The House of Awesome is OPEN for people to stay. However. It is extremely WELL protected. The first floor is open to anyone, and Emma may offer some of the empty apartments for others. There is running water after Sirens. There are iron and silver 'decorations' on the walls that some may recognize also can be used as weapons. There energy fields throughout the house to Void the area if a fight breaks out or someone loses control of their powers. There is also rock salt hidden in various places on each floor. The main kitchen, Magneto's condo, Jubilee and Emma's condo, and various other places are Hellhound proof - all empty apartments are as it's too hard to FIND Growley otherwise. Other people's property, just ask that mun. The front porch is not Lucifer-proof the rest is. People who do not live there do not have access to the pool or lower areas - the elevator and stairs require keycards and aren't accessible. There are wards put up by Harry Dresden before he left, and Hitsuguya put up a barrier as well. Some places - like Magneto's office - have warding done in blood. There are also automated defences, in terms of lasers, guns, etc thoughout the house.

Loki was supposed to magic up blankets/cots for people. There is plenty of food.

Antarctica :
One of his longest lasting bases and strong holds. The cold, clean beauty of it, without mark of mankind, is soothing and centering. This is icy minty water on hot dry day - he doesn't mind others seeing it.

Bermuda Triangle
His island in the Bermuda Triangle. An island raised off the ocean floor, it's hidden. When Magneto isn't there, only animals do - and birds flourish. It's hidden, a secret hidden place, one comes to only by invitation. there are ruins of the previous people, left to be reclaimed by nature, save a tower, in which he lives when he stays there. There is a sense of salt water and warm although unless you have his senses or know about them you wouldn't know why.

India
ALSO Very Image heavy. India is common travel spot for Israelis, and it has such a range - ice and snow capped mountains, lush tropics, desert. It's wild and beautiful and no matter what his soul is yearning for, some where lies the balm he needs. Shaken, it tastes like curries, and wind, and there is a hum from people but it's so far, so distant, along with a stronger, more compelling beat.

Savage Land
Wonder. Joy. Dazzling, sparking joke, a child's excitement at an unexpected but much loved gift. He will show this everyone. It's hidden inside the mists of the mountains.

Brazil
Brazil is hidden, buried deep in his past, a stranger in a new world where he didn't fit, a man on a mission and so terribly wounded. Here the world first saw Magneto as he would be known - the deadly Mutant terrorist. Here was a brutal lesson learned: You aren't one of us, and even if you play by the rules, you're still wrong. He wouldn't wish to talk about it, or why it's so heart-wrenching. Shake it, and it grows warm, like blood with an overwhelming taste/smell of copper and iron.

Asteroid M
There have been several. All hung in low Earth orbit. All doomed. They look onto the Earth like a child forever cast out, forever ignored by the others.

Xavier Grounds
The Xavier Family Grounds. The School. Their own phoenix. There is maybe, maybe, hope here. But not for him.

Auschwitz
WARNING: It's Auschwitz. Over half the pictures - and it is very image heavy - are from the 40's. There are three with the ovens shown prior to being cleaned out. Almost all come from the memorial website.

This is where Magneto grew to manhood. This is where Max Eisenhardt died, and from the remains, the man who would be Magneto was born. It's brutal and ugly, it's Hell as Magneto sees it, pain and sickness, abuse and death, impotent rage and an utter lack of hope. He'll speak of it. And even though it hurts, he'll show others. He doesn't want anyone to forgot, even if it means his wounds are picked until they bleed anew, so long as no one forgets, so long as no one lets it happen again. It leaves a film in the mouth, gag-worthy, ash and something burning, sickly-sweet and somewhat like pork.

Genosha

For most of Genosha's time, it was an island off the African coast. Its capital was Hammer Bay. At a glance, it seemed to be a good, prosperous nation. The standard of living was high and the citizens were well-treated. The economy was excellent and growing all the time. Political or racial turmoil was non-existent. Good things seemed to be happening in little Genosha. But all these things only applied for the humans of this small, inconspicuous, seemingly unimportant island nation.

In Genosha, the mutant population was enslaved. David Moreau, a scientist was known as the Genengineer. Anyone with the mutant gene was forced through a horrific treatment developed by the Genengineer. They were genetically modified and enhanced for their powers, and stripped of free will. They were treated like animals and given numbers, identified by those numbers. Their powers were changed to fit the needs of the economy. Then they were shipped off and worked as slaves until they died. No one was allowed in or out of Genosha. If you are a citizen, you will stay a citizen until you die. If you are not a citizen, then you're not getting in Genosha. The Magistrates were a special police force that tracked down people who tried to escape and brought them back forcibly, and the Press Gang handled mutant problems. All in all, it was a horrible place.

Playing on his reputation, Magneto made his last blackmail attempt on the world threatening to destroy planetary EM field if he was not granted territory to create a mutant homeland. Despite the efforts of the X-Men to stop him, including the ultimate sacrifice of Magneto's clone Joseph, the U.N. granted Magneto Genosha. The island nation had been torn apart by civil war between the Magistrate regime and the Mutate rebellion for months (perhaps years) and the U.N. hoped Magneto would be so bogged down in fighting this war, the Legacy Virus sweeping through the population, and Genosha's failed economy that he would never trouble the world again.

They were wrong. Within six months, Magneto had led the mutants and mutates to victory, and the Legacy Virus was cured. Magneto quickly rebuilt Genosha into a prosperous mutant paradise. Overconfident, Magneto declared war on humanity again. The X-Men snuck into Genosha to intervene and in the course of battle, Magneto's spine was severed by Wolverine. As Magneto's powers are dependent on his nervous system being intact, this not only left him paralyzed but unable to use his powers. This event would end up costing millions of lives.

In revenge for Xavier's mistreatment of her, Cassandra Nova found the last living relative of Bolivar Trask, who had created the Sentinels. She then convinced him to give her control over the Sentinels. She sent them them to Genosha where they began wiping out the population. Depowered, Magneto was unable to stop them. The entire island was reduced to a pile of rubble, and all the progress was lost. 16 million people were killed, leaving perhaps a couple hundred survivors. Nova was eventually defeated by the X-Men back in New York, but the damage was done.

Everything about this is painful, and green, sickly tasting.

Germany
Nuremberg, Germany actually. He was born here, two months after the first rally. They fled when he was ten, the night their Shul was burned. Germany is nothing but fear and danger and hatred. Again, he doesn't mind others seeing - history will have her witnesses. Shake it, and there's a flash of gold before it disappears.

Poland
The Warsaw Ghetto. The end of Max's childhood, in ways Germany wasn't. Because no where was safe. But there was the chance of escape, and trades to learn, and he could do something. He'd rather people not see, but again. History and witnesses, his will be damned. You can almost hear quiet sobbing, and it stinks, like rot and illness. And gunpowder.

Romania
His wife's people's home. Never his. Always an outsider. He doesn't wish to discuss it. It's bare. Unconnected.

Ukraine
Vinnytsia. Death. Despair. Pain. Do. Not. Ask. It shakes away with a bright, blinding flash.

Follow up to this thread.

The apartment was so clean he was sure it hurt, the kitchen was flawless. You couldn't even see where he had touched up the paint to cover the pipes leaking. The laundry was done, folded and put away. All he had left to due was wait for Daniel to come back from where ever he'd had to run off to.

And he was coming back. Everything was fine.

All right so the bed was a mess from him twisting himself up in the covers.

POWER

Magneto is an Omega level mutant whose primary powers lie in magnetic field manipulation. He can manipulate magnetic fields, be they natural or artificial. This makes his power practically limitless, the only stumbling blocks being Magneto's own perceptions of his power and his physical condition at the time.

The main powers he relies on for defensive combat would be creating magnetic force fields, magnetic flight, and matter manipulation. His force field can be quickly expanded to protect large areas, or to include several people and is capable of withstanding some of the most extreme environments, from nuclear strikes, the vacuum of space, and multiple concurrent attacks. Magneto flight is Magneto's main mode of long-term travel. He can accomplish flight in two ways, by either manipulating magnetic fields between himself and the Earth or by gliding along the naturally occurring magnetic lines of the Earth. While the latter is far quicker, it is also far more dangerous and technically difficult as Magneto does not possess speedster reflexes and enhanced senses in order to travel safety in this way he must use his force field to protect himself and must concentrate a great deal on where he is over the planet. When he is flying at any speed at all by any method, he must take precautions normally through the use of his armour and his force field to protect himself from friction and debris. As a result, typically when he is travelling at speeds greater than twenty miles an hour or while flying through debris filled area he has to use his force field.

During offensive combat Magneto uses pretty much whatever he can to win, or failing winning, survive and escape. Using his powers he can create bolts of magnetic force or lightening, electricity, influence and control other forms of energy or radiation, manipulate gravity, and bend or deflect the visible light spectrum around his body.

