ficwize. This was supposed to be a quick-fic, and wound up being longer than the original. XD
Hal barely heard his emergency signal ring amid the screams of rage from Khund warriors and the firing of laser beams. Dodging a hurled axe, he checked the caller ID.
"Now's not the best time for a call, Hal!" Kyle yelled as he artfully disarmed and knocked out a warlord.
"It's Cissie! She wouldn't use this unless it was important! Can you hold the fort down for a second?"
"Sure. No problem." Kyle knew his words sounded less than convincing as he stared down the Khund army.
Hal flew behind a half-destroyed building, formed a shield around himself, and turned on his phone. "Cissie?"
"Hey, dad! You sound stressed."
"Well, a little. I'm kind of in the middle of a battle here, kid. What is it?"
"Well, I know you told me not to use this unless it was an emergency, and I told them you'd take care of the paperwork later, but the people at the hospital are being really anal, and - "
Hal's head shot up. "Wait, hospital? Cissie, what happened?"
Cissie sighed. "Don't freak out, okay? I was in gymnastics practice, I tried to do something a little unconventional with a backflip, it didn't work out, and I hurt my foot."
"Unconventional how, exactly?"
"I figured I was landing them fine off the vault, so I wanted to see if I could land one off the bleachers. Turns out I couldn't."
Hal facepalmed. "We'll talk about this when I get there, which will be as soon as humanly possible. Will you be okay until then?"
"Yeah. Tim's with me, I've got an ice pack and some aspirin, and I'm waiting to be taken in for x-rays. Just...get here soon, okay, dad?"
Hal heard a slight quiver in his daughter's voice as he hung up the phone. Looking towards the battlefield, he knew only one thing. He had to get out of here, and now.
Kyle was knocked off his feet by the massive blast of green energy that hit the battlefield, raining chaos down on the hundreds of Khund soldiers in the vicinity. When it cleared, there wasn't a single Khund platoon left standing. Kyle removed the shield covering him and looked around.
"Hal? Are you crazy, man? You nearly killed me!"
"Yeah, I got a little carried away. Got the job done, though. We've got to get out of here. Cissie's hurt, and - " Hal looked at his flickering ring. "Damn it! I'm out of juice!"
"Okay, calm down. I've got enough for both of us." Kyle enveloped Hal in a green bubble and lifted him off the planet's surface. "Is Cissie okay?"
"Yeah, it's just her foot. She was showing off in gymnastics class and got hurt. I'm used to going off-world. I'm not used to having to worry my kid will take some crazy dive off the bleachers while I'm battling the Khund!"
Kyle smirked a little. "Looks like she's your daughter after all, 'Daredevil' Jordan."
"It's not the same thing, Kyle." Hal sighed. "I'm an adult. I know what I'm doing. Besides...she's my kid. Man, I wish I could talk to my mom about this right now. I finally get where she was coming from."
"Then don't make the same mistake she did. Talk with Cissie about why you're worried, but don't make her feel like you don't get it. She probably feels guilty enough about scaring you."
Hal cocked an eyebrow at his boyfriend. "How exactly are you so good at this? You don't have a kid or two stashed somewhere that you never told me about, do you?"
"Not that I know of, flyboy. So far."

Hal and Kyle landed outside the hospital.
"You want me to wait out here, Hal?"
"No. Come in. Make sure I don't say anything stupid. You're good at that."
Hal gave Kyle a quick kiss, then ran in the door.
"Hi, I'm the father of Cissie King-Jordan?"
The receptionist looked at her chart. "Right, she's in the examination room just down the hall. She told us you had a job that takes you out of town a lot. She really didn't want to bother you, but I'm afraid we needed a parent's signature."
"It's fine. I can go back and see her?"
The receptionist nodded. "She's waiting for the x-rays to come back. You can go right back." Her eyes turned to Kyle. "He's with you?"
"He's family."
As Hal and Kyle entered the examination room, Cissie was lying on the table, her injured foot propped up with an ice pack on it. Tim was sitting next to her, stroking her hand.
"Dad! I'm sorry I - "
"Shh. It's okay. Just promise me you won't do anything crazy like that again. I know I'm not exactly the best example on that front, but still. I don't want to see you hurt, especially any worse than this."
Cissie nodded. "I totally thought I'd make it, though. I just kinda landed wrong."
"That's the problem with bad ideas. They always looks like good ideas at the time." Hal turned to Tim. "You've been taking care of my girl till I got here?"
"As best as I could, Mr. Jordan."
Hal nodded. He had to admit Tim was starting to grow on him. At least, to the point where he no longer wanted to chase him off with a green bulldozer. Plus, the annoyance it caused Bruce to have his son dating Hal's daughter did have it's appeal.
Kyle stepped forward, extending his hand to Cissie. "Hi. I'm Kyle Rayner. Your dad probably told you about me once or twice?"
"Once or twice?" Cissie laughed. "He won't shut up about you! I was starting to wonder if we'd ever get to meet."
Smirking, Kyle poked Hal in the ribs. "See, I told you she'd be fine with it."
Everyone stopped talking as the ER doctor walked in the room and placed some x-rays on the wall. "Hi, you must be Cissie's father. As you can see here, she does have a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in her foot. It's a relatively minor injury, but it will need a non-weight-bearing cast for four to six weeks. I'll prep the equipment, and she'll be out of here in a few hours."
As the Doctor left, Cissie grumbled under her breath. "This sucks. I was hoping it was just sprained or something. I can't believe I ruined my summer over some stupid stunt." She turned to Tim. "We were going to go camping and everything. I suck."
"It's okay, Ciss. I'm fine hanging out wherever you are."
Cissie accepted Tim's hug. "I know, but still..."
Hal softly ruffled Cissie's hair. "Hey, cheer up, kid. It'll fly by. Besides, the occasional broken bone is a ritual of youth. Did I ever tell you about my first one?"
Cissie's eyes perked up a little. "...This has got to be good. I'm listening."
"I'll tell you all the gory details at home, but let's just say that while bottle rockets look strong, they're not exactly equipped to carry a ten-year-old boy, no matter how many you've got."
Kyle snickered. "Way to set a good example there, Hal."
"Hey, what can I say, Kyle? The girl's a Jordan. Risks run in our blood."
