Info Post: General Information
Doctor Martel Selik Lichtenstein
History: Grandfather (deceased), father (deceased), mother (deceased), younger sister. Born in rural England to German parents, Lichtenstein was brought up far prouder of his German heritage than his English home. His father was a man who was very proud of his education and taught Lich to view knowledge as power, as superiority. He gave Lich a basic education whilst teaching him how to be a doctor as his father taught him. This makes Lich's education less than official, but paired with the books at his disposal and a sharp intellect, it serves him well. Lichtenstein's understanding of the world came mostly from his father who travelled frequently and his grandfather who longed for the world as it had been and all the medical marvel that had existed. This resulted in a him being mostly disgusted at the state of the world, pitying of the uneducated and eager to do something productive to change it.
His youth was fairly unremarkable and he focused on studying. When his grandfather died, his father travelled less so that he could teach his son. When Lich was fourteen he discovered his magic, much to his father's fury. In a family where the science and technology of a previous era were adored, magic was less than welcome. This did little except to strain the father-son relationship which wasn't to last long anyway. Several years later, while the parents were travelling, they died from due to illness. Lich took this surprisingly well and even took it as an opportunity to start travel at the age of eighteen with Germany as his first destination. His sister opted to join him rather than to stay with the family friends they had lived with since the death of their parents.
Lichtenstein continued his education though practice from hereon in. He kept his magic mostly secret to avoid angry mobs and accusations of witchcraft and satanic rituals. This was helped no end by his clear admiration of science and logical thinking. Though his magic need far more practice than his medical skills. After several years of learning the basics and things he felt were essential to aid survival, he started to specialise. Naturally, he focused on the art of healing and the intricate tricks these skills could do. When he was suddenly confronted with a reminder of his own (and his sister's) mortality, he concluded that he should work to find a way to gain immortality. This prompted him to the more sinister studies of the dark arts which he has only been experimenting in for the past two years or so, in between jobs, while trying not to alert any of the extremely superstitious people that inhabit his world.
History Note: Martel Lichtenstein was also the name of his father, so he prefers to go by his middle name. However, he'll only correct those he considers proper friends. It helps serve as a reminder of how well they know him.
Personality/Opinions: Lichtenstein is extremely curious about things. He likes to understand everything. He likes to understand how everything works, and though he disregards more social subjects as being unimportant, this doesn't exclude understanding 'how people work' from his curiosity. His father trained him as a doctor, but he also considers himself to be a scientist. Compared to the commoners he encounters most often who focus on skills, he feels his education grants him a certain amount of superiority which may also partly be a misinterpretation of his rather inept conversational skills.
He doesn't mind other people generally. As long as they're not in large groups. After all, other people are essential, even if only to have as a few allies. However, he's a big believer in "I won't bother you if you don't bother me", mainly when he's on a roll with his experiments. He's used to being private and, after a few years travelling, he's grown suspicious of strangers and used to the idea of not judging a book by its cover. Socialising is nearly painful at times as for most of his life he rarely had to employ empathy and conversations can become quite awkward. However, when he does have to deal with people he tends to treat them as he does everything else: a series of combinations, formulas, actions and reactions. While this sometimes works to help him understand the patterns of the human mind, he's still in the process of trying out all the different combinations on offer.
Lichtenstein doesn't have much in terms of relationships. In fact, he has very, very little. His sister is his most obvious relationship. He's taken on a fatherly role as well as that of an older brother. His overprotective nature is by far his biggest show of compassion. Every so often he's wooed (or attempted to woo) a woman in the town he's passing, but all relationships have died out in the wake of his occupation, scientific curiosity and the need to vanish before the town realises that there's a graverobber in town.
Magic, to Lichtenstein, is an element of the world that simply hasn't been defined by science yet. It has crossed his mind to use science to understand magic, but for the time being he has a more pressing project. He understands that, like any power, whether magic is good or bad depends on the person wielding the magic. He trusts himself, just about, but regards all others with magic suspiciously. Right now, Lichtenstein is relying on magic to help him where science has failed - achieving immortality.
Lichtenstein holds a certain amount of loathing for religion. The 'blame religion for the collapse of the veil between myth and fact' attitude of his family seeped in through his pores and it was impossible not to be immersed in it. He finds it frustrating as he doesn't understand the commitment of the believers, or the history religions offer, and if it's anything he hates it's a question he can't answer.
Skills: He's a doctor (obviously), can read, write, speaks German and English fluently, and knows how to use a pistol (he only has one and even then, a limited number of bullets).
His powers would be an awkward, clunky list. If you want to know if he can do something, then pling me. Basics you will likely see include: Magical shield, fire/heat/light, and, primarily, healing,
Note: This is the mun taking a step back from playing Lich's older self.
