...it is the one part that is going to cause me trouble.

Okay, working through as much of my fandom list as I can for the time I have to do this:

Just Act Normal by Zosofi
If someone had told Stiles back in high school that he would be an Oscar winning actor by the time he turned 25, he would’ve probably told Scott to punch them. The thing is, though…they would’ve been right.
Which makes returning to Beacon Hills, center of all that is supernatural and better left avoided, all the more awkward.

It's the kind of non-AU I like the best, it has pining and UST in bucketloads, it has so many secrets being hidden, so many. I read it without having a freaking clue what Teen Wolf was and I loved it; canon knowledge just made it even better.

Now I can't do just one for Avengers. Deal with it.

Team Building Activities by valtyr
Fury's a beautiful princess. Clint's plotting a Communist revolution. Rhodey's not sexy. Wall-E's not a documentary. Clint's not gay but he does give a great blowjob. This fic is not an AU.

I can't believe how long it took me to start reading this fic. The summary is 100% apt and 100% offputting all at the same time. It's best to ignore and not-ignore the summary. It is Schrodinger's summary. It is beautiful and I can't count the number of times I read the lapdancing scene and honest-to-goodness blushed.

What Rough Beast by immoral-crow
Steve Rogers, super soldier. It’s amazing really that it takes them all so long to work out just what the serum can do… but given enough time all things become apparent. This is a story about love, and loss; the things we would do to be true to ourselves and true to our hearts; and the prices you must pay to do that.

All the excellent implications of immortality, dialled up to the max. Warnings for character death, extreme angst.

Jurassic Stark by immoral-crow (ALSO MY ENTRY FOR THE JURASSIC PARK FANDOM OKAY)
In a world where DNA has overtaken the atom as the weapon of choice, Tony Stark has decided there is no future for him as a manufacturer of weaponised life-forms. Instead he decides to use biotechnology to amaze and educate the masses. Thus, Jurassic Stark – an amusement park with a difference. Instead of twee rides and tame animals he will wow the public with real-life dinosaurs. What can possibly go wrong?

Well, Steve Rogers could name one or two things. If the storm that trapped his tour in the middle of the park hadn’t been bad enough, it turns out that you really don’t want to make Dr. Banner angry (unless you like T. Rex that is). Oh yeah, and the Velociraptor keeper, who goes by the unusual name of Loki, seems to be both able to communicate with the raptors and intent on taking over the park. Frankly, Stark is a dick who doesn’t think his plans through.

Will the team learn to pull together? Can they defeat Loki and his sinister raptor army? How many hours can the author spend researching dinosaur behaviour instead of writing? If you want the answers to all these questions and more – or if you’ve ever wanted Steve to kick a Velociraptor in the head – then this is the fic for you.

The summary mostly says it all. DINOSAURS AND AVENGERS. It is criminal how few kudos this has.

See, this is why I got to pick three fics for one fandom, because this is one fic that works for three fandoms \o/

The Ties That Bind Job by telaryn & CatKing_Catkin
Called out on Kung Fu Monkey (http://kfmonkey.blogspot.com/2012/08/leverage-501-very-big-bird-job-post-game.html) and responsible for hundreds of thousands of words of follow-up fic - this is the epic that started it all!

While investigating a drug ring in South Boston, Angel and Faith cross paths with the Leverage team. Mistaken identities and shared pasts lead to both sides teaming up to take down the bad guys. Along the way, the team learns about vampires, and the Eliot!Whump escalates well into the red zone.

If you're a fan of any of these fandoms and you haven't started this universe, book an afternoon and get started because you won't be able to stop reading. Trust me.

I say Leverage but it also references a hundred other beautiful fandoms. There are time loops and dinosaurs and it is just brilliant.

No one suspects Arthur. He's too practical, too organized, too sensible to believe in the supernatural.
Based on the kink meme prompt: Arthur's real name is Cole Sear.

Definitely one of the fics where I read it and was like WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS. It was tangible anger and jealousy, I can tell you. And the writing is beautiful.

Because paperclipbitch is still in hiding, I have to rec my second favourite Merlin fic.

Nearly everything you would want from a modern Merlin AU. Easily better than the show, alas. It has so many awesome touches. Well worth a couple of hours. ♥

...I still haven't seen The Social Network but I couldn't stop reading. If you ever wanna be jealous over a fic writer's skill, read lc2l (and try not to cry that they're probably younger than you. Yeahhh.)

