local device and used offline.

2. What about users working without internet access (e.g., field technicians)?

Answer: Node-locked licenses can still be used and activated completely offline.

3. Can one user share a license across multiple people?

Answer: Only one user can use a license at a time. It must be returned before another user can use it.

4. What happens if the company admin leaves?

Answer: Currently, all company users have equal rights. For school licenses, admin roles can be reassigned.

1. How is cybersecurity handled for enterprise licenses?

Answer: Cybersecurity and GDPR requirements are validated and approved by ABB.

2. Can the license server be hosted locally (offline)?

Answer: No, enterprise licenses are cloud-based. However, node-locked licenses remain available for offline use.

1. How are enterprise floating licenses activated by default?

Answer: Enterprise floating licenses are borrowed by default at the time of purchase.

2. How long are licenses borrowed by default?

Answer: Licenses are borrowed for the full license period by default.

3. How does the transition work for existing node-locked customers who want to move to the new licensing model?

Answer: When a customer installs and runs RobotStudio 2026.x, the system automatically switches to the new licensing framework. Existing node-locked licenses remain node-locked. Switching to a user-based license is handled case by case.

4. How can customers purchase a license?

Answer: Currently via manual request (e.g., RFQ or 'Request License'). In the future, purchase will be available via Robotics One.

5. Do customers need an account to use the new license?

Answer: Yes, users will need an ABB/Robotics One account for user-based licensing.

6. Are short-term licenses (3 or 6 months) available?

Answer: Yes, user-based licenses can range from 3 months up to 5 years.

7. Do customers need to open specific firewall ports to use the license server?

Answer: No. The system uses standard web traffic over port 443, so no special firewall configuration is required.

8. What will happen with licenses bought before the new model but not yet activated?

Answer: They can be used with both systems. It is recommended to activate using RobotStudio 2025 first; when upgrading to 2026, the license will merge for the remaining period.

9. Can the new floating license be used with RobotStudio 25 version?

Answer: No, customers need to download version 26 to use it.
