"Are you crazy, Dick? We can't do this!"
"Do you have a better idea, Roy? She needs a place to stay. She needs a family."
Roy rubbed his temples. "Okay. Explain to me again what happened, exactly, and I'll think about it."
Dick thought back to exactly what Tim had told him when he came to Titans Tower that day. "Apparently the Titans were fighting this new villain named Kid Chronos. Rose got cocky, tried to take him out, and took one of his chronal blasts to the chest. Well....you can see what happened next. By Doc Midnite's analysis, she's a perfectly healthy 8-year-old. She can remember bits and pieces of the last eight years, although they're sort of hazy, and her mind is mostly like a child's again. It's as if the last half of her life was simply...erased. And everything that came with it."
Dick couldn't help but sneak a peek at Rose's face as she played with Lian in the living room. Namely, those two perfect blue eyes.
Roy sighed. "Well...I suppose if anyone deserves a second chance, she does. You really want to do this, huh?"
Dick grinned, kissing Roy on the cheek. "Absolutely. You're a great dad to Lian, and I know you'll do great with Rose."
Back in the living room, Lian stared at the strange white-haired girl sitting across from her. She knew it was Rose Wilson, her old nanny, but it was so odd to see her just barely older than she was. She wasn't sure exactly how to break the ice, so she did what usually worked best.
"Wanna play My little Ponyleague?"
Rose eyed Lian quizzically. "What's that?"
Lian produced a group of toy ponies, each wearing a costume of a member of the Justice League. "My little ponies are kinda boring. Superponies are awesome, though."
Rose picked up a Batman pony and looked it over. "It needs weapons. But your dad took all of mine when he brought me here."
Lian looked towards the closet at the side of the room. "They put them in there. I'm not allowed in there."
Rose eyed the closet. She had a vague memory of being able to pick locks like that, and wondered if she should try it some time.
"Hey, girls! You want to go out and get something to eat?"
The thought of lock-picking escaped Rose's mind as Dick and Roy entered the room. Lian jumped up and hugged her father.
"Honey, Rose is going to be staying with us from now on. How do you feel about that?"
Lian thought for a second. "She can share my toys. But not Bat-bear."
Roy laughed. "We'll get Rose her own Bat-bear, then."
As Lian took Roy's hand as they walked out the door, Dick extended his own hand to Rose. After a second of hesitation, she took it. Feeling her small hand grip his, Dick thought to himself that it was nice that once in a while, the universe gave second chances.
