Lukas walks into his home, which he shares with Bastian, with the biggest smile he could master. It had been days since the pair had seen each other due to Bastian being away at a training camp to regain his fitness after he broke his ankle. Bastian had been due home a couple of hours earlier and nothing could make Lukas’ smile falter at the thought of his boyfriend waiting for him.

Quickly dropping his bag and taking off his jacket, Lukas ran from room to room trying to discover where Bastian was. His smile reduced in size when he could not spot the Bavarian anywhere, it hurt Lukas to think that Bastian was not waiting for him but he was still so happy that Bastian was back that he just took it in his stride and headed to the kitchen.

Deciding that he would have to wait a bit longer, Lukas busied himself in making a meal for the pair to celebrate Bastian’s return to Munich.

----

It took another few hours before Lukas heard the door open. Putting his gigantic smile back in place he struggled to stop himself from running towards the door. Edging around the kitchen doorway, Lukas took a deep breath before he looked up at the figure in the hallway.

“Oh” Lukas mumbled disappointment clear in his voice as stood in front of him was not Bastian Schweinsteiger but their National teammate Michael Ballack.

“Hey Poldi, I didn’t mean to barge in here. I just wanted to see how you were doing” Michael said with a hint of sadness.

“Its okay Micha, I just thought you were Basti.” Lukas replied, returning his smile to his lips and giving a welcoming hug to the man in front of him like they have always done.

“He hasn’t been here yet?” Michael asked confusion ever dent in his voice as he let Lukas pull out of the hug.

Lukas looked at Michael studying him trying to figure out what had caused Micha’s confusion. “No he hasn’t, why? Do you know where he is?”

Michael was in two minds about what to say to the youngster, wanting like he had for years to protect him “Yes I know where he is.”

“Well where is he then? Was there some complication with his recovery?” Even as the words left his mouth Lukas thought it odd as Bastian would have called and told him if that the case, so when he Michael just shook his head, he didn’t know whether to be relieved or more confused. “Is he planning a surprise or something then?” Lukas asked getting his hopes up but yet again having them dashed with the shake of Michael’s head. “Has he gone out with some of the Bayern lads?” only to be greeted with yet another shake of the head. “So where then?”

“He’s at my place.” But before Lukas could interrupt he continued. “It’s over Poldi, he’s not coming back”

“W.. What?” Lukas looked shocked, not understanding what Michael was saying.

Michael pulled the youngster into another hug, and held him close. “He came over this morning saying that he needed a place to crash and didn’t know where else to turn. I thought you two had fallen out or something, that’s why I came over to see how you were holding up but I didn’t realise that he had not even seen you. I’m so sorry for having to tell you all this” He finished wrapping his arms tighter around his team mate, and letting Lukas bury his head into his chest.

----

It took a while before Lukas pulled out of Michael’s arms, wiping his hand across his eyes to get rid of the last of the tears he didn’t want Michael to see. “I’m sorry Micha, I didn’t mean to use you as a human pillow” Lukas said as he noticed the wet patch on Michael’s shirt.

“Its Okay, I would have been more worried about you if you weren’t upset about this. Are you going to talk to Basti?”

Lukas sighed knowing what Micha was going to ask sooner rather than later, he walked into the kitchen where the meal he had made earlier for himself and Basti. “I don’t think so, if he wants to talk then he knows where to find me but if he’s going to leave without even saying anything to me then I’m not going to make the effort with him.” Lukas picked up the plates that held the starter and dumped them in the bin, followed by the plates with the main course and dessert, Michael just stood and watched from the doorway.

“You don’t have to throw all that away.” Michael commented as he waited patiently on the break out of emotion he knew Lukas would show eventually.

“Well Bastian’s not going to eat it so what use is it?” Lukas replied as he made his way to the bedroom with Michael following after him.

Opening the wardrobe door, Lukas pulled out a travel bag before started to yank out all of Bastian’s belongings and throwing them in the bag.

Michael just watched on knowing that Lukas would be too stubborn to listen to anything he had to say. It wasn’t until Lukas zipped up the bag and threw it at him that Michael felt it time to intervene. Putting the bag down on the floor, Michael tried to reach out to Lukas put the Polish born striker pulled away.

“Give that to him when you go home, I doubt he’ll come here to pick it up himself.”

