The Jonathan Stride series follows homicide lieutenant Jonathan Stride, who investigates crimes in and around Duluth, Minnesota, on the coast of Lake Superior. Cab Bolton Series (Books in Order)

The Cab Bolton series features tall and flashy detective Cab Bolton from Naples, who decided to leave his job in law enforcement to become a private investigator in Florida, supported by his actress mother, Tarla Bolton. Unlike the more serious and indifferent Stride, Cab has a sharp sense of humor and a unique style. The Florida setting is exactly opposite in setting to the Duluth winters.

The Frost Easton series follows homicide detective Frost Easton as he investigates crimes in San Francisco. The books mix psychological suspense with police procedural elements, and Brian Freeman uses the fog and terrain of San Francisco in the same way he uses the cold winters of Minnesota in the Jonathan Stride novels.

Brian Freeman is an American psychological suspense author best known for the Jonathan Stride series.

Brian Freeman was born in 1963 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in San Mateo, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area, before moving to Minnesota. He studied English at Carleton College in Minnesota, graduating magna cum laude in 1984.

Before becoming a full-time author, Brian Freeman had several jobs, including in technology, communications, and marketing, working as a director of marketing and public relations at the international law firm Faegre and Benson.

He spent roughly two decades writing unsold manuscripts while working full time before finishing a manuscript he could sell in his early forties. He published his debut novel, Immoral, in 2005, which was the beginning of the Jonathan Stride series set primarily in Duluth, Minnesota. The novel won the Macavity Award for Best First Novel and was a finalist for the Edgar, Dagger, Anthony, and Barry Awards.

In addition to the Jonathan Stride novels, he has written the Cab Bolton, Frost Easton, and Shelby Lake series, along with several standalone thrillers, among which Spilled Blood won the 2013 ITW Thriller Award for Best Hardcover Novel. He was was selected as the official author for the Jason Bourne series, originally created by Robert Ludlum.

Brian Freeman has also published novels under the pen names B.N. Freeman and Ally O’Brien, and his books have been sold in 46 countries and 23 languages. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, with his wife Marcia, who is also his full-time partner in the book business.

  1. Robert Ludlum’s Bourne books whetted my appetite for these high adrenaline spy and espionage books, but Brian Freeman has got me well and truly hooked on the genre. I’m currently reading Freeman’s Bourne Shadow and finding it totally gripping and wanting more.
