Where I've Been, Where I'm Going

As I'm sure very few of you have noticed, I have found myself trickling further and further away from livejournal. There's not a specific reason, but it's happening.

I started a new job last month, and that's eaten into my free time quite a bit. But I always used to be able to fit lj and icon making into a full-time job/full-time school schedule, and I'm not anymore. A lot of my focus has gone into working on my blog lately, and I find myself having a lot of fun there. It's a different atmosphere than livejournal, and I think it's a change that is good for me.

I'm not planning on abandoning livejournal completely, I still check it every so often, but I don't find myself drastically missing it. My paid account and extra icons expired yesterday, and I don't plan on renewing them... the first time in many years that I won't have a paid account. I may start to crosspost my blog posts here, just for a little bit more of a spread, but don't expect a ton of personal posts again, anytime soon.

I will be posting the last icons I made before I stopped, at some point this week. I may eventually go back to icon making, however I make no promises.

So I seem to have started a new blog, for things that don't really fit in with what I use livejournal for. Right now there's just an introduction post, but I have another ramble ready to go, and a ton of topics that I'd like to ramble about. If anyone is interested it's at http://mirnell.wordpress.com

I'm always up for suggestions of things to talk about, and anything I post there isn't something that I expect to stay private, which is part of what makes it different from livejournal, since most of my personal posts here are friends-locked.

Doctor Who, Theatre, Life

I promised I would try to use this for things other than just posting icons, which means actually remembering to type thoughts and such up once in a while.

I posted about my Comptia A+ test last week, so here's been life since then. I'm starting to prepare for the second half of the certification, and I'm really hoping to take it before the end of June, although I think that might be a little soon. The first week of July might be a more reasonable goal.

On Wednesday, I made the trek into New York City for the DWNY pub meet and to see a show with mashfanficchick. I got on the train painfully early in the morning, which is weird enough. But the stranger thing was the total lack of tourists. I'm so used to weekend trains, and the insanity of people who have no clue what they're doing. This time it was primarily businessmen, and the train was so quiet it was bizarre. Not bad, just odd. And it was one of the super express trains. So rather than taking an hour and a half to get to Manhattan, it took just under an hour. Once I was in the city, I hurried up to 52nd Street, to wait in line for student rush tickets to Catch Me If You Can. It's been ages since I did rush tickets, and I had no idea what the crowd would be like, especially since it was only three days after the Tony Awards. But I got to the theatre at about 8:30am (the box office opened at 10am), and I was the only person in line for about twenty minutes. I almost wandered off to get coffee at one point, but as I was about to, two more people showed up, so I stayed put. We ended up with tickets in row O for $27 apiece. Not bad for a Broadway musical anymore!

Anyway, after picking up the tickets, we wandered around for a bit, grabbed lunch, stopped at the comic store so I could get the new issue of the Doctor Who comic, and made our way back to the theatre.

And the show was absolutely fantastic! It's a little front heavy, lots of big numbers in Act One, less in Act Two, but I really enjoyed it. It's big and showy, but that's how it needs to be. And there's a song in Act Two that's gorgeously heartbreaking. The problem is that it's followed by the song that a friend played for me back in March, and I've been unable to stop thinking about since then. As stunning as it was then, it's SO much better in the show. It's basically been running through my head nonstop since I heard it.

After the show, we joined the crowd waiting at the stage door, which I don't always do. But this time, I really wanted a chance to tell the cast how much I had enjoyed their performances. And since I'm also restarting my Broadway poster collection, I figured why not get it signed too? Aaron Tveit didn't come out to the stage door after the show, which was perfectly understandable, but almost everyone else did, including Norbert Leo Butz. I'm planning on seeing the show again, so I might bring the poster back with me on the chance that I can get Aaron's autograph then, but I'm perfectly happy with it as it is anyway.

