ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Thinker Maker Space of CYENS presents “Finding forms: Creating and capturing body-scale fabric sculptures”, a workshop by resident artists Divleena Singh in collaboration with Dimiitriii.

This is a collaborative workshop focused on creating and 3D-capturing simple membrane forms. It arises from an enquiry into alternative ways of generating forms for sculpture by co-creating with lightweight materials. Stretchable membrane or fabric lends itself to the formation of minimal forms (such as soap bubbles), balanced by rigid sticks and participants’ own bodies—a concept referred to as form-finding.

Participants will begin with hands-on exploration, using stretchable materials and sticks at a hand-scale (small scale) to practice the concept of lightweight membrane sculptures. Building on this, they will collectively create large, body-scale sculptures up to 2 meters high, employing larger membrane fabrics, larger sticks, and their own bodies as part of the structures.

As a next step, the large sculptures will be digitally captured to create three-dimensional twins using photogrammetry. Participants will also have the opportunity to observe and film the dynamic shape changes in these large sculptural forms by moving inside them.

Finally, the outcomes of this collaborative process will be prepared for presentation in the upcoming group show of the TMS resident artists, with credits given to the participants.

Audience:

  • The workshop is open to everyone.
  • No skills are required to attend the workshop.

Workshop Breakdown:

  • Exploring hand-scale forms using stocking or stretch materials and sticks
  • Creating human scale sculptures outdoors using out bodies as structure
  • Capturing and Converting the photographs and videos into digital files

ABOUT DIVLEENA SINGH

Divleena has a background in architecture as well as Industrial design. She uses a combination of curiosity driven, research-through-making and computational explorations to make self-supporting, lightweight forms rooted in tensegrity principles and traditional craft sensibilities. By passing on some control to natural forces and material intelligence, she aims for her work to express that beauty and efficiency are one, and to inspire curiosity and tactile exploration. She enjoys recreational math and microscopy. Currently she is an artist-in-residence at Thinker Maker Space, CYENS, Nicosia.
