<lj:music>A Christmas Story</lj:music>

From now until Christmas I am going to post one picture a day of an ornament that means something to me and why. I hope it will get me back into the habit of writing again and I think it it’s a neat idea and some interesting things can come out. So spread the cheer.

I had some internet problems last night so I am posting yesterday and todays. Since its Christmas I do have more than two ornaments posted. Merry Christmas!

This ornament is one that I like but is also a favorite of my dad’s. My mom got it at a craft show about six years ago. Kathleen and Samantha also got one though Samantha has hers up in Rhode Island. The only difference is in the shades of purple in the hat. I love snowmen and the color purple so for me it’s a no brainers. It’s also one of those unique ornaments that you don’t find on every tree and that make it more special. I love having handmade items on the tree we have some truly special ornaments that way and the stories behind them make them invaluable.

We all love the Muppets in our household. One of he reason skier Kermit and is still on our tree year after year hanging in there even though he is missing pieces. This one reminds me of growing up watching the Muppets sing on their own shoes and specials. I was amused to see them singing with Andrea Botticelli on Jingle Bells. Now if only they would put the old Christmas specials on DVD...

This ornament is from Aggie and Billy and is jointly owned by my sister and I. We both love it and while at the time we go it we certainly both wished that would happen I like to think that now we wouldn’t wish that. At least not most days.

This ornament was a birthday gift from my sister. We both love the angels made by Willow Tree. She got me this one because it’s a familiar position for me to be in reading a book.

Not ornaments but an important part of the family Christmas. My father is a Christmas Carol fanatic. I have seen almost every Christmas Carol version that has been made with him at one point or another. It really is his fandom. So every year Aggie has been getting him carolers from the Christmas Carol. As you can see he has quite the collection and it keeps growing. He is still missing some key pieces. Thought Aggie did mention something about a Dickens village she wants to start him on of she couldn’t find a caroler this year at her usual haunts.

We are spending the day at home because of crummy weather just watching movies and spending the day relaxing. Tomorrow we are going to all the visiting we wanted to do today as long as the weather holds.

Its one of a few that are left in the house because she also gave them away on her presents that year. We have always had a spider web on the tree. It comes from an old legend that my mom always liked to tell us each year as we were putting up the tree. There are several different versions that can e found online but I like the version we were always told about the spider weaving the blanket for the Christ baby.

We got it for him a few years ago. Christmas Story is one of those movies we watch every year. While we do have it on DVD we usually just watch it on TBS on and off during Christmas day. Plus when you press a button on the side it says some of my Dad’s favorite lines. It’s a small silly reminder of something that we all love to share as a family and with all of us and our likes at times that is a hard thing to find.

I am never far from a book <strike>or five</strike>. In the winter I love to curl up with some hot cocoa some cookies and a stack of books and lose myself in a good story. There are also blankets involved and usually the recliner that is now in the man room. I don’t even worry about being interrupted because once I start reading it’s hard to get my attention off the book. This ornament is from my parents and I believe the book mark says 2003 so it is fairly recent compared to some of my choices.

From now until Christmas I am going to post one picture a day of an ornament that means something to me and why. I hope it will get me back into the habit of writing again and I think it it’s a neat idea and some interesting things can come out. Asides from the figure skaters there are angels and people dressed in finery. But the skaters always captured my attention. I remember playing with them before I’d have to sacrifice them to the tree, spinning the figurines through their routines. (Now that I am thinking of it, I played with Christmas things a lot when I was little).

Helen lived just down the road from my grandmother. She was friends with my grandmothers, her husband fished with mom’s dad and both my parents were friends with her kids. Me I simply loved her. Her house was so much fun she had a giant lilac tree next to it, a large caged area of doves, and a rusted old pump in her yard that my mother hated to see me drink out of. So of course it was that much more desirable to me.

This is Kathleen, myself, and Helen most likely Christmas in the late 80’s. Sorry the quality isn’t the best our scanner isn’t working right so it’s a picture of a picture. I went scrounging around in the photo box but this was the one where I looked the oldest. While Helen was only in my life for a short time I remember her and the time I spent with her very well.

As a bonus another item I used to play with at Christmas time.

Sharp eyes might notice it has been moved since the peek I showed of it earlier. This isn’t actually the whole set that I used to play with. When I was 4 I was playing with the nativity early Christmas morning amusing myself until I could open the presents. I accidentally dropped Joseph off a table and down the steps decapitating him and proceeded to hightail it back to bed, where I could possibly have been the cause of the accident, that didn't work. For several years after Joseph had pieces of his head missing until mom found a replacement that fit in with the set. See I told you I did a lot of playing with Christmas minutiae.

You can kinda still see the Maria I painted on it. It was probably an art project in first grade. I was probably trying to make it look like my radio flyer that I had from home but drawing/painting has never been my strong suit. If I was to make it again now I think it would look about the same with just my name having improved. The rest of the white still would be there.

