He's from the nineties, what do you expect?

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities:

Scarecrow lacks any type of superhuman abilities, but he makes up for those lacking attributes with knowledge. After all, with knowledge comes power and with great power comes great abuse. Jonathan is well verse in the knowledge of psychology, specifically dealing with fear and phobias. He is akin to a psychological dictionary and can nearly describe any phobic quality in detail.

Another area of expertise seems to be in chemistry, specifically (but not limited to) psychopharmacology. He’s been able to make his fear toxin in just about any form imaginable and he makes sure they work by being the first to test out the effects, albeit in smaller doses.

On the more physical side; Crane has been able to hold his own (granted, it’s for a very limited amount of time.) against Batman and several members from his rogue’s gallery. He’s managed to perfect his own style of martial arts called “Violent Dancing”. The style is a mix between crane style kung-fu and drunken boxing. Both of these styles majorly focus on being able to keep perfect balance and fooling your enemies. As for his actual hand to hand combat? It’s lacking, to say the least.

Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them?

If I have to give him an ability, I think I would like to give him the ability to make people’s nightmares come to life. Of course it would be for a short amount of time. In a sense it would be very realistic, life-like projections. It would almost work like the toxin does, but these projections would be able to hurt the victim. Although, it isn’t just stuck to simple fears like spiders—It could work with things like the fear of drowning might be them sinking inescapably to their death or just struggling to keep afloat. What the projection would be isn’t under his control, but under the other player’s control. (Much like fear toxin.)

The downfall to this ability is that, unlike the toxin, Crane will actually be able to see what the person is experiencing and that makes it very possible for him to be hurt.

Although, this ability is dormant and it would probably be a very, very long time until he finds out he even has the ability. When he does, the effects won’t be that strong. They would range from more mundane phobias (Fear of the dark, spiders, heights, snakes and so forth.) but once he starts learning how to use it, it would move to the more psychological terrors (Fear of loss and other things.) Although, I'd like to leave it up to the other player if and when the chance arises.

Weapons:

Fear toxin

A great deal of his time and effort is put into different varieties of fear toxin, and forms of use (Capsules, Liquid, and most famously gas) This is his pride and joy, quite literally too. The original form of Fear toxin was developed to bring the subjects worst fears into reality (It’s akin to a bad trip). Usually, the toxin focuses on one primary fear bringing it to life, such as small things like spider, bats, or heights, but it’s been known to make the ‘user’ experience past events that have caused them a great deal of fear- Like batman’s parents dying.

During exposure, the toxin makes the ‘user’ feel extremely nauseous, and they generally break out into basic panic attack symptoms. It’s likely whatever hallucination is going on could be projected onto an unaffected person- For example, thinking that your friend is now some kind of monster. His costume comes into play here as well, see during the victim's experience the costume will be much more than a guy in a scarecrow outfit. It's enough to instill great fear in whoever sees him (plus it has a breathing apparatus underneath the mask to make sure he doesn't get affected by his own toxin.)

Note: This usually only happens when an unaffected person is trying to help someone who has been affected.

Another Note: This toxin has been noted to actually GIVE people phobias they didn’t have before.

Aside from his fear toxin, Scarecrow usually carries some form of a scythe.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:

Just a note before I begin: I’d like to point out that Scarecrow’s character has been through many canonical changes that have altered his past into nearly four different varieties of just how it happened. For his history I’ll be providing a Link (http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Jonathan_Crane ), and I’ll do my best to actually summarize the major events. (I’ll be using his history from the Year One verse) Also, I apologize in advance if I end up mixing histories, I really am trying my best to organize this. >:

They say that real trauma begins in our youth and for Jonathan Crane this is what made him the villain he is today. Born out of wedlock to and extremely religious upbringing, his mere existence was considered a sin and disgrace to the Keeny family name. Instead of ‘disposing’ of the child, Great Grandmother Keeny had other plans for the new-born. You see, she didn’t take the child out of pity. Oh no. Not an ounce of love came from that godforsaken woman, the least she could do was ‘maintain’ the boy. He was someone she could punish after her daughter and granddaughter squandered the family name.

