Dear Yuletide Writer

Yesss, it's Yuletide! The first section of this letter is lterally copy-and-pasted from last year, because I'm lazy.

In general, I tend to prefer light-hearted stories over angsty or dark ones. I like shippy fluff, but I also like characters who are very bad at saying 'I love you' by using their words, rather than er, just shooting, hacking, or insulting someone, so ... in some of these cases, fluff may be in the eye of the beholder?

RED (movies)
requested character(s): Han Cho Bai
Give me Han being a badass, cold-hearted, hot-tempered assassin with a thing about people stealing his plane. If you're in the mood for something shippy, I'd love to see him (grudgingly and/or enthusiastically) get up, close and personal with Victoria, Frank & Sarah, or any other character(s) you feel inclined to ship him with. If gen is more your cup of tea, I'd love something about his career as a contract killer - 5 times he killed someone with a piece of paper? Taking out an ad and setting up job interviews for his PAs? I'd rather not get anything focused on his career as a spy and/or his subsequent imprisonment after Frank framed him.

The first movie gave us Cooper, the family man with the cute hair, who called Frank 'Grandpa' and who left me convinced the second movie could never be as good as the first one. And then the second movie gave us Han, and I felt proven wrong. I love that Han is not just a contract killer, but ~*~the very best contract killer in the world~*~. (Is there a ranking? A points system?) I love how he completely and utterly loses his cool where Frank is involved. I love that he's badass and grumpy and willing to put personal grievances aside for a greater good. I love that he's down for driving the car while Victoria shoots people.

Feel free to include any other living characters from the movies. Any rating welcome, and definitely also game for PWP.

Yes please: assassinations, Han's car and plane feelings, curtain fic (with or without background assassinations), Han's Frank feelings, canon typical violence, canon typical badassery, Han being a grumpy cat
Rather not: h/c, angst, non con

Samurai Deeper Kyo
requested character(s): Akira, Benitora, Yuya
Aw yeah, Akira! I love that he's proud and headstrong and Cool (except when he isn't) and super passionate about Kyo Being the Best. I love that his first response to Benitora is 'eh *dismissive shrug*' because he immediately pegs to the fact that indifference is the one thing Benitora cannot stand. Well, or because he really does feel 'eh *dismissive shrug*' about Benitora. That seems likely enough, too. I like that, as the series go on, they develop a more ... mutually annoying relationship, with a bickering-BFF kind of vibe.

And then there's Yuya who - look, I know canon does this thing where Kyo insults her all the time (while secretly he loves her) and she acts angry with him lots of the time (while secretly she loves him back) but I loved her interactions with Akira, and I'd have been 100% on board with them as endgame. He admires her, he protects her, he - all right, so he starts with kidnapping her <strike>nobody's perfect!</strike> but he still develops feelings for her during that, and for Akira 'the only one worthy of my loyalty is Kyo', that's pretty exceptional.

I'd love shippy fic for either Akira/Yuya, Akira/Benitora or Akira/Benitora/Yuya. I'm not really interested in Benitora/Yuya on its own (sorry, Tora, I guess 'trying to spy on a woman while she's bathing' somehow counts heavier against you than 'kidnapping' does against Akira?) and if you're writing A/Y or A/B, I'm A-OK with the third wheel being left out of the fic.

Yes Please: Akira losing his cool, Akira not losing his cool, Benitora being a goofball, Yuya being practical, OT3 roadtrip, over the top dramatics with no or low stakes, bounty hunting, curtain-fic-except-not-really-because-I-cannot-picture them-settled-down-and-needing-curtains (but, like, 'which inn shall we stay in tonight?' fic or 'let's buy some supplies here' fic?), Oblivious Idiots in Love
Rather not: angsty pining or angst in general, major character death, that whole thing with Akira not having samurai blood so he can never blah blah blah, a huge focus on Benitora's responsibilities as his dad's heir

The Archangel Protocol Series - Lyda Morehouse
requested character(s): Mouse, Deirdre
Oops, I ship it? Then again, so does Mouse, so hey, at least I'm in <strike>good</strike> bad company? I loved their interactions and Mouse's crush and Page, but as cool as the setting and the plot for this series was, I confess I'm mostly here for something cute and fun (or hot and fun) involving these two and maybe a bit of hacking or pranking or slightly illegal activities. And/or flirtatious banter. And/or cat-and-cat interactions with an undertone of sincere affection/admiration.

