Project
Ecusta Trail, Phase I
This project completed by TPD Carolinas operations, now part of McAdams, included planning and final design services for the first phase of Ecusta Trail, which extends approximately six miles from Kanuga Road in Hendersonville to Brevard Road (US 64) near Battle Creek Road in Horseshoe. McAdams staff completed planning and design services through bid documents for trail roadway crossings (at-grade) and provided support for North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) coordination.
For the trail crossings work, each location was evaluated through a study of traffic conditions (speed and volume), as well as geometric review for stopping sight distances, traffic calming, and other potential crossing treatments. Treatments included high visibility trail crossing treatments, flashing warning devices, Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs), and full signalization. Staff worked with NCDOT and other local jurisdictions to develop a standard approach to crossings that would help to ensure consistent user expectations from the trail and motorized vehicle approaches. Designs incorporated Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) requirements and best practices. Work also included the development of temporary detours for bicycles and pedestrians on the existing roadway network.