We started to head down to the Village then, since I was planning on meeting up with some friends before the pub meet started. But since the subway decided not to behave itself, we just met up at the pub instead. This was the first DWNY pub meet I'd actually made it to. I usually have classes on Wednesday nights, so I could never make it up to New York. But it was so much fun! Lots of people, lots of discussion, and I met some wonderful new friends. While talking to someone about a totally different subject, I was incredibly amused to discover that people thought I was a lesbian, and were completely stunned to discover that I am actually asexual. I eventually realised that I did actually need to leave, since I not only had a train ride, but I had to be awake enough to drive home from the train station. But so worth going!

I’m going to skip talking about all the family shit that happened over that weekend, because, well, if you know my family, you’ll understand without me having to say anything, and if you don’t, feel lucky.

I did go down to Wizard World Philadelphia on Saturday. I hadn’t entirely been planning on it, but I had a few friends planning on being there, so I figured why not. There really weren’t any guests that I was desperate to see, so it really was just to hang out with friends. I did wear my Connor Temple costume, and despite it being painfully hot and humid both outside and in the line waiting to get in, once I got into the dealer’s area, the air conditioning was blasting, so it wasn’t so bad. And someone recognised who I was supposed to be! While I was waiting for the rest of the group, a random guy came up to me to tell me that he loved my costume, and could he please take my picture? It totally made it worth going! After a few hours, the crowds started to make it hard for me to keep enjoying myself, so I decided to bail early and head home. Which was a good idea, since I fell asleep almost as soon as I sat down, and woke up two hours later. Dealing with the constant crush of people wiped me out more than I had realised.

Anyway, nothing super exciting happened again until Wednesday. I’d gotten tickets for mashfanficchick and I to see Next to Normal in Philadelphia Wednesday night. Just cheap seats, the last row in the theatre, in fact, but they were $20 each, so it was worth it. I already knew the music, but I’d never had the chance to see the show before. I kind of knew it was going to be rough, but I honestly hadn’t expected it to be as hard to watch as it was. I mean, the show itself was absolutely amazing, but the subject matter and such was difficult. Probably in a different way than a lot of people, but hard. And there will be a separate post about that, because I’ve basically spent the last week thinking about it, and I had a bit of an epiphany on Sunday. I came very close to trying to get student rush tickets on Saturday, but I realised that I had no idea how early people lined up for them, and I didn’t want to get stuck waiting for hours on the sidewalk in possible thunderstorms. But if the show does come back to either Philadelphia or somewhere reasonably close, I do really want to see it again.

And since it’s now been something like a week since I actually started typing this post up, I’m going to stop rambling. I’ll be back shortly with probably another rambling post, but since I haven’t started it yet, it may take a little while.

Computer ramblings

This morning I took the first of my computer certification tests, the Comptia A+ 220-701. It's the first half of the two tests that will get me my full Comptia A+ certification. I honestly think I've been ready to take the test for ages now, but I had to convince myself of that first. So I gave myself a deadline of mid-June to take the first one. And since I've been either out of the state or didn't feel ready, that deadline became June 15. Tomorrow. When I'm planning on being in New York City all day. So therefore, today.

I got myself lost finding the testing center and think I finally made it there by cutting through the service/truck entrance to the office complex. But it worked out, I was on time, even a few minutes early. And then came the test. The first question, I completely blanked on. And the second. So I flagged them to look at later, and moved on. And it got easier. Or I got more confident. Whichever it was, it worked. I was given 90 minutes to finish, and at about 50 minutes I was done. Reviewed, reviewed, and reviewed again. So I submitted my answers.

I needed a 675 out of 900 to pass. And I got an 804!!! First test, done and done! Which means I can get on the train to New York tomorrow with no worries and ready to have fun and celebrate. And start prepping for the second half of the certification. But that can wait until I finish enjoying the feeling of passing the first part.

MediaWest 2011 - Convention Report

Well, it took a little longer than I'd intended, but here is my con report, complete with LOTS of pictures from MediaWest 2011.

