• mix notes: Okay, so. This is a really cute fic, but wow I did not realize how difficult it was to make a mix for a fic you didn't write! XD I know how I interpreted it, and I sort of knew the ~feel~ I wanted the mix to have, but I have no idea how well it all fits together. I leave it to you guys to decide! The first place where he thought to look was the lake. Going there always filled him with the heady memory of the first time he had met Dean. Tonight, he was going to prove to his people (his father) that he could be king. A lifetime ago, during his father's time, the crown had meant something else. For Dean, tonight, and for the rest of his life, it would mean assuming responsibilities, and carrying them out right. Then he reached up and circled his own fingers around Castiel's wrist, surprised at how easily thumb met fingertip. Castiel's bones could have been hollow like a bird's, he could squeeze and they'd crunch, but they didn't. Castiel was stronger than that. (Dean said his prayers to a non-existent god he didn't believe in, and wished he could be too.)

"We could stay here forever, you know?" he said. The words spilled out of his slack mouth,
tumbling out. "No one would miss us. No one has to know."

So. Three guesses what I have been watching. No, but seriously, though. Adventure Time is weird but I think I like it. I absolutely love, love, love to a ridiculous degree the rule 63 version of it with Fionna and Cake. I would watch the fuck out of that, if it was a real show. I cannot even. I am so onboard with that. Um. Yeah, so. That's it, I guess? I happened to be skimming channels and caught Jim Parsons on an episode of iCarly and I was basically like "Oh. Okay." So I had to icon that, too. Maybe I will make more? The misc. icons are basically me just... doing... stuff. ♪ step 1: coloring original image

Okay, the first thing I did was find a subject. I wanted a person on a light-colored background. So I went to http://www.andrew-garfield.com and found this picture:

Then time to color! Okay, I'm going to sort of speed through this part, because all that really matters is the end product. First I copied the background about four times and set the first two layers to Multiply at 100%, the third to Screen at about 10% opacity, and the top one at Soft Light at 40% opacity. That makes it darker and the colors deeper.

Then I brightened it up with a curves layer (160>>206), and then upped the Saturation to about 23. Which gives us:

I wanted to add some yellow, and maybe bring out a little more color, too (I chose purple because I like purple with yellow), so I made a new layer with a gradient, #f3c011 to #75527e. (I tried to pull a purple that was just a little lighter than a purple from the picture.) Then I set that to Soft Light 100% opacity and masked away a lot of the parts covering his hair and face. That gives us:

Wanted a little darker/deeper color, so I copied a merged layer on top and set it to Multiply at about 70% or so. Then I wanted to brighten it up just a bit, so I made another curves layer (175>>198). And we have our base for the next bit!

♪ step 2: making the outline

Now, it's probably easier to work on a bigger canvas, but I wanted to see what it looked like at final size, so I went ahead and resized it to 100px (height, because we're going to crop it to 100px width later). First, I copied the background and pasted it as a new layer.

I went to Effects>>Edge Effects>>Find All. That gave me:

I set that to Multiply, and moved the layer over a little to the right. As such:

I erased all the parts covering him. Gave me something like this:

Then, because between his body and the outline there are still some noisy bits, I used a layer mask to get rid of that. (I set the group to about 36% opacity at this point.) Here's the mask, and the image after the mask:

♪ step 3: texture

I wanted a yellow background instead of the white, so I went digging through my textures folder and found this texture by paperjunk on DA (tle_lovie69 on LJ). I rotated it and resized it, and wound up with this. I pasted that on top of the picture, moved it around until I found a nice yellow spot I liked, and then set it to darken. (The outline was a little hard to see, so it's darker here just so it'd show up. I set it back down in the next step.) Then I cropped it to 100x100 and wound up with:

Needed to get the yellow off him, and off the white bit between him and the outline, so time for another layer mask! This time I did Hide All instead of Show All, which I think made it easier. This is the mask, and the result:

♪ step 4: finishing touches

Then I copied a merged layer and pasted it on top, setting it to Screen at a little less than 50% opacity.

I copied a merged layer again and sharpened it (just a little bit). That gave me:

I wanted a nice, shiny effect, so I made painted some light blobs on a new layer. I stuck them on a black background so you could see them here. I used Gaussian Blur on the blobs, with a radius of 14, and BAM! Icon.

