Hi! If you got assigned to me, I'm pretty easy-going about what I like: I like banter and friendship and people being there for each other. I'm not so keen on character bashing, character death, and non-consentual activity, sexual or otherwise. And now, more detail.

Mel wins Sue's heart with baked goods. Paul and Mary are on hand to appraise and critique her efforts. Bonus if Sue keeps wandering in and cluelessly eating the cast-offs. As far as tone goes, think the fluffiest of fluffy bunnies.

Dee and Charlie hook up (feel free to make how they actually choose to hook up as ridiculous as possible). This goes about as well as you would expect. If you enjoy Sunny's particular brand of horrible people coming up with crazy schemes and fully committing to them, here's your chance to go wild.

I'd like something from the early days of Dan and Roseanne's relationship, before the children were born (possibly in the early stages of Roseanne's pregnancy with Becky?). Considering both Roseanne and Dan gave up a lot of their dreams to get by, a bittersweet tone is okay, but no unhappy endings, just two sarcastic kids in love.

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/183698.html.
Joined a gym. The last go-round of this was several years ago and ended badly. Somehow my plan of never exercising consciously after getting out of eighth grade didn't work out for me. Oops.

Speaking as both a movie fan and someone with addiction issues of a sort, I would be remiss if I didn't say something about the loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman last week. I'll try to keep any of the heavy stuff behind a cut.

I watched The Big Lebowski for the first time a ridiculous number of years ago. I was enjoying the film pretty well up until a certain point, detachedly, intellectually, until the scene where the Dude visits the titular Lebowski's house and is greeted by a personal assistant, Brandt, an odiously smarmy sychophant with prep school diction and posture. And I remember thinking to myself at that moment, "Oh! That's Philip Seymour Hoffman! He's good! You and I are set from now on, movie!" It was a moment of pure cinematic joy and every time The Big Lebowski gets mentioned somewhere, I remember that feeling. The Big Lebowski is a great movie, regardless, but I like to think that Philip Seymour Hoffman gave me that moment.

This week has not been good. Generally, when someone famous dies of addiction, there's a mad rush of internet edginess about choices and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and 'getting over it' like a cold and so on, and it never fails to be both infuriatingly simplistic about the nature of addiction and amazingly insensitive. Almost as bad is the notion that addiction somehow fuels creativity. Both of these ideas are harmful and poisonous.

Most every single news story about Hoffman's death mentions how most of the people who were close to him, with the possible exception of his partner, thought he was doing just fine, he seemed happy, he seemed like his regular self. It is possible that Philip Seymour Hoffman's great gift - that amazing acting talent - worked against him at what would be the end of his life. He must have been in an intolerable amount of pain, but he could act like he wasn't, until everything fell apart. That's fucking tragic. It's one of the most tragic things about this goddamn thing.

The other tragic thing is that a 46 year old man who by all accounts deeply loved his family and his friends and his work died much too soon and much too alone.

Rest in peace, Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/182877.html.
A fanmix with a classic Hollywood flavor.

It was too bad that Lifetime made that craptacular biopic with Lindsay Lohan, because the story of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton has unlimited potential. Adultery, alcoholism, epic fights followed by epic making up, the birth of the tabloid press, lunches with royalty, tax exile, living half the year on a damn boat...it's fascinating and ridiculous and tragic and great. Obviously, the marriage didn't last, but they never quite got over each other. Three days before he died, Richard Burton wrote to Elizabeth asking her to take him back, and she kept his letters to her by her bedside until she died.

See? Tragic.

The first half of the mix covers the way the press created the personae of Liz And Dick, and the difficulty they faced in maintaining their private relationship out of the public eye. The second half is about that hard-won privacy, and the flawed, fascinating people behind the personae.

Tracklist:

Marina and the Diamonds - Homewrecker
But deep down all you want is love
The pure kind we all dream of
But we cannot escape the past
So you and I will never last

The Afghan Whigs - Debonair
Feel it now and don't resist
This time the anger's better than the kiss
I must admit when so inclined
I tend to lose it than confront my mind

Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Fish 'n' Chip Paper
Your girl says she's leaving and this time she really means it
You can just look at the pictures, you don't actually have to read it
There's a man in the launderette
And he's looking through your underwear for clues
And the milkman is working through the news of the screws

Depeche Mode - Policy of Truth
It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth

Beyonce - Ego
He got a big ego
Such a huge ego
I love his big ego
It's too much
He walk like this 'cause he can back it up

Matt Nathanson - To The Beat of Our Noisy Hearts
She said, "My love is a fever.
Come on, touch my skin.
They all think I'm easy,
I'm easy, cause I let them win."

