The Future Bride: A MacLeod Time-Travel Rom Com (The MacLeod Scottish Time Travel Rom Com Series Book 1) (English Edition)
Outlander meets Leap Year in this lighthearted, time-travel rom com with strong gin and karate.
Twenty-one-year-old Brigid MacDonald spends her days working as a barista at a coffee shop, hanging out with her BFF, Selma, and avoiding the men she usually meets at bars - until she suddenly finds herself in a strange castle, in another time, being dressed for a wedding ceremony she didn't consent to!
Of course, Brigid steals a horse and flees, but the jilted groom and his brothers aren't giving up so easily. Unprepared for life in the wilds of medieval Scotland, Brigid must trust her life to a moody Highlander named Ferghus.
Set amidst the breathtaking landscape of Skye, Brigid soon finds herself caught in a serious feud between rival clans. Will her knowledge of karatedo be enough to save her from ruthless warriors, or must she lower her guard and let someone else into her life?
Accompany Brigid MacDonald - a strong, witty, skilled, and beautiful redhead - on her journey through the Scottish Highlands. This historical romance combines comedy and suspense that will have you both engaged and laughing at the human frailties that transcend time and place.
For adventure. For love. For kilts. (And strong gin.)
Author's Note:
The Future Bride contains tropes of the romance genre, as well as some carefully-chosen historical inaccuracies, to facilitate the plot.
This is the first book in a complete series.

joanne paulson5 van 5 sterrenYou must meet Ferghus. Now, if possible.
Beoordeeld in Canada op 23 april 2022Every night for about 10 days, I couldn’t wait to snuggle into bed early and pick up The Future Bride.
This tale of love and time travel is so much fun, so packed with action, you really want to just devour it whole . . . but work, you know.
Brigid is a barista from contemporary Canada, who for unexplained reasons finds herself running from a potential groom in a Scotland of centuries earlier. Clad only in a wedding gown, she’s madly running through the forest when a massive Scot rescues her (we hope).
Enter Ferghus, with whom it is difficult not to fall in love immediately. Enormous, scarred, handsome, grumpy, hot-tempered, ethical to a fault, suspicious and very hard to understand (at first), he’s a remarkably complex romcom hero and I found myself rooting for him even more than the bride.
She is also an interesting creature, with an unusual skill that confounds Fergus: karate. And let me tell you, that martial art comes in very handy.
As the story unfolds, they find themselves in constant conflict generated in part by the difficulty in understanding each other. One occasionally wants to bang their heads together, really. Yet they are delightful.
The author has taken great pains to give the reader insight into the whole thing. Peppered throughout the book are Scots-Gaelic translations, which at first I thought might be annoying; but after a few pages, I loved this device. Clever and sometimes very funny, they add to the omniscient voice and give the reader that little bit of extra immersion.
I enjoyed The Future Bride immensely. It came up in my reading pile at just the right time, when I needed an escape, and it was the perfect thing, packed with humour and a touch of heat.
If only to meet the redoubtable and sexy Ferghus, it’s a must read.

Beoordeeld in Australië op 2 september 2023Romance, funny and time travel. Brigid is a lovely young lady trying to live her life. But thrown into the 16th is no fun. The characters are well written and grab you from the beginning. A great read

Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 5 juni 2025I have long been forced to listen to Lorraine Kelly and Alex Ferguson without understanding them, so I had no problems with words in this book that I did not understand. The story was delightful and action packed and I enjoyed every page of the adventure. I move happily to book two in the series.

Victoria Skye5 van 5 sterrenA Touch of Magic and a Lot of Heart.
Beoordeeld in Duitsland op 2 november 2025The Future Bride is a fun and charming story that’s easy to enjoy from start to finish. J.G. MacLeod has written a light, engaging romance that mixes time travel, adventure, and just the right amount of humour.
Brigid is a brilliant main character - strong, funny, and relatable. Her reactions to the world she’s suddenly thrown into feel genuine, and her chemistry with Ferghus is sweet and believable. The story moves along nicely, with plenty of heart and a few laugh-out-loud moments.
It’s a perfect read for anyone who enjoys a good escape, a bit of romance, and a heroine who can hold her own. A lovely start to a series I’ll happily continue.

Well Zee5 van 5 sterrenAn inspiring and a pleasurable book to read!
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 8 september 2023I bought this book as I want my TBR to have this kind of genre.
This is a time-travel novel with more emphasis on the romantic encounters of the main characters. From it flows the comparison of the past and the present.
Brigid- the main character of the story coming from the present era is transported into Medieval-time Scotland and is able to meet Ferghus – a son of one of the most powerful families of the era. Through her unexpected time travel, Brigid navigates to a life and time under a patriarchal power. Males are believed to be more important than females. Females are anticipated to be subordinates to males. Power, marriage, and even love are not for any individual to decide but by the head of the family – that is the father or the patriarch of the clan.
However, Brigid is a modern, ‘emancipated’ woman of her time! Independent and very capable – she knows her Kata well. Her time travel in the medieval period is indeed a real challenge!
Two contradicting beliefs of the main characters – one who believes that the patriarchal system is rather a way of life and the other one coming from the current era who understandably cannot fathom the ‘rationality’ of a male-dominated medieval time and women are a little tad higher from working cattle.
Yet, true to its genre, a transformation happened! Truly, love can move mountains!
The author’s narratives have their distinct charm to hold a reader’s attention. For one it is written in the first-person point of view and for another it captures the tension of human nature about manifesting one’s attraction.
It has a lovely, happy ending. Lovers of romance novels would surely love this book. I for one enjoyed the exchanges of banter between the main characters.
A woman’s nature and psyche are really unique and if given the conducive circumstances to flourish, it shall have positive, wonderful, and better blooms as revealed in this book.
An inspiring and pleasurable book to read. Congratulations author JG Macleod!