While he can use his powers to create magnetic fields around non-ferrous objects this is exponentially more difficult for him, requiring so much effort than while weakened he will not be able to do so.

In addition to combat related purposes, his powers make him capable of matter manipulation, of viewing (and to some level influencing and controlling) the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and organic iron manipulation. He's also a living fMRI machine.

Magneto has an almost subconscious link to the Earth's EM field. As a result, he forever knows what is happening to it, draws from it unconsciously, and uses it as a sort of permanent map - meaning he doesn't get lost - at the same time, the Earth's field grants him a sort of odd immortality.

In rare instances, his is able to channel vast amounts of magnetic energy to boost his strength, stamina, durability, reflexes, and speed to superhuman levels. There is a cost to his - and a high one - leaving him weakened and exhausted if not unconscious, causing debilitating migraine headaches and occasionally petite mal and grand mal seizures, and leaving him at a high risk of a brain hemorrhage.

He has also been shown as able to use Cerebra and on at least on occasion, enter the Astral Plane, as well has having extremely good "instincts". This is due to him having some psionic abilities, despite being very very broken.

Magneto suffers from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder but has chosen thus far not to receive treatment. Minor fluxes in energy around him, from lightening storms, power stations and sub stations, and other small surges can affect him, especially if he is caught off guard. Large fluxes, from solar flares, solar storms, near gamma ray bursts, and other surges of EM energy do affect him. In peak health, he can normally monitor for these fluxes and prepare himself for the overload. If he is ill or injured, he is less able to prepare himself and more adversely affected. These effects are the same ones his suffers from due to the nature of his powers, only amplified.

His powers cause chronic migraine headaches, and occasional nose bleeds. He has a history of seizures, mostly petite mal seizures, and brain hemorrhages. Only a trusted few - Charles Xavier and Isabelle - have ever known the full extent of the physical toll his powers place on his body. He is paranoid and distrustful, and there forth not likely to seek medical intervention or help unless in dire need. In that vein, his powers are linked to his neurological health. An injury to his nervous system WILL affect his powers, with an injury to his central nervous system proving the most destructive.

One side effect of his powers is the creation of ozone. While ozone is detectable in high connections to normal people, to those with enhanced sense a lingering order of ozone is always be detected. Ozone in high concretions is toxic however Magneto's body has evolved in order to breathe it safely. While not a side effect to him, pure oxygen is high flammable, a concern he must weigh in combat situations. Ozone is pale blue gas, detectable with normal human senses at around 0.01 parts-per-million and smells like chlorine bleach - it would not be outside the realm of possibility for someone to think he's wearing a freshly washed white shirt most times. From .1 to 1ppm Ozone starts to become hazardous to people, causing headaches, blurry eyes/burning vision, and respiratory distress. Ozone will start to dissipate after about 30 minutes in normal atmospheric conditions but in even low level amounts can harm latex, plastics, and sensitive plant life.

Another side effect is the accumulation of static electricity on his person, meaning he has to constantly discharge it or risk damaging electronic equipment.

Also due to how his body has adapted to his powers, he has a higher need for iron and electrolytes than a normal person, and a slightly higher need for copper. Also, he has slight polycythermia which means that his blood contains more red blood cells than it should, which in a body not built for this would cause many health problems. Magneto's body however adapted to this as it did to the ozone production. There is an added benefit that if someone receives a transfusion of his blood, they get more of the red-blood cells than in a standard donation - like receiving a 'double count' pack of cells, or a pint of blood product with an additional pint's worth of red blood cells added.

An added sidenote, while it may or may not be related to his powers, Magneto gets horribly seasick.

PERSONALITY
If one were to ask Magneto to describe his personality, the answer given would be quite different than the answer one might come to through observation.

Which does not mean there are not places where Magneto would agree with any observational data presented.

Magneto is, by nature, a loner. This was not a result of the War, but something he speaks to Xavier about, that even as a boy he wanted to be left alone, to explore nature, “As though the fierce unyielding emptiness without struck a resonant echo within my heart and soul.” There is something haunting about a man who can admit to such loneness, even as a child, and the weight of that has not diminished over time.

Magneto admits his happiest time was in the USSR with Magda and Anya, a self and home taught scholar working as a carpenter to support his family while dreaming of being an engineer. However quiet an existence this was, even still he was a man of action, actively tutoring himself in a Roma village where books and formal education are met with suspicion at best, while working a physically demanding, punishing job as a primarily a carpenter but also as a day laborer. This is not the action of a man who is able to sit around on his thumbs.

He is also devoted, even obsessively so, to his family and those he loves. He has told Cyclops there are none left that bear his name, and that he comes from a large family – given he himself changed his name post-War, it is not difficult to imagine others doing so. Then there were children smuggled away and adopted out – and yet, he knows he is the sole surviving member of his family. That takes an obsessive level of devotion. As does his searching Europe, mostly on foot, for Magda after she abandoned him. To quote himself, ““I was willing to deny who I was, everything that my family died for, so that I could find one woman…” This speaks highly of the lengths he is willing to go. The people and causes that matter to him are placed above his own needs – and certainly, an IDENTITY is a fundamental need.

Magneto gives himself, often times, completely to his cause, be it discovering the fates of his family members, searching for his wife, hunting War Criminals, or working as an orderly in a hospital. These are selfless actions, and in them, he becomes so devoted that he loses sight of the bigger picture. He’ll become so devoted to a task he forgets his own needs, or believes to be to be less important, even when dealing in matters of sleep and food.

Through a Mirror, Darkly:
For a man with such extensive in field training of medicine and psychology, Magneto is frighteningly, cripplingly blind to his nature.

Magneto would tell you he is a realist and has a will to survive second to none. Magneto would not deny having a healthy ego.

The fact that his ‘ego’ is sometimes twisted in megalomania, and that he has been blindly arrogant is more related to the ravages of his powers than an ego out of check. He isn’t a braggart, nor is he falsely modest. For the most part, you are not going to injury him by striking at his ego, although those he has a strong attachment to will. However due to being brought to adulthood in a world that did not tolerate weakness – indeed weakness would mean certain death – he may not allow the wounds to be seen. His own sense of self assuredness can leave him blind however, meaning that it takes an incredibly forceful metaphorical kick to the head to make him realize the error of his ways. Which is not to say he cannot grow and change – but it is slow and subtle, so much so that he often believes himself incapable of it. And this is perhaps what hamstrings him. One has to wonder if a man born bare the surname of ‘Eisenhardt’ was meant to embody is so completely.

Certainly, he has a strong will. It has been credited to be so strong as to give him equal footing against Xavier in a telepathic attack. It certainly takes a strength of will often unseen to survive what he has survived – life in the Ghettos, the murder of his family, being buried alive, Auschwitz-Birkenau, life as a Sonderkommando, the murder of a child, the lost of a beloved wife, the murder of a lover, trust betrayed again and again by those he should have been able to trust, and the genocide at Genosha, to name a few – and to continue to pick himself up, keep going, keep breathing, keeping believing that the world can be made to be a better place.

But that is not the behavior of a ‘realist’. That is a behavior of a romantic – even an idealist. Magneto is certainly romantic in his relationships with women, and certainly seems to believe that relationships are long term. His grief over the loss of Magda, even over thirty years later, and his devotion to his lover Lee, even long after their relationship ended speaks to how completely committed he is to those he loves. He truly believes in the strength of his own will, given to melodrama and grandiosity, his ability to carry a grudge and hatred years after the event and his ability to carry love and loyalty to person years after others would have given up all point to a deeply romantic nature. Even his work – and what many forget for all his political scheming, Magneto is a genius and a devoted scientist. His devotion to his work – and the rage at losing it – it was caused him to nearly kill Kitty Pryde. He is a man ruled by his heart, his passions, with that great intellect put to work after the fact to explain it, and explain it so well that he believes himself.

Clinical Pathology:
Is Magneto a victim or a survivor in the psychological sense of resilience?

Despite the fact that Magneto has a strong will to survive, and strong survival instincts, he is not what psychologists would call a model of resilience. He has remained very much a victim of his experiences.

An external lotus of control:
How an abused child views fate and control.

An external lotus of control is a belief that one’s fate lays outside one’s hands. This is not uncommon in children who have been abused. They were so completely powerless, so helpless, and despite as adult intellectually knowing better, often believe the abuse they suffered was their own fault. Magneto wasn’t the “classic” example of an abused child – it was not his parents or a family member that abused him. Not even a teacher – his headmaster was quite fond of him. No, Magneto was abused by his classmates, by strangers, by the police, by soldiers, and later by medical personal, camp guards, and other inmates. Even his uncle Erich’s intervention when the young man acted to avenge a murder of a Jewish boy by a Nazi in the Ghetto’s reinforced his on helplessness. Strike back against those that abuse you and your people, and you will simply be the cause of more of us being slaughtered. A necessary lesson, to be sure, but at the cost of teaching Magneto that others are in control of his fate, and that even acting in a justified manner only causes more death.