The Pipettes - I Love You
But I love you
Oh I love you
And I will love you
'Till the day I die
There will never be a time when we have to say good-bye

The Push Stars - Claire
Lately you've been questioning
my love for you
Well, I've got none for me
and I've got two for you
The two of hearts tattooed on my chest
Etched upon my brain
and though I can't express
In simple phrases what I feel for you
'Cause in a soul of fire
contradictions brew

Neko Case - This Tornado Loves You
Your rails have always outrun mine
So I pick them up and crash them down
In a moment close to now
Cuz I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss
I miss how you'd sigh yourself to sleep

--streaming--
--download--

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/182360.html.
Nancy Drew - Inspired by my recent reading of Mabel Maney's Case of the Good For Nothing Girlfriend, I'd love a story that sticks to the "frocks and luncheons" style of literature, but with a subversive undertone (be it a romantic relationship between Bess and George, or a case that involves dark modern themes). A superficially light and frothy tone, please!

Claudine - I just want Claudine having adventures around Paris or the French countryside, Montigny or elsewhere. Doesn't have to have a complicated plot or heavy romance, just Claudine being sassy.

Father Ted - Maybe the backstory of Father Hackett before his mind went? Or something exploring the father-son dynamic of Ted and Dougal.

The Godfather - I'd like a bittersweet little vignette of Connie and Fredo, with an undertone of them both knowing they are excluded from the family business, and how they deal with that in their different ways.

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/181777.html.
So this month's selection was OTP, and I wanted to do Pete/Gabe because reasons. So, on we go.

Pete Wentz is the formerly former bassist/songwriter for Fall Out Boy. Gabe Saporta is the former bassist/vocalist/songwriter for Midtown and current lead singer of Cobra Starship. Together they fight crime or something. Scene gossip says that the first time Wentz met Saporta, it was in some dive's restroom and Wentz called Saporta Midtown Gabe and offered to let him pee first. It is unknown what Gabe's answer was, but a good bet says that it was either jackassy, lovably rogueish, or somewhere in between, because that's how Gabe rolls. After this possibly apocraphal meeting, the relationship became standard mutual rock and roll feud, which Pete describes as "I hate that fucking guy." However, it turned into sunshine and roses in some other nightclub, after Pete witnessed Gabe dancing with another guy's girlfriend, and fending off the boyfriend in question by whipping out his penis and wiggling it about. Pete has very particular criteria for selecting his friends. The friendship endured through various major life events, including Fall Out Boy getting famous, Pete becoming a media personality, Midtown breaking up, Gabe founding Cobra Starship, Pete getting married, having a child and getting divorced, Cobra Starship landing a major hit with Good Girls Go Bad, Fall Out Boy going on hiatus, Gabe breaking up with his longtime girlfriend and then getting engaged, Fall Out Boy ending their hiatus, and both parties documenting most of their shenanigans over blogs, Twitter and video. The mix starts with mutual distrust and acrimony, moves into the extended lost weekend in which both men nearly lost themselves, and ends with mutual support and unconditional love. This sums it up: Pete got a picture of Gabe tattooed on his leg after Good Girls Go Bad became a hit because he promised Gabe he would, and when Pete and Ashlee Simpson first separated, Gabe got on a plane to go to Japan so that Pete wouldn't be by himself. My eventual wish is that they and their respective significant others buy houses next door to each other and spend the rest of their lives having barbeques and taking the kids to Gymboree together.

1.
A mix about the Corleone family, focusing on the first two Godfather movies and maybe a touch of Mario Puzo's book. Spoilers, obviously, but considering that the book came out in 1969 and the first movie in 1972, I'm not too fussed.

The Godfather series focuses on the Corleones, a Sicilian-American family involved in the Mafia and importing olive oil, in that order. The family patriarch is Vito (his wife, Carmella, is barely mentioned in the films), and he plays a central role in his childrens' lives, even after his death. Vito's love for his family defines him, but the brutal world in which he raises his children exerts its own influence.

