This year, the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour celebrates its 30th anniversary. The 1996 Pro Tour Season started on 16 February 1996 with Pro Tour New York, and ended on 18 August 1996 with the conclusion of the 1996 World Championships.

When it was first announced, on December 5, 1995, Pro Tour New York was referred to as being the first event in the Black Lotus Pro Tour. The Black Lotus nomenclature was dropped before the tournament started. The event was not streamed live, but a video was later published by Wizards of the Coast. Michael Loconto ended up the winner, taking down 1994 Worlds finalist Bertrand Lestrée in the final. The top prize was $12,000 for the win, much more than the winners of the earlier major tournaments got, yet a lot less than future Pro Tour winners would earn. Loconto and Lestrée had agreed to split the prize, with both taking home $8,500.

Pro Tour Los Angeles was held on May 3 to 5, 1996 in Los Angeles, California. It was the first to use a Limited format: Fourth Edition and Homelands Booster draft. Booster draft, colloquially known at the time as "Pass the Trash", was a format that many players weren't familiar with. Previous sanctioned limited events mostly were Sealed Deck or Rochester Draft; however, Booster Draft was chosen over the latter for logistical reasons. While Rochester was considered to be the more skill-testing and premier form of draft, Booster drafts were considerably quicker to run. The winner was Shawn "Hammer" Regnier, a former professional arm-wrestler, in his second Top 8 appearance.