He was a loner by nature and while in school books seemed to be his closest friends. Well, for whatever he found to be literature, his great grandmother claimed to it to be filth and for reading such filth (and also generally being like her ‘sinful’ granddaughter) he had to be ‘maintained’ and ‘punished’. She locked him in an abandoned church where flocks of crows proceeded to attack him. She’d have done it several times, enough so he’d know what she intended to do if he need be ‘punished’. No amount of pleading or begging would have made that woman let him out. You see, she wasn’t entirely sane, but Jonathan would realize soon after that his great grandmother had obtained two very important things. These two things were the most powerful forces on earth; Fear and control.

He was forever a victim to cruel nature and taunts. Such behavior warps a young malleable mind. The children he had encountered were nothing less of bullied and unfortunately he’d have to deal with it far past high school. They picked on him; calling him a variety of names from “Scarecrow” to “Ichabod Crane”, but you see, through all of the torment they put him through he still remembered the one thing he had learned from his Great Grandmother. Fear and control. He found out how she got a flock of crows to attack him and tested out that very same method on one of the bullies. Unfortunately, he’d realize a few bruises later that finches weren’t as deadly as crows. The kid would only lose and eye and he’d had to learn the hard way.

As aforementioned; his high school years were even less fun. Although, what made it different was that Crane has a love interest. She went by the name of Sherry Squires, and you could say he was completely infatuated with her. Unfortunately, like all things, life was never too kind to the poor boy, seeing as how she was in love with another guy named Bo Griggs. Fear was a trait Crane held closely. It defined him as a person his entire life. So, it was a big step for him to actually ask the girl out later that year, but fairy tale endings were never a DC comics specialty. The whole thing was just a set up and Crane ended the night with a pumpkin to the back of the head. He would later commit his first murder by brandishing a gun and the oh-so familiar Scarecrow costume in the parking lot of the school. The incident ended up with a very dead Sherry and a paralyzed Griggs. This was where the first spark of delight came from scaring people and the sheer pleasure of tormenting the tormentor.

He’d later commit another act of murder by killing his Great Grandmother. Jonathan would use the very same fear tactic she used, only this time he had all intentions of making the encounter fatal. She would die in that abandoned church.

Skipping a few years ahead he becomes the professor of psychology at Gotham University. He would teach with a very strong emphasis of the study of phobias and fear. His career; although great, wouldn’t last long. Crane pulled out a gun while one of his students had been giving a speech. Hysterically, he jumped up, shouting and pointing a gun at the poor, frightened student. He fired and blew away his career—Quite literally. Despite nearly his whole class getting ‘A’s, the board agreed that it would be best to let the professor walk. Had his ‘mentor’ spoken up his career would have been spared, but the man chose not to and well, the rest is obvious.

Jonathan decides revenge is the only and best route to go. He’d eventually get revenge on the whole board only to catch the sight of The Dark Knight himself. Crane would leave calling cards in the form of straw or very clever placed clues. He took the name [Scarecrow] he was taunted with in his youth. He would soon turn his revenge to his parents. An absentee father and a mother would didn’t offer him an ounce of love. Crane found his father first, picking at his fears, and tormenting his psyche. He’d leave him to his own demise only to be stopped by Batman. Genuinely overjoyed with the presence of the old bat, and his teenaged companion he puts up a pretty fair fight before fleeing. The last time he’s seen by batman is when he attempts to kill his mother. The fight doesn’t last long, and a blast from the past [The Skeleton of his great grandmother Keeny] drives him into jumping off a cliff.

Some time passes and he winds up with a job at Arkham as the lead psychiatrist, but his obsession with fear wouldn’t leave him alone. Crane winds up performing experiments on the patients, but his dirty record eventually catches up with him and he’s left as another patient in the asylum.

Point in Canon:

A little bit after his appearance in Scarecrow: Year One.

Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history:

(Oh man, I apologize for how cut this is, but half of his logs/tags are gone due to deleted journals.)

During his last stay here he wasn't very active, unfortunately. He arrived here and remained very dormant for a very good part of his stay. Most of his time was spent watching other people interact and decided what was the appropriate time to strike. His first move as Scarecrow happened against an NPC, but it was enough to make it very apparent that another one of Gotham's rogues had joined the fun.

He took interest in several different people (Edgeworth, Yaha, Claire) all for different reasons that would prove to be very important and almost of the petty nature. Yaha was one of the first residents he tested his toxin on and it proved to be success

Although, during his brief stint, he managed to get on the bad side of several people here by taking an interest in a young girl named Claire. He saw her healing abilities and from there it was only a matter of curiosity. Would she be immune, how long would it last? In the end he ended up sneaking into her apartment, assaulting her and posting the results all over the network

Character Personality:

Note: I’m going to be splitting this into two separate parts. One of them will be for Jonathan Crane’s side and the other for Scarecrow. I really don’t want to slap on MPD/DID (Since I know it wouldn't be an accurate assumption.) with him, but it is certainly obvious that under the mask his attitude changes greatly.

