2nd Minneapolis Shooting: Family, Neighbors, and Participants Dispute DHS Account of What Happened
A federal immigration enforcement officer fired his weapon and shot an adult male Wednesday night (Jan. 14) in the 600 block of 24th Avenue North in Minneapolis. The City of Minneapolis publicly acknowledged the shooting and location, and local reporting confirms the man was shot in the leg, followed by a fast-forming street confrontation between residents/protesters and heavily equipped federal officers.
Everything beyond that basic skeleton immediately became contested — because DHS issued a highly detailed, highly interpretive narrative within hours, while the victim’s family and neighbors described something meaningfully different.
The DHS narrative (what DHS wants the public to believe)
DHS claims the man shot was the target of a “targeted traffic stop,” that he fled in a car, crashed, ran, and then fought an officer, after which two other people emerged and “ambushed” the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle, forcing “defensive shots.” DHS goes further, explicitly assigning political blame to Gov. Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey and citing a dramatic percentage increase in assaults on federal officers.
That’s the official story. But it is still — at this moment — largely an official claim.
The counter-narrative (family + neighbors + livestream video)
The Washington Post reports that family members, neighbors, and at least two Facebook Live videos point to a different version, one where the pivotal moment happens at the front door, not in a street scuffle after a car chase.
Key disputed points:
Where the shooting happened
DHS: street pursuit → ground struggle → “ambush.”
Family / neighbors / video (WaPo): the shot is described as occurring at the home’s doorway, as a door is closing. That’s a major factual divergence because it’s the kind of detail that should be quickly testable via physical evidence (shell casing location, bullet path, doorframe damage, exterior cameras).
Who was being pursued
DHS: the man shot is the fleeing traffic-stop target.
Family / participants (WaPo): the person ICE was after may have been a housemate, with the man who was shot becoming involved at the door. If true, this changes the entire legal and moral posture of the incident — from “fleeing suspect” to “third party at residence.”
The “three-person ambush” with shovel/broom
DHS: claims a coordinated three-person assault with improvised weapons.
Family / neighbors / video (WaPo): their accounts don’t track the “ambush” framing, and the Post notes DHS has not publicly produced evidence to substantiate that sequence yet. This is the claim most in need of corroboration because it’s also the claim doing the most work to justify the shooting.
What happened immediately after the shot
There’s more overlap here: accounts converge that people retreated inside and there was a heavy federal response at the scene, followed by escalating street tensions. Local reporting and community outlets describe chemical agents/flash-bang style crowd control as the scene grew chaotic.
What seems most credible right now (and why)
In breaking news, “credible” often means most checkable:
The location (600 block of 24th Ave N) is already anchored by city acknowledgment and local reporting.
The doorway-vs-street dispute is unusually verifiable:
If the shooting occurred at/near a door, physical evidence and neighborhood video should show it quickly.
If it occurred during a struggle in the street, that should also leave a different, visible evidentiary trail.
The “ambush” claim is, by contrast, a conclusion (and a politically loaded one) more than a neutral fact. It may end up being true — but it is the sort of claim responsible agencies normally support with footage, charging documents, or at least a basic evidentiary description.
What is likely verifiable in the coming days
If this story is going to resolve into something knowable, it will do so through a handful of artifacts:
Body-worn camera / dash cam existence and activation
Even if footage isn’t released immediately, whether cameras existed and were on usually becomes known.
Charging documents / affidavits
If prosecutors file charges (against anyone), affidavits tend to lock in a claimed timeline under penalty of perjury.
911 call logs and dispatch records
Especially if neighbors were live-streaming and calling, there should be timestamped records.
Scene evidence
Casing locations, visible impacts, doorframe/window damage, and neighborhood security footage.
Independent local reporting as the standoff/protests are documented
Community outlets (not just national press) often surface the first true independent witness accounts and video.
Why DHS’s statement is part of the story
Even if DHS ends up being “right” on core facts, the posture matters: the statement did not simply announce a shooting and promise review — it declared motive, declared guilt, declared justification, and assigned political blame immediately.
That’s not just messaging. It’s narrative capture — before the public sees evidence.
In 2026 America, we are all being asked to accept a finished story within hours — often written by the very agencies involved. Here's the source list for this one, which I once again failed to put in the newsletter. It's in the online version.

Thanks for your careful analysis of what happened. We need to establish truth, something in my view the Dump administration has never valued. We also need justice, not alone for the families affected, but equally crucial for our community, state and nation.
From my biased point of view, Trump, Noem, and their thugs should return to Russia, and get out of Minnesota ... before we decide to join up with a free country like Canada.
Meanwhile, just the facts and justice.