It never failed that until we were in high school if we picked a costume she would be able to make it. I used to love pulling out the thin paper and pinning it to fabric watching it all come together. I still marvel over the fact that all those pieces would come together to form an outfit. Unfortunately some costumes were lent away that have never come back but I still have some in my closet that hopefully I will be able to pass on.

So spread the cheer.

This is one of my dog ornaments. I’ve been collecting them for the past 19 years. I picked this one out of all 18 I have so far because this one I got after a rough year. This was the year I lost both my Grammies within a few months of each other. It was my last year of classes and as I threw myself into work I also saw them getting sicker as the months went on. Often times one would be leaving the hospital and the other one would go in. It was like they knew somehow.

By Christmas I wasn’t in the most joyous mood. It is actually the second hardest one I can remember having but the small puppy ornament did make me smile.

Because I won’t have internet access tomorrow I will leave you with another ornament.

This one was a gift for my 2nd Christmas. My Aunt Mary G had it made for me. It goes on the bottom of the tree every year because it’s so big. I think it was made by a friend of hers. I love this ornament because it’s unique. We defiantly don’t have anything else like it on the tree. It also has an adorable picture of me in it so that counts to.

Just something small that says someone thought of me during the year.

So in honor of a sweet thought I leave you with short and sweet.

Like the angels we have a box full of snowmen, nutcrackers, angels, bells and other Christmas items. We don’t always put them on the tree anymore, our collections of other ornaments don’t leave much room but we always take them out and look at them.

I remember when I was young and before we started collecting hallmark ornaments the way we do now. These were the ornaments I would hang on the tree. They weren’t breakable like the fragile balls and glass figurines that mostly filled the tree in those years.

Now that I am older though I can see the snowman looks a little demented with his pipe but maybe its just the camera angle.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Maine. We used to rent a house up near the light from one of my parent's co-worker and would spend 1 week a summer up there. We'd go to Pemaquid at least once during that week but usually we would go at least 2 or 3 times and explore the rocks. I'd do the mesueam inside every year and I loved looking at the old pictures and news paper articles about the light and the surrounding area. We could even climb up to the top of the light and cover a certain area to make the light flash.

This lighthouse is so iconic to me I can even freak out people by recognizing it in random places. When we went to California to visit Patty and Alan soon after Sophia was born I picked up a statue in a store and said look its Pemaquid. Patty took it saying I couldn't know that and fell silent when turning it over saw that yes it was.

Also for Christmas one year Cheryl had a painting made for me of the light. The artist put his own spin on it and its beautiful. However I opened at the house side not the tower side and went Pemaquid! She was stunned I got it to.

Also Pemaquid is the lighthouse pictured on the back to the Maine state quarter. And you can take that to the bank.

Now back to finishing up my final before I submit it tonight. I am sick of looking at it! I just hope its done right. And if not perfect at least I pull through with a B for the class.

My mom bought it a years ago with one of her co-workers as buying them. I loved this doll and many years after Christmas my mom couldn’t find it because I had hidden her in my room to play with. It was a game how long until she finally would back her away for another year when the process would repeat itself. Now though after the holidays she gets packed up with the rest of the tree. Maybe I should play the game for old's time sake.

They were made by my Gram M. She was always making things for us even when she was sick and I treasure them all. We have enough that they go on a separate tree in the living room.

This is different from my other picks because there was no decision made as to what one I would take from the box. They are all special so I took the one on the top.

So as a bonus here is the grandparent’s tree. The tree and angel topper were my mom’s parents and the ornaments from my dad’s mom.

There is a story coming up about the nativity scene you can somewhat see in the picture. So Viola! She made an ornament that has been on our tree every year since my sister was in high school. Even though we do have "real" ornaments with her name on them now.

Samantha has since gotten married and moved away but she is still a part of our Christmas her stocking is hanging on our banister as I type. At the time he was one of the first residents at a new group home near my Church. I clicked with him and Mickey (another resident). In what I believe is a huge testament to how I raised both Jaime and Mickey were just my friends. Yes they were both profoundly disabled but when I looked at them that was not what I saw.

I credit this to my mom and my dad who started out his career as a teacher for the blind. As a side note I also have very clear memories of playing with a Braille book he had trying to teach myself how to read it. It did have both Braille and the written words underneath that. I didn’t really succeed though.

The first Christmas in the group home (Dec '89 if I remember correctly) I arranged with other close friends of the group home to do a gift swap with Jaime. I’m sure that couple played a big part in picking out this ornament and the gift that came with it but in my mind it will always be from Jaime.

This was a hard Christmas for me because it was the year I really understood that kids could get sick and not get better. While Jaime is in another home now for adults Mickey spent Christmas at the main center where she passed away a few months later. However, she gave me something as well my Confirmation name Michelle.

I think my parents bought it but I am not completely sure. When I was little before I really understood about what it signified I loved hanging it up because it had Winnie the Pooh on it. Later when I did understand I still loved making sure it was on the tree.

We don’t put many balls up on the tree.