Dax rolls his eyes. "There's a book?" He winks at her when she shoots him a surprised look. "Relax, I'm not that much of a philistine."
Albie shoulder bumps him and regrets it, because apparently toting kegs up from the basement has made Dax into the solid kind of person that makes bumping into them painful. A fact he knows by the too-amused smirk her levels down at her.

"Nonsense," Talia says. "We have a spare room. Next to Euphy's room, though, so be aware that she—"

Price keeps folding up his clothes, studiously not looking in her direction.

"Clizyati already knows where you are, doesn't he?"

Price's jaw tenses visibly. "Seems like," he allows. Considering his usual loquacious word vomit, Price being quiet is blowing her mind more than the fact that the evil lord of the mirrorworld may not be trapped by the Yellow Emperor's spell anymore.

And if Clizyati is through, how long before the armies of the mirrorworld break through too?

Fanfic:

"I could manage to eat it all, I'm pretty sure," Cora says, eyeballing the spread of food determinedly.

"You'd go pop," Aunt Kharis says, grabbing Cora around the middle and pressing a lipstick-smeared kiss against Cora's cheek. Cora immediately shrieks and pulls away, rubbing furiously at her cheek. She's never been as tactile as the rest of the wolves.

"Be sure to thank Miguel," Eric calls out, still buzzing around the kitchen like a mini tornado, "he's very handy with a knife."

Talia, leading up the rear of the group coming out of the basement, looks proudly across at Derek. "Runs in the family," she says.

The elf and the boo stare at Ely like he's the answer to life, the universe and everything.

That sort of omnipotent power would certainly make Ely's job much easier. He rubs the bridge of his nose and resents his past-self for turning down the cushion Miranda offered him before the meeting began. The wooden seat that had seemed so delightful on first sight is now digging uncomfortably into Ely's thighs. My kingdom for a moment's reprieve, he thinks sadly, and slaps the negotiation table with both palms.

"You're both speaking utter rubbish," Ely says.

Fanfic:

"I'm kinda picturing that right now," Stiles says, tilting his head. "Hi, sir, ma'am, we're here from your local animal clinic to spray liquid in your face."

"I don't think that would entirely help Deaton get more business."

"Couldn't hurt — it's totally Deaton's milkshake that brings all the bored forty-something housewives to your boss's clinic."

"My boss is hot," Scott deadpans. "Plus it's also the only animal clinic in town and the next nearest one is half an hour's drive the other side of Beacon City."

"That reason too," Stiles allows.

"Post for you," Albie calls, sing-song, hovering at the threshold of the door. As usual she's treated to the sight of her father's broad shoulders, hunched over the desk, tense with stress. His gaze seems to be fixated on the computer monitor, but Albie's eyesight is eternally poor, and she can only make out the vague outlines of what looks like a map. She waits a few beats before raising her voice, "Dad."
Joshua Yates had never been particularly fast at anything, but the speed he shuts down the window he's looking at is so fast that Albie would suspect he was watching porn if a) she hadn't caught the glimpse of the countour lines of a map, and no map Albie's seen has been NSFW material and b) if she ever liked to think of sex and her parents in the same sentence, which no, she did not. He doesn't even bother properly turning to face her, even though his chair is one of those wheeled, rotatable office variety chairs.

Fanfic:

"You could have just said he was your boyfriend," Malia says. "I'm not that desperate."
Stiles isn't entirely to blame for the way the Jeep swerves a little bit. Lydia turns a snicker into a cough that she muffles into her hand.
"There's lots of other cute boys in Beacon Hills," Malia carries on. "Besides," she adds, eyeing Kira sideways, "I might be into girls now."

Original:

"I kind of want to eat it with my hands," Flip said, eyeballing the spoon in his hands like it will somehow magically stab him if he puts it down.

Mal froze in the middle of reaching for a fork. She turned and contemplated the dessert, and contemplated Flip, and then she looked around at all the frozen courtiers and dancers and servants, and then she pointedly looked back at Flip. The message was vaguely unclear: it was either who was going to know? or Who is going to stop you?

Flip understood, his slow smile shy and brilliant like the sun, and Mal's chest quivered oddly when he put the cutlery down and reached his hand into the bowl of cream, fruit and meringue. It felt so odd that she had to look away for a moment and count her breaths, and when she managed to turn back, Flip had cream all over his face and was looking mournfully at his messy hand.

