For this batch I wanted to focus more on colors...
I have, in the past (considering I haven't updated for
like a year+ lol.... In the past I usually just used ugly
gradients because I was a noob. So now I wanted to focus
on colors, more than text, which is why there's not too
much texty icons... except the ones that are all text... X/
haha okay maybe not. Anyway, I am getting back in the
swing of things in photoshop (since I've mostly been
using it to draw.. not make graphics) hopefully they
aren't too ..awful. Haha.

I just wanted to make (mostly) boldly colored icons...
with pretty borders that hopefully aren't tacky. omg...
that was the most scattered paragraph I've ever written O_o !

How to NOT make icons tutorial!

Going from this to .

TUTORIAL 1

This is the picture that I start out with. I shrunk it down to fit the 100x100. The first thing I did was clean up Misty's shirt. Since it's all scratchy and ..liney.. in the manga, it'll make the coloring come up terribly.

So here it is whitened..

Next I duplicate it and set that layer to color burn, opacity 40%. To make it darker.

Next I take this brush & set it to Darken, 15% opacity. And then I erased everything covering Misty with the lasso tool.

The I use this color F290A5 and color in the background at Multiply, 15% opacity.

Then I use a brush on 3[or 5] px in this color FFF86C, and color in her shirt on Multiply. I duplicate this and set it to Multiply, 20% opacity.

Then I find a yellow that is particularly Pikachu'ish and color him in <3 *hugs him*

Then I finish coloring Pikachu & do Misty's skin.For the skin I usually just go with a F5C795 & play around with the opacity.

Now.. usually when you color in something that's black, it's not going to show up =/ so at first it seemed pointless to color in her hair.. but what the hey! So I made her a little wig & set it to soft light, opacity 60%.

Believe it or not.. those are Misty's EYEBALLS! :O :O :O I SWIPED 'EM! .........So I draw 2 blue dottish things & set them to Color Dodge, 60% opacity.

Lastly I added a few brushes by dearest And the voi la! here we are - <3

I hope this tutorial isn't completely useless! lol!

These are some other icons I've made using this kind of method.

Going from to !

TUTORIAL 2

Start off with this tex by dearest [that I altered for this icon] as your background.

Next, take this brush by dearest and set it to Color Burn, opacity 10%.

Next get three [or more] pictures of your fandom [or whatever you're making this icon of.] I'm choosing Poke'mon, one of my old obsessions <3 this episode is still a classic, battle aboard the St. Anne. So I take James and I shrink all 3 pictures down to [width] 34 by [height] 60. And then smush them together.

Then I place it in the middle of our background. I duplicate the 3 merged James' and set it to Multiply, 50% opacity, then I duplicate it again an set it to Color Burn, opacity 50% [this may vary depending obviously on the image you're using]

Next I take 06144A & set it to Exclusion.

Then FAE4BE and set it to Luminosity, opacity 10%

Then 09949D, set it to Soft Light, opacity 30%

Then I added my text. Once I was done that I added my text. Flattened the layer & then duplicated it and set it to Soft Light, 40% opacity. And there you have it. We're done.

USING LAYOUTS

Go to MANAGE then CUSTOMIZE

Make sure you're using old system, then go to modify

Make sure ALL of your Page Layout Style's are set to whatever you are told your layout should be under [example = Generator] then scroll down and you should see "COLOR THEME" click "Custom Colors" and put in the codes given to you with the layout

It should look something like this

Scroll down more and you should see an Overrides Box, that's where you type in your layout given to you

Sorry if that tutorial was crappy and unhelpful!

NOTE: This is also by dearest, it's two bases cut off together.. I erased the parts covering Katy's face.

Then I take that box [which I made a different color] and cut out a piece of Katy's face, and paste it underneath, erasing all the parts that look stupid :P!

This is just a shrunken, sharpened picture of a very blonde Gackt <3

Lighten, Opacity 80% Fill 100%
Then I use the eraser tool & erase some of the green that's left on his eyes and making him look a bit silly.

Then I put on this base by filipinoz_rule and put it on screen. Opacity 100% Fill 100%

It looks too whispy for me so I copy my base of Gackt and put it over the the blue layer and set it to Soft Light, Opacity 100% Fill 100% and play around with my color contrast.

Now it looks like this

Then I use half of two bases by dearest and slap it on Soft Light Opacity 100% Fill 100% Which will darken it up a bit!

Now I just add some text and there we have it!

I use Photoshot 7.0 <3

All bases are by Gender [unless said otherwise]

I start out with my base, two pictures with different sizes, smushed together <3

Lighten, Opacity 60% Fill 100%

Multiply, Opacity 100% Fill 100%

Lighten, Opacity 100% Fill 100%

Multiply, Opacity 100% Fill 70%

Lighten, Opacity 40% Fill 100%

Screen, Opacity 60% Fill 40%

Lighten, Opacity 100% Fill 100% Base made by.... Is this your base?

Then I go to Layer >> Flatten Image

And paste this thingy~doo by _coquettish >>
And put it on the bottom of my flattened image on Multiply, Opacity 100% Fill 100%

Now you can add your text and the such! Here's my end result

In a few steps <3

we start with our base

I shrink it down to 200x300, sharpen it once & crop it into my sweet little 100x100 box :) now it looks like this.

Then I take this base by dearest (all of 'em are by dearest actually) & put it on Multiply, 100%

I use the eraser tool to take off the blotches on his face

Opacity: 60%, Fill 40%

Opacity: 20% Fill 60%

I finish off with a black 1px border, and the word "VANILLA" in Artistamp Medium bold font with decorative text at the bottom. Hope this has been helpful or at least interesting :) lol!