Crane is extremely smart and even more so in a psychological respect. He has always prided himself in his academic expertise and his general fascination with a variety of books came in handy. To say his actions are controlled would be an understatement; every word that comes out of his mouth has a planned action and reaction. He is very, very calculated and his controlling nature compels him to alienate anyone that could possibly come close to matching his intellect. Everyone is equal on the playing field, meaning they’re all test subjects waiting to be experimented on.

He literally takes people watching to a whole new level. His power comes from the mere observation of people; their actions, their weaknesses, their strengths and more importantly their fears. Although, his obsession isn’t over knowledge or even people. No, no, it’s over fear! The sheer terror of what people experience, that inescapable “flight or flight” response and who could forget the panic. Oh, he loved it all! The study of fear was just the beginning of the obsession. The more he learned, the easier it was to bend and break people. Soon appeared certain crave for it that would quickly turned into some kind of skewed addiction with every exposure to fear toxin making it worse.

Over all, inside the inner most workings of his psychopathic mind he wears a mask and that mask is named Jonathan Crane. He was a psychologist and an exceptionally gifted one at that. He’s very talented at what he does and what he does isn’t for a good cause. After all, it was his field of study and eventually his job to know the inner workings of one’s mind. So, you can bet he’ll be exceptionally well at reading people and he intends to be diagnosing anyone he comes across. Just like in Gotham, people are a game and the name of the game is pushing people to and beyond their limits.

Being a psychopath means he’s well versed in lying as a general aspect. He was able to put up the psychologist mask for Batman when he asked about the Joker and he was able to last as a professor until his little “incident” that had him fired. He was able to hold a straight face and lie to many of Batman’s rogues. The chances of him slipping up are very slim to none. After all, he does pride himself in being profession and a general lack of care for the health and well-being of his patients doesn’t scream professional.

His genuine social skills are lacking, but he’s a pretty good liar as previous mentioned. Crane has an arrogant tone big enough to match his sadistic side and he’s not afraid to tell you just how stupid he thinks you are, if that’s what the case may be. He has a high sense of superiority and it’s almost blatantly obvious so, but don’t get him wrong… He has acquired a bit of a knack for a certain type of dark and sarcastic kind of humor. Comedy was never his Schick, which was always Joker’s M.O.

Scarecrow is one of the greatest examples of aggression mimicry. As a child he learned that fear tactics gain control. You didn’t need to be the epitome of smart; you just needed to know what your victim’s fears were. You see, with most bullies it was violence, but that tactic couldn’t work with someone as lanky as Crow is. So, he decided to manifest fear into a moniker and mask called Scarecrow and it worked. Well, so long as he had his toxin ready at hand.

While wearing the mask he is far less controlled, his actions tend to be based more on impulse than calculations. He gets an adrenaline rush that interferes with his rational thinking. He’s more likely to do something in the heat of the moment that could cost him the entire battle. He does lose control and he does find himself personally invested in certain battles. This could be one of the main reasons he always loses to that old bat and his winged companion.
His god-complex is as big as the Nile is long. The Scarecrow himself is a self-proclaimed ‘God of Fear’. He believes he is the one and only embodiment of fear. His narcissism knows no bounds and he’d like everyone to agree with that title. When he commits a crime he wants everyone to know just who did it… Well, that’s only if you can guess just who his calling cards belong to. He isn’t one to just give someone the answer and the fact that he holds people to higher standards than he should doesn’t help. He really does think Batman and Co. are smart enough to solve just who/what is committing these crimes.

But of course the crimes he commits aren’t all just stuck to experiments and elaborate plots to blindside Batman. He has a petty side and he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty for some funding. The human life means less to him than performing experiments, or getting revenge and he has made that quite clear with his actions.

Also, while in costume is seems he loses touch with reality and what sanity really is and he does it quite often. He has a knack for spouting bad nursery rhymes and even worse poetry. Even while being beaten by Batman he’ll shout lines from ‘There was an old woman who lived in a shoe’. He’ll frequently claim that Jonathan Crane is no longer in existence and that there is only the Scarecrow now. It’s only when he’s back in Arkham, or when he’s fully escaped from Batman’s sights that Jonathan grasps for some degree of sanity. Though, the operative word here being ‘some’.