He grew to blame fate. And in denying fate, he absolves himself of responsibility for his own choices. Fate is the fault of his broken children, not his own choices, the damage wrought by children having a terrorist for a father. He blames the past for shaping him while denying his own responsibility for making the choices that have cost so many lives, and lead to so much suffering. He reacts, he doesn’t act. This leaves him feeling as if he never in control of his life.

And, like most who believe the centralizing forces that control their lives are beyond their control, Magneto attempts control EVERYTHING around him. He’s built grand citadels and staffed them with robots, when he staffed them at all. He ‘commanded’ his Brotherhood with ruthlessness. In several instances with the women in his life, when they have attempted to leave him, he has physically stopped them – or in Magda’s case, attempted to. Even his twins, who he no doubt feels a very strong paternal responsibility for, and loves – but doesn’t trust – he attempts to ‘cultivate’ a relationship, built on loyalty rather than love, to bind them to him and control the situation. He was only beginning to learn the error of his ways when Pietro interfered and Wanda created the House of M world – and when Magneto found out how his son had manipulated him, he reacted in sheer blind rage – the result, had Wanda not intervened, would have been him beating his only son to death for accidentally tripping over one of the worse triggers Magneto has – ripping the control of his life away from him.

Survivor’s Guilt and PTSD:
Wanda and Pietro aren’t the only twins in Magneto’s life.

The fact that Magneto suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder seems to be only hidden from himself. The chronic insomnia; routine flashbacks and constant nightmares causing him to relive not only the Holocaust but the death of Anya and the loss of his wife; inability to form and maintain interpersonal relationships passed a superficial level – with the exception of Xavier, leaving him emotionally cut off; the irritability, aggression, and violence that colors his nature; the quickness of his mind to make connections between past negative events and current ones, as well as the permanence of them; and how they rule his thinking – these are all textbook of PTSD. The only difference between Magneto and the “classic” presentation is that rather than avoid the circumstances that caused the trauma, he seeks them out. He attends Holocaust memorials, has visited Auschwitz at least once, placed Avalon of the co-ordinates of Anya’s grave – what better marker for his beloved child than that! – and has visited the marker he set up for his beloved wife.

There are sub fields within PTSD and in Magneto’s case, he crushing load of Survivor’s Guilt. This only makes sense – twice now he has been one of the few survivors of Genocide. Twice now, he has been (or thought to have been) the single survivor of an event which was planned to murder his entire family. And in both acts of genocide, in both losses of family – he had the power to stop it. To save them all. If only he had known. If only he had been prepared.

Guilt & Self Hatred, Depression & Suicidal ideology:
And like Wanda, Survivor’s guilt has created its own set of twins, though there are two set.

Guilt & Self Hatred:
There is no mistaking the guilt that comes with Survivor’s Guilt. The need to apologize for surviving when others died by making one’s life WORTH something – that is Magneto in a nutshell. But coming with guilt is self-hatred. And Magneto has it. In soul crushing amounts. Magneto didn’t just witness the massacre of his people – he HELPED. Had he been fed enough, he would have had have the power to save them. But instead, he helped in not only their murder, but in the desecration of the bodies. While he has mostly convinced himself that he has overcome the shame he once felt by convincing himself he did what he must to survive, he has not been able to do so any more than he has overcome the self hatred. Even his actions as Auschwitz – continuing his smuggling as he had in the Ghettos – which saved lived doesn’t ease that, as it was born partly out of shame for how he was surviving. This is also something he has never spoken about to anyone, save Xavier, and is probably the reason that friendship has remained throughout all – Xavier knows, to Magneto’s mind, the true extent of what horrible things Magneto has done, knows the true extent of what a horrid person he is – and yet, has remained his friend, despite them both acting against each other, although self-sabotaging behavior is normal with that level of self-hatred. He vents his rage, or blinds himself to betrayals he should have seen coming, or simply alienated those who would be his allies.

Depression & Suicidal ideology:
Nor is his self hatred limited to subconscious acts. He may have an indomitable strength of will, but he has been suicidal on and off longer than he has known Xavier. “I should have died…” he has said. At another time, “Too late to do anything but die!” Most recently, he quite calmly asked Xavier to kill him, choosing to die rather than witness the loss of another child. He simply stated he want to be at peace.

Hatred and Prejudice:
To which ‘-ism’s is Magneto guilty of?

There are a few ‘-ism’s Magneto could be accused of, sexism, ageism, racism/speciesism being the ones most often thrown around.

Two of the three can be answered in one example – he willing followed Storm’s orders, without there being an issue, while working with the X-Men. If he were discount someone solely based on age or sex, then there would not have been a frictionless working relationship between them. But there are countless dismissive comments towards females – exclaiming “Woman!” or – even worse – “Foolish Female!” on more than one occasion, and his fairly common “My dear” really isn’t much better. But is this sexism or merely the product of having been raised in the 1930’s? Again, refer to his relationship with women and you see it’s not born of sexism but of a different time. It is masculinity without machismos – he needed flirt or seduce with every female he crosses, or doesn’t underestimate women in their opinions or training – in fact seems to enjoy working with strong women, rather than being threatened by them.

Now, to the bigger question, is Magneto racist? No. Speciesist yes. Without a doubt. Sort of. In general, Magneto is more than a bit of a misanthrope, and clearly guilty of speciesism but at the same time – his wife Magda, Isabelle, Lee Forester – these were all HUMAN women he did love. Two of them at least cared for him as well, despite knowing he was a mutant. He’s shown attending a Holocaust memorial, clearly on good terms with a couple there – he can get passed the attitude and the prejudice, when he stops seeing someone as ‘human’ and sees them as a person, an individual.

HISTORY
31 October 1928: Born firstborn son to Jakob and Edie Eisenhardt, named Maximillian ‘Max’ Eisenhardt, the second child (Ruthie, born 1926) in Germany
The Eisenhardt family was fairly well off, and well integrated Reform Jews. Jakob had fought in ‘The Great War’ and was a well decorated soldier saving the life of a Major Jurgen Scharf, later in life he was a civil servant.

15 September 1935: Nuremberg Laws passed causing some hardship for the family.

1936: Berlin Olympics – Jakob takes Max to Berlin by train to meet with Major Scharf and try to get his job back. Jakob is arrested by the Gestapo and badly beaten. Major Scharf knocked Max to the ground, nearly knocking him unconscious, and leaving him in a crumbled heap on the sidewalk. Many hours later, Major Scharf brings Jakob out, declaring the Gestapo would have killed him without his intervention, and they are now even. Jakob and Max return home by train.

9th - 10th November 1938: Kristallnacht

11 November 1938: Family Jakob, Edie, uncle Erich, Ruth, and Max flee Germany to Poland, where they are forced into the Ghetto. There, unknown to each other, Max and his Uncle Erich become smugglers. They are both quite successful even though the Eisenhardt family, Ruthie in particular, are suffering the effects of starvation. At one instance, when Max witnesses a Nazi kill a Jew, he attempts to go after him with a penknife. He is stopped by his Uncle Erich, who tells him that if he had been able to succeed, many of their people would have died.

19 April, 1943 - 16 May, 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Uncle Erich stays behind to fight in the Uprising. Young Max wants to, but is convinced to go with his mother, father, and sister. This night, young Max gets a life lesson from his father. “You were too YOUNG to hear all that. Ach, you're STILL too young. But Max. Max...Sometimes in this life...you get a MOMENT. A time when everything lines up. When anything is possible. When suddenly...you can make things happen. God help us if we TAKE that moment. And God FORGIVE us if we DON'T. My beautiful son...”

2-3 August, 1944: Gypsy Family Camp murdered – Magda (13) moved to Jewish Woman’s Camp by Max (15), by trading favors. He had been a smuggler in the Ghetto, he continued this trade inside the camps. Years later, Kitty Pride was told how he had saved lives smuggling food and medicine to those in the camp. Moving Magda cost him a lot, and by entrusting her into his care, as far as the other Roma where concerned, her father consented to their marriage.

7 October, 1944: Sonderkommando revolt. Three members of the SS were killed and 451 of the Sonderkommando. Max escaped death this day.

19 January 1945: ‘Max’ and Magda escape Auschwitz II as the camp was being shut down by the Nazi by rushing into the woods and through a hole in the fencing while the guards were busy. One foot, ill, weakened, and near death, they travel to the Carpathians, where Magda still have family.

April: Max and Magda arrive in a Carpathian Mountain village in the Ukraine, Rom community considers Max and Magda wed – Max begins working/learning a trade in construction, while studying at home to make up for his lack of education. Max changed his first name to ‘Erik’ in part to honor his uncle and in part to better fit in with the local population.

