Author's Notes: Written in Yuletide 2008 for pervyficgirl. One of the last fics I wrote in 2008, and possibly my favorite. I'll be posting my ficathon fics in my journal as I get the time. This is the first. :)

"Okay, we've got a full agenda planned! First, we go to Big Bubba's BBQ and order their all you can eat seven meat platter. Then we hit the biggest laser tag arena in the US!"

"Maybe we hit the laser tag arena first? I mean, laser tag on a full stomach..."

"Part of the challenge, Jaime! And when we're done there, we can hit Ripley's and get pictures with the two-headed crocodile!"

Brenda shook her head as Jaime and Paco planned their day in New York. "Guys, we've only got three days in New York, and one of them is going to be the NYU tour. Don't you want to do something...I don't know, more special? There's barbecue and laser tag in El Paso."

"But not two-headed crocodiles!" Paco retorted.

"Touche. But still, this is New York! I've wanted to go here my whole life. Don't you want to experience the culture? I mean, we could go to the Metropolitan, explore Central Park, even go skating in Rockefeller Center!"

"Laser tag is culture. Totally. When archaeologists are digging through the ruins of our civilization one day, they'll find a laser tag arena, and on the wall, they'll find an engraving saying 'Paco owned Jaime here'"

Brenda rolled her eyes. "C'mon, Jaime, back me up here!"

"Sorry, Brenda, got to go with Paco here. I mean, how else am I going to wipe that smirk off his face?"

"Okay, okay." Brenda sighed. "Why don't we just split up for the day? I downloaded maps online, so I can make my way around the city by myself. You guys can go have your...fun, and I'll do my thing. We'll meet up later at the hotel."

"Sounds like a plan! Come on, Blue Beetle, you're totally getting your butt kicked! And no using the bug in your head to cheat!"

Paco and Jaime ran off to settle the score in laser tag, and Brenda pulled out her map. Finally, the city was hers to explore. As much as she loved Jaime and Paco, they could be so...Jaime and Paco sometimes. Hopefully, in a year's time, this city would be here home, and she couldn't wait to get to know it.

--

Brenda sat on a bench in the middle of Rockefeller Center. She'd read all about the ice rink in the middle of the world's biggest city, but seeing it up close was different.

"Hey there. New in town?"

Brenda was startled out of her thoughts as a girl about her age, with long dark hair, spoke to her. "Oh! Uh, yeah, I guess. I'm visiting NYU. How could you tell?"

"It's pretty easy. You've still got that look on your face where you're seeing this city for the first time. For a jaded New Yorker like me, it's pretty easy to tell. Plus, your hands are full of touristy stuff."

Brenda looked down at her assorted pamphlets and guides, and shoved them into her pocket. "Heh. I'm Brenda Delvecchio. Nice to meet you."

"Kate Bishop. You're by yourself here?"

"Sort of. My two goofy best friends are off playing laser tag and stuffing themselves with meat, not necessarily in that order. I figured I'd take the time to explore a little."

"Yeah, I know all about being surrounded by goofy guys. I'm kind of at the center of a lot of them." Kate grinned. "Were you going to skate?"

"Oh, no! I'm from Texas. I think the last time there was ice on the ground, a supervillain was attacking."

"Well, no time like now to give it a try, right? Come on, you can't do any worse than the guy in the green polyester pants down there, right?"

Brenda meekly protested as Kate tried to convince her, but suddenly they were startled out of their conversation by sirens nearby. The sound of bank alarms going off and police rushing to the scene made it clear something was going on nearby.

Kate suddenly looked nervous. "Um, I just remembered...I told the guys I'd meet them at FAO Schwarz at 2! I've got to run or I'm going to be late. Good meeting you, Brenda!"

Kate ran off, and Brenda couldn't shake the feeling that Kate's lame attempt at an excuse sounded familiar. And then it hit her. It was the exact kind of weak, hurried excuse to leave the scene quickly that Jaime always made whenever Blue Beetle needed to go deal with a crisis and there was someone who wasn't in on his secret around. Brenda knew she should probably leave well enough alone, but curiosity got the best of her, and before she knew it, she was following the path of the sirens to the bank. The police hadn't secured a perimeter yet, and she was able to slip into the evacuated bank where the sounds of fighting could be heard.

"Give it up, Stilt-Man! Seriously, it might be time to re-evaluate career options!"

