Don’t know if he’s a prince, but I hope someone crowns him!

From The Los Angeles Times:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney personally oversaw at least four briefings with senior members of Congress about controversial interrogation programs, part of a secretive and forceful defense he mounted throughout 2005 in an effort to maintain support for the harsh techniques used against detainees.

The Cheney-led briefings came at some of the most crucial moments for the program, as congressional oversight committees were threatening to investigate or even terminate the techniques used in interrogations, according to lawmakers, congressional officials and current and former intelligence officials.

More Tsuris From Burris

From The Washington Post:

CHICAGO — Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.), appointed late last year to replace President Obama in the U.S. Senate, has informed Illinois lawmakers that he did not tell them the complete story about his contacts with close associates of Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) before he got the job.

He Never Met a Microphone He Didn’t Like

From Chicago Breaking News:

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich kept up his impeachment-fighting media tour this morning, reciting the same arguments he’s been making for days that he’s the victim of a political witch hunt.

The governor has a full media agenda today [Tuesday], with no less than 11 appearances.

2008: End of an Error

I was a little sentimental, as I sometimes get at the end of the year, and I thought a little retrospective sing-along might be in order.

To the tune of My Way, written by Revaux and Claude François, English words by Paul Anka, as performed by Francis Albert Sinatra:

Troll Model

From The New York Times:

Dick Cheney, Role Model

In all the talk about the vice-presidential debate, there was an issue that did not get much attention but kept nagging at us: Sarah Palin’s description of the role and the responsibilities of the office for which she is running, vice president of the United States.

In Thursday night’s debate, Ms. Palin was asked about the vice president’s role in government. She said she agreed with Dick Cheney that “we have a lot of flexibility in there” under the Constitution. And she declared that she was “thankful that the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president also, if that vice president so chose to exert it.”

It is hard to tell from Ms. Palin’s remarks whether she understands how profoundly Dick Cheney has reshaped the vice presidency — as part of a larger drive to free the executive branch from all checks and balances. Nor did she seem to understand how much damage that has done to American democracy.

Veco-nomics

From the Anchorage Daily News:

Federal prosecutors offered a glimpse of previously unseen evidence against U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens in new court filings Thursday, including allegations that Stevens used insider help to turn a secret $5,000 investment in a Florida condo development into more than $100,000 in quick profits.

The government also dismissed assertions by Stevens that his conduct was shielded by the constitution as a member of Congress, citing nine examples of Stevens’ “errands” and requests involving Veco that had nothing to do with protected lawmaking.