Vito Corleone
As a young child, Vito witnesses the murder of his family by the local Mafia cheftain. He escapes to New York City in 1901 and somehow manages to grow to manhood, marry and have children. In order to provide for his family, Vito becomes involved in burglaries and gun-running. After the reigning neighborhood criminal, Don Fanucci, threatens to ruin Vito's family unless he is paid off, Vito murders him. The murder of the blackmailing, controling hood means that Vito becomes a respected figure in the community, and paves the way for him to become one of the most powerful heads of the Five Families. Vito retires from the Mafia after a failed assassination attempt, appoints his youngest son, Michael, as the new Don, and dies playing with his grandson at the family compound.

The Gaslight Anthem - God's Gonna Cut You Down
Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light

Patterson Hood - Granddaddy
But I ain't taking chances on my fate
Gonna bounce you on my knees just in case
Someday if I burn out or fade away
Just like everything else in my life I'll be running late

Santino 'Sonny' Corleone
Sonny, as the oldest Corleone son, is next in line to become the Don and head of the family, but his temper and recklessness doom him. After his sister is brutally beaten by her husband, Carlo Rizi, Sonny nearly kills the man; as retribution, Carlo sets Sonny up to be murdered by a rival family. His body is next-to-unrecognizable; in the funeral home Vito weeps over his oldest son's body, saying, "Look how they massacred my boy."

Roger Alan Wade - Wreckless Kind
'Til this world melts into the sun
I will you cherish, my darling one
But you know I ain't never gonna walk no line
It ain't the way I'm designed,
I's born the wreckless kind

Ryan Adams - Shakedown on 9th Street
Head on down to 9th street gal
Lets go out kicking with the boys and the gals
Wear your dress and bring my ring
Someone's gonna get it aint gonna be me

Tom Hagen
Tom Hagen lost his parents at an early age. His childhood friend Sonny Corleone found out and took him in, demanding that his father take care of the boy. Vito adopted Hagen, but counseled him to never give up his family name out of respect for his parents. Hagen grew to manhood and became the Corleone family consigliere, acting as counselor in matters both personal and legal. Hagen is probably the most devoted to Vito.

The Cranberries - Ode to my Family
My mother, my mother,
She hold me, she hold me, when I was out there.
My father, my father,
He liked me, oh, he liked me.

Sonic Youth - Protect Me You
Protect me demons
That come at night
I don't know what they say
They're whispering over

Frederico 'Fredo' Corleone
Fredo is a classic example of middle child syndrome. Without Sonny's charisma or Michael's cunning, he is constantly passed over in his family, given trifling jobs and disrespected. His resentment and longing for respect lead him to betray his brother, and his carelessness leads Michael to figure out the betrayal. Unable to forgive, Michael orders the murder of his older brother.

The National - Afraid of Anyone
I defend my family with my orange umbrella
I'm afraid of everyone, I'm afraid of everyone
With my shiny new star spangled tennis shoes
I'm afraid of everyone, I'm afraid of everyone

Taking Back Sunday - There's No 'I' in Team
Everything I know about breaking hearts
I learned from you, it's true
I've never done it with the style and grace you have
But I've made long term plans
based on these mistakes

Constanzia 'Connie' Corleone
Connie is a pawn in the Corleone family, at least in the first two movies. Because she is a woman, she is excluded from the family business; to be a good Italian girl, she is required to get married and have children. She marries Carlo Rizzi, but he is a complete flaming asshole. When he is not given a high position in the family, he takes his frustrations out on Connie, cheating on her and beating her while she is pregnant. He also, unbeknownst to her, arranges for her older brother Sonny to be killed. Later, when Michael discovers that Carlo set up Sonny, he orders Carlo's murder (Michael arranges for a fuckton of murders). Connie suspects that her brother killed her husband but has no proof; in the second movie, she goes through a period of rebellion, sleeping around and all-but abandoning her children, until she once again returns to the family, ready to be a proper Italian matron. In the third movie she basically becomes Lady Macbeth, but that's outside the scope of this mix.

Tears for Fears - Woman in Chains
Trades her soul as skin and bones
(You better love loving and you better behave)
Sells the only thing she owns
(You better love loving and you better behave)
Woman in chains (the sun and the moon), woman in chains

Juliette and the Licks - I Am My Father's Daughter
When is it the right time
To never do what you've told

Michael Corleone
Michael will go to his grave claiming that the Corleone family is going legitimate. He at first wants nothing to do with the family or its business, enlisting the day after Pearl Harbor against his father's wishes and getting involved with a nice WASP girl, Kay Adams. But when his father is shot and nearly killed, Michael assumes responsibility for the family. He gets revenge on the men who nearly killed his father, escapes to Italy and returns after three years (after getting married and seeing his wife blown up by rival gangsters) in order to take over his father's role as Don. Michael constantly says that he is going to turn the Corleone family respectable, but he has been corrupted by the Mafia and is unable to escape.

