Moreso than the other Endless or the Furies, it's Lucifer that Morpheus is afraid to face on unequal footing in the series: "The Sandman." Only his father and niece, both possessing of the power of the judeochristian god Yahweh, are stronger, and only his brother Michael and his consort Mazikeen are equal in strength.

He is possessed of the Fire of Creation, which allows him to create or manipulate nearly anything out of whatever material is already present; it's basically alchemy without equivalent exchange, with no drawback save that he can't create new matter, only shift and twist it into different forms or destroy it outright, wiping it from existence. He can also use the Fire of Creation as a literal flame, channeling the energy of every sun in the universe to create fireballs, wrap himself in flame, create columns of fire, etc, etc. They're hot enough / strong to kill anything that isn't as strong as Lucifer himself, and powerful enough to harm other fire-based demons of hell besides. He's also pretty much immune to any kind of fire-based attack, too.

He's also got a billion plus years of occult knowledge under his belt, which allows him to to do such things as: teleport using "doorways", create protective circles, cause others to explode, summon other demons, imbue others with a soul, etc, etc. With a little and a little planning, there's just really nothing he can't do with it.

For all of his power, however, Lucifer isn't the type to actually go around using his abilities unless he needs to. He most certainly doesn't erase people from reality just because, and much rather prefers to scheme and plot than to get his hands dirty.

Also, despite being immortal, he can be harmed by other demonic or angelic beings / weapons / abilities; just don't expect it to stick for long unless you're omgwtfx powerful.

✖ Family: YMMV/Yahweh/God (father), The Archangel Michael (brother), Elaine Belloc (niece), Mazikeen of the Nephilim (consort).

][ V i s u a l ][

╬ Has a diagonal scar running down from his right temple, across the bridge of his nose, to the top of his left cheek.
╬ Predominately wears black of white suits and generally has a very fine, high-end taste in clothing.
╬ His wings are alternatively white, smokey gray, black, or leathery like a bat's. However, he does have certain limitations. Simply put, he cannot create something out of nothing. He needs existing matter (and where that is unavailable, the Demiurgic power of the archangel Michael) to provide the foundation for him to shape.

Look here for a better explanation.

Weapons: None.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Once upon a time, there was a series of experiments called “Creation.” These experiments included the birth of you and I, and the propagation of every other single animate and inanimate object in the known and unknown multiverse, and would last some six-odd quintillion years before its omnipotent creator would decide that it was bored, pack up, close shop, and call it quits. This cycle of creation and meaningless abandonment would then continue until, one fine day, the Creator – known to some a God, or Allah, Yahweh – sat down and decided that, hey, what fun is there in creating life if it doesn’t really end up doing anything?

Enter the archangels Lucifer and Michael, each created before the dawn of time so that they would be mirror opposites of one another, with Michael tasked to create matter, and Lucifer to shape it. Yahweh then created a heavenly host to see to the finer needs of the Creation, and, for a time, it was good. Michael worked to make his father’s plans come alive, and Lucifer spent his time with the host, forever training them to better uphold the will of God.

Then, years or centuries latter, came the first murder in paradise, and the eventual showing of Yahweh’s “tolerance” to what should and should not happen in its perfect creation. Here is where we see the rift between father and son begin, and where we see Lucifer – the brightest of archangels, who walks in the “dark places” of the universe simply to “test himself” – first question his father’s will.

“This is not just,” he says. “This is not right.”

And so the seed of dissent is sown.

Soon after this, or perhaps sometime much, much later, comes the creation of man, and with it, the birth of free choice and the exile of Lilith, the first wife of Adam. It is here, again, where Lucifer begins to question his purpose, and actually considers killing God so that he may walk his own path. After being asked by the Archangel Gabriel to put an end to Lilith’s consorting with demons, Lucifer instead finds himself “seduced” by the numerous intellectual conversations the woman offers him every time they meet, and, in an act of mercy, lets the woman and her kin live. This leads to the eventual murder of the angel Ibriel, who, like Lucifer, was also seduced from his task of ending Lilith’s consorting, albeit in a more…physical manner. When Gabriel catches wind of this, he declares that the lives of the two Lilim – Lilith’s children, Mazikeen and Briadach, who feel as if Gabriel’s decision to exile their people from the City they themselves have built is unjust – are forfeit, and decides to have executed.

