SAN DIEGO NEEDS REAL AFFORDABILITY

The housing crisis is real. San Diego is becoming too expensive for too many. It has been too difficult to build the housing we need.
But punishing Mom-and-Pop landlords won’t make San Diego more affordable or promote equity. It will make the housing crisis worse — with fewer housing options and even higher prices.

Right now, San Diego politicians are increasing fees across the board while proposing PUNITIVE regulations on housing providers that will make it harder for mom-and-pop property owners to run their business.

Extreme regulations and red tape will make it nearly impossible for housing providers to cover costs and expenses, leading to a growing number of owners removing their properties from the market — meaning less housing stock at a time when it is most needed.

These proposed destructive policies include:

  • Allowing tenants additional time to pay rent without penalty
  • Severely limiting late fees
  • Require landlords to accept tenant-provided screening reports

“Blunt rules don’t build housing. They drive small landlords out of the market and leave San Diego with fewer homes and higher prices.”

San Diego should work on smart, pro-housing policies that increase the number of units — not blunt rules that remove housing units or allow them to fall into disrepair.