Fanfic:

Well, Derek did trip on the trail of troll slime, which might have made him stumble forwards, but he's fifty-three percent sure that it's Stiles' fault. Maybe fifty-two. He could concede that fifty-one was an acceptable number.

Stiles makes an ungainly sound as Derek sucks a vicious kiss into Stiles' jawline, before Derek lifts his head to chase that sound. Stiles kisses him back helplessly, clinging onto Derek's back like he'll fall over if he doesn't.

Well, it is Stiles. It's not impossible.

"It's amazing what little power we have as teachers." Mr. Murphy sat down on the edge of his desk and looked at them all, a much more solemn expression on his face. "There's nothing I could do to stop those boys doing what they were doing -- their father owns half the town, I'd lose my job. But if it were other kids stopping him..."

"So you kept giving us DTs just to make sure we had uninterrupted planning time," Chase realised.

Mr. Murphy shrugged. "It's nothing you could ever prove."

Fanfic:

Stiles instantly drags Scott out in the dark to try and find it first. They live in England, so of course it's raining. Scott trudges along the pavement, getting his trainers muddy before they've even left the estate.

"Bloody hate the rain," Scott whines. "Couldn't we have driven?"

Mal held the sword out firmly, glaring at him down the length of the blade. "Are you in league with her?"

Flip edged a look at the frozen fairy before looking back at the point of her sword, dangerously near his heart. "Me in league with-- you've gotta be kidding me. And be careful with that thing – do you even know how to use it?"

"I knocked out a couple of goblins naked and unarmed," Mal pointed out. "Whose capacity for violence are we really questioning here?"

Fanfic:

The correlation between new teacher joining Beacon Hills High and new teacher being elbows-deep in the supernatural wasn't rocking a p value of one, but on a scale of as likely as Allison not having a weapon on her to if you date Derek Hale you're going to die, it was much closer to the latter.

Maybe it was on a probability par to if you date Lydia Martin or Derek Hale, you're most likely going to be a killer of some sort.

And yeah, Scott's been hitting his statistics homework a little hard recently, but only because it turns out having your lacrosse coach as your teacher isn't the free ride to an easy A that most people think. It's actually been interesting to see how probability can affect stock price calculations, but when he voiced that out loud, Stiles spat milk out of his nose and started cackling that Scott had been drinking the Kool-aid.

Anyway, while Scott's vaguely sure that the new science teacher Mr. Joblin is sketchy as hell (because who wears stretchy pants to teach in? seriously?), there's more of a potential mystery going on with the new English teacher Ms. Williams.

More specifically: Stiles' weird-ass reaction to her.

It's awesome - a music player with a 60 minute timer, and you can choose your preferred genre (I'm digging the Ambience one at the moment) and it really helps if you're trying to write for an hour uninterrupted to keep you in the zone. There's even a test mix for ADHD peeps which is interesting - I wrote really quickly to it, but that might be more of a rhythm thing!) Anyway, the cinematic mix is rad, and it works not just for writing, but if you're like me and sometimes waste hella time putting together a playlist to write to, this is quicker and helpful. ♥

If you liked Sliders, but wanted to find more about the emotional repercussions of what would have happened had they just slid into one dimension and stayed there, or you like boys and demons and supernatural and disparate characters being forced to work together or you're like me and an addict to all the Australian kid shows of the 90s - Mission Top Secret, The Girl From Tomorrow - go give it a go! I've always wanted a live-action series where the characters each represent an elemental power, and this one is great! Bonus tip for watching: It takes a few episodes to get started, but they're only 25 minutes each. And you can watch them while doing other stuff. Normally I rec stuff which needs you to pay attention - like Leverage you can't really look away or you might miss something - but I happily did house chores while watching it and it was perfect. GIve it a go! You can find most of the episodes on YouTube. :D The fandom's currently tiny - but growing - and the characters are literally shippable in all combinations. Especially the boys but there's some het ships which are super cute too if you're into that. ~~I'm kinda into all the boys/inanimate objects ship too which is better than it sounds~~.)

Belle loved jigsaws — she probably would have been hella amused at Alex practically becoming a walking jigsaw. That thought, out of nowhere and full formed, felt like a stab to the gut, and Alex hovered halfway between the torture device and her sister, completely unsure of which way to go.

Thankfully, Jess was kind of an awesome big sister, and had her back. Sort of. "Go shower, you reek," Jess declared, wrinkling her nose, curving her freckles into an alien constellation.