Lucifer, however, has other ideas. After using a small display of power to put all attention on himself, the Morningstar argues that Gabriel’s virtue is “Not content unless it can intimidate and enslave the virtue of others,” and continues to berate and demean Gabriel before the rest of the Host, even when Gabriel threatens that: “God will judge between us.” It is only at this point that Michael, Lucifer’s brother, intervenes, and says the phrase that basically causes Lucifer to rebel.

“Justice is my father’s prerogative. The rest of us…the rest of us can only do what we think is right.”

Cue all those interesting bits of the Bible regarding Lucifer’s renouncement of Yahweh and his angelic name of Samael, along with really descriptive parts detailing how nearly one-third of angelic host “fell” with him when the archangel was cast out of heaven. Then fast-forward a couple hundred million years, pause for intermission, inject more doses of encroaching ennui than even the most prolific Goth poet could muster afterwards, and we find that ol’ Lucifer is, well, still unhappy with his lot and life. The only difference now is that he’s unhappy, has about a million year’s worth of experience acting out Machiavellian plots against Hell’s best manipulators, and is willing to give up his own kingdom to walk his own path again -- which he does. Much to the chagrin of everyone still living there.

During the Sandman, Lucifer is both friend and foe to the series' eponymous character: after Dream escapes being imprisoned by a group of humans, he finds that one of his items of power -- his helmet -- has somehow found its way down to hell, and that he must confront the entire host of Hell and its master, Lucifer, to get it back.

Here, we find that Lucifer no longer controls Hell by himself -- he is, in fact, part of a triumvirate, and must confer with two other lords -- Beelzebub and Azazel -- to make any decision regarding anything that happens in Hell itself. Far from being powerless because of this, however, Lucifer agrees to "help" Dream recover his stolen helmet, so long as he can point out which demon in all of Hell's assembled host took it.

Dream does so using his magical pouch of sand and then challenges the demon, Chronozon, for ownership due to him being outside of Lucifer's sphere of influence. Lucifer and the rest of the Triumvirate agree, and watch Chronozon lose to Dream; this lose, however, prompts Lucifer to remind Dream that he did not agree to let him go, simply that he would help.

To this, Dream answers: "What is Hell, save for those who dream of Heaven?"

After such a ~magnificent~ schooling, Lucifer vows to kill Dream, leaving Morpheus to take care of the Key to Hell once he abdicates his throne some issues later. This event, I feel, is one of the larger things that really helps Desire to set up the Furies to kill his brother, simply because, well, the chaos it brings to Dream's door-step ultimately leads to two things Lucifer think are fairly amusing: the angels Dumah and Remiel become the new caretakers of Hell, and Dream is forced, rather blatantly, to come to terms that he is only one of the Endless because he chooses to be, and not because he must.

After this, Lucifer goes on living in California with the demon Mazikeen, and opens a nightclub called "The Lux."

In his eponymous series, Lucifer basically plans to both leave the Creation of his Father -- Creation here, meaning the multiverse -- while also becoming God-like so that he can give his own try at creating the universe. Through his journey, he finds out that he and his brother, Michael, were both destined to either rise or fall, and that his father, Yahweh, made the Creation they are both part of simply to see which one of them would fall first. He also meets his niece -- Elaine Belloc -- and helps her to come to terms with her Godhood after his brother's death, giving her the Creation he made outside of Yahweh's so that she could see what it was like to have omnipotence and omniscience while still retaining a human soul.

Like his role in the Sandman, Lucifer is both hero and villain in this series: he sets into motion the events that cause the end of the world -- ie: making a Creation so close to Yahweh's causes the two to try and destroy each other -- and eventually ends up saving everything and every one in a way only he can, by killing his brother and turning his niece into a God-like being with his brother's fleeing power.