22 May: Erik takes a day labor’s job and is cheated out of half his pay. After a fight with his (former) employer in which he accidentally uses his powers to fling a crow bar, he returns home. The man calls the KGB and informs the towns’ people. Magda was at market while Anya slept in the inn where they were staying. When the couple arrives home, their find their home aflame, their baby still inside. Although Erik attempts to get inside, his way is blocked by the KGB, and he is brutally beaten while the building – and his child – burns. When Anya’s corpse hits the streets, Erik uses his powers in a big way – destroying much of that section of town and killed, in fact vaporized, all but two people in a multi block radius – himself and Magda. Unable to fully control his powers, he reaches for her hand, meaning to take it and flee, but an arc of magnetic lightening shoots off and Magda thought he meant to kill her too. She fled, leaving him alone with the body of their child. He scooped up Anya’s body and fled, hearing more soldiers. In the woods, in ground still cold, he buried her, alone and unmarked, before the KGB managed to catch up. There he turned their own guns on them and continued to flee.

Later that year, he takes name of ‘Erik Magnus Lehnsherr’ and had paper work forged by George Odekirk and begins search for Magda.

July: He moves to Israel, claiming he needs to find his soul after searching so long for Magda and begins working as an orderly at a psych hospital in Haifa, met Charles Xavier. There, under the urging of Xavier and other doctors, he begins medical school and completes it within four years, beginning his internship after he takes his boards.

June: Baron Strucker and HYDRA attack the hospital where Erik and Charles are working in the month after Erik takes his boards. Patients, including Gabby Haller, are abducted and the two young men go after them. It is during this time they show each other they are mutants, defeat HYDRA. Erik and Charles fight, and Erik leaves, taking the gold with him the Nazis were hiding.

Soon after he began working for Mossad, pushed in direction of CIA, where he hunts Nazi War Criminals while turning them over the Mossad, and keeping their gold, art work, and other stolen treasures. Some he returns to their owner's families, if the families still exist. Some, belonging to his own family, he keeps. During a hunt for Josef Mengele, he meet Isabelle Romao, a doctor. She becomes his physician, and later the two fall in love and she joins him while he continues his hunt. Isabelle is murdered in retaliation for his working for Moassd and Magneto is born.

For years he wages small 'war', fighting much as he did in the Ghetto's - a guerrilla fight against people he no longer trusted to run the world. Sadly this included almost all of the human population. During this time he fought the original X-Men, and eventually, the new group, is deaged to an infant and reaged (during this time Dr Moira MacTaggert 'tinkered' with his DNA, fixed a problem that had been making him mentally unstable, although he has yet to forgive her) and it was during this time when he was attempting to force the world to surrender their nuclear armaments, he badly injuries thirteen year old Kitty Pride. He believes he has killed her and has, in fact, came close. This causes a crisis of conscious for Magneto, so much so, he was willing to allow Storm to kill him. He hands Kitty's body to Storm and flees, going into seclusion on an island he raised in the Bermuda Triangle. While there he meets Aleytys "Lee" Forrester, who later becomes his lover.

Soon after, with Charles Xavier dying, he askd him to step in as headmaster, which he did. During this time the Morlock Massacre occurs, the students were killed and resurrected, Magneto and Storm joined the Hellfire club, and for this and other reasons, his time as headmaster of the New Mutants came to an end.

Soon after Zaladane kidnapped him and Lorna Dane, leading to adventures in Antarctica. With SHIELD’s assistance, Magneto was able to stop her plans and killed her.

After this, he built Avalon, and had it destroyed.

Shortly after the ‘Magneto Protocols’ were enacted which blocked him from using his powers inside the net – blocking him from the planet. When he unleashed a worldwide EMP, fought the X-Men, ripped the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones and due to Xavier’s actions, Onslaught was born.

Astra kidnapped the comatose Magneto and created a clone named Joseph. During this time he was known as ‘Erik the Red’ and murdered George Odekirk. Afterward, he returned to his terrorist cause, blackmailing the world into giving him Genosha. In the end, when declaring war on the rest of the world, Wolverine got his revenge, and crippled him.

Due to his injuries, he was unable to protect Genosha from Cassandra Nova’s attack and believed to have perished. While a being known as Xorn posed as Magneto, he quietly recovered on Genosha, meeting with Xavier to rebuild the shattered nation. After several months Magneto while helping to clean up Genosha feels/hears a distress call from Wanda. Unable to leave Genosha but conventional means and desperate to rescue his child, Magneto reached with his power, wrapping gravity and magnetic points for form a wormhole. After collecting Wanda holed up on Genosha with her while Xavier and Dr. Strange attempted to help her, again working for months.

When it appeared they wouldn't be able to, Xavier left, to hold a meeting with senior X-Men and the Avengers. While he was there, Pietro sprinted to Genosha to warn Magneto about the meeting. Magneto, not knowing what to do, sends Pietro to talk to his sister while he thinks.

While Pietro is talking to Wanda, he convinces here to create the House of M reality - giving everyone what they want most, or some version of it. Some people can't leave well enough alone and Wolverine, remembering and realizing this is 'wrong' sets out on a mission to take out Magneto, blaming him. On the eve of HoM Magneto's fiftieth birthday, the reunited X-Men attack and the reality is broken. As everything fades to white, Magneto realizes what Pietro has done.

Magneto rested his chin on his hand, making a careful study of the reports over the screen. Most would have given up hours ago, content to search out the mistake in the morning, but Master of Magnetism was no ordinary person. Somewhere in his data there was a mistake. Whether an error in his data or a key stroke mistake he wasn’t sure, but he wanted this simulation run by morning – or at least sun up as it was morning now. Around three, if his internal clock was to be trusted.

Reaching out with his palm upturned, the handless metal coffee cup lifted off the warmer plate near the central panel and landed in his hand. Wrapping his fingers around the warmth, he raised it and took a sip, enjoying the aroma. He stroked his thumb along the cup, the subtle texture to the metal a pleasure to his senses. As he watched the lines of data move over the screen, his eyes focused. Something didn’t seem right. Making tiny motions with a fingertip, the movement slowed to a crawl, backed up, and line by line played out. THERE! A simple inversion in the binary. With a couple soft clacks of the keys, the information was corrected and he began to play the simulation.

Prefect. Just as his research had suggested it would occur. Saving the baseline, he begin reading the other factors, accounting for various adverse weather phenomenons, well meaning but ill trained interventions by others, various mutant powers and their effects, and combinations of the three, and suggestions as how to correct damage done. Satisfied with the work, he saved his data, sent his mug to the sink, rinsing it out and turning it upside down on the towel to dry and stood. He stretched slowly, his muscle knotted and complaining, protesting his long period of sitting in a chair however comfortable it was made to be. As he turned to dim the lights, he stroked a finger along his jaw. He hadn’t shaved since the morning before, and the stubble rasped against his touch. A shave then, and a shower, then perhaps sleep if fate where kind.

Why do you want to play this character: I’ve played some version of this character for over ten years, he’s one of my favorites.

Characters present age: In current Marvel time, it’s approximately 2005, putting Magneto at seventy-seven
Apparent Age: 47-50

Physical Description: Magneto is well built man who appears in his late forties despite being nearly forty years older. Due to the life he’s lead he has numerous well healed scars, mostly from burns. However he does have a set of scars from Wolverine’s claws marring his stomach and exit punctures near his spine on the left. After his de-aging he did retain the tattoo (which reads 24005) he received at Auschwitz at a boy. Despite his apparent youth, his hair is stark white and his actual age it remains thick, and just slightly wavy. Like many mutants, he has blue eyes. While not in uniform, he tends to dress sharply but not formally, and more often than not in bright or bold colors – mostly in reds somewhere on his clothing. He is almost always clean shaven and with neatly trimmed hair. His posture is perfect, with an almost regal manner of carrying himself although it shifts into almost painfully straight when his is in a rage. However, when depressed or ill, he wears more subdued tones, more often in blue. When a heavy emotion or a task carries him beyond his caring for his well being, he’ll neglect to shave.
Between his dress and his baring one might be tempted to label him a “gentleman”. That would be viewing Magneto though rose-colored glasses. While he does enjoy the finer parts of life, he is also comfortable in heavy, thick work clothing, shelves rolled up, hands and forearms stained with grease or oil as he works on something mechanical. He is arrogant, and his reflection bears this out but he is not pretentious.