I confess this fandom got added a bit last-minute, so this section of the letter is a bit short, sorry.

Yes Please: competence kink, I-love/want-you-even-if-you-put-me-in-jail/I-love/want-you-even-if-you-drive-me-nuts, (over)dramatic declarations of love, humor
Rather Not: (Deirde still having feelings for) Michael (including negative ones; I'd rather just have the story set either before he happened, or at a point where Deirdre's over him), major character death, no-means-yes (if they do anything more than talk, I'd like Deirdre to explicitly be okay with that)

Burnt (2015)
requested character(s): Adam, Reece, Tony
Reece discovers Adam has not, in fact, left Tony alone and decides that drastic action is called for, and possibly a cook-off, or whatever it is chefs do when they hit the 'pistols at dawn, SIR!' stage of a relationship. Or something completely different. Something completely different works, too.

That first paragraph notwithstanding (or is it?), Tony was my favorite character in this movie, and I would love something where someone's world revolves around him, be it Reece or Adam or both of them. (Adam discovers Tony and Reece are in a relationship and has to deal with that? Reece makes a play for Tony in a professional capacity but gets misunderstood and realizes that he really doesn't trust anyone else to make Tony happy, so why not? Tony ends up with two boyfriends, zero fucks to give about what anyone else is thinking and all the romance/sex he didn't get while he was younger?)

Feel free to also involve Max or not, as you see fit, as part of the Everyone Loves Tony conspiracy or not, as you wish. (I'm tickled someone nominated him, but I hadn't planned on requesting anything with him, so sorry if this comes across a bit slap-dash.)

Yes Please: romantic hijinks, competitiveness, possessiveness/protectiveness, food being involved in some way even if it's just a mention of someone cooking breakfast
Rather Not: angsty pining, h/c, major character death, rape/non con (dub con and/or use of food as aphrodisiacs A-OK)

This entry was also posted at Dreamwidth.

Finished watching the anime Soul Eater this weekend, which was a lot of fun overall, though in the second half of the series, things felt a bit slow sometimes. (This episode: the heroes sneak into the bad guy's hideout! Proceed to the next episode to see them come face to face with the bad guy! Don't miss the one after that where they'll talk and fight a bit with the bad guy, but if you want to see how that fight ends, you'll need to keep watching for yet two more episodes!)

The soundtrack was pretty awesome, and I feel like I've got the line, "Let's go! Soul Resonance!" (with accompanying background tune) stuck in my memory forever.

Also: my favorite character survived and did not turn evil, which is always a nice bonus.

Also: um, is anyone taking part in smallfandomfest and capable of downloading the spreadsheet of requests as an excel file by any chance?
my favorite Minion actually speaks English

Megamind is still the only movie I've ever seen where misprounouncing a city's name carries near-fatal consequences.

It's also definitely the fluffiest, funniest portrayal of What Happens When the Bad Guy Wins. (Short answer: he has fun for a couple of days, but then ennui sets in and he mopes around, being bored, bored, bored.)

My rewatch of The West Wing has reached the fourth season, and I've realized that I really, really ship Sam and Ainsley, even though it would probably never work out. (Also: Toby/Sam. And maybe Josh/Sam, although that's more a case of 'well, they're old friends and both fun characters, so why not?'.)

It's fun to see the guest stars, though - thus far, I've spotted Gibbs from NCIS, Sarah Ross from RED and Agent Coulson from the MCU. (He's an agent on TWW, too. Of course.) Also: Ian McShane, who I don't think of as any specific character, but just as ... Ian McShane?