Thereafter, he leaves Yahweh's creation for a place called the Void, imbuing Mazikeen with his "Morningstar" title just before he goes, his future uncertain to everyone but himself.

Point in Canon: Post-canon, after leaving Yahweh's Creation to travel into the great wide expanse of...whatever lies outside of it. Just before this, he saved all of Creation from being destroyed by the Fenrir Wolf, and decided to try and find his own place in the universe outside of his Father's influence thereafter. When he leaves, he imbues his consort -- Mazikeen -- with his title and position as the Morningstar of his Father's creation, leaving it without so much as looking back.

Character Personality: At his core, Lucifer is a being who believed in ultimate justice, ultimate fairness, and absolute love. He was God’s finest creation, loved and admired by all, and he went about his duties as any good son should: quick and unquestioning, doing everything that was asked of him with a calm, nearly-unflappable amicability that nothing could seemingly break down.

The keyword here, unfortunately, would be seemingly.

Let me explain: at the dawn of creation, Yahweh did not explain why he needed his angels and archangels to do what he asked of them. They were simply expected to carry out their tasks, and to train, and to be the best, never questioning where Yahweh had gone or why he was so invested in his newest project. This led quite a few of the angels to their own devices, which, in turn, is where Lucifer met “The Darkness,” and began to question himself. Things get even worse when one of his angelic brethren murders the other angel he had been working with, which causes Yahweh to annihilate said angel for committing a Cardinal Sin, in effect erasing him from reality. During this, Lucifer stares on, mouth agape, wondering what exactly was just in that kind of thing when all that the angel was, after all, was what Yahweh made him out to be.

Here is where Lucifer basically begins to doubt God, and where we see him step away from seeing Yahweh as perfect. Years later, the fact is further compounded when Lucifer is tasked to kill Lilith, and instead lets her live due to how Lilith can actually give him what he needs at the moment: intelligent conversation that doesn’t revolve around Yahweh and everything He is, which leads to more questions, more doubting, and more of Lucifer returning to Lilith for answers. This cycle, I suppose, is what “enlightens” Lucifer, forcing him to look at everything that’s going on around him with a more critical eye.

This, of course, leads to Lucifer’s little revolt. Using the outcome of another unjustly punished murder – which involved Mazikeen and her brother killing their angelic father for leaving them to rot – he basically tells all of the angels gathered that he is leaving, and that anyone who wants to follow him is welcome to, which clues us in to one of Lucifer’s defining traits: he values personal freedom and justice above everything else. Never mind the fact that his leaving will shatter the ranks of the angelic armies, and never mind the fact that Yahweh must react to his son disobeying him so blatantly: even after the fact, Lucifer is still willingly to “cut a deal” with God and be made ruler of hell so long as he is no longer beneath Yahweh’s thumb. It’s all that matters to him, really; as long as he can continue to perceive himself as being “in power” or “in charge” of everything he does, he’s willing to go so far as to believe in a false freedom. And for a time, as deluded as it sounds, he’s happy with it. The scheming, the killing, the strange fetishes for rhyming and changing shape to follow the times – it’s all something he partakes in, and he’s the best at what he does again. He enjoys himself.

Like his stint as one of God’s favored, however, it doesn’t last. And again, we’re shown that, even though he enjoys being evil, and even though he enjoys doing all of the things that Satan is known for, ultimately? He realizes he’s trapped and that he needs to escape the role Yahweh has given him yet again if he wants to be his own man. Cue him “closing down hell” and leaving to do his own thing separate from the rest of the angelic and demonic hierarchy. Here is really where Lucifer kind of. Well. Solidifies as what I like to call an “immortal playing at being mortal,” since he allows emotions like his love for music and his endearment to Mazikeen show through, where once before all he would be about is strength and showing how stoic he was in the face of all others. This version of Lucifer is the Lucifer that we see at the beginning of his eponymous series – he enjoys just existing even if it’s sort of boring at times, and he’s all for being his own man up until the things he has left behind come up and try to grab his attention again, which forces him to fall into old modes of behavior. Like scheming. And doing things that would put anyone pretending to follow Machiavelli to shame.