The Gaslight Anthem - Keepsake
Free at last from this shadow that hangs
Surely you wonder sometimes
And I'm sure you all sympathize
Just what a man's to become, just like his daddy's done
I just want to love someone
Who has the same blood

Patterson Hood - Rising Son
If anybody crossed my path, I'd cut them down to size
self-righteousness and forward flow moved me to the prize
I stayed out drinking every night, toasting to the sunrise
I'm my Daddy's rising son, won't he be suprised

--streaming--
--download--

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/177946.html.
A mix about the rivers of the Greek Underworld.

The Greek Underworld contains five main rivers: the Styx, the Phlegethon, the Acheron, the Cocytus, and the Lethe. The rivers represent the crossing from one world to another, and the emotions associated with death. The Styx is known as the river of hatred, and the river that the Greek gods were bound to. The Phlegethon is the river of fire which most resembles the Christian idea of Hell. The Acheron is the river of pain, and also the river where Charon ferries souls into Hades (those who were neutral in life sit and wait on the banks). Cocytus is the river of wailing (here interpreted as lamentation). The Lethe is the river of forgetting and oblivion.

The Styx

Vienna Teng - Passage
I died in a car crash two days ago
Was unrecognizable
When they pulled me from the gears
No one's fault, no one's bottle
No one's teenage pride or throttle
Our innocence is all the worse for fears

Recoil - Red River Cargo
So glad I'm here

The Phlegethon

Apocalyptica - Life Burns!
We have no sympathy for the lost souls
We've chosen the path of disgrace
We give this life to our children
And teach them to hate this place

Patterson Hood - Fire
Smells like something's burning, it smelt that way before
Something's always flaming in this neighborhood I'm sure.
So this was my first time participating in Yuletide, and it was mildly terrifying, but I think I enjoyed it. How do people manage to write epics for Yuletide, anyway? I needed a break after 500 words.

Anyway, so I wrote The New Penzance Postmark, which is a Moonrise Kingdom epistolary story between Sam and Suzy, and Degenerate Beauty Queens, which is a pastiche of Lana Del Rey's This Is What Makes Us Girls. Wanted the Lana Del Rey to be longer and involve more songs from the album, but it didn't happen.

Also I now have to wait for amnesty for my h/c bingo, because I suuuuuuck.

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/177520.html.
Yuletide stories that I think you should read!

unravelling, Greek and Roman mythology. Ariadne, Icarus and their parents' mistakes. All the more heartbreaking for its subtlety.

Rex Interfectus Est, Thick of It, Sam/Malcolm. Manages to elicit sympathy for Malcolm Tucker of all people.

Subject: Tiffany?, Candle Cove. Frigging Candle Cove. I had to sleep with the lights on after this.

Evil Went Down to Get It, Kids in the Hall, Simon/Hecubus. Back in the day, Kids in the Hall was my fandom before I knew what fandom was. So if you're anything like me, you will enjoy Simon and Hecubus making time for evil in between furnishing the apartment and grocery shopping.

Los Angelitos, Grim Fandango. Meche reads to Bibi and Pugsy back in the land of the living. If you never played Grim Fandango, you missed out.

Also if you haven't read One Day (Like Any Other), my Black Books gift fic, you're missing out. Just saying.

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/177286.html.
I got a shiny for Yuletide!

One Day (Like Any Other), Black Books. What happens when the central conceit of One Day gets drunkenly taken over by Bernard and Fran and Manny. Set on St. Patrick's Day, as is right and proper.

Happy holidays, everyone.

Crossposted to http://morganya.dreamwidth.org/177121.html.
This little bit of self-indulgence brought to you by realizing I need to get my bingo card sorted. So, exhaustion.

So when Gabe can't sleep and keeps sending texts to Pete moaning and whining about it, Pete takes it upon himself to send Gabe relaxing music, even though he knows in the back of his head Gabe likes falling asleep to the TV rather than his iPod. Also the mix came out being more about Pete's unresolved Gabe feelings than helping Gabe get to sleep, but Gabe has an attack of tact and doesn't mention it.

Go to sleep, stupid
Tracklisting
1.