"Nice to see you too," Alex said, but she headed nimbly for the ensuite shower room, grabbing a towel from the heated rack and a change of clothes before slamming the door behind her.

Fanfic:

"Everyone's a comedian."

"Yeah, well, you weren't around. I had to learn to fill the silences somehow."

Stiles lets out a huff. "Are you saying Boyd's natural talkativeness wasn't enough to compensate?"

"Boyd," Erica says, "has said exactly six words to me since he got here this morning."

Some things on her quickly forming bucket list were more specific. Like teaching Anders how to drive a car without backing it into their bodyguard and breaking Randall's leg in two places. Learning how to make Mama's melt-in-the-mouth macaroons. Holding Beauregarde close as she cried over her first broken heart, because Bo was nearly fifteen, and a broken heart was as inevitable as death.

I'm so sorry, Bo, Astoria thought, shoving her Galindez-black long hair down the back of her shirt so her pursuer couldn't grab it. You'll have to survive a broken heart on your own now.

The car swerves a little, and Sarah has to put a hand out to grab at the dashboard to steady herself. She looks over at her father, trying to convey her disappointment at the almost car crash with just the power of her eyebrows, because she's too tired for much more than that.

Her head pulses a little, a headache edging in on her thoughts. Near accidents are definitely not her favourite way to be jolted out of a decent car nap.

"Sorry," Dad grunts, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "It turns out I can't drive one handed."

Fanfic:

Stiles opens his mouth to try and persuade him, because he is the talker of the group, but Danny points a finger specifically at him. "I said no," Danny says, "and you can't even throw your hot cousin at me this time, Stilinski — I've already got all the eye candy in my life that I need."

Ethan looks sheepishly pleased, and rubs the back of Danny's neck a little; Danny leans unconsciously into the touch. Aiden just rolls his eyes; he's long since given up on Ethan's antics now their Alpha power is gone.

"Wait," Scott says, looking from Danny to Stiles, "cousin?"

Stiles freezes. Aw, shit.

There's a scent of cinnamon and vanilla in the air, a smell which anyone else would say was the aroma of home baking, but his mom's just put a pan of water on the stovetop and filled it with spices.

Scott doesn't think it's necessary, but what does he know: he's just a kid.

The water bubbles, the burner underneath peeking out from beneath the saucepan, like an orange scar that's smiling at him. He scowls back at it. The house doesn't suit a smile today.

His mom flits like a ghost from room to room, a panicked pulse pronounced on her forehead that she normally only wears when Great Aunt Naomi comes to town. It doesn't happen often, and Scott's glad, because her glasses seem to malfunction and only filter through faults. She likes to list Scott's flaws from one to ten, and sometimes back again; she used to be the sole high point of leaving Mom and going back home with Dad.

Nobody likes Great Aunt Naomi, and Scott wears his dislike with a frown, but his mom wears that dislike like a permanent wrinkle.

For a moment, Scott wonders if the bad word he's not allowed to use means that Great Aunt Naomi won't ever be coming back, but he remembers the tight curl of her hair and the sun-kissed color of her skin, and despairs that she's his mom's aunt, that he can't cast her aside into the decay of his dad's lot.

The house smells like home baking, and Scott's stomach rumbles, but the smell is a lie. He's not too upset. It's not like his dad ever baked, and since his mom had to double her shifts to compensate for the floor in her life disappearing, she doesn't have time.

Scott doesn't blame his dad. Not out loud. But he resents the fact that he'll never be able to paint his father's skin in the cold dark colors he deserves, because that would be growing into his father's flaws, and that would be dishonoring his mom to the highest extent that Scott knows how.

The burner smiles at him, its glow edging into red. The social worker's due within the next hour, and his mom is a ghost with a cleaning cloth, flitting from room to room.

"Your mother," his dad said before Scott left in a fog of feeling that smelled like ash and day-old cigarette smoke, "is a great housekeeper," and he smiled like it was a great joke. Scott hoisted his duffel bag higher, gripped onto his junior lacrosse stick, and marched out of Kyle McCall's cold apartment with his unbalanced chin held high, mentally writing the goodbye card.

Thanks for the DNA. No thanks for the way you broke us so even actual home baking can't fill up the cracks. Thanks for the things you gave me, like doubt and fear, that follow us around like a lingering stink. No thanks. Not ever. Not ever.

Scott tries to help his mom, but the vacuum cleaner gets looped around his neck like a noose, so he wriggles free and tries not to pant too loudly, so his mom doesn't know close he nearly came to strangling himself today.