“Why don’t you come with me? To talk to him and figure out what the hell is going on” Micha was trying desperately to get Lukas to try and do anything but give up on his relationship with Bastian. It was obvious to see just how much the two young German stars loved each other, a love that not many managed to feel in their lifetimes, and Michael wasn’t about to let the two of them give up without a word.

Lukas just looked at Micha like he had lost him mind. “If I thought he would talk to me I would have called him but it won’t make a difference. Why should I bother when he isn’t considerate enough to say that it’s over.”

“Lukas”

“No Micha, don’t try and defend him”

“Lukas I’m not”

“Yes you are, you’ve always tried to make sure that me and him are still laughing together but this time nothing you say is gonna make a difference.”

“Lukas just listen to me”

“No! Not unless you stop talking about Bastian. If you can’t do that then I think you should leave”

“Lukas …” Micha tried again but Lukas just ignored him and pointed at the door. Sighing in defeat, Micha took the hint and headed towards the door “I’ll leave but I’m still going to make sure you two talk about whatever is that’s happened” And with that he left.

Lukas watched as the door shut closed before letting the tears fall freely from his eyes. Once he was sure Micha wasn’t coming back, Lukas locked the front door before headed to one of the Kitchen cupboards where he pulled out a bottle of vodka.

Settling himself on the sofa he opened the bottle and started gulping down the stuff as he hoped so desperately that he could think of anything but the pain Bastian had caused him. He drunk more and more, letting the tears fall until he let the blackness of unconsciousness take him.

----

In the days after, Lukas had been swimming in and out of consciousness, spending his days either drinking and ignoring people calling and knocking on his door, or staring into darkness. Bastian leaving had taking more of a toll on him than he was willing to let anyone see. The only contact he had made being a phone call to his club saying he was too sick to make it to training, a small blessing that it was still just pre-season training.

Michael had come by every day shouting through the door when Lukas didn’t answer, in hopes of catching a glimpse of the fallen youngster, only to be left disappointed every time. Word had spread around the team about Bastian no longer living with Lukas, so a few of his teammates had been by but after receiving no answer they turned away with the promise of coming back later. But the one person Lukas wanted to see didn’t make an appearance and was not even mentioned by any of his visitors.

The apartment was a mess, cans and bottles of alcohol littering the living room, with many other things smashed up on the floor. The pitfall of staying in being that he kept spotting items of Bastian’s that he had missed when gathering up his stuff to give to Michael, many of the items having been thrown at the wall and smashing upon impact. Photos of the pair lie torn on the floor, scrunching under his feet every time Lukas gets up to grab the next bottle of alcohol.

Lukas had started to crave seeing Bastian again but every time Lukas made it in front of a mirror to see the state of himself, he refused to seek out the man that had always been his go to guy in his time of need, only to be causing just as much pain as he had stopped many times in the past. He wouldn’t make first contact even if it meant he became just a shadow of himself.

-----

It was a week and a half after Michael had last talked to Lukas, that he decided drastic action was needed. He had been messaging many of the national teammates and Lukas’ teammate to see if he had talked to anyone, but all of the said the same thing “No he didn’t answer the door”.

Bastian had been sleeping in his guest room, he was acting like his normal self almost like nothing was happening, but the moment Lukas’ name was mention, he would get up and leave the room, not wanting anyone to see just how badly he felt for doing all this to his now ex.
Bastian started doing light training at Bayern and everyday Micha gave him a lift home, but this time they started heading out in a different direction causing Bastian to reach a level of confusion before he realised that they were driving towards the apartment he shared with Lukas.

“He hasn’t spoken to anyone days, you told me that you spoke to him before you turned up at my door the other week but you didn’t did you”

“I.. I wanted to but when I reached the front door, I just couldn’t face seeing his hurt” Bastian put his head in his hands knowing that was a poor excuse for what he had caused.

“So you thought he would find it easier being told him 5 year relationship was over from someone else who couldn’t even give him a reason for the break up?”

“I know what I did was harsh on him, I wanted to give him a few days before I faced him but I was a coward, I still am.”

“Basti I know you were scared of how he would react but you needed to have done it face to face. I can’t promise that talking to him will be easy but he’s in pain and you have to try because he doesn’t want to be around anyone and you have been the one he always turns to when he hurts, except this time he hasn’t even got you so I don’t know how he is coping if he is coping.”

Micha pulled up outside the apartment and waited for Bastian to get out, before he drove away making sure that Bastian had no way of getting to his place without having spoken to Lukas first.

