Oh hi there.
I have a problem for you to solve! There is a reward for you at the end if you do :P

I've been working on Julie's ninja-pirate-assassin dude again, he's coming along pretty well although I still have hella problems with lighting. Anyway.
I've been thinking about what to put on his mask. Like this: (the image is quite dark for me, is it dark for you?)

What thinks you? Any of those? None? Something else? Five question marks in a row makes Hannah something something?????

Tell me what you think and then you may have delicious chocolate-chip cookie sandwiches.

Chocolate-chip cookie sandwich

Originally from A Treasury of New Zealand Baking - p. 64 (with additions from me, cos I am so much better than Al Brown XP )

Makes 15-20 sandwiches, depending on size

Ingredients

Biscuits

2 1/4 c cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/4 c butter, softened
3/4 c brown sugar (you could totally get away with 1/2 c each of the sugars, it would still be fine)
3/4 c white sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence
2 eggs
1 1/2 c chocolate chips

Ganache

200 g chocolate (preferably dark)
250 ml cream

The recipe called for 250g chocolate and 300ml cream, but that's way too much. Then again, if you need an excuse for extra ganache... <3

Instructions

Biscuits

Preheat oven to 190ºC.
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together in a bowl.
In a separate bowl beat the butter. both sugars and vanilla essence until creamy and light. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat until just incorporated.
Gradually add the flour mixture, beating well. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Chill in fridge for 30 min to 1 hour (it doesn't say this in the book, but there is no way the dough can be worked without chilling it a little first).
Roll pieces of dough into small balls (the dough may need to rest a little while at room temp first), the press out into flattened biscuit shapes. Remember that the biscuits will spread a little while cooking, so don't make them too big.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove and cool on wire rack.

Filling

Place the chocolate in a bowl with the cream. (I would recommend using very dark chocolate, as the biscuits are sweet enough with a super-sweet filling too. See notes also.)
Place bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, making sure no water gets into or touches the bowl. Leave the bowl there, stirring occasionally, until chocolate is nearly melted and combined with cream.
Take bowl off heat and stir, making sure chocolate and cream are thoroughly combined. Leave in a cool place until only slightly runny.
Pipe (or just use a spoon, it's so much easier) the ganache on to one biscuit, then press another biscuit on top of it. Remember not to put the filling right to the edges or it will overflow. Repeat until all biscuits are filled.

Additional notes

It might be nice to add grated orange zest to the ganache, or some not-too-sweet liqueur, or maybe mint essence, just to add some tang to the flavour. For me, this recipe is almost too sweet, although if you like it that way just chocolate is fine too.

So ugh here I am again, mostly because I'm slowly working my way through everything that isn't work. Which is, you know, not healthy, on account of how I have 12 pages of comic to ink and colour (four of them, I still have to draw) in two weeks. I forsee a lot of late nights, and writing this isn't helping at all. Also I have a poster and brochure to design, a 2,500 word essay to write and two watercolour spreads to illustrate. So yeah, how's that art thing working for you, Hannah?

I've spent so much money on art supplies as well... easily over $100 in one day. Most of those things, I didn't need. Actually, a lot of it was paper, which is far too expensive for something that pretty much grows on trees. But, mmmmmmm, paper <3
At least I have lots of nice projects lined up for the mid-year break, I'm really looking forward to them. Now I just have to hope I actually end up doing them.

And OH GOD the other day I got mistaken for a Wellington High student. By someone who works for WHS. I was walking to the bus stop and the guy asked me, wasn't I supposed to be in class? And I was like, uh... no?? And he was all, aren't you a High student (hahah, high student), so I told him I go to Massey, and he said: Oh, sorry. It's just you looked young enough, and the way you were looking at me, I thought you might be suspicious.
... I looked at him what? How? I mean, I know my default expression is generally looking-at-you-in-a-funny-way, but dang. I didn't think it was that bad.
Also I'm sorry for being small and easily mistaken for a high-schooler, MY BAD >:(

Maaaaaaan, it's been nearly two months since I last posted. I'm doing that thing again.
Although that said it's not like much has happened, so whatever.

