The 2022 World Malaria Report estimated about 619 000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2021 and 247 million cases (up from 245 million in 2020 and 232 million in 2019). Since then, global malaria burden has continued to rise: 2023 saw around 263 million cases and 597 000 deaths, and the most recent 2025 World Malaria Report estimates about 282 million cases and 610 000 deaths in 2024, roughly 9 million more cases than the previous year. Despite continued use of vaccines, improved nets, and preventive treatments, progress toward reducing malaria remains off track, with the WHO African Region bearing most cases and deaths.