Thursday

Despite some stressing just prior to the convention, we did manage to get on the road a few minutes after 4am on Thursday morning. I spent the weekend without my laptop, since the battery had a minor explosion that I only discovered as I was trying to pack the computer as we were about to leave the house. Having the Nook was a workable alternate, although it meant I couldn't work on some things that I had wanted to. Anyway, the drive towards Michigan was fine pretty much until we got to the last stretch of the Ohio Turnpike. When the torrential downpour started. I came very close to just pulling over to the side of the highway and waiting it out, but we were so close to our exit, that I decided to just keep going. The rain eventually let up for a bit, and we picked up some time. And then it started again. And kept doing so for most of the rest of the way. We did eventually make it to the hotel, in remarkably good time, considering the weather. We grabbed dinner at the hotel restaurant, which had just reopened, decorated our door, wandered the halls a little, and I ended up collapsing into bed relatively early.

Friday

Friday dawned still gray, cloudy, cold, and rainy. But it was finally the first official day of the convention. So I picked up my badge, which took FAR less time than any other year, and bummed around the hotel a little before heading into the dealer's room. A few of my favourite dealers weren't there this year, which was rather disappointing. Although good for my wallet. I snagged a few pieces of art right away, before going to my first panel of the weekend, Asexuality and Fandom. And not only was it my first panel of the weekend, but the first panel I had ever moderated at MediaWest, in four years of attendance. It seemed to go pretty well. Not as well as I had wanted, but pretty well nonetheless. I wish more people (including me) could have discussed asexual characters other than Sherlock Holmes, but there was what seemed to be a lack of knowledge about any others, despite an occasional attempt to bring some up. But people seemed to enjoy the discussion, so I'll count it as a success.

After that, we grabbed some food and did some more wandering through the dealer's room. I didn't buy anything, but I did get to talk to some of my friends that I only see once a year. The next panel I went to was the Sherlock Holmes BBC H/C Recs panel. I hadn't intended to go into that one, so I didn't have any recs with me, but I definitely have some new stories that I'm going to look at now. By the end of the panel, the art show was open, so we did some wandering through there, and I started to decide which pieces I wanted to bid on and how high I was willing to go. I didn't put any official bids down, but it was a good place to start.

The next panel I was sitting on was up next, the Benedict Cumberbatch panel. That one was also a lot of fun, as both the panelists and the audience pimped different shows and interviews at each other. I have a ton of new things to watch, if I could remember what they all were. Yeah, I definitely forgot to pull my notebook out to scribble on. Dinner was next on the agenda, and then we did some more hall crawling. I took lots of pictures of the door decorations, and bought a couple of Doctor Who target novels. For $1 apiece, they were more than worth the money I spent. I also picked up a couple of the new Doctor Who novels, not ones I probably would have paid full price for, but again, for $1 each, I'm glad to be two novels closer to a full collection.

Saturday

Saturday was the day of very few panels I wanted to go to. The only Doctor Who panel of the weekend was in the first time slot, so I went to that one, and that was it for Saturday panels. The rest of the day turned into an epic adventure to get ahold of the new Doctor Who episode so that we could watch it, instead of hiding from the internet until we got home. There was great success, and we did eventually get to see it.

Saturday was also the first time I've ever really cosplayed. I think next time, I need to try out the costume in a situation where there's even an off chance that people might recognise who I am. I had one or two people know, but apparently MediaWest doesn't have a lot of Primeval fans in attendance. Which I should have figured out by the complete lack of panels.

By Saturday evening, the lack of any kind of night life was really starting to irritate me. I don't expect the craziness that Gally has, but I did expect SOMETHING. Not two people (counting me) sitting in the lobby talking at 11pm. What convention goes to sleep before midnight? Humph.

Sunday

Sunday was panel day. Of the seven that I was sitting on, five were on Sunday. Therefore, lots of running back and forth. Or so I expected. My first panel, the twitter one, was called "OMG did you RT that?" Not my title. And no one showed up. It was just me and Mandy, who spent twenty minutes sitting five feet away from each other tweeting and retweeting each other. Yep, exciting. I'm aware that MediaWest isn't a big twitter convention, but I expected someone! We finally gave up expecting anyone to show and went into the art show and dealers room for a while. I put a few bids on art, and checked the pieces that I'd bid on yesterday, and then we wandered towards my next panel. Which was on Stephen Fry. This panel had two people sitting on it, including me. So we had 50% more people than the twitter panel. That panel didn't last particularly long either. There's a limit to how long we can sit in a room with no one to discuss the topic with.