Luminary continues to amuse me. We often get tourists in fresh from various cruise ships, and you can tell the ones who aren't used to New Zealand's quaint, capricious ways. I think it can take a while to understand Wellington and its eccentricities (and by eccentricities I mostly mean major failings when compared to the rest of the world). When the floor vibrated in Luminary the other day (as it is wont to do of occasion, for no discernible reason), I was asked by a suddenly worried-looking woman if it was an underground train. I was like, love, this is Wellington. We barely have overground trains.

I also got asked by a woman to try on a hat today. It's not uncommon, it's usually someone buying a present, but this time she looks at me for a while, shakes her head and mutters, 'No... No, that probably wouldn't fit me then, would it?'
But, but, but. There are mirrors. For the looking into while you try things on. To see if it fits you. Why get the shop assistant to do it instead? I don't even. And similar.
Don't get me wrong, I love my job and, despite much repining to the contrary, I like working in retail. But sometimes... people happen. They happen in ways that make me cry a little inside.

Self-indulgencation

Felt like taking some more foody photos, so you get some pictures of my Christmas breakfast, which was lovely. And had penguins in it. And brandy snap ice cream, which is a fantastic invention.

It was a really beautiful day on Christmas too, which was a great contrast to today, when I must say it rained like a bitch. Wind speeds of 160kph, I believe; it was almost too dangerous to go outside for most of the day. I hope you choke on it, Wellington.
Of course, this also meant that there was barely anyone in town, so I wrote most of this entry at work to alleviate the numbing tediousness.

For Christmas dinner my mother and I went to the Harvey's house, which was interesting. Haven't seen most of them for a year. Actually it was alright, mostly because Sam seems to have grown out of being an adolescent boy, but then he left to go pick up a friend from the airport and then I really was left surrounded by people either over twice my age, or half it. Which is how all good parties should be, I know (–∆–) Made up for it by drinking five glasses of wine in quick succession and spending the rest of the time being slightly more talkative than I usually am.

Was finally able to install all the software I wanted onto my new computer today, which means I might be at the end of my computer problems, at least for the moment and no I haven't joined Facebook yet hush now.
I also need to rave about Photoshop CS5 for a while because MY GOD the brushes are coooooool. And the lines are so smooth and precise. And, and, and, I think we will get along very well.

The pressure sensitivity is greatly improved.
And now you can forge my signature, free of charge don't do it.

Uggghhh I forgot how tiring working in retail is... It's amazing how just standing up can take it out of you. Or maybe it's just me, cos I'm hideously unfit. Maybe it's just me, cos being friendly takes more effort than it does for the average person :\ Either way I'm totally exhausted and can't wait until this week is over.
I think I've spent so much time hunched over a computer that I can't stand up straight any more. I always catch myself slouching, I really need to fix my posture.
Well, I've got three more days in a row of working 9.00-6.00 so I'd better get used to it. On the plus side, that's lots of money for me :)

I have noticed this weird thing that girls do while shopping: if we see something we like, we have to touch it. It's not just picking it up to look at it, I always see women just stroke a necklace... Or they'll ask to see something in the cabinet (interesting that 'see' here means 'hold') and then give it back without trying it on. They'll just hold it. I've starting noticing myself do it too. I wonder why this is?

What else has happened? I've had a group of Japanese women try to haggle me down by fifty cents. It was a nice try, but when something costs $40.50 I really don't think the 50 part is something you need to worry about.

In other news, my new computer's finally arrived, but I can't get it to connect to the internet. So far my ISP's tech support has been no help, so I guess I'm gonna have to call up Apple... I'm sure it's not supposed to be this complicated, jeez.

So I've finally started drawing again... Got started on the picture Julie wanted, although admittedly I'm not quite sure what it was she wanted. So I've drawn her an urban ninja pirate. Guy. Asian. Batman.

He's up on a tall building, there's city and stuff in the background, no really there is. It needs something more, 'cause compositionally speaking, it's pretty weak, but I'm not sure what to do. Maybe he should be holding something... Suggestions?

Anyway.
I have a nice canvas I want to paint it on but I'm starting to think it would just be easier to paint it digitally (it would be easier). But, but, but, paints /artistic agony
I impressed myself with how quickly I was able to sketch it out, although it still pains me somewhat to look at it. So now I need someone to tell me I can still draw hinthintyhint.

Was slightly surprised I still know what a guy looks like, what with being surrounded by ladies all the time. I mean, really, I only have female friends (there're a couple of guys at Massey that I don't really count cos we don't talk outside of Massey), my courses are 80% female and I work in an accessories shop for women.
I think... something needs to change. Either my social life or sexuality, it's a tough choice you know.