In short, Lucifer is a rather dynamic, and multi-faceted character that has many different sides to him. He cares, genuinely, about the people and things that fall under his sphere of influence, but he also doesn’t suffer fools or those who overstep his boundaries. He will also do whatever he can to continue to be his own man, even if it means breaking the heart of the one woman who loved him – to him, the only things that really matter are the things he can take and have for himself, rather than those that can be given to him.

That’s Lucifer in a nutshell -- If you could summarize such a complex character up in one word, that word would be “Machiavellian.” Everything that Lucifer does, he does for himself. Whether it’s becoming God of his own creation, or saving all of it from the Fenris Wolf, Lucifer will not act unless the outcome will benefit him in some way. He is a master planner, a master liar, charismatic to a fault, and, though fiercely loyal to those very few whom he considers “friends,” he will not hesitate to leave them all behind simply to walk his own path again. His tongue is sharp, his mind even sharper, and his patience is juuuust this side of endless as long as he isn’t dealing with men blinded by their own faith of ambitions. He has a flair for the fine arts, no love for crass individuals or unintelligent things, and even less love for the people standing in the way of whatever he wants.

Fear him or love him, everything about his title applies across the board.

Character Plans: Lucifer is always in the search of meaning and freedom in the Universe. He doesn't make deals often, he doesn't want souls, he doesn't hold a grudge against his father, and he doesn't want to take over the world; he just wants to explore, see Creation with his own eyes, and live out the rest of his days without being tied to any one person, place, or thing.

Appearance/PB: They say he looks like David Bowie in canon. Which is all sorts of hilarious.

Writing Samples

First Person Sample
...Women.

[ there's a ten minute stretch of silence ]

Once, when Los Angeles still meant something to me, a homeless man happened to stumble into my bar and demand that I join him to drink. As you will all know, this was not the most unique of experiences, all told, but bear with me: there is a point to the introduction.

The man's clothes were torn and frayed, here and there, and he reeked of filth and a previous night's attempt at drowning his sorrows at the bottom of a bottle. Far from being cruel, or arrogant, I offered him something stronger than what I smelt on him, and then sat back and watched as he slipped further and further into oblivion. It took less than hour.

When he left, he said nothing. Later that night, I would find that he had left two dollars on the table we had sat on, hidden beneath his last drink.

The next night, a businessman entered and did much of the same. We sat for some time discussing politics and the like, trading insights and pretending that we cared about what the other had to say until it came time for the two of us to part ways. He then handed me his card, and suggested that I attend a charity function his company was headlining, provided me with a date, time, and location all in the same breath.

I did not attend, of course, and it is quite easy to see why.

These preemptive summons, as if I've nothing better to do with my time, are beginning to grate on my nerves. Contrary to Marlowe's popular opinion, I do have other things to do than sit around and witness these tired little dramas humankind so fetishizes play themselves out.

Third Person Sample
"Is it not good, Brother?"

Contrary to popular belief, in the very beginning, there was no such thing as the “Word,” or "light", or anything else even remotely close to the concept of "time." Yahweh did not "speak", Samael and Michael did not question this lacking, and Creation -- devoid of life and light save for wherever Samael and Michael went -- stood more as a testament to the infinite sadness of a being capable of infinite loneliness than to the glory of the life it could create. Yahweh also did not wave its hand to create the hundred-billions of universes mortals would grow to inhabit, and did not look down from on high upon all of its creations and call them "Good" when everything was over in done with.

"Samael, I ask--"

-- No, Lucifer remembers that that had been Michael's glory, after a time, when the two of them had finished creating the very last star in the universe. It almost seemed ironic.

"It is very good, brother," Samael answers, looking to Michael as the star before them swirls to life, as vivid and whole as the very light they have imbued it with. "Just as every star before it has been."

Michael's lips twitched, then.

"But?"

The Morningstar shrugs. "It is just as every star before it."

Samael can tell that Michael does not understand the importance of this. He almost cuts him off when he speaks.

"What is the failure in being exactly as Yahweh intended them?"

