Position Summary:

The Barn Manager is responsible for the acquisition, training, maintenance, health, and welfare of the NCEFT therapy horses. Barn Manager is also responsible for the management of the barn staff/horse handlers and maintaining good communication with therapists and instructors to ensure optimal and effective therapy sessions and lessons for all NCEFT clients. The Barn Manager reports to the Executive Director and supervises Horse Handlers, Barn Staff, and Barn Volunteers.

Direct Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily plan for each NCEFT horse to ensure that all horses are properly fed, groomed, conditioned  and prepared for therapy sessions/lessons
  • Ensures that horse handlers have the appropriate skills and training to meet the horse handling requirements in Hippotherapy, Adaptive Riding, Mental Health and Resilience programs and other NCEFT initiatives. 
  • Maintain a system whereby horse handlers alert the Barn Manager of any soundness and/or behavioral issues.  Keep the Executive Director, Program Director and Mental Health and Resilience Director apprised of any concerns.
  • Oversee the maintenance of health records including vaccinations, worming, medications, dietary requirements, dentals, and shoeing
  • Ensure all tack and equipment being used is appropriate with respect to the well-being of the horse and in good condition.
  • Oversee the barn and arena areas to make sure that an organized, clean and good working environment is maintained at all times.  Coordinate with facilities staff as needed.
  • Ensure NCEFT has the appropriate number of suitable horses through retirement and acquisition.
  • Order hay, grain, supplements, medications and supplies as needed.
  • Manage service providers such as hay provider, veterinarians, farriers and manure removal provider.
  • Closely coordinate with the Program Director and Mental Health and Resilience Director to ensure NCEFT remains in compliance with all relevant industry standards.
  • Manage clinics held at NCEFT.
  • Support NCEFT events throughout the year.
  • Manage NCEFT Stall Renter program and all Stall Renters.
  • Maintain current Emergency Equine Evacuation plan and Emergency Procedures
  • Provides supervision and oversight of all barn staff and volunteers including yearly staff performance evaluations, responsibility for hiring and termination processes. 
  • Participates in annual budget preparation, staffing projections and ongoing monitoring of resources.
  • Adheres to the highest standards of equine environment safety and standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs. from the ground to waist height frequently during a normal workday (hay, grain, feed, tack, etc.).
  • Must be able to walk and stand on uneven surfaces for up to 7 hours/day (lunging, leading, tacking, hand walking, retrieving and returning horses to stalls over a 12-acre facility.
  • Must possess the ability and dexterity to rapidly move toward or away from a full-sized horse to protect the safety of rider, side walker, or therapist.
  • Must be able to frequently twist, stoop, bend, kneel and balance several times per day when working with or around NCEFT horses (grooming, hoof maintenance, tacking, feeding ,etc.).
  • Must be able to jog, without stopping, approximately 150 yards on uneven surface while driving or leading a therapy horse.

Pay Range:

$70,000- $88,000 annually (exempt/salary).