Distinguishing Features: He has a LOT scars - His back is pretty much covered in scars, there are three punctures on his back less than an inch from his spine, three slashes across his stomach (the line up with the punctures), burn scars to his right shoulder blade, and a mat of scars on his left chest over his ribs a little larger than the palm of his hand, small burns from cooking on his hands, which is also heavily calloused. His arms and legs have minor scars on them, mostly from minor cuts. An oft broken nose, and a tattoo on his left forearm – 24005

Special abilities/talents/powers:
Powers:
they natural or artificial. This makes his power practically limitless, the only stumbling blocks being Magneto's own perceptions of his power and his physical condition at the time.

The main powers he relies on for defensive combat would be creating magnetic force fields, magnetic flight, and matter manipulation. His force field can be quickly expanded to protect large areas, or to include several people and is capable of withstanding some of the most extreme environments, from nuclear strikes, the vacuum of space, and multiple concurrent attacks. Magneto flight is Magneto's main mode of long-term travel. He can accomplish flight in two ways, by either manipulating magnetic fields between himself and the Earth or by gliding along the naturally occurring magnetic lines of the Earth. While the latter is far quicker, it is also far more dangerous and technically difficult as Magneto does not possess speedster reflexes and enhanced senses in order to travel safety in this way he must use his force field to protect himself and must concentrate a great deal on where he is over the planet. When he is flying at any speed at all by any method, he must take precautions normally through the use of his armor and his force field to protect himself from friction and debris. As a result, typically when he is traveling at speeds greater than twenty miles an hour or while flying through debris filled area he has to use his force field.

During offensive combat Magneto uses pretty much whatever he can to win, or failing winning, survive and escape. Using his powers he can create bolts of magnetic force or lightening, electricity, influence and control other forms of energy or radiation, manipulate gravity, and bend or deflect the visible light spectrum around his body.

While he can use his powers to create magnetic fields around non-ferrous objects this is exponentially more difficult for him, requiring so much effort than while weakened he will not be able to do so.

In addition to combat related purposes, his powers make him capable of matter manipulation, of viewing (and to some level influencing and controlling) the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and organic iron manipulation. He understands the theory of using his powers to be a living MRI machine and has perfected it.

Magneto has an almost subconscious link to the Earth's EM field. As a result, he forever knows what is happening to it, draws from it unconsciously, and uses it as a sort of permanent map - meaning he doesn't get lost - at the same time, the Earth's field grants him a sort of odd immortality.

In rare instances, his is able to channel vast amounts of magnetic energy to boost his strength, stamina, durability, reflexes, and speed to superhuman levels. There is a cost to his - and a high one - leaving him weakened and exhausted if not unconscious, causing debilitating migraine headaches and occasionally petite mal and grand mal seizures, and leaving him at a high risk of a brain hemorrhage.

Skills and Talents:
Magneto has been trained to dance the tango to a championship level as well as having a very extensively trained medical background – it isn’t something he often uses but he’s kept mostly current with his knowledge and can use it, if there is no other medical personal around. Similarly, he’s an accomplished carpenter and self-taught architect and engineer. Due to his Uncle Erich’s trade, he was also trained as an assistant in the family jewelry shop, is a fairly good cook although not to professional levels, and has a fairly significant background in successful smuggling of small items. He’s extremely well versed in physics and genetics.

Occupation: His occupation at the point in canon I’m taking him from is Pre-House of M, leaving him as one of Genosha’s rebuilding forces.

Items they possess when they arrive: His uniform that he wore on Genosha – the black tactical one with red, rather than his classic red and purple, and couple changes of clothing. A toiletry kit.
A small heavy metal briefcase which contains a backup of his previous work – mostly scientific in nature, however also contains history accounts, some law – a copy of Genoshan law in full.

He believes he has killed her and has, in fact, came close. This causes a crisis of conscious for Magneto, so much so, he was willing to allow Storm to kill him. He hands Kitty's body to Storm and flees, going into seclusion on an island he raised in the Bermuda Triangle. While there he meets Aleytys "Lee" Forrester, who later becomes his lover.

Soon after, with Charles Xavier dying, he askd him to step in as headmaster, which he did. During this time the Morlock Massacre occurs, the students were killed and resurrected, Magneto and Storm joined the Hellfire club, and for this and other reasons, his time as headmaster of the New Mutants came to an end.

Soon after Zaladane kidnapped him and Lorna Dane, leading to adventures in Antarctica. With SHIELD’s assistance, Magneto was able to stop her plans and killed her.

After this, he built Avalon, and had it destroyed.

Shortly after the ‘Magneto Protocols’ were enacted which blocked him from using his powers inside the net – blocking him from the planet. When he unleashed a worldwide EMP, fought the X-Men, ripped the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones and due to Xavier’s actions, Onslaught was born.

Astra kidnapped the comatose Magneto and created a clone named Joseph. During this time he was known as ‘Erik the Red’ and murdered George Odekirk. Afterward, he returned to his terrorist cause, blackmailing the world into giving him Genosha. In the end, when declaring war on the rest of the world, Wolverine got his revenge, and crippled him.

Due to his injuries, he was unable to protect Genosha from Cassandra Nova’s attack and believed to have perished. While a being known as Xorn posed as Magneto, he quietly recovered on Genosha, unconscious.

Please write a 500 word role play sample, in third person.
Erik Lehnsherr had used many names in his time. Some had even become his name. Right now, he was quite grateful he and Charles had thought this one up. Most people who knew the Xavier family would either assume 'Michael Xavier' was a poor cousin raised in Europe and drawn closer to the Xavier family by his and Charles mutual interests and careers, as well as keeping the family money in the family. Others, who knew more about the family, might assume 'Michael' had been a university colleague Xavier had adopted as neither had family. It wasn’t, after all, a completely odd thing to occur – both young men had lost family in the war, Erik had lost everything. Everyone. It had bene more common in Europe, certainly, but families without heirs often did adopt outsiders to keep the family going. It was rare but it happened. Extremely few - only those who didn't know Charles Xavier was from the US, wouldn't have noticed his 'cousin' had a refined but extremely muddied European accent - and it would have taken someone with an exceptional ear and experience to recognize that it a German accent underlying it all. Erik felt confident that here, provided he got those who knew better to play along that he would have no trouble. And with Xavier not here, that eliminated the other possibility that some had assumed – that he and Charles lived with the assumed name due to an intimate relationship and their desire to not have to deal with other people’s questions. That was probably closer to the truth, even if neither of them admitted it.

This place, he was finding, still threw off his internal compass. Probably due to the loss of his Earth’s electromagnetic field and his body still adjusting. Regardless, he was grateful to be able to fly and kicked himself up to scope out the area. This was certainly a town but a very odd one. The people…were not people. Not really. But the buildings and such where stable and looked safe. He didn’t understand the geography – at all. It seemed to converge with this single point, this village. That confused him, but he’d heard of stranger things – Mojo for instance. The sun beat down hard on his hair and the breeze played over hair. It was nice, the air not polluted as Genosha’s was, but mostly wanted to figure out how to home. He’d read what was posted at the hotel. ‘The Beehive’ indeed. An artificial home for those taken outside their natural environment. He wasn’t happy about what that implied. Deciding he’s learned enough from the skies, he looked for a place to land.
He dropped, landing lightly, and started walking. With his senses alert and his body on edge, he was ready for an attack that didn’t seem to come. In fact, the population seemed to not even notice him. Over all, this place seemed more for the dead than the living. Was this what Genosha had become? Or had he died there? He hadn’t been able to walk, last he remembered. He wasn’t a stranger to paralysis – he’d dealt with Xavier’s medical condition before, and while Xavier’s had been “better” in terms of personal dignity, he wasn’t going to overly question why he was now healed. Not yet, anyway.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Magneto is six-foot two (canon) and heavily built. Marvel lists his weight at 180 lbs. This is completely unrealistic. (see http://www.cockeyed.com/photos/bodies/heightweight.html) In all reality, given his very heavy build, he weighs at least 250 lbs, and probably more. I compare his build to that of a rugby player, and he most often takes full advantage of his large frame, aiming to be opposing. Despite that, he steps lightly.