Almost.

"There is none," Samael corrects, casting a glance back to the star before focusing again on Michael. "I simply wonder if Father would not like something a bit...different. To celebrate."

Michael's perks an eyebrow. "Such as?"

It happens faster than Samael can rightly understand. First, there is an absence -- the two brothers can feel it at all times, here, in these places where Yahweh is not present -- and then, with a slight pressure against the skin, there is a presence, and Samael is struggling to breathe.

"Such as what, Samael, o' Star of Morning?"

Lucifer remembers, trillions of years after the act, as he walks in the spaces between spaces, that whenever Yahweh "spoke," all the two brothers ever felt, back then, when motion was meaning, was pain. Infinite pain. The Bible speaks of a "Word," and that it is "fire" and "lightning" and "sound," but Lucifer knows that the voice of Yahweh is so much more -- is the word of Everything, more than just "The Word." Every truth, lie, and concept imaginable, and then every emotion and half-felt thought behind them: all of it slammed into you at once, crammed into "letters" that barely held themselves together at the seams.

It only made sense that he faltered, really.

"I had...planned to make it a surprise, Father."

Yahweh remained silent.

"We -- we have finished what you tasked us to do; what you created us for. I simply thought that the occasion should be marked." Samael turned to the star behind them, and gestured, fingers curling around the invisible threads of creation. "Something with a slight kick, as it were."

When the star went nova, and then supernova, Yahweh said nothing. Michael, however --

"You cannot do this!"

Samael looked to his brother, pausing just long enough for the insides of his palms to begin to itch.

"And why," Samael asked, stealing a glance back to Yahweh for -- something. Anything. And receiving nothing in return. "Is that, Michael?"

Michael had no answer. Samael stared.

To be spoken to -- for Yahweh never simply spoke, back then. It always needed direction -- by Yahweh was...something human or angelic language could not really express. And though there was no light; no sound; no spectrum of thought or physics for voice to travel through, when Yahweh spoke, Samael felt...compelled.

"Samael!"

To do what, he did not know. Actual words were ancillary to the process.

"Do it."

The star exploded, and a thought came to Samael, then, unbidden.

'God may simply be a trick of the light.'

There was no rational behind it, no reasoning that he could justify, but there, in the darkness between spaces, where even the warmth of creation could fade away with a gesture, it came to him, and took root. If He, the Bringer of Light, coudl also take it away, then --

Samael looked to Yahweh, and found his vision...wanting, almost hungry for more. Between Michael and himself, the both of them shining so brightly against each other as if they were two suns profaning against being held to the very concept of light, the dull colors and hues that made Yahweh up seemed to...only be a trick of the brightness of their skin, ephemeral, unreal, somehow intrinsically part of them, but also not.
'God may simply be a trick of the light.'

The thought terrified him almost as much as it exhilarated him.

permissions post

Because Lucifer is almost literally a godmod, I've set up a permission post so people can tell me what he can and cannot know about your characters at a glance. Lucifer's power -- the ability to shape Creation -- basically lets him see what things are made up of and what their place in the multiverse is, which allows him to determine quite a bit about them.

So, please let me know if you are willing to allow permission for him to be able to:

Determine the nature of your character (aliens, demons, god, 'other' -- in person only) and details about their past. Please also note whether they give off any 'signature' that he could detect from a distance, such as extremely powerful magic, reiatsu, ki-signature, etc, etc.

See through illusions, glamors, and other attempts to change 'the fabric of reality' (this includes reality bending and probability manipulation) your character is capable of.

Detect any large-scale applications of magical, reality bending, or other hardcore 'supernatural' manipulations that your character may be capable of, in person or at a distance.

Please note: individuals who have very strong magical attunement, angels, and demons -- all of you have the ability and automatic permission to detect Lucifer's entrance into the universe. For those more heavenly or hell-ly in nature, this power would probably manifest more specifically as the power of the Morningstar; though, unlike Mazikeen, Lucifer will be masking this in person.

Any questions, comments, thoughts, concerns, plots, please feel free to post here and let me know.
