2 Large Abstract Textures

A couple of large-scale abstract (stone and paper-based) textures, free for use for being cut up for icons, manipulated for headers, adapted for further texture creation, etc. All the rules are on the DA pages, where these downloads are kept. These were fun, might do more. :)

Brushes: Pixel Linework

Note: Older brushes are available again. I hadn't realized that, when I made a bunch of old personal entries private, I'd caught brushes with them. If you follow the brushes tag in this journal to the tag in my personal journal, you'll see where to grab them.

So anyway here are some crazy linework brushes in either 1 or 2-pixel thickness. I'm picturing these being used for texture generation, but hey, you all will have more imagination than I do! I am strapped for time right now and cannot take the time to make image packs, but I will try to do so in the future.

Please comment & credit back to miconics so people can see where to download the files. I'm not picky about where, at all... just so people can see where they'd grab the .abr if they make the effort to hunt for it.

These are not very complicated brushes, so I have to think they would work with earlier versions. Let me know, and I shall be extra super conscious about making image packs if they only work with recent versions of Photoshop.

Penny Arcade icons

I wanted some nice simple Penny Arcade icons. I know I have city and cartoon icons that I owe you guys; a major move has NOT been helpful in that regard, so hopefully I should get those all finished up when I'm settled in at the new place!

How to install: if you host on your own server.

1. Download the zip file. You'll see a folder with 132 images and a file called mood.txt.
2. Upload all images to a directory on a server that lets you access pictures remotely. (Just about any paid host, that is; Geocities and other free sites usually have this blocked. But something like Photobucket works.) Note the location of your images; it'll look something like http://www.yourserver.com/images/mood/ depending on where you decide to put them.
3. Go to the Livejournal Admin Console and enter moodtheme_create name des. Name will be what you want to title this mood theme, and would be like "American Idol," while Des is the description, and would be something like "Bringing hope to famewhores everywhere." So, to get that particular combination, you would enter the following into the admin console:

moodtheme_create "American Idol" "Bringing hope to famewhores everywhere"

This will give you a mood theme ID number.
4. Open mood.txt. Search for "12345" and replace it with the unique mood theme ID you just got through the LJ console. Search for "http://www.yourserver.com/" and replace it with the path to your icons. Remember to include the final slash.
5. Copy the altered contents of mood.txt and paste it into the admin console. Hit "execute."
6. Your custom mood theme is now available for selection. Go to the Customize Style page (while logged in), then click on the "Look and Feel" tab. Go to the drop-down menu under the "Mood Icons" title. Choose the custom set you just made; it'll be at the bottom of the list. At the bottom of the page, choose "save changes."

That's it!

3. Paste your edited list into the console and hit "execute."
4. Your custom mood theme is now available for selection. Go to the Customize Style page (while logged in), then click on the "Look and Feel" tab. Go to the drop-down menu under the "Mood Icons" title. Choose the custom set you just made; it'll be at the bottom of the list. At the bottom of the page, choose "save changes."
5. If you notice problems with your mood theme not showing up, please don't contact me if you see it's just a server not responding. (As opposed to a picture being deleted.) I don't have control over that server beyond sending them a service request, and I'll have already done so.

Brushes: Calligraphy Strokes & Splatters

Hand-drawn calligraphy strokes, all 100x100, make up the first set. The second's splatter images are offered in both 100x100 and 200x200, so you can move around the cursor a little and find the perfect area of the brush to use.

Wallpaper-sized Textures

This is rather an odd texture post, but oh well. Behind the cut are five desktop wallpaper-sized textures (1024 x 768) that I just whipped up. Uses could be found for all kinds of stuff: sliced up and/or shrunk down for icons, applied as effects layers for headers, whatever. Click on the thumbnail images to get the full version of each image.

If you take any, please comment and credit somewhere. I'm not picky about where, I just like for people to be able to find the originals if they like what you've done with what you've taken. These textures are 100% available for use in making other textures / bases. If you want to cut them all up and insert text and brushwork and whatever, feel free.

Since people seemed to like last night's texture sets, I went ahead and did another round. This post includes six sets of textures made from rusted surfaces. You can either snag the individual textures you like or download zipped sets. I've put together 8 sets of icon textures, grouped by color. I'm displaying each on its own, so you can grab only those which you like, and have also thrown them into zip files. If you're curious as to where I get the images, brushes, and other aspects that go into icon-making, this is the full list. Please don't ask to be pointed to a specific post by anyone to find one brush set in particular; I don't keep that information, I just credit the makers as they wish. Most of them will have their brushes, etc. on their website, in their memories, or linked somewhere from their main journal.

Screencap Sources - The sources of the screencaps, magazine scans, and other graphics that serve as bases for my icons
Stock Images - Non-fandom images that can be used to enhance projects, or serve as bases all on their own. The listed sites provide royalty-free images
Brushes - The Photoshop (.abr) brushes I use. Those sized for icons and those sized to be used on much larger projects are all listed
Textures and Gradients - These provide extra depth and dimension to icons. Although textures can be slapped down on icons unaltered, I find it much more useful to adjust them for each individual icon
Actions - The Photoshop (.atn) actions I find useful. Again: although these can be used without any further alteration, it's a good idea to customize the effect you see after each use, as a bit of tweaking almost always gets it just right

Brushes

"You sure have a lot of brush sources!" Yes, I do. I no longer use 90% of the brushes I've downloaded. However, I'm not positive if any of the older icons I still display use brushes which I have since deleted. Rather than take the chance of not giving credit where it's due, I simply list everything. Those brushes I frequently use have their link accompanied by an asterisk.

State Landscapes

Those "I Love [City]" icons I did last year were popular, so here's a similar set I've been working on off and on for a while. (It takes a long to make yourself happy with a matching set this size.) I really liked the description made of the city icons that named them little postcards, so I did the same thing with the 50 states. There are clean "postcard" versions and ones with the name of the state. All of those are in the Amazing Race's font.