2. How old is he?
Magneto was born in 1928. From what I can figure, it’s roughly 2003 to 2005 in current Marvel time, which makes him 75-77. However, due to his deaging and reaging, he is physically somewhere between 45-50, depending on his health and general other stressors. He looks about fifty, albeit very good for fifty

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
His posture is borderline prefect. Some of it is his upbringing and some is trying to convince the guards at Auschwitz that he was older and healthy. When he’s angry, his posture is painfully erect – an unconscious mimicry of the SS guards of his youth – and when he’s relaxed he tends to have his hands behind his back or in his pockets.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Magneto is fairly physically healthy, on the surface. He’s very physically fit – but that doesn’t mean he’s healthy. He’s had “headaches” – migraines – for decades “every since my powers manifested” which are occasionally accompanied by nosebleeds or a blown blood vessel in his eye.
He has polycythemia which means his blood is “thick” – he has nearly double the number of red cells as a normal person, and a higher dietary need for iron, copper, and electrolytes. This isn’t an illness but blood loss or dehydration hits him much, much harder.
He’s a chronic insomniac and the lack of sleep takes a toll on him – something not helped by his coffee addiction, given he doesn’t eat enough.
A more serious side effect would be the occasional seizures he suffers.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Magneto is poised. He wasn’t as a boy, he was rather well known to be a klutz – but as he grew into his legs, as his powers gave him a better sense of space, as he started learning to smuggle and steal in order to survive – and fight – he developed a certain sense of grace. His large size is deceptive, as most people who are so bulky aren’t quick, but he is – quite a bit more than most people.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Magneto is quite attractive, and he knows this. While he is called ‘Old Man’ by the Xmen and even refers to himself as ‘an old man’ he doesn’t think of himself as “old” in a negative sense. But he doesn’t really like to look at himself. There’s a lot of self-hatred going on.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
He’s fair skinned, and doesn’t burn. He has a LOT scars - His back is pretty much covered in scars, there are three punctures on his back less than an inch from his spine, three slashes across his stomach (the line up with the punctures), burn scars to his right shoulder blade, and a mat of scars on his left chest over his ribs a little larger than the palm of his hand, small burns from cooking on his hands, which is also heavily calloused. His arms and legs have minor scars on them, mostly from minor cuts.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
His hair is white, not blond, not grey, but white. His hair is thick, which a slight wave, and typically styled just a bit longer than a typical men’ cut leaving his hair looking a bit messy, or wild, but looking polished somehow. He has two small locks of hair that fall into his face, no matter what he does.

9. What color are his eyes?
Blue. A light, grey-blue that look like storm clouds when he is upset.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
An oft broken nose, and a tattoo on his left forearm - 24005

11. What are his chief tension centers?
His Erector spinæ is where he carries most of his stress, bleeding into his shoulders when it gets to high enough levels. He often has a backache as a result.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
He most often wears red, and dressy clothing. But his clothing combined with how clean shaven he is are a window into his mental state – the more depressed he is, the more bland colors he wears and the less he shaves. He does have more casual clothing but simply prefers dress pants and button downs or fine knit sweaters.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
He’s almost always comfortable in his clothing, and it’s always well tailored.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
For the most part, no. At Skye he wears scrubs, and while working in less public functions, he wears a black uniform with tactical belt, and red boots, gloves, and cape. In his down time, he’s dressed nicely, neatly, and sharply, unless he’s working on machinery, in which he wears work clothing.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Briefs. He’s an athletic guy and needs the support.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
It’s rich, fairly deep and VERY reflective of his mental state.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Despite the lack of formal education from age nine to about age twenty-five, Magneto has an even, educated way of speaking. He’s verbose at times, and somewhat old fashioned or flowerly in his speech. He attempts to think before he speaks but it doesn’t always work.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Magneto tries very hard to maintain accent-neutral speech, but it doesn’t work entirely. He learned his English in Israel, and speaks German as a first language. There are very faint hints of both to his speech. He’ll mutter an ‘oy vey’ or ‘oy yoy yoy’ under his breath at times, and slips the occasional ‘tch’ to ‘ack’ into his speech, and when greatly stressed replies ‘ja’ rather than ‘yes’ which most people mishear as ‘yeah’.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
German, Polish, Yiddish, English, Ukrainian, Russian, Hebrew, French, Portuguese,– all canon, and fluent. Headcanon – Romani, also fluent.
Headcanon – varying amounts of Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Hindi (very little), Greek.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
The more distressed he is, the more likely he is to fall back in terms of languages. If he is speaking to someone he knows can understand it, he’ll randomly change languages mid conversation to avoid others understanding. He also tends to curse in Hebrew, Russian, or Romani, rather than in English.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He’s quite good at thinking on his feet, and tends to be good on the fly.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He’s extremely eloquent although when he’s more intoxicated or angry he becomes less so.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Magneto is a ‘super-genius’ really – extremely intelligent, well educated in both books and the streets, but he attempts to downplay his street education.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Both, depending. He makes decisions on his feet, and his instincts tend to be right, but he likes to plan and plot, although he adapts quickly.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
More intuitive than logical and more idealistic than practical although he believes it’s more logical and practical.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
General public education until age nine, homeschooled until university. He took general science courses in Israel while working at the hospital and nearly finished medical school (he never sat for his boards) due to pressure from other staff. Almost everything else has been self taught.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Genetics, engineering, physics – those are his fields and he is very very good at them. Anything science related drives his interest and due to his nature, politics is something he studies. In part due to his lack of education as a youth, he’s always hungry to learn.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
An introvert actually. A public, commanding figure, but strongly introverted. “Since I was a boy, I’ve been drawn to the desolate places of the world” he told Xavier at one point and there is plenty of proof to back this up – between the far flung bases of the world, to ones hung in space, Magneto craves his space and time alone. Oddly, however, he is much more mentally stable when he has company.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
In a word? Bi-polar. Not clinically bi-polar but damn does the man have mood swings and stubborn as all get out.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He’s paranoid, and suspicious of most, really. It makes him more hostile and more withdrawn than his nature would otherwise be. But at the same time, he knows what he is good at, and knows he’s ace at it – and he knows when he’s not in his comfort zone and being outside it makes him very uncomfortable.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React. It’s something that bites him. He doesn’t act, he reacts.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Fight. There was a point in his life where his reaction would have been to run, to flee, but he’s learned that flight only allows others to be victimized.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Desert dry. Little children’s sense of humor will almost always make him laugh, provided it’s not bathroom humor.

God yes. PTSD, depression, suicidal behavior. Mostly, he ignores these and pretend they don’t exist.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Let’s sum up birth to age seventeen and say “WWII” ok? After that, it was his wife leaving him after their child was murdered. Isabelle’s murder. Death and violence have shaped him, more than the love of the relationships that ended in those events – but he still DOES have some ability to love, to trust, and to hope.

14. What does he fear?
Another genocide, those he loves being killed, being helpless. Failing, at everything.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
Peace, really. He’s never KNOWN peace, and it scares him a little but it’s what he wants. To sit on the beach in Genosha, with his children happy, healthy, and nearby, while his grandchildren play in the bay. And Charles sitting beside him, enjoying the sunset.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
There’s a lot really – mostly, his real name. Who he is. Not the avatar but the man inside.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
He loved them. He and his father were very close, and even when he knew his father’s beliefs wouldn’t work, he tried to follow them. After his father was beaten by the Gestapo, Magneto had to be an adult for the family, providing where his father could not. Losing his father was a crushing blow, but watching him die a little more each day, give up a little more each day, did far more damage.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He had an older sister, Ruthie, whom he was very protective of.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Only his children and grandchildren. Luna, his granddaughter, he loves dearly, she’s literally his princess. He wants to foster a loving relationship with his new grandsons, as well. His son, Pietro, he has a remarkably difficult relationship with and they often can’t stand each other.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Charles Xavier, Rogue, Kitty Pryde. The three people who he is not related to that he would bleed himself dry for. The New Mutants and Wicked and Freakshow are surrogate children/grandchildren in his mind. Children in general he latches on hard to.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Charles Xavier. In Israel, while working at a hospital. Magneto though Charles was going to be another insufferable prat. He was mostly wrong.

6. Does he have other close friends?
Not really. Isabelle was, but she was murdered. He doesn’t have friends really.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
Trouble. The paranoia makes it almost impossible for him to trust people.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Family. But his family is mostly made of ‘friends’ so they are one and the same.

Widowed.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Sort of? Him and Charles are lovers, at any rate as well as living together. He wouldn’t call it a ‘romantic relationship’ but it is.