Werrrl, today for the second time I rode on a bus which had a roof made to look like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel WHICH IS GLORIOUS. This made me happy for a moment, because I get all wanky about art history and the like :D And because I know some things about the Sistine Chapel and it makes me feel pleasingly superior to know them.
But then on closer inspection (and because I am anal about presentation) I realised that it was pixelated, badly stuck on, and the chapel roof wasn't designed to accommodate electric lights and poles for hanging on to. Also the image was all stretched because the roof of a bus isn't curved like the Sistine's. And various other wrong things. So ended my joyous bus experience.

On another note, roller derby was pretty neat on Saturday night, saw some really fantastic jamming. Auckland really handed Wellington their arses, though, the score was something like 211 to 72 (.___.) To add insult to injury, it turns out the scoreboard couldn't even handle 200 points and had to revert back to 100 again. Way to crush our tiny spirits, guys. It's okay, though, we were placated by the glow-in-the-dark dragon. Yes there really was one.

I found another type book I want today... I get attracted to books way too easily, I really must stop wanting to know things >___< I've got a wishlist of forty books with the bookdepository, it's getting painful just looking at it. BOOOOOOKS (which cost a lot of money, despite the savings).
Also TYYYYYYPE (again).
I've been spending too much money again, though, what with the new computer (YES NECESSARY) and software (also necessary) and various other unnecessary frivolities that I must have because I am a material girl something something.

It's nice to be earning money, though. Well, I say earning, it's not really earning if you're just the medium through which it passes from one store to another.

In the meantime, the list of artworks I need/want to make is growing longer and longer and I never seem to either have time or be in the mood to draw. I'm hoping this will change once I have a computer.
It's cruel when the only times I feel inspired are when I'm not in a position to start sketching >:( Especially when it's for work I promised people, like, two years ago. BAD FRIEND /jubeevoice

Aaaand on the cooking front, those matcha/azuki cupcakes really don't look so good when the red sauce seeps into the green icing and makes delicious brown goo. I think the flavour's mellowed out, too, although mum thinks they've gotten stronger, so who knows ,':|

At the end-of-paper presentation one of my marketing tutors told me that I could be a voice-over artist. Another said my voice was calming and relaxing. And in Classics in high school everyone always wanted me to read when we took turns reading aloud from The Aeneid, or the plays we studied.

Julie keeps making me read to her.

I'm on the wrong career path, boys and girls. I say this because I've had so many comments and suggestions recently that I've actually started to consider it.

I think I am destined to become a narrator of audio books. Or perhaps the shipping forecast...
Or reading quietly to a group of small children gathered attentively at my feet? Maybe not.

Also: type t-shirts! Quite literally. Designed by Kawamura Masashi, there are five different styles based on the fonts Baskerville, Courier, Caslon, Helvetica and Cooper Black. They are the neatest. And GOD I want one. Damn you, Japan.

I've been thinking I should write something for a while but now that I'm here I have nothing exciting to say. So you get drivel, yes drivel instead. Hahahaaaaar, suckerssss.

Well, having a job is nice. Working at Luminary is good fun so far, except that because it's mostly sole charge, I can't leave the store for long periods. Which means my actual lunch break is ten minutes long and the rest of the half hour I have to spend lurking behind a curtain in the back, surreptitiously munching. And then I leap out and surprise customers into giving me all their money. Or maybe that's not what I'm supposed to do.
Why yes actually I am secretly a friendly, motivated, helpful and above all smiley person, thank you for not making comments to the otherwise ಠ˄ಠ

Also the music is not so much fun to sit through for nine hours, on account of how the playlist is only about 100 songs long and consists mostly of Bic Runga, Dido and Michael Bublé. Given that the playlist is titled 'Chill', perhaps I should have seen it coming. I'm sure they're talented artists and lovely people, although that thought isn't protection enough against the agony of hearing Sand In My Shoes for the fifth time in two hours. That said, someone seems to have slipped in Beyonce's Naughty Girl, which perplexes me greatly.