You can do this for pretty much any picture like this (like this icon I made), and probably tweak it to make it easier. I tried it again, and got an almost exact replica, so hopefully the tutorial should work! I'm not sure I went into enough detail, though, so absolutely ask questions if I have not explained something or said something that didn't make sense. I have the .psd for the replica, that I can upload if someone wants to see it. I have a .psd for the first part (the coloring), but that's so simple I don't think anyone will need it; but, again, I don't really mind sharing.

♪ step 1: prepare a base

Now I started this icon thinking "I want a Sally Sparrow icon!" And then I thought black-and-white-ish, and I had the idea it would say "Don't blink." I'm a beginner maker, so this isn't exactly advice it's just me, but: I tend to just go through pretty screencaps until I find something I like - I mean, sometimes I do have an idea (with this icon), but more of the time I just want a good picture. So! I went hunting for a screen cap. I found this cap from killcolor (which is a fantastic resource) and was really happy with it.

So first, I resized the cap to 300px width. Just to get a look at it. I knew I wanted Sally closer to the middle than to the side, so I cropped a little off the left side. That gave me this.I needed a square for my icon, so I changed the canvas size (Image>>Canvas Size) to 300x300px, with a #000000 background. There were some lines on the cap, so it didn't match exactly, so I just took the smudge brush and smudged them up. (That wasn't really necessary as I'm going to cover them up in a second. But. I just wanted to ensure it'd be a nice, consistent sort of background.)

I wanted to brighten it up, so I went to curves and pulled it up a little.

You can see the difference that makes - a lot brighter. Just what I wanted. There are still some grainy looking lines, and that blue light spot. You could probably use that, but I didn't like it, so I made a new raster layer and took a soft brush and painted over it in black. That gave me this:

♪ step 2: coloring

I didn't do anything else to Sally Sparrow because I already knew that I wanted it red. So I made a new fill layer with #f40b00, and set that to Darken at 100% opacity. I had to play around to get a good color. (If you want a lighter red - like #f9665f, for instance, which is the color I used for the word "BLINK" - then use Multiply instead of Darken. You can use Multiply for the color I chose, too, obviously, but it's a little bit darker.)

That will give us this:

Yep, happy with that, so I resized it to 100x100px. Then I copied a merged layer and pasted it on top. I sharpened that with Adjust>>Sharpen>>Sharpen, but that was too sharp, so I just lowered the opacity of that layer.

♪ step 3: textures

Just the red and black gives a lot of contrast, and I wanted a grungy look. So I found this texture in my folder:

I pasted that as a new layer and set it to Screen. I lowered the opacity a little, too - to about 50%.

It was still a little too much, but I didn't like it lowered further, either. I realized, then, that it was just obscuring Sally Sparrow too much, so I made a new Show All mask layer and painted over her face.

♪ step 3: text

I already knew what I wanted the icon to say ("don't blink") so I just had to find a font. I used League Gothic, which is a great font for big words in all caps like this. I wrote DON'T in white, and BLINK in #f9665f. The text was a little too big to fit on the icon, so I tried making it smaller, or moving it down like that. Luckily, you can see the "BLINK" and Sally Sparrow and know exactly what it says - so even though the top part of "DON'T" isn't visible I think it's still readable. Some people don't like text cut off like that, and maybe I could have scooted it up more so that triangle in the "N" doesn't show, but I really like how it turned out, so. It was worth it to have that bit cut off.

I had to adjust it a little bit to get the words lined up like that, and I set the stroke width to 0. I moved the text under the texture layer, so it would have that grungy look, too. Otherwise, it's too strong. I wanted a faded look, so I selected the text (Selections>>From Vector Object) and then added another Show All mask layer.

Then, I got a white to black gradient, and a really soft brush at about 60% opacity or so and painted over the text. The top was fine, but the bottom stood out too much, so I masked that a little more. I also masked away a little more of the text right over her head, too, just sort of following the curve of her head - that's really, really subtle, though, so you might not be able to tell.

♪ step 4: finishing touches

I added two small light blobs on a new layer on top of the icon. This was because I wanted it to be a little more "cloudy," if that makes sense. I took white with a soft brush about 24px or so, at a mid to low opacity and painted two dots - one on the right side of Sally, and one on the left side, just about level with her eyes. Then I used Gaussian Blur with radius: 13. I left the layer at 100% opacity.

On a black background, the blobs wound up looking like this:

One final thing! Sally is really bright red, so I went to Hue/Saturation/Lightness and pulled the Saturation down to -6. It's a really subtle change, but I think it makes the icon look a tad grungier, fading Sally a little more into the background, and better overall. And we're done!