My copy of Connie Willis's latest novel Crosstalk arrived some days ago. Looking forwards to reading it, although it might be another couple of months.

This entry was also posted at Dreamwidth.

dancing the stray dog strut

Tinkered with Tumblr for a bit, which seems good for finding stuff, but less good for actually talking to people? I like that you can follow searches/tags, though, because it means you can just, well, do that, instead of hunting down people who might post about that one fandom you share, but are more likely to post about the two dozen you don't.

(On the other hand, the 'I don't know this fandom, but X mentioned it and it sounds pretty cool' feels like more of a feature than a bug on DW/LJ? So ... I don't know.)

I watched Pride and Prejudice and Zombies this weekend, which was possibly a mistake because I don't like either zombie movies or Jane Austen novels. (Um. I tried Northanger Abbey once, years and years ago, but it wasn't my thing and I never tried again, after) but it had Douglas Booth in it, whom I wanted to see in something else after Jupiter Ascending (as one does?) and, well, he was in this?

The zombies left me only a little bit afraid to leave the house while it's still dark out, so that was good. The romance didn't work for me, which was less good. It's just - the first time Mr. Darcy proposes, Liz turns him down because he's an arrogant jerk. We've seen him be an arrogant jerk. We've been shown or told about some of his actions that indicate that he's an arrogant jerk. So Liz turning him down demonstrated her sense and sensibility, and I was on board with that.

But then the second time, instead of Liz going 'well, I thought you were an arrogant jerk, but now that I've gotten to know you better, I realize that you're not', Liz goes 'I was actually totally in love with you from the first time I saw you'. Which sort of made me feel old and a little angry. I ... guess I don't believe in love at first sight anymore? (Lust at first sight, sure, but not 'let's get married!' love at first sight.)

So now I'm comforting myself with Georgette Heyer's The Grand Sophy and a rewatch of The Man From UNCLE (movie). (Well, Illya and Napoleon have something at first sight, anyway. Although it's really the Gaby-Illya that gets me every time.)

This entry was also posted at Dreamwidth.

working five to nine (just kidding, it's not that bad ... yet)

RL has been a bit crazy these past <strike>days</strike> <strike>weeks</strike> months, so my spare time's been a bit limited.

It seemed a good time to fully move to DW, although I may reconsider that within the next 30 days, like the indecisive person that I am.

Fandom-wise, I watched the first few episodes of the Nikita reboot, which I enjoyed for Maggie Q being badass and sexy. It's not enough to make me sure I want to get the rest of the series (I'm ... not really into shows where everything is Serious Business, Drama and Tragic Pasts) but we'll see.

Manga-wise, I treated myself to a reread of Ouran High School Host Club, which is still one of the most sheer fun manga I own. (This reread will be my first time reading the final volume. Ahem. Excitement mixed with 'but then it will really be over and I will not get to read new Ouran stuff ever again'?)

Bookwise, I'm wrapping up my reread of Jack McDevitt's Priscilla Hutchins series, which ... well, I really like that this is SF without any military aspect. It's strictly archaeology in space, exploring alien planets and civilizations and dealing with the bureaucracy/mundane stuff that comes with having a whole universe to explore.

And then something goes really, really wrong and we're suddenly in a slasher or disaster movie, and it's kind of cool and exciting, but also hey, I sort of liked that character and now they're dead?

And then we get to a planet where everyone's sort of polyamorous, except also 100% straight, and I'm ... a bit puzzled and wondering if the author's really that oblivious (it's less a statement of everyone being 100% straight and more a statement of 'these people have multiple sexual partners! and orgies sponsored by the local Philosophy Society!' and then only ever meeting guys appreciative of girls, and girls appreciative of guys). I like some other bits of these books, but ... this just feels weird and a little uncomfortable. (One throwaway line would have been enough! One! I'm easy!)

... Okay, maybe that bit bothered me a bit more than I thought, and I'm not actually that easy.

This entry was also posted at Dreamwidth.