We wandered into the Mark Sheppard panel for a while afterwards, but once it turned into a discussion primarily on Supernatural (which I've tried watching but don't really like), we wandered back out.

My next panel was a surprise success. I'd sat on a Fandom and Technology panel at Gally this year, and while it was interesting, it was a little dry for that convention. This time, with a much older crowd, the discussion was a lot more lively. The age difference between me and the other woman on the panel was enough that it really showed the differences between people who grew up with technology and people who may have picked it up later. We talked about ease of access to information, ability to get out information about new conventions, and generally about how it makes the world feel like a smaller place. But we also discussed things like how much harder it is to avoid things like spoilers, especially when things air in different time zones, or on different days.

Following that panel, was the general discussion on the BBC Sherlock series. There had already been lots of Sherlock panels already, but there was still a nice size crowd in the room. The discussion was fun, and somehow managed to still hit on new topics, despite it being the fourth or fifth Sherlock panel in three days.

Then came my last panel of the convention. This time on Top Gear UK. I'd been really looking forward to this one, but fate (or weather) decided to intervene. The county that Lansing is in was put under tornado warning, so some people decided to leave completely (understandable), and the rest of the panel decided to shift into the hallway and hold the panel on the floor there. Every couple of minutes someone from the hotel would come by to make sure we knew that there was a possibility of a tornado, as if the fact that we were holding a panel in the hallway, away from the chandelier, wasn't a giveaway. So the panel turned into partially a discussion on Top Gear, partially a discussion on tornados, and partially a discussion on Canadian television. Don't ask, I still don't know how it quite got to that point.

Because the art show was Sunday evening, we didn't have a whole lot of time for dinner. We figured we'd swing by the hotel restuarant and grab some food for take away. Where we were told that the wait (for take away), was over an hour. Honestly? We weren't waiting for a table, just for food! So we gave up, and figured we'd spend a little extra and go across the street to Ponderosa. Which is at least a buffet, so therefore quick. Barrie decided that tornado induced lack of time to eat was a minor emergency, and offered to put the meal on her dad's credit card. So we rushed through dinner, and made it back in time for the start of the art auction. Where we discovered that the start had been delayed an hour due to weather. Oh well. We retrieved our fourth roomate and went back up to the room and tried out my Doctor Who Apples to Apples game for a bit, before heading back down for the actual start of the auction.

Everyone had at least one or two pieces that they were bidding on, and luckily my first piece came up relatively quickly. And I won it! I ultimately didn't win the other piece that I was bidding on, but it went so far beyond what I had wanted to spend, I'm completely okay with it.

I picked up my art before the auction was actually over, since I didn't want to get stuck waiting in the crowd that always gathers right afterwards, dropped it off up in the room, and then did some last minute hall crawling. We ran into a few newly decorated doors, or at least ones we hadn't seen before, and then I decided to go to bed, since I had to drive 650 miles the next day.

Monday

There weren't any panels that I wanted to go to on the last day, so I figured I'd swing by the restaurant and get breakfast so we wouldn't have to stop for lunch as early. And of course the restaurant wasn't accepting credit cards, and I was refusing to eat from the gas station again. So no breakfast. But we ended up getting on the road a little earlier than expected, about 10:30am, instead of closer to noon. And even though we stopped early for food, before even leaving Michigan completely, we still made it back to my house in slightly less than twelve hours.

Tuesday

We grabbed lunch at my favourite Chinese/Japanese restaurant on Tuesday, and then I headed up to the closest Apple Store to deal with my computer battery. Barrie's mom picked her and Maritza up there, and Mandy came with me for my quick battery replacement. I dropped her off at the train station after that, and realised how quiet my house was going to be.

And so ends another year of MediaWest. It felt very quiet this year, and I honestly fear a bit for its continued feasibility. I don't know that I'm going to go back next. Things need to change, and the convention really needs to find a way of either advertising better or just finding new attendees. But it was still fun.
