Maëlle's Scrapbook

Maëlle is my french teacher's 7-year-old girl, and she is a huge inspiration for me. If you have already seen svtstarlight 's entry regarding this, you'll already know, but in case you haven't, here is the basic idea.

Maëlle has been diagnosed with autism and a neuro-muscular disorder, and during this school semester alone has been on the edge of death too many times to count. If my french teacher cancels a class, as her students we are NOT happy for the break...we are worried about what has happened to Maëlle.

It's one thing to hear about stories like this on tv, and be distanced from it and it's effects...and it's a whole other to be sitting there in class with your teacher breaking down into tears as she tells us her adorable little girl was hospitalized yet again, and in the middle of getting all her blood filtered and changed, and various other procedures there is no guarantee she'll even wake up from.

It's a lot for a 7-year-old girl. It's a lot for anyone. But Maëlle has a strength that touched our entire class, and everyone who hears of it. She smiles, she plays like the child she is, and is such a well of optimism and positivity you can't help but feel it as well.

It makes me feel selfish for taking what I have for granted. It makes me cry to think of what she and her family goes through on a daily basis, just like so many other children and their families all around the world.

And it makes me want to do something to brighten this precious girl's day even by a little.

The idea of sending her pictures and notes was thought up by svtstarlight , and we're expanding it to everyone. And I mean everyone. This is going to be a scrapbook for her, with pictures, drawings, stories and little notes from all around the world. Canada, USA, Singapore, Japan, Australia, England, Ireland, France. We want to draw in as many participants as we can, to help this little girl smile.

So what are we asking of you? Anything. Anything you want to send to her. The first deadline will be in a week (Monday, May 17th) which doesn't allow for much, but this will be an ongoing project so perhaps in the future we can organize small gifts to be sent, material things that she can hold in her hands. For now though, we ask for everything to be submitted electronically via the internet. Pictures and drawings will be printed out on good paper, notes printed in script, stories on lined paper, and everything will be scrapbooked.

Then Maëlle will receive the scrapbook...which is the best part of all.

As a school and community, we're looking to raise money in support of Polar Plunge, a charity that supports the Special Olympics. Our magazine would love some help with our holiday gift drive

Everyone - Synchronized Chaos Magazine (which is online at http://www.synchchaos.com) is sponsoring a holiday drive for the Ford family, whom I've personally known for years. They have periodically submitted work and contributed to our magazine - some of Kristie's writing is already live for our upcoming December issue. The children are talented vocalists and graphic artists, and the mother has serious writing ability and I continually encourage her to go professional, as much as she can from home.

The two teenage children live with their elderly grandmother, as Kristie (the widowed mother) lost custody of them as she could not properly care for them due to her illnesses (melanoma skin cancer, narcolepsy, ADD, and the legally disabling mental illness of Delusional Disorder.) Kristie receives $860 a month disability income, $400 of which goes to her rent, and she sends as much as possible of the rest to her mother and her children. She's survived several mentally and physically abusive relationships and is also dealing with court costs and legal issues as a result of these.

There aren't too many resources in her area to help low income families...what does exist in San Rafael is targeted towards another very poor area of town, not where they live.

Kristie has a teenage boy (16 years old) and a teenage daughter (15 years old) and three nephews and nieces: a five year old boy, a six year old girl, and a six month old baby girl.

Food and gas money is a struggle, and she's gone hungry several times in the past few months. They cannot afford anything special for the holidays. So, our magazine staff is putting together a Christmas gift package for the family, and I'm inviting all my professional colleagues to contribute. This is our holiday tradition...every winter we pick our neediest contributing writers/artists and host a donation drive for them with their consent.

She gave out her address for me to privately distribute...but I can also pick up and deliver any gifts or donations, so if you'd like to help, please respond and let me know and let me know where you are.

Eric Needs a Heart Transplant

Eric De La Cruz is 27 years old, and is in dire need of a heart transplant.

Eric has been turned down for a heart transplant list because he is on Medicaid, and there are no transplant facilities in Nevada.

Eric needs to go to California under the Medicare Disability program. He has been rejected twice, and the next appeal hearing is in one year.

Eric has Severe Dilated Cardiomyopathy with an EF of 15%. His kidneys are having trouble because of his heart. His creatinine levels are high, his blood pressure is very low and he keeps retaining fluid. The medications that his doctors have him on are no longer working. He is currently on 3 different IVs.

Projected costs of Eric's transplant are to exceed $150,000. As of this video's production, $4,000 has been raised. We have a long road ahead of us. Even if you can only spare a dollar or two, please donate.

I am a 19-year-old girl just finishing my freshman year of college. I am creative, enthusiastic, hard-working, determined, both shy and friendly, insecure, neat, moody, gentle, quiet, sensitive, strong, hopeful, dedicated, devoted, loyal, passionate, and curious, and I have a speech defect.