Magda. Not counting Charles, as that’s…separate, Rouge.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Inner strength. Intelligence. Beautiful hands. Someone who understands him.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
Yes, he has three he’s fathered and two which were lab created. Anya is his most beloved, forever and always. She was murdered when she was four. The twins…are touchy. Wanda doesn’t trust him and Pietro hates him. He doesn’t trust either of them, not really, but he wants to and he does love them. But their relationship is almost certainly broken. Lorna was created in a lab and that freaks him OUT a little, but she shares his powers and he is driven to connect with her because of it. She is literally the only other person who sees the world as he does. Zaladane was the other – he killed her before learning of their relation and he’s mostly unconcerned. He has three grandchildren, which I covered already.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
MANY.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
He’s dead center, although mostly expresses heterosexuality due to fucked up headspace.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Sex is actually very important. It’s not casual, and it takes a lot of trust. Even more than most men, when the headspace is bad, he’s impotent, because he really does need to have an emotional connection to who he is sleeping with.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
He’s pretty vanilla, but a long massage of his back and neck will perk him up. Violence and bondage are very BIG turn-offs. Probably not weird, but he sleeps nude, or nearly so and keeps the bedroom clear of loose objects.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Scorpio and he’s textbook.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He’s spiritual, not religious. He’s also a Jew. Somehow this works. The former is not that important to him but the latter very much is.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He does, but under everything, he must survive. He’s never really passed that “survive, no matter the cost” mentality and it gets in the way of morals, although he does have them.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Provided they aren’t preaching hate, he doesn’t care what others believe or pray to.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He hates people. It’s irrational, but it’s there. People kill, they betray you, and you can’t trust them. He’s aware there are those for whom that doesn’t fit but he’ll assume a person is “bad” before anything else.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Very wealthy. Given he can pull metals from the Earth…well, yes. He’s extremely wealthy and he’s comfortable there – he’s been starving, dying for lack of food poor and every level inbetween.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He’s gone from Jewish boy in 1930’s Germany, to Jewish young man in a Roma camp, to a Roma traveler, to a dedicated young aid in Israel, to a Mutant. It’s changed a lot but mostly just to convince him that outsiders are never safe and people will always hunt those they don’t understand.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He drifts between homes. Mostly he lives alone, things are neat, clean, almost cold save his bedroom and kitchen – and his lab is busy, cluttered but organized. Robots abound, some finished, some not, some working, some not. Some are just places to crash if/when things go south, some are ‘home’ – and some are literal castles.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Not a lot. Fine clothing and shoes, too much wine when he drinks, computer parts he can’t make himself.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He’s…a lot of things. Magneto, mostly, and he’s very good at it. Enjoying it…is less important, he feels it’s a duty to his people, past and present. In a perfect world, he’s been an engineer or a doctor – maybe both – and teach on a university level on the side. But he’s accepted that it’s not going to happen.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Engineering. Physics. Space. Science. He researches, experiments, plays chess, or reads in his free time, although he tries not to have too much free time.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He skips meals often, living on coffee with sugar and heavy cream but when he does eat, he cooks, only rarely eating out. He’s Jewish and as such never really developed a taste for pork or shellfish. Growing up in the Ghetto and later at Auschwitz has left him willing eat whatever he needs to in order to survive. He drinks, sometimes heavily.

Meta Post: Magneto and Professor X

I know I get the raised eyebrow of shock ‘cross the Intertubes when this comes up.

I suppose I could add my own meta to this.

But I really can’t see any version of them where they weren’t, at least, in love with each other. Perhaps not a couple, but in love – in fact, ‘in love’ but never acted upon makes a LOT of sense in some canons.

But I’m aware too often people (-uh hem- young people) forget there are many types of love. I mean, there is Agápe, Éros, and Philaand ALL of them mean love – just different types. The question I’ve always had was WHAT type applied to them.

I’ve seen a real (shocking and sickening) devolution in how friendships, specifically between men, are portrayed and excepted to be. I’ve seen is said – and agree – that men are almost taught to be homophobic because men cannot have deep, meaningful, intimate relationships with other men – unless they are lovers. And this has been a fairly recent occurrence. What really cemented that SOMETHING was going on was seeing scans from ‘At Ease’ - which everyone should read. Has some STUNNING pictures let me tell you. (And Sean buddy? Buddy? Pal? ~~Secret telepathic lover?~~ Friend o’mine? I promise to share scans when I get it.) ANYWAY. The book shows a lot of WWII photographs of young men within Magneto’s same generation. Most older than him, obviously, but only by a handful of years.

The casualness and body language shown between men who weren’t taught to fear affection and touch from other men, even when being nude, didn’t always MATCH the body language shown in the comics between Mags and Chuck. It was friendly, yes, but there were…edges there. Some rough, hurty, painful – these two have done some serious SHIT to each other, and betrayed each other on levels most people would consider unforgivable. Mags isn’t one to consider betray forgivable. And yet, what Charles did as far as attempting to mindwipe him was just THAT. Everything he IS, Charles tried to ease. That’s worse than trying to murder him. No one ALIVE remembers his beloved Anya. His family. Isabelle. Everything he’s seen – he’s borne witness to so much. And so many dead. Some of these people only have names BECAUSE he remembers them. And Charles tried to take that away. There is only person who has ever betrayed him on such a deep level and he’s not turned on. His wife. (Magda and that whole mess is a WHOLE other meta post I won’t subject people to. ~~Promise.~~ Ok, maybe, FOR NOW. DAMMIT BRAIN Now I’m wanting to do monthly meta posts on my headcanon FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. A. DUCK, BRAIN WHY YOU DO THIS?!.) So what do I draw from this? The people Mags loves are dear to him, we know this. And certainly, Mags has some intimacy issues. Anyone with the degree of controlling behavior he displays will. And ignoring what happened on Magda’s end – be it ignorance, spite/fear, mental illness – I’ve seen all those theories – on why she abandoned him in the first place (’Cause that’s not the POINT right now, and as I said, a whole other meta post. Which. I. Will. NOT. Do. Right. Now.) looking at it from Mags’ end, it’s the ONE single action he refers back to as proof that humans cannot, will not, ever be able to accept mutants. After everything that he suffered, that nearly destroyed him.

Magneto’s identity has always been important for him. Names, not so much. His name has changed, a lot. If someone were to shout “Max!” in a crowded room, it wouldn’t dawn on him to look around. It someone shouted “Eisenhardt!” it might startle him, but he wouldn’t think HE was being addressed. “Erik”, yes, he would respond. “Magnus”? Ditto. Perhaps – given how recently he’s used it – “Michael” – but more than likely, he’d only respond in if there weren’t that many people to be addressed or if he’d recently used the alias. Ditto with “Xavier”. But for this ONE woman, he was willing to deny everything he was, to find her. To be with her. He could never have been a practicing Jew so long as they lived with the Roma – not that he was. But he couldn’t have even been a secular one – which he is. He would have had to have adopted them as his own people or not have been accepted. And given the reluctance we see Magda showing in moving away from her people – and the areas she ran to when she left him – it’s clear she wasn’t comfortable not being with her people. And while the Camps weren’t just set up for Jews, the ‘Final Solution’ was. In giving up his Jewish identity, Mags was giving up a huge core of who he was, of the forces that shaped him. It’s not surprise to me at all that after he accepted she was gone, he felt the need to ‘find himself’ and fled to Israel. But what she did – whatever the reason – was a huge betrayal. He’d risked so much for her – abuse from schoolmates as children, his family’s (his FATHER’S) disapproval. His life when he was protecting her in the camps. His life after – when he’s shown having to carry her at times when they escaped. His life again, when their home was on fire. And she LEFT him. Everything he’d done, everything he’d given up, all the love he felt for her – and in one instant, one single, solitary instant, she threw it all away. As if it meant nothing. That’s one helluva huge slap in the face folks. And yet – he still loves her. Some of it, certainly, has to do with him loving the idea of her, what she represented (normalcy, a family, hope, peace, love, acceptance) and him having a certain amount of youthful - dare I say, innocent? – blinders on when it comes to her. But the fact is, he’s forgiven her the hurt she caused. (Now…if she showed up alive? Prolly a different story!) And he still loves her.

When Xavier attempted that mindwipe, he wasn’t asking (as Magda was) for Mags to give up his identity – he tried to take it away. That’s a violent, horrible act. It’s been called in some circles telepathic rape – an utter violation of the core of Magneto. And it was. Of all the things Xavier has done – and he’s done a fair amount – that one is pretty unforgivable in my book. He doesn’t even have the “I meant well!” good intentions behind it – not that that would make it any better. And yet…Mags – who really doesn’t know how to forgive, who holds grudges for years, who cannot ever let go of the past, who STILL is angry with Moria MacTagget for “manipulating” his DNA, even if he is mostly over the hostility – forgave Xavier. And is still friendly with him. Still trusts him.

Wait. WHAT?

And what did Mags do? Attacked the one member of Xavier’s team who he KNEW would heal what he was going to do, but knew it would hurt Xavier terribly. Really, most of their fights read a great deal like domestic fights that have gotten frighteningly out of hand. They read, quite often, like a couple trapped in a perpetual cycle of together/break-up/hate/forgive/together. That one couple in every neighborhood, that have gotten together, broken up, gotten back together, broken back up, repeat ad nauseam.

Am I serious? Certainly! Add that in with other things.

Mags has friends – and can carry on friendships, even if they are superficial or end badly – but these are all women. The man really isn’t able to maintain a deep, lasting friendship. There is an exception to both of these – Xavier. Look through his history, and there is only Xavier as the one, not only constant, but only man in Mags’ life who is treated at all as an equal.

