„Robert is my true Guru when it comes to high-altitude medicine—an authority and a professional whose opinions, advice, and insights I often quote in the lectures I give, as well as in my books.
We first met years ago in the Himalayas, where I had the opportunity to observe Robert’s work as an expedition doctor. Later, I participated in his training courses on multiple occasions. He has also played a role in my expeditions to eight-thousanders, helping me assemble my medical kit and advising me on how to handle emergency situations. Warm regards.”
~ Monika Witkowska
"If you plan to spend time in the high mountains, it is truly worth taking a professional course in high-altitude medicine.
For me, the absolute guru in this field is Dr. Robert Szymczak from MedEverest – a physician and Himalayan climber, and a person who has played an incredibly important role in my life and has always been ready to help.
You will not find such a depth of knowledge – and, most importantly, such an outstanding way of sharing it – anywhere else."
~ Miłka Raulin
"I met Robert Szymczak in 2010 during the Elbrus Race project. [...] Robert proved to be an extremely professional doctor, deeply engaged in the mountain environment.[...] He was a key pillar of the team, having conquered three eight-thousanders [...]. He is someone who genuinely influenced the safety and functioning of entire expeditions.
I know very few people who pursue high-altitude topics with such passion and consistency – from acclimatization and human physiology in extreme conditions to the illnesses that occur in high mountains. [...] Robert has supported our projects remotely for years. [...] having him on call gives us a tremendous sense of security.
Robert also developed the composition and usage instructions for professional expedition medical kits [...] it is better to have Robert on the other end of the phone than to rely on any doctor physically present on the expedition. I have enormous respect for his knowledge, experience, and the work he has done for the mountaineering community."
~ Andrzej Bargiel
"Since 2019, I have relied on Robert’s knowledge and support while planning my high-altitude expeditions. His practical training helped me organize and deepen my understanding of high-altitude first aid. His consultations were crucial during my preparations for expeditions to Lenin Peak, Khan Tengri, and several climbs on Aconcagua – both independently and while guiding clients.
Being able to stay in contact with Robert during expeditions also helped me quickly identify and manage health problems among my team members. I highly recommend working with Robert and benefiting from his extensive knowledge and experience."
~ Łukasz Supergan
"Dr. Robert Szymczak accompanied me on two expeditions in the Himalayas. He prepared the medical equipment and acted as a consultant, sharing his extensive knowledge of high-altitude medicine.
Robert is capable of preparing any team—both practically and theoretically—for operations in high-altitude environments.
I highly recommend him."
~ Krzysztof Wielicki
"Working with Medeverest is, above all, a guarantee of complete safety in the mountains, something I have personally experienced, having relied on Robert’s services multiple times during my expeditions. As a physician and an 8000-meter peak climber, Robert possesses unique, practical knowledge that makes him an exceptionally credible expert – he not only teaches procedures but also fully understands how they function in the most extreme conditions on Earth. Thanks to his dedication, even complex medical assistance becomes straightforward, effective, and possible to provide remotely.
I wholeheartedly recommend Medeverest to anyone seeking safety and professionalism in medical matters during their expeditions!"
~ Marcin Miotk
"I read and watch with great interest the highly professional materials prepared by MedEverest regarding training, preparation, and conduct in the mountains, especially in areas where operating at high altitude is required.
Dr. Robert Szymczak presents his knowledge in a very accessible way, as he gained it through numerous successful expeditions, both as a participant and as an expedition doctor. His advice has undoubtedly saved the health—and possibly even the lives—of many participants.
I am grateful for this on behalf of myself and other mountain enthusiasts.. Best regards."
~ Ryszard Pawłowski

HIGH-ALTITUDE MEDICAL
Handbook
High-altitude medicine is the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health and life threats arising from the environmental conditions in high mountains. The environmental conditions at extreme altitudes (>5500m) and in the death zone (>7500m) are not friendly to life! Rocks, ice, snow, frost, and lack of oxygen are not an oasis teeming with life!

ROBERT SZYMCZAK
I am a physician, a specialist in Emergency Medicine, and a habilitated doctor of medical and health sciences. I lecture in Emergency Medicine at the Department of Emergency and Disaster Medicine, Medical University of Gdańsk, and in High-Altitude and Expedition Medicine at the Postgraduate Medical Education Center, Jagiellonian University Medical College. I work as a physician with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in Gdańsk (Poland).
I have taken part in high-altitude expeditions as a doctor and climber, including ascents of Mont Blanc, Mount Elbrus, Pik Lenin, Khan Tengri, Passu Sar, Island Peak, Lobuche East, Nanga Parbat, Dhaulagiri, Broad Peak, and Mount Everest.
As a climbing physician, I participated in three Polish national winter expeditions: Nanga Parbat (8125 m) in 2006–2007, and Broad Peak (8047 m) twice, in 2008–2009 and 2010–2011. I reached the summits of three eight-thousanders: Dhaulagiri (8167 m) in 2008, Nanga Parbat (8125 m) in 2010, and Mount Everest (8848 m) in 2012.
In 2008, for my participation in an international rescue operation on Annapurna to save the Spanish Himalayan climber Iñaki Ochoa de Olza, I was awarded the Gold Medal for Meritorious Service to Sport (Medalla al Mérito Deportivo).
I conducted training courses for the Polish national mountaineering team.
I have prepared medical support (consultations, training, and expedition medical kits) for participants of more than 100 expeditions, including Polish national expeditions to Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Lhotse, Makalu, Manaslu, Broad Peak Middle, and K2.
I am a co-founder of Polish Society of Mountain Medicine and Rescue. I founded MedEverest in 2004. The mission of MedEverest is education in mountain medicine and the hazards of high mountains. MedEverest covers all medical aspects of staying at high altitude—from online and field training, through medical consultations before, during, and after expeditions, to organizing medical support for treks and high-altitude expeditions.

HIGH-ALTITUDE MEDICINE
MedEverest
Invest in Knowledge and Your Health – Stay Safe in the Mountains.
The time invested in understanding the hazards of high mountains and methods to cope with them will save you a lot of trouble, stress, nerves, and frustration in the mountains.
In high-altitude wilderness, you cannot rely on rescue services. In many high-altitude areas, there are no rescue services. Where they do exist, the time it takes to reach an injured person, for whom every second is precious, should be counted in days. In situations threatening health and life, you unfortunately have to be self-sufficient.
Are you prepared for it?
If not, begin your medical preparation today with the support of an experienced high-altitude physician.
