"I knew this was going to happen! I told you we should have taken a left revolution at the Khand system!"

Kyle stewed as his ring beeped, signaling a low charge. Hal was never good at asking for directions or admitting they were wrong, and now they were stranded in space.

"Cool down, Kyle. I've sent out a Lantern-in-distress beacon. The Sector Lantern will be back with a new charge for us by morning. We've just got to hunker down."

Kyle threw his hands up in frustration. "Hunker down. Easy for you to say, Mr. 'We don't need our batteries! It's just a short trip to sector 321!'. This happens every time we go on a mission. Always the daredevil."

"I couldn't know we'd get caught up in an alien civil war on what was supposed to be a routine flyover, Kyle. It's just one night in the cold. Besides, it's not like you've got a reason to rush home tonight."

Kyle turned sharply towards Hal. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"You're going back to your bachelor pad. I've got a daughter worrying where I am. It's not like I can just pull out my cell phone and let her know I'll be home in the morning."

"Really? You're going to pull the Cissie card on me, Hal? After all the times I was there for you when things got hard? That's just low."

"Whatever. Let's just hunker down and get this night over with. We've got our Lantern emergency survival packs. Pull out your thermal warmers and let's just go to sleep."

Hal pulled out the metallic blanket and spread it over the empty space, the green energy stored inside giving it a warm glow.

Kyle gave Hal a sheepish look. "Um...I may have given mine away to that refugee family we encountered on the way out. Don't worry about me. I'll just freeze it out."

Hal shook his head. It was just like Kyle to give the shirt off his back to any organism he saw in trouble. "Come on. It won't keep two as warm as one, but it should be enough to keep us from freezing our butts off tonight."

Kyle gave Hal a suspicious look. "Don't do me any favors. You've got a kid to think about."

"Oh, come on, Rayner." Hal sighed. "I'm sorry I was a jerk. Being stranded in deep space tends to bring out the worst in a guy. Now get under here before I have to drag you. I'm not letting you freeze."

Kyle reluctantly crawled under Hal's thermal warmer. It was a tight fit, and gave them virtually no choice but to huddle close. An appealing prospect, if he wasn't still a bit mad at Hal.

"You're right, you know. You have been there for us. When we get back to Earth...I think it's time for you two to meet. Cissie should get to know you."

"That's a pretty big step, Hal. We should discuss it when we're not waiting for rescue in deep space. But if you still feel that way tomorrow....I've been waiting to hear that."

Kyle moved closer to Hal under the glowing blanket, allowing his boyfriend to wrap his arms around him. Not how he planned to spend his night, but it definitely could be worse.