I went to the European Masters exhibition at Te Papa, which was nice. I think I may have worried some people with my glazed expression and barely restrained urge to stroke the paintings. Degaaaaaaaaaas ©©
I was a bit disappointed that there weren't more... famous paintings there though. I know - or at least have heard of - most of the artists but I was kinda sad that most of their prominent works weren't there, on account of how they're in other collections. Another reason why I need to do my Grand Tour, yes thank you Kevin McCloud you smug bastard with your adventuring, intellectual, Italian-speaking ways.

I say #1 because I'm sure there will be more to come. Also because this has turned out to be a list of one thing, because I had something else to write about but now I've forgotten.

1. I'm not quite sure how to describe this. I think it comes down to people not paying attention. All I know is, it happens most often with my mother.

Case study one:
Mum: There's a sale on at Farmers today.
Me: Yes, I know.
Mum: Did you know? I'm sure there's something you'll want to buy.
Me: Yes mum, I know there's a sale. We got their mailer.
Mum: There's 20% - 50% off.
Me: Yes, I know. I don't want to get anything right now.
Mum: It's only on for today.
Me: Yes, I know. But I'm not going to go.
Mum: Cheap things.
Me: I know, but-
Mum: At Farmers.
Me: YES I KNOW YOU SAID I ALREADY KNEW BUT YOU KEPT TELLING ME ANYWAY NOW HUSH.

I want to be this guy. Seriously, I think this is one of the roads down which my style is going, and I hadn't even seen his work before a couple of weeks ago.
Also it looks like epic fun to sit in a studio doing lots watercolours of pretty people, like he does for his fashion portraits. It'd be nice to just do pin-ups all day, the downside being you have to get famous before that can happen.
I wonder how easy it is to get into fashion illustration with no fashion background... As long as you can draw, it's fine, right? Right?
Still, it'd be nice to have my work on the cover of Vogue or Harpers Bazaar one day. And also to meet Dita von Teese.

Also I might actually have a job! Thanks Sarita! Jacinta seems really awesome. She liked the dangly fox-thing on my handbag :3

So my mother just admitted to me that she wishes I was a boy. In those words. Maybe cos she's had a bit to drink, I don't know. So there you go. I'm not sure what to make of that.

I can't wait until uni ends. Not because I'm not enjoying it, but cos there's so much I want to do that I don't have time for right now. Like making CROQUEMBOUCHE. Oh gads some pleeeeease give me an excuse to make one they look so awesome.

Today I handed in my application for the papers I want to do next year. Well, I say that, but in reality there were quite a few more courses I wanted to do than there was space available in which to do them. Curse you, Type III, wih your silly prerequisite papers that I don't have space for either (a tantrum is thrown).
Now I just have to hope that I can actually get into all the ones I applied for. In previous years I've got into all of them, but not all in the semesters I chose. Now, only two of eight papers can be done in either semester, which means if I can't get into the class I want in one semester, it's bollocks'd up all my plans ಠ△ಠ

In related news, if I do get to do Sequential Art next year, I might need a very short story to turn into a comic. Maybe seven to ten pages long? I can't be sure until I start, obviously, but my point in saying this was that I'm pretty pants at writing stories. I could use an already existing story like a fairytale or myth, or... You guys like to write things, right? ©©© Bearing in mind I may or may not use it. Or I might illustrate it anyway. If you like :D Either way it won't be for some time.

Oh man, that hailstorm was insane. I know this because I was caught in the middle of it. It's hard running in high heels when the ground is slippery with hail and you're in the middle of a wide road. Hail hurts.

Also lightning, mmmmmm. Why do I like this weather so much? Being caught ouside in a deluge of rain and ice and rumbling thunder made me disturbingly happy. Even though my fingers were so numb I couldn't let go of my Snapper card as I made my way home (from mistakenly thinking roller derby was today, not tomorrow. Although Sarita did email me saying Friday, curse you) Luckily I was out there anyway, but still. It was rather cold.

Ummmm on another note, I'm thinking of selling some of my various anime DVDs... Sarita's dibs'd Fruits Basket, I think, but there's also Noir, one Chobits and a couple of other slightly obscure ones. If anyone's interested :3

I felt like showing off tonight 'cos I've been baking for a good part of the day and I am most proud of the results. Especially since I managed to co-ordinate three different dishes at once ┌(・。・)┘♪└(・。・)┐♪┌(・。・)┘

First are the rocky road cupcakes © chocolate flavoured with marshmallows, almonds, chocolate chips and glacé cherries, topped with dark chocolate ganache... so tasty.

