ficwize' Candy Hearts" ficathon for the prompt of "Kiss Me". Takes place in a world where the Teen Titans and Young Avengers co-exist. I call it handwave-verse. :p
This sucked. Cassie groaned as she shifted in her bed at Titans Tower, trying in vain to get comfortable. It had been a routine mission - taking out the Fearsome Five in about fifteen minutes like usual, then jet off to New York for a romantic dinner with Kate. Breaking her leg hadn't been part of that plan. But somehow, Mammoth had managed to plow into her shin at exactly the wrong angle, and the next thing she knew, she was in the hospital getting her leg x-rayed. This was NOT a good way to find out the exact limits of her invulnerablity, she thought as she glared at the full-length cast covering her leg. The doctors weren't sure exactly how fast she would heal thanks to her powers, but one thing was for sure - she wasn't going to be flying to New York anytime soon. She had reluctantly called Kate to cancel, and was pretty much resigned to spending this Valentine's Day alone in bed with a pint of ice cream, a bad movie, and some painkillers. Now if she could just get the hang of crutches enough to get to the freezer downstairs...
Cassie was snapped out of her depression by what sounded like a small plane landing on the heliport outside the tower. No one was supposed to be returning from a mission right now, and most villains didn't announce themselves by landing on the helipad. Whoever it was, if they didn't have clearance to be at the tower, the security system could probably take care of them better than she could right now.
"Hey! WG! Would you mind telling the laser guns not to shoot me? That would be awesome!"
At the sound of the voice outside the tower, Cassie jumped out of bed, momentarily forgetting that she was down to one good leg at the moment. Awkwardly making it to the window, she stuck her head out. "Kate? What are you - "
"You didn't really think I would leave my girl injured halfway across the country on Valentine's Day, did you?" Kate shot Cassie her trademark grin from the ground, looking only slightly nervous at the automated security system pointing lasers at her. "But seriously, you do know how to de-activate these things, right?"
Cassie quickly shouted the de-activation code, and the laser guns retracted into the ground. Grabbing her crutches, she tried to make it downstairs to greet Kate, but barely made it to the door before her girlfriend burst into the room.
"Cass!" Kate said in mock indignation as she wrapped her arms around Cassie. "You know you're supposed to be the invulnerable one, right?"
"I'll try to keep that in mind." Cass said wryly as she collapsed on the bed, maneuvering her leg back onto the pile of pillows she was elevating it on. "I can't believe you flew all the way out here."
"Private jet. Rich heiress, remember? Just because I don't go around flaunting it doesn't mean I can't use it when it's for a good cause." Kate grinned as she sat down on the bed next to Cassie, her eyes falling on the cast. "Wow, it's really broken, huh? I know you said, but - "
"Yeah..." Cassie crossed her arms in frustration. "Broken tibia. It would have taken me out of action for three months if it wasn't for my healing factor. As it is, probably a couple of weeks."
"That sucks. Waiting to heal always drives me insane."
"I know. I'm the one getting the phone calls and bringing you whatever you want as long as you'll stay in bed and rest." Cassie laughed, her hand entwined with Kate's. "Thanks for coming."
"I can't believe you thought I wouldn't. And I didn't come alone either." Kate grinned as she picked up a big bag from the floor. "Chocolates from Dylan's Candy Bar. No hazelnuts."
"Mmmm....you know me too well."
"And that's not all." Kate pulled out a small box, revealing a jeweled necklace which she draped around Cassie's neck. "You like it?"
"I love it. Wow. I got you something, but it's at my mom's place, and I never got back there after..."
"Shhh." Kate smiled as she leaned in to kiss Cassie. "That's not important right now. Right now, I just want to make sure I can give you the perfect Valentine's Day. You remember our reservations at Le Bernadin?"
"Yeah. I guess you had to cancel?"
"Well...if by cancel you mean hire them to fly out here too. They're in the kitchen downstairs."
"No." Cassie gaped.
"I had been planning to rent the place out just for us anyway. It was the next best thing." Kate grinned as she wrapped her arms around Cassie. "Dinner should be ready soon, and we can eat up here if you want. Whatever makes you more comfortable."
"I'm pretty comfortable right now..." Cassie snuggled up against Kate. "I just need one more thing."
"Anything."
"Kiss me."
Kate obliged, a long and passionate kiss that made Cassie forget all about the annoying dull ache in her leg. It had been a horrible start to the day, but this was turning out to be the best Valentine's Day ever.