Bad enough on any day, but this day, when the house is full of cinnamon and vanilla and no baked goods? It would be the worst day.

"My good boy," Melissa breathes on seeing the vacuum cleaner, upright and abandoned; she pushes the words warm and wet into the skin of his cheek, and she brings the vacuum to life with a practiced push and twist. She is an excellent housekeeper. She's learned to be quick at it, with a job that eats her time, and a husband that ate her dignity and joy at life a crumb at a time. Scott wants to hold her up like a trophy, as proof his dad's bitter sarcasm is always so completely, comprehensively wrong.

The house is too big really for his mom to cope with on her own, but she is as stubborn and proud as she is beautiful and kind. The world is sceptical and brutal, and his mom wants proof to throw up to the sky: this is what she can do, this is what she has done, she can perform miracles one-handed. She doesn't need a man.

Scott doesn't blame her for wanting proof, although sometimes he dreams of a two-person flat, where footsteps and rain intermingle with the distant sounds of neighbors fighting. There's no proof of what his dad did to them, no scar or wound that the world can see, no ridges or breaks to raise out to those who demand evidence. Kyle McCall broke them on the inside, shattered them from the inside out. Took his own flaws and fashioned them into a weapon, to take them all down with him. It makes sense they would cling for what little proof they could find.

The house smells like baking, and there is nothing being baked. It's all smoke and mirrors and it's all entirely fake, but Scott would pretend in magic and monsters if it meant keeping his mom safe.

Today the social worker comes. Today Scott could be taken away.

There's a possibility they will, his mom says, because she doesn't lie to Scott's face the way his dad did to both of them. I will come home, dad said, I will love you more. Lies and lies and lies. So she'll clean the house and paint it with fake scents, because the world thinks Scott needs a mom and a dad to be happy.

His mom turns off the burner, and the orange smile fades, but the smell of baking lingers behind. The house smells like an American dream. She tips the water away, but the smell lingers behind. Scott's antsy as the stranger with the clipboard comes into the house, and ask them both questions after questions. He answers until his mouth burns dry.

The questions are burning and fire. Does she treat you right. Does her job make her stressed. Does she yell at you. How does that make you feel. Do you feel safe.

Scott speaks the truth because that's the trick his father never learned, and his throat is filled with the smell of home baking, the scent that lingers in the air for the whole time that the social worker stays.

He cries when she leaves, and he doesn't know why.

He cries for the fact that they had to fake the smell of baking to pass as functioning human beings. He cries for the way his mom pulls him in, and the way he feels better, because she quakes like she's sad and he only wants her to smile. He cries for the two-parent family his mom wanted them to be, and the dream that his father ripped in two.

Divorce is worse than any four-letter word.

His mom smells like rosewater, underneath her tiredness. She's tired of cleaning, of painting the house with fake scents, because the world thinks Scott needs a mom and a dad to be happy.

The world is wrong.

His mom makes him happy, but all his dad does is make him sad. If the world wants his life to be neutral, for his mom's smiles and his dad's frowns to cancel each other out into a flat line, then the world itself is wrong.

Scott's seen what flat lines are. A buzz of constant noise, all on a single tone.

A flat line means the heart is dead.

Scott used to think the scars his father gave them, the ones no one could see, were permanent. But maybe they'll fade like the smell of cinnamon and vanilla. They probably won't fade as fast as the smell does.

The notification comes faster than expected; a letter in the post on narrow paper that cuts Scott's finger when he rushes to take it out of the box. His mom kisses the pain away before opening the letter, and Scott braces himself to return the favor, even though he knows if the world is trying to shove back into his father's cold apartment and cold life and cold lies than the world is more wrong than Scott's ready to believe. There are probably no kisses strong enough to pull the pain away from that, but if there was, it's a power Scott will want until his dying day, to be able to soothe the pain from his mother's tense forehead with just the brush of the tips of his fingers, because god knows she deserves it, even though her baking is a lie and the scent is make-believe.

She's still a great housekeeper. In the divorce, she kept the house.

The envelope opens; Scott's paper bloodstain is discarded to the floor in the rush to rip away the band-aid of the envelope's gummed seal. All the air leaves his mom's lungs in a second, and she pulls him from the floor, lifting his feet clean off the air, even though she told him last month you're getting too big for this now.

"You're mine, you're mine," she sings, and Scott's smile burns wider than any stovetop burner could ever mimic.