Also made some apricot-and-almond chelsea buns, which turned out far better than I expected! Nom.

Look rather tasty though I do say so myself~ Damn I'm good.
I'm starting to think maybe my dream future is to be a (rich) housewife. Yeah, I think I could work that.

Ahhh, mid semester break, you couldn't come too soon.
Stayed up till three this morning in order to complete my marketing paper. Not sure how coherent it will be considering sleep-deprivation makes Hannah something something.

Still, I feel like I've accomplished a lot so far and I'm pretty proud of my work. I made a booklet on sushi shops and it looks pretty rad though I do say it myself ヽ(ﾟ▽ﾟ*)ノ

Sadly I've got homework to do over the break which includes meeting with my marketing partner to discuss creating a product to rival Tip Top's Fruju ice-block. Which seems kinda cruel, considering its the sort of thing professionals have to do; they're kinda dropping us in the deep end. Which is even deeper for me 'cos as we all know I'm already floundering in the murky octopus-filled depths, socially speaking. Or something.

Still, it's nice to relax finally after one dreadfully stressful week.

One nice little discovery I have made is The Book Depository. It's a UK-based company that sells crazy cheap books of all kinds, with no shipping fees whatsoever. Even to New Zealand. And that, children, is the true meaning of Christmas.

I wasn't really planning on writing anything 'cos I've got lots of work to do (I know, right?) but when I logged on I got that message again and it kinda tipped me over the edge.

The one I'm talking about is the one I get every time I log in, which is, in a slightly patronising tone; "You've only got two friends. Why not [go out and get some more, you loser]...?"

Design woes

One of the things that separates design and fine arts is that design is always communicating. In any good design there will be an underlying message or purpose that the designer has considered when creating their piece. Often this is true of fine art as well, but while a superficially beautiful thing can be called art, in my opinion at least, it can't be called design.

My point in saying this is that by now, so close to the end of the second year, you'd think all the other design students would have realised this too. For the first year it was understandable if you weren't used to thinking about the specific meaning of your work, but by now, the tutors have made it pretty clear they want you to be able to rationalise everything.

They tell us in the brief they expect us to present our works to the class: that's about ten minutes of explaining our work not only to our tutor but our classmates, too. It usually counts towards our overall mark. So a design student should be thinking about what their work means right from the start, especially when they know they're going to get assessed on it. I expect to be asked about why I chose specific design elements, so I always use ones I can explain (or can at least make up an excuse for at the last minute (•ω•) ).

So why am I still hearing, "oh, I didn't really think about it that much... I guess I just like it"? Liking your work is fine, but.
We're pretty sure you wouldn't have used it if you didn't. We've already assumed that much. But while it's very pretty, it's also clogging up your page with pointless decoration that totally detracts from your design. Or worse, your whole design is pointless decoration. You want to be a graphic designer? That's ALL ABOUT communication. If you can't understand that, maybe you're in the wrong area.

What's worse is the brief that spawned this tirade specified that the designs must be based on the history and sound of Maori place names. So you've already got the meaning part done for you.

Thankfully, there were only a couple of people like this. The rest of the presentations were great ☆

Although there were some parts that I felt were kinda unnecessary or strange. Like, when the girl makes her chess piece. I felt sure at the time she'd have to use it some time, and yet we never saw it again. What was the point of showing us that, then? Cos they'd already explained what a totem is and everything.

And then I had a dream that I was drinking that tasty apple-cinnamon drink. Only at Alice. It was, like, exactly what happened at Alice except I had a different drink. Way to go on that one, subconscious.

When going through my periodic checks of gaming-related websites I discovered the third Golden Sun's official name and release window~ Oh god I've been looking forward to this for so long. And by so long I mean it's been SEVEN SODDIN' YEARS. It's called Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and should be coming out around Christmas (of course). I do hope that goes for NZ as well.

Anyway, there were new demos at the E3 2010 convention, which look pretty exciting! I'm kinda liking the character designs for this one too, although the whole 'children of the former protagonists' thing is not really how I'd like it. Still, I loved the first two games so much, so I really hope this one doesn't let me down. I think perhaps my happiness during the summer holidays might rest entirely on the shoulders of this game >__< Argharghargh SO. MUCH. HAPPY.

Yes, I am overexcited. I don't get excited over much, let me be :P

Now all I have to do is make sure I can afford it when the time comes. Ahah.