Who is the person Xavier calls on when he needs someone he knows will remain (possibly stupidly) loyal to him? Magneto. And let’s face it – Xavier isn’t a saint. Mags has betrayed him a lot. Left him a lot. Put the people he loves – or should love – most in extreme danger, if not tried or threatened to kill. Why would he forgive and be willing to move passed it? In Excalibur, Mags questions him on attempting to save someone, and Xavier points out how many times he’s been asked that about Wolverine. ‘Dreamer,’ Mags replies. ‘Or you,’ Xavier says. ‘Idealist then.’ But there’s humor to it. (Yes, Maggie-pie has a desert dry sense of humor. YES I just called him Maggie-pie. It’s 0530, you people expect me to totally serious? ~~Must not insert ‘Y so SRS?’ comment~~ ANYWAY…Christ, I’m getting to be like Deadpool over here…) Mags KNOWS what Xavier faces for his continued support of him. And again, one must ask “Why?” If Charles Xavier is to be the “Good Mutant” example for everyone, the example of why mutants aren’t to be feared, that “One good Jew” everyone knew, to borrow and paraphrase a famous quote, why, by the Gods, is he maintaining a friendship with a known terrorist, and unrepentant mass murderer? (Yes, some of the murders Mags has committed he’s sorry for. But not all of them. Mags has his OWN list of unforgivable sins.) Because really, way to be a piss-poor example there Chuck.

And yet, Charles DOES. He may call Mags his ‘brother’ on a few occasions – and Mags may return that term, but it’s loaded. Oh Jesus tap-dancing Christ on a CRACKER is it loaded. And let’s not forget the whole “Michael Xavier, cousin to Charles Xavier” thing. I don’t think that would really fool anyone who’s paying attention. Anyone who knows Xavier’s family would know it’s a lie. Anyone who would hear the two of them talk would wonder why one has an American – albeit very proper and upper class – accent while the other has a softer, muddied European accent. And if Mags where to wear his shelves up…well…sorry folks, but I can’t find too many who’d buy them being cousins. ESPECIALLY not those who know their history well. The camp tattoos where a system in and of themselves, and Mags number rather ID’s him as Jewish if you know how to read them. And certainly, if anyone see Mags undressed, that story is blown. A man of his age wouldn’t be circumcised unless he was Jewish (or had a medical problem and there would be other scars). So why the cousin claim? Look at what it would benefit. The first time we see Mags using it – Xavier is very gravely ill. It skirts that ‘family only’ hospital rule nicely doesn’t it? But come on, it’s not going to fool anyone really. Magneto’s face is fairly well known.

It makes no sense, for either of them. None.

Unless they love each other.

And of this, there is no doubt. But which is it? Agápe? Éros? Philia?

As any sibling of an abusive or mentally ill person can tell you – and at times, Mags can be BOTH – there comes a time where you just can’t anymore. You can’t keep reaching out. You can’t keep loving, supporting, forgiving. You can’t maintain or even offer to maintain, a relationship. You. Just. Can’t. So…philia can be ruled out.

Agápe is…a bit difficult to define. Certainly it’s used in Christian texts in referring to Yahweh’s love for the Church. ‘Beloved’ is a good translation, as much as Ancient Greek translate to modern English, which is fairly imprecise and vague as languages go. It’s a profound, deep love. A “truer love”. This seems to almost fit. And it does. But it’s also defined as being an ‘old love’. It takes a long time for love of any type to grow into agápe.

And philia has been ruled out, here too. Because this is no ‘mere friendship’ – and I don’t mean to discount friendship. As a Scorpio, (Read up on us some time yo, we scary.) I know how deep friendship can and does run. I understand those lifelong friendships that you make. But Mags and Chuck BOTH have trust issues. Mags has ever reason to be distrustful of men, doctors, and soldiers. Chuck really hasn’t ever learned to trust anyone – most likely due to his mother’s alcoholism and his step-father’s and step-brother’s abuse – and uses his telepathy and his ability to ‘peek’ into people’s heads as a substitute. And yet, he admits, he wasn’t able to read Mags when they met. Now, grant it, this is what tipped him off to Mags being a fellow mutant and it certainly would keep him interested but trust? No, probably not. Especially to a psychiatrist, when dealing with a man with obvious (to everyone EXCEPT himself) psychological problems and mental illness. And yet…

So it’s probably not philia that drew them together.

That leaves Éros. And it makes a certain amount of sense. Because people in love (or hell, in lust) do stupid, seemingly irrational things. We’ve all seen it – people will go to lengths for a lover they would NEVER go to for a friend or family member. But would two young men, one born in the late 1920’s and the other born in the late 1930’s be comfortable enough to express that?

I think so. Let’s look at history here. In the US, leading men in Hollywood had flings, even long term semi-public (though quiet) relationships with men. Homosexuality was more tolerated in the 1920’s than later in the century, and even if both boys were born after that, their parents were not. Their generation is the one you often hear “Do what you want but keep it QUIET” from, rather than the boomer (and later) generation of “OMG WRONG”. At the same time…Mags doesn’t really consider himself ‘human’ – he’s something evolved passed baseline humans, in his mind. Xavier might not think that but he certainly feels himself above society’s rules. They are both attractive men. Attractive young men when they met. A physical relationship is certainly not out of the question. More than likely, it didn’t progress very far. Or, as I see it, was progressing that far. Perhaps started with some innocent flirting. (Don’t know what that is? Go watch M.A.S.H. and Hawkeye and Hunnicutt interact.) Perhaps some drunken fumbling fooling around. To my mind it doesn’t actually matter. SOMETHING happened. And, let’s face it, Xavier was in a sexual relationship with someone – Gabrielle Haller – during the time in Israel and Mags isn’t the type to cheat. But it still isn’t beyond the possibility that the two young men did have some kind of physical relationship, something broken off, perhaps by their own inability to deal with it. But that bond remained. And that’s what I think happened.

…Boy can I talk a LOT about headcanon. Shesh.

Yes. It was...fumbling but sweet. We were both too young really but...it was sweet. It probably wasn’t as young as people assumed we were, my wife and I didn’t live together until I was seventeen and it was another year and a half before we did more than sleep in the same bed. I think, as far as first times go, mine was by and far on the “good” side than the “bad” side.

7. Are you sexually active? How much so? Are you comfortable with your level of sexual activity?
At this moment I'm not sexually active, which...is fine for now. At this time, it works, and it's not as if it's new situation – I’ve been celibate more than sexually active.

On occasion, although not as often as one might believe for a man who has been widowed at a very young age. Most often waking from a dream or remembering past lovers. For the most part, I find pornography boring.

Five partners. There are only two others I would have liked to include in the list, one was murdered before our relationship could progress, and the other...the timing simply didn't work out. Of course I know how. For the biggest part of my life, it has not been needed. At this point...I still see no further need to. My partners have always been healthy.

No, I have not ever gotten an STI. But as I have several children...yes, it's safe to say I have gotten a woman pregnant. I wanted a family, so I was excited. I’m not really anxious about these risks, although the thought of having sex at all is a risk, because I do not have casual sex and do not have someone I trust that much in my life currently. ~~C. doesn’t count because I’ll always trust him that much.~~

I've never received complaints.

I know I'm quite handsome. I prefer a partner who is shapely and fit, a certain fondness for reddish hair and women with long legs.

I find a strength of character, confidence, and intelligence far more attractive than any physical trait.

I suppose you would say I am dominant although I'm not domineering. Generally speaking I preferring being on top but it's not much of an issue, whatever my lover and I compromise works for me.

I've been told I'm enthusiastic. But yes, my partner's satisfaction is very important, in fact I cannot find my own, if my partner is not fulfilled. I'm also not one for causal relations, and so the emotional is very important. And I pride myself on being romantic with my partners.

Fairly vanilla really. I'm a doctor a so I'm well aware of the more standard kinks, although it doesn't interest me.

I was nine when I first met M., the woman I would marry. I had a crush on her, but wasn't until years later, after the war had forced us apart that I began to have any sexual feelings in regards to her, not that I understood what it was. But as I thought of her one day, of the sunlight in her hair, of her smile, and I felt warm, almost a little drunk. It was a experience, more important as it came on the eve of my thirteenth birthday.

No, I have not.

As a boy in I was...the victim of unwanted attention in the camps but it never progressed beyond that. However I haven't forgotten it, or how it felt, and ensure to not place another in that position with me as the aggressor.

Generally speaking I follow the idea of 'A gentleman does not kiss and tell.' My private life I prefer to remain private. But there always things not open for discussion, it merely depends on who it is with.

24. How do you feel about sex, morally speaking? Beyond the basics, are there any sexual areas – homosexuality, prostitution, whatever – that you have strong, moral reactions to? Where do those come from?
I abhor crimes of a sexual nature. My wife was sexually abused, as where some of the patients I have treated, I am well aware of the scars it leaves. Children being abused in any sort of way infuriates me. But generally speaking, what occurs between consenting adults is their business, although I disapprove of adultery.

25. If you could change one thing about your sex life, would you, what would it be, and why?
I suppose not, really.