"NEVER! Spider-man may have beat me, but there's no way I'm losing to a girl with a bow!"

Brenda turned the corner and gasped. It was Kate, all right. She was dressed in a purple costume and wielding a bow and arrow. She was currently clinging onto the back of a man in a ten-foot suit of armor, complete with giant legs, who was furiously trying to shake her off. Brenda knew that given some of the villains Jaime had fought, she really shouldn't laugh, but this guy seemed low rent even by those standards."

"Blast you, Hawkgirl! I will - "

"It's Hawkeye!"

"I will have RESPECT!"

Stilt-man, flailing wildly, managed to connect with Kate, knocking her off his back and sending her crashing into a nearby cabinet. She landed on the floor, the cabinet crashing down on her foot, and for a moment that seemed like forever, she didn't stir. Finally, she started to pick herself up, but by then, Stilt-man was standing over her.

"Foolish girl! You'll send a message to the heroes of New York! No one messes with Stilt-Man!"

Stilt-man raised his giant metal boot, about to bring it down on Kate. Given another minute, Kate might have been able to get her leg free and roll out of the way, but she was still too disoriented.

Suddenly, a piece of mortar crashed into Stilt-Man's head. He turned around, glaring at Brenda, who was slightly in shock at what she had just done.

"You! I don't know who you are, but you'll pay too! This is the day people learn to fear the wrath of Stilt- "

Suddenly, Stilt-Man stopped dead in his tracks, shaking wildly as a massive electric shock hit him. He collapsed forward as Brenda dodged out of the way of the falling supervillain. An arrow could be seen sticking out of the power pack on the back of his armor.

"Finally." Kate groaned. "Most annoying villain ever."

"Oh, geez!" Brenda rushed over. "Are you okay?"

"I think so. Maybe. Wow, you're either the craziest girl I've ever met, or the bravest. You throw things at supervillains often?"

Brenda could feel her face getting red. "Well...you know my goofy best friend I was telling you about? He's kind of a superhero. So I guess I'm used to this kind of thing by now. I mean, I couldn't exactly let Stilt-guy over here step on you."

"Yeah, I appreciate that. I'm never going to live this down once the guys hear about it." Kate groaned as she tried to pull her foot free. "Little help here?"

Brenda ran over to the cabinet and, with some effort, lifted it a few inches so Kate could get free. Kate breathed a sigh of relief as she rubbed her foot. Brenda helped her off the ground, letting the raven-haired girl lean on her shoulder.

"Damnit. Yeah, definitely never living this down. I can take on Skrulls, Kang, and Iron Man, but not Stilt-Man?"

"Are you going to be okay? I mean, we could go to the hospital. We don't have to tell them who you are."

Kate shook her head. "I'll be fine. Probably. Hopefully I can just ice it and it'll be okay. Just help me get home, okay?" As Brenda helped Kate limp out of the bank, Kate turned to her. "That superhero friend of yours...he's a pretty lucky guy."

"Thanks. I just try to help, you know? It's nothing, really."

"No way. I mean, you're not a costume, but you throw yourself into the middle of these crazy battles and put yourself at risk just because that's the kind of person you are." Kate smiled. "I wish more of the heroes around here were like that."

"Um...I just wanted to..." Brenda stammered as she and Kate locked eyes. Their faces drew closer and they shared a quick kiss. It was over as quickly as it began, but Brenda could still feel the sweetness of Kate's lipstick lingering on her lips long after they were gone. The boys were never going to believe this, she thought to herself.

--

"Dude, you totally cheated! You were using your scarab-sight or whatever!"

"Just admit you got beat, Paco. I don't need the Scarab to school you in laser tag!"

As Jaime and Paco were arguing, Brenda ran up to them. "Hey, guys! How was your day?"

"Pretty cool. Paco here's a sore loser, though. What about you? Get what you wanted out of the city?"

"That's the thing about New York...you don't know what you're looking for until you find it." Brenda said, smiling slyly.

Paco and Jaime shrugged. "Okay, then."

As the trio of friends headed to their rooms, Brenda kept the piece of paper with Kate's number gripped tightly in her hand. She didn't know what would happen once this weekend was over, but she knew that she couldn't wait to see Kate again, hopefully without a rampaging Stilt-Man this time. She'd tell Paco and Jaime about Kate soon enough, but for right now, this new relationship was her own private adventure. She ducked into her room and picked up the phone, dialing.

"Hey, Kate."