This is... pretty simple, actually; it's actually just showing you how to make icons similar to this one, so I guess it's only helpful if you're going for this look. Ahh well. Um. I haven't uploaded the .psd because I didn't think anybody would want it, but I could if someone was interested.

So! If you look at my icons you can probably see that my biggest problem - besides my insistence on center crops - is text. I'm awful with text. But! I recently downloaded a new font, Splurge, and it is my favorite of all fonts now. So I wanted to practice some text more, and get an excuse to use that, and try to use some other fonts so I wouldn't oversaturate my work with that one font. XD Ha. Anyway! So here's this. Enjoy!

So my bandwidth has exceeded. I don't know if it's because of hotlinkers or because of the traffic or a combination of both but I just wanted to let people know that a lot of my stuff is gone. I'll probably reupload them when I have the time but that's not anytime soon. I also have a few batches of random fandom icons that I'll be posting along with Mulan icons (and maybe other Disney films). Yup! So just wanted to let you know that I'm not dead yet! Haha! Oki dokies, see you all soon!

PS: I really hate Photobucket so if you know any other image-hosting sites that don't have a bandwidth limit or won't randomly delete your icons PLUS bulk uploading, let me know! I'll probably try imgur and see how that works but if anyone else has any ideas, let me know!

Tutorial: Bright and Simple

Okay, so before I say anything else I will say: I don't have Photoshop. I have Paint Shop Pro (version XI). So while there are brilliant, wonderful tutorials that I have learned a lot from, there are some techniques that I just can't use. So while I'm only a mediocre maker, I always enjoy reading tutorials and learning something, and seeing why makers do what they do. So to sort of help refine my own technique, plus maybe help other PSP users, I decided to make a tutorial (maybe more, if I have good icons). Anyway!

Okay, so after watching season 3 of Parks and Recreation, I knew I wanted to icon Leslie eating waffles - because that is hilarious. XD

♪ step 1: prepare a base
I chose the cap I did for several reasons.

• It was funny, with a clear subject
• The colors were already very nice, with the yellow and blue contrast that I really, really liked.
• I liked the background a lot - the even blue of the hospital wall looks really easy to work with.

I got the cap from this site. So I opened it and took a look. I actually had an idea of what I wanted already, so that decided my cropping. I wanted the big waffle Leslie's nomming on to be sort of the focus, so I tried to get that centered, and I wanted a nice big swatch of blue at the top.

I cropped it in a square, and then resized it down to 100x100px. (I know some people like to work with a bigger canvas, and I do that sometimes, but in this case I wanted to know exactly what it would look like at finished size.) Then, I copied the background and pasted it on top as a new layer. I set that layer to Screen. And we get our base, ta-da!

♪ step 2

Now I wanted to just... ~spruce it up a little. NOTE: one of my biggest problems is over-doing things, so I like to work just a little at a time, slowly sort of build the icon to be what I want. Because of that I use several layers, each making just subtle changes. That's my recommendation, anyway, and it generally works best for me.

So! First, I used a curves layer to add a little bit of contrast. (For a simple explanation of curves, I like this tutorial.)

As you can see, I only did a little, boosting the top-right to add brightness, and pulling the bottom-left down to add contrast. This is a very subtle change, really just to have something to build on.

After that, I added a Hue/Saturation layer. (That's in Layers>>New Adjustment Layer>>Hue/Saturation/Lightness) I pumped the master up to 19. Yellow up to 21 and Blue to 15. I did this because I wanted to really emphasize the yellow and blue parts of the icon, as well as making the whole thing a bit more saturated.

I still wasn't happy with that, especially with her skin tone, which was a little dull. So, I added another Saturation layer and only moved Red up to 15.

Then, to make it pop even more, with lots of lovely contrast, I used a Levels layer. (Layers>>New Adjustment Layer>>Levels)

As you can see, you can make a really big difference just by playing around with the sliders. After those layers, I ended up with this:

♪ step 3

After I had stared at it for awhile, I decided that, considering the effect I wanted later, it was a little too bright. This gets even more subtle. XD Okay. The first thing I wanted to do was make it darker and a little flatter. I wanted to give it a washy, blue-ish feel - like I said, blue and yellow are what I was really striving for. So I just made a new Raster layer and filled it with a color from the icon. (In this case, #b5bde3) That's a nice periwinkle color. I set it to Multiply and just eased the opacity down until I found the effect I liked. I ended up at about 18% opacity.

I started playing around with a few different textures, and I found this texture by motorized* and pasted it as a new layer. I moved it around until I found a spot I liked. A little red in the middle with blue around it: like this. I set that to Screen. But that made the icon way too washed out, so I lowered the opacity to around 46%. And voila.