----

Bastian watched Michael drive away, stopping in front of the door, he took a deep breath and raised his hand to knock. He felt weird knocking on his own front door but his key was packed away in one of his bags back at Michaels.

After a few minutes of no answer, Bastian knocked again. “Lukas you in there” He shouted hoping that his voice wouldn’t scare Lukas away. It took a while but finally Bastian heard movement inside the house and slowly the front door started to open revealing a scruffy looking Lukas, Bastian’s heart dropped at the sight.

“What do you want?” Lukas’ voice was gruff with non-use.

“Can I come in?”

“It’s still your house even if you don’t live here” Lukas stated as he walked away from the door leaving Bastian to let himself in.
Bastian walked through the door and couldn’t help but notice the state of the house it was a complete mess, with bottles everywhere. Lukas had settled himself back onto the sofa, making sure to lay out across the whole thing so there was no space for Bastian to sit next to him. Picking up the bottle he had been drinking before being disturbed, he tried to take a sip only to find the bottle pulled out of his hand and Bastian perching on the very edge of the sofa next to Lukas’ legs.

“Why are you doing this to yourself Lukas?”

“Now you care about me? If you did you would have come here sooner” Lukas tried reaching for his bottle again but Bastian held it further out of reach.

“I’m sorry Lukas, truly I am. I never wanted you to cease contact with everyone and drink yourself into a stupor

”So what did you want? For me to pretend that everything is just perfect? To just pretend that you haven’t ripped by heart to shreds?”

“I wanted to say it in person but I knew if I saw you that I wouldn’t be able to, that smile of yours has always talked me into agreeing with you.”

“So what you’re saying is that we were only together because I smiled at you? That you didn’t want to be together for the past FIVE YEARS? That you only agreed cause you couldn’t say no? Did you only say you loved me because you felt you had no choice?”

“No Lukas, that is not what I meant. I always loved you and I still do but …”

But Lukas interrupted him before he could continue “So why did you leave me then? I don’t know what hurts worst the fact that you got Micha to tell me you had left me or that I still don’t know why you left me.”

“If you didn’t let me finish” Lukas just gave him a pointed glare “I did a lot of thinking while I was away, when I heard you were moving clubs I remembered how hard it was last time you moved clubs and I thought it would be easier on both of us if we went back to being friends until you were settled and then if you wanted we could pick up where we left off.”

Lukas was in shock from this latest revelation “Wait WHAT? You thought I was leaving? I’m not going anywhere Basti and I if I was I would have told you about it.  Where did you get the idea that I was leaving from?”

“It was all over the news, they made it seem like a done deal that you were moving to London.”

“I’m not going anywhere, not London and not to any other club in Germany. Arsenal have enquired into my status but I turned them down saying that I wanted at least another year in the Bundesliga before I thought about my future.”

“So you’re definitely not leaving?” Bastian looked hopeful at the news and even dared to let a smile grace his lips.

“No I’m not. So you’re telling me you’ve put me through hell for no reason except for meaningless transfer gossip? What do you take me for Basti? I’ve always told you about my transfer offers so that we together could decide whats best for us” Lukas face showed nothing but betrayal as he waited for Bastian to justify it all.

Bastian reached out with his hand to touch Lukas’ chin, the striker tried to flinch away but Bastian wouldn’t give up. He held Lukas’ chin firm and leaned forward so that their foreheads were rested against each other. Bastian closed his eyes and wished that he had rung up Lukas before he made the decision to let him go.

“I know that I screwed up everything that we worked so hard to make and I know that I can never take that back, but do you think that there is any hope for us to return to what we had, I understand that it wouldn’t be an easy route but I want to do everything I can to make it up to you.”

“Basti”

“Please Lukas, I don’t think I can walk away after all of this trouble I have caused you but I don’t want to make this any worse beforehand.”

“Basti, you’ve hurt me so much recently but I still love you but if we do this you can’t just stay because you feel guilty , it has to be because you want to make it up”

“I do want to make it up Lukas, I love you so so much and I will do whatever it takes to make this right. I promise you that I will never again hurt you, never ever”

Lukas took a deep breath before he wrapped his arms around Bastian’s shoulders and turned his head to rest in the crook of Bastian’s neck. He felt Bastian wraps his arms around Lukas waist, pulling him against his body.

“Okay Basti, We can start again”