All in all; this ‘persona’ is his only way of bringing the citizens of Gotham to their knees. It’s a way to get back at all those childhood bullies he had to put up with and show them just how puny they were, but above all else; it was a way to make even Gotham’s own dark knight tremble in his costumed boots. He would know terror and that terror would have a very recognizable face.

His idea of power comes from breaking people’s mental abilities and he has the power to do just that.

Conditional: Personality development in previous game:

His personality didn't change enough from staying here for it to be notable. The only thin that would be different than canon, would be his CR with characters.

Character Plans:

He'll be mouth-breathing down everyone's neck. Since there are a lot more capes here than there were before, he'll be far more careful than he was last time. He'd be prone to doing his research in the dark and he'll be more concealed about his prodding over the network.

Appearance/PB:

I'll be using his appearance from the Year One special

Writing Samples

First Person Sample

[The audio feed cuts on, but nothing sounds for a few minutes. If you’re lucky, you might hear the very faint sounds of shoes on wood flooring. He doesn’t speak, instead text appears on the screen.]

Siren’s port? Oh, have I really been graced with your presence again?

How quaint.

[A few minutes pass.]

This is Dr. Jonathan Crane speaking. Perhaps it would be a bit redundant of me to ask, but; have there been any new developments since my last departure?

Third Person Sample

He was careful—meticulous, even. Everything he had worked on, everything he had done up until this point required great care. He touched the edge of the cylinder container, finger tips sliding along the rough sides of it. He smiled at first, but it turned into a wild grin soon after. Of course he could recreate his work in this place, even with these limited resources, he was a god after all.

But his victory, like many other things he’s managed to accomplished, ended up short-lived. A screech sounded from outside, a certain feathered friend making it’s distaste rather vocal at night. However, the noise caught him off guard and his work scattered outward; cylinders and bottles hitting the floor with repetitive clatter. His first instinct was to bring his sleeve to his face, but not being able to leave the building would pose quite the problem.

A short intake of air.

He shouldn’t have been celebrating so soon. What a waste. A complete and utter waste of his supplies—Well, it isn’t a total waste if he still gets to experience that glorious feeling.

He could feel it rising. It started with a slow tremble in his feet and that inescapable feeling of your hair standing on end. He would love the experience had he not been terrified. Jonathan turned heel to run, but his actions slowed and he faltered. A cough and he knew what came next. Franticly his eyes searched the room for haven, but they found nothing. The floorboards started to crack, fingers clawing them from underneath; desperate to get free. It was hard to breathe, it was impossible to move and his muscles felt tense. His lips parted, mouth left agape as he watched his now recognizable grandmother claw her way through the floor. Her skin was gone and she lacked any signs of having eyes, but somehow her gaze was locked on him. She screeched, vocal cords somehow alive when she was not.

All he could do in response was shout and he did so. Stumbling backwards he found himself on the floor, hands trying to grasp the cold ground while he tried pushing himself away from the reanimated remains. Soon after his small retreat he found himself with his back against the wall. Trapped like a frightened animal and his captor wasn’t halting anytime soon. His hands flew up, attempting to pull himself up from the floor.

“Please.”

He breathed. The words sounded far, they didn't belong to him and they would teeter making any plea he could force out non-existent.

“You’re only in my mind— You’re not real!”

He had more to say, but that was soon washed over by another scream.

The hacking of the crows outside started to drown out the sound of his dying voice. They’d circle and attempt to get in the building to attack a very vulnerable Crane, but their efforts proved to be futile. They’d be there until it was nearly morning, long after his screams died out.

Important: In the event you don't want Crane bad-touching you and your brain, please let me know! If you do; what are your limits?

Since I am clearly not as smart as Jonathan in the psychological regard, I'm going to ask for a bit of help from you guys. You see, Scarecrow here is extremely good at reading characters and one of his favorite past times is to diagnose everyone he happens to come in contact with. He likes to figure out what makes your characters tick, so to speak.

The way you can help me <s>and him</s> out is if you tell me a little bit about your character. Such as your character's Fears/phobias, things that he would/should be able to notice, and anything else you deem necessary.

Of course, you don't have to if you don't want to, but it would be extremely helpful to me. Also, comments are screened.