As you can see, though, that takes away a lot of the pretty yellow. So to fix that, I added a Color Balance level (Layers>>New Adjustment Layer>>Color Balance). Now, these are the numbers I used, but this is really all up to experimentation. My level ended up:

Shadows:
Cyan/Red: +11
Magenta/Green: 0
Yellow/Blue: -13

Midtones:
Cyan/Red: +7
Magenta/Green: 0
Yellow/Blue: -14

Highlights:
Cyan/Red: -5
Magenta/Green: 0
Yellow/Blue: +11

As you can see, I really upped the yellow, with a smidgen of red and then blue and cyan highlights to sort of balance that on - this really fixes a lot, and makes her skin less red. Finally, I add a Brightness/Contrast layer to just barely up the contrast. (Just Contrast: +6).

And I'm really happy with the result! Which is:

As you can see, this is almost exactly like what I had after those saturation levels. But! There is a difference. Like I said, it really helps to experiment. And even though it's subtle, all those levels were needed to get this specific result. I probably could have (should have? XD) left it at the end of step 2, but I was having fun getting it just-so. (You can see the most difference on the right side, I think.)

If you ever do something you really don't like, you can also just delete layers or - if you have to - start over from scratch. (To this end, it's always good to leave your background layer untouched. I sometimes wait to Merge All until the very end, just in case.)

*I had seen it in this tutorial by raiindust and really liked it, so. :3 That's a good tutorial, too, but only for photoshop users.

♪ step 4: textures

Okay, now this was my favorite part. Lovely, fun textures! As I've said all along, my focus was yellow and blue. I decided to use two textures, both by deny1984 (posted to the comm midnight_road.

1. and 2.

First, I pasted texture 1 (the blue one) as a new layer. However, I didn't want Leslie covered, so I applied a layer mask. (Layers>>New Mask Layer>>Show All) Then I used a small, round brush - just the default - and painted over Leslie in black. I didn't bother being precise, and as you can see in my layer palette, it wound up like:

And you see the layer highlighted? Well, since the mask was a bit sloppy and the blue on the icon was too strong (like this), I set that top layer (the one highlighted in the picture) to Soft Light.

Then I pasted the yellow texture as a new layer, and pulled it down to just below Leslie's hands. That one I kept normal, because everything it was covering I wanted to keep covered.

After looking at the icon, though, I wanted the blue a little stronger. So I did basically the same thing as with the last blue layer. This time, though, to add a little brightness, I moved it so the bottom edge sat right at the top edge of the yellow texture. I could have just masked it off the yellow, but that white splotch, right in the bottom left? That would add brightness, so I wanted that by Leslie. So then I masked away the parts I didn't want, and set it to Soft Light.

As you can see, I masked away everything that covered Leslie again, and I also used a lighter brush to paint over the... I think bulletin board and bars on the right side. In layer masks, black is like 100% opacity, so if you want to erase something completely, use black. The less you want to show through from underneath, the lighter color you use.

♪ step 5: final touches

The first thing I wanted to do was make it a smidge brighter, and maybe smooth out some of the harsher bits of the texture. To do that, I copied a merged layer (Edit>>Copy Merged) and pasted it as a new layer. Then, I went to Adjust>>Blur>>Radial Blur. My settings were:

Blur Type: Spin
Strength (%): 60
And I set the focus/center on the waffle by her right hand (the one on the left side, that is)

The layer looks like this.

Playing around with blurs is one of my favorite techniques and you can get some really cool effects that way. Obviously you don't want to keep it like that, all spun around, so I set the layer to Soft Light, at about 46% opacity. That makes it brighter and a little softer.

Then, I copied a merged layer again and pasted it on top. I took the Soften Brush (found here, if you didn't know), sized very small at a low opacity, and brushed over the line of the yellow texture. If the softened effect is too strong, or if you can't quite get just that line, you can just set that layer's opacity a little lower.

Then, I took another texture - one I use all the time. And I turned it to greyscale.

I pasted that as a new layer and set it to Soft Light, then lowered the opacity to around 46% or so. The white bits add brightness and the darker gray and black bits add shadow.

And BAM! Done! :D

Small Update

Well. I really just can't stop making - so here are a few things I've made recently before I go and get a big post together. Which I probably will. Eventually. But for now, I want a place to sort of catalogue a good/bad comparison. From the icons I've been making lately, it's a lot of hit or miss. I'm very happy with some, but others I don't even want to look at.