My whole life I have been unable to pronounce the /r/ sound correctly. For most of my childhood, it hasn't been an issue, but throughout high school and college it has become a significant handicap. It has reached the point where I am often severely depressed as a result of my speech defect--it is like a bubble surrounding me and isolating me from other people. Perhaps this seems melodramatic, but unless you have had something like this--any kind of physical defect that makes people uncomfortable--you can't know how painful and discouraging it is. I would certainly say that my disability has taken a huge toll on my mental and emotional health and my social life. I am worried I won't be able to get a good job to pay off my student loan debt, because employers will be put off by my speech impairment. Every single day, I have to at least once with people ignoring me when I talk, not understanding what I say, or drawing back from me in disgust, like I smell bad.

Sadly, health insurance will not cover speech therapy for me, even though I need it so bad--so as a last result, I am turning to the kindness of strangers. I am going to try to raise $1,000, which is how much I need to have a 45-minute speech therapy session every week this summer (it is $85 per session). It's a lot of money, I know, and there isn't any way for anyone to know if I am telling the truth, or if any of this is legitimate...I am just going to hope that some people out there have faith and trust me and can reach out and donate anything, any amount. All I need is for $100 people to donate $10 each!

I cannot express how much it would mean to me. My family doesn't have much money, and I need help very badly. Please consider donating to help me pay for speech therapy.

Child's Play Charity

A few years ago, I became interested in a charity called Child's Play. The charity was set up by the online comic about games and gamers known as Penny Arcade. Maybe some of you have heard of it. The charity was created as a direct result of people like Jack Thompson insisting that ALL gamers are murderers in the making. Our response? Over two million dollars raised since 2003.

The way Child's Play works is the charity has a network of over 45 hospitals set up all over the world, and new hospitals are being added every year. The charity sets up Amazon wishlists for the hospital that includes games, toys, and books - all ranging between less than $5 to $400 (for consols like X-Box 360s and PS3s). Gamers can choose a hospital of their choice and pick one or more items to purchase for that particular hospital. Amazon will then ship the item(s) directly to that hospital. Easy as cake!

If you can't decide which hospital to choose, you can donate money directly to Child's Play's paypal account, or you can send money to the address on the Child's Play's homepage.

All the toys, games, and consols stay with the hospital so that all kids have a chance to play during their hospital stay. Instead of being bored and constantly reminded of their illness, children can play on a DS or PSP in their bed; they can play multiplayer games with other sick kids on the X-BOX 360 you provided for them. They can read books, play with dolls, and forget about their troubles for at least a little while.

Best of all, YOU get the gratification that you're doing something to make a difference in these children's lives. They may not know you by name, but your contribution - whether it be $1 towards a Child's Play fundraiser, the new DS system you picked out, or a $10 game - will create a little bit of happiness during their trying times.

Synchronized Chaos Webzine's Benefit Art/Writing Auction

Synchronized Chaos (http://www.synchchaos.com), a new art/cultural/variety webzine inspired by the mathematical concept of chaos theory (systems with organization that's not easily apparent until you look more closely at their beginnings) is hosting a benefit art/writing auction/sale, where some of our featured artists (or any of our volunteers) will create a personalized piece just for you or someone else, at your request. Great for holiday gifts or a special memento to have at home.

Where the funds go:
Funds raised through this auction will be split between two current projects for those in the Synchronized Chaos network of family and friends - Christmas presents for the kids of a single mother on disability who’s in the process of writing for us, and a hospital bill for a friend of a contributor who works in food service and has no way of paying. Documentation is available to back up these needs and we will gladly send documents to anyone who requests them.

We plan to host these auctions occasionally for the holidays or as the need arises. The process of choosing beneficiaries is democratic - please let us know on our Facebook/LiveJournal groups or by emailing the magazine or commenting here if someone needs help and we’ll do what we can to set something up if you can provide some sort of documentation verifying the need.

I've always been into helping those less fortunate. I sell handmade jewelry on my myspace [link on my profile]. One of the things I've started doing is making plastic ribbons in various colors, to represent the different causes. They are cheap enough to buy and show your support and all donations go towards that cause. For example, if you buy an AIDS awareness ribbon [these are necklaces, by the way], that money will go toward the HIV/AIDS fund. And so on.

I have a new idea! I've been trying to think of a way to both curb my selfish spending to helping the homeless. I got this idea only a few minutes to an hour ago while reading my local newspaper. The front page is about homeless people living in downtown Memphis [near me; i live in Cordova]. Any time you go downtown, which I do often, you will see people sleeping on the streets and barely any cover in this freezing cold weather...

Every now and then, good samaritans, like my ex-boyfriend, Dylan, will gladly offer beggars on Beale Street $10. But, I want to do something more.

Through my creativeness, I want to sell handmade things and whatever else to raise money for these people. Donations, checks, cash, anything. I want to set up an account where all of this money goes. When I get a substantial amount, I am going to buy food, blankets, and even toys for these people. When I go downtown, I want to have cash on me that I can hand over. I either have less than $20 or my debit card on me, so I never have a chance to offer anything.
