20inspirations: mood ring

okay, here's a little explanation on my colour choices. idk, I think my approach was a little weird, but it worked for me. I didn't colour based on the emotions I saw, but I let myself be led by the atmosphere of the picture, the scene I remembered and the personality traits of the characters. does that make any sense?

#1 | okay, I hope some of you actually watch the show, otherwise this'll be hella boring and a pile of nonesense :| this scene happened early on in the show. spartacus just got enslaved, he's not broken yet. he is still stubborn, proud. and it's andy. it all made me feel pretty nostalgic, which is why I turned it into this brownish colour, trying to make it look a little withered. like from an old history book. the text was an experiment. I don't do text most of the time, but I thought it looked nice for once and left it there.
#2 | this was such a sad, heartbreaking scene. this icon could've turned out blue, but I went for a blazing yellow. why? I wanted to underline the strength of the sun, which seems to weigh on his shoulders much like his pain and wounds.
#3 | I'm still not sure I like this icon. maybe because it's more metaphorical than anything else. I added the sea and a clock (in case no one could tell, which I suspect) and mute colours to portray how batiatus' time was running out the second he showed up on the screen. the bitch had it coming.
#4 | lucretia has always been such a complex character. on the one hand she was a scheming, mean liar, and on the other I believe she truly loved batiatus and just did everything in her power to see him happy. anyway. at one point she got repeatedly raped and her tormentor made her wear that same red wig every time. I made the deep, blood red the focus of the icon to represent her pain and shame, yet she (her face and the border of the icon) are a pure white to portray her role as the victim.
#5 | spartacus, dark and wounded, underlined by a grungy texture, looking back onto his once promising past; a lush green background.
#6 | agron! he is a very temperamental man with a big mouth. shoot first, ask questions later sort of guy. he is laughing his foe in the face here, not fearing death nor a beating. I thought a light violet represents mockery best.
#7 | this scene :c spartacus is losing everything here. his people, his wife, his life. he is taken by surprise, gets beaten and captured. he was shocked and blinded by it, which is why I made this icon a light yellow.
#8 | lucretia again, though this picture made me think of her scheming side. I thought a drop of light red in the middle of a bilious green background would show best what a mean viper she could be.
#9 | this icon is unusually light. at least I rarely make these sort of icons. however, varro was such a sweet, good character and I thought a light, light pink fits best to his innocent personality.
#10 | idk how lucretia even slept. with all these lies and constantly balancing on that thin line between shame and glory, trying to uphold the status of her house... she looks uneasy here, afraid. I tried to fit all that into the colour of her shawl, a bit of a murky, rotten green.
#11 | okay, I used yellow a lot in these icons, but I connect that colour with blind, hazy pain and the show practically lives on pain, so there you go.
#12 | again a mixture of yellow (for pain, danger) with a muddy brown (doom). spartacus was forced to fight his first gladiator fight in the arena here. the gladiator seemed so all-powerful and threatening in that scene, while spartacus was bare and "unskilled" as a gladiator.
#13 | aw, bb!crixus at the very beginning of his career. he was so confused, an animal that was thrown into the pit to fight for his life. there was always so much despair in his eyes. red and black fit best in this case, imo.
#14 | this is a bit weird to explain. I'm sure there is someone out there who knows about the history at hand a lot more than I do, but here we go: despite what his nickname might tell you, spartacus was not a spartan, as far as I know. yet that helmet always reminds me of the movie 300 (the whole style of the show does) and so does the colour red (anyone who has seen the movie might agree - all the blood, the capes etc). so yeah.
#15 | that scene was absolutely amazing. if you didn't get spoiled enough by now already, don't continue reading this. the icy blue is obviously connected to that chilly moment where you realized lucretia was still and actually mad, and it's soiled by a creepy amount of red blood.
#16 | lucretia again. I told you that character is complex! I've iconned her mean side, her helpless side and her mad side. this icon represents her love and passion. a mix of bordeaux red and cream.
#17 | ugh. I must admit I love that icon. maybe no one'll get it, but I'll still be proud :| this is a picture of andy as spartacus, and it's splintering, revealing the image of liam as the late spartacus actor. I tried not to push the colours too much. I wanted it to look like it was fading a bit, like andy's image.
#18 | alright, I'll not pretend this icon holds any meaning. I liked the armor and that's why I picked this cap XD maybe you can connect barca's greed for gold with the colour of the icon to make it count, idk idk?
#19 | oenomaus. he used to be the gladiator back in the day. he's always been a wise, powerful character, someone who was respected by everyone. I added a yellow shine to the icon to underline his gloriousness ♥
#20 | have you ever been so blind with rage everything turned a bright white around the edges of your sight? I hope not, but when naevia is raging I always get the impression that's what happens to her. I'm not sure I got enough white into this icon, her skin is dark after all.

so, I looked at every post I made in 2012 and picked 3 of my favourites from each post. I was surprised to realize that the sherlock holmes battle had actually happened that year. it feels ages ago, but I remember how incredibly popular it got (which I'm still very proud of). looking back, I actually tried a lot of different styles and colours this year. brown, yellow and orange were colours I really got into for a while, yet I regularly returned to my favourite: green. yet again, I didn't use too much text on my icons (but I'm getting a little more comfortable with it) and centre crops are still my drug.

overall, I didn't icon nearly as much as I'd wanted to. I had several creative draughts, and then not enough time. which led me to the decision to leave magicmachine. it felt like the end of an era to me, though that doesn't mean I wanna quit. not at all. iconning is still a great hobby of mine and I want to keep doing it for a while, despite the shift I feel in the community... and I'm not really sure where my place is rn. either way, what with life having changed to the better for me in 2012, I hope to produce a lot of icons in 2013 I can be proud of :)

this is an icon dump, basically. most of these are pretty mediocre, but I wanted to give a sign of life and start over for a new, proper and hopefully better batch :) if time permits it. I've tried iconning for weeks, but my new job (and actually moving out) wouldn't let me so far. clearly, a day needs 48hs.

I've finally come around to submit some icons for theiconquest. not too many, but what with my muse being a little fickle lately, I thought I better take it slow and don't pressure myself (thank god for no deadlines!). especially the game of thrones ones are very different from what I usually do. any thoughts on those would be very much appreciated :)

step 1 - basics
the first couple of things I do with a cap are always the same. I size it down a bit (it's always something between 550px - 700px width) and add my first screen and softlight layer on top of the base. after fiddling with the opacities, I decide whether it needs a curves layer or not (I opt for it most of the time. my curves layers always look something like this) and add a neutral black to wite gradient on top set to softlight (if I already know what colours I wanna end up with in the end, I sometimes use a yellow/black or purple/black gradient). this ~should prevent the icon from looking too flat in the end :)

bonus tip: if your subject has dark hair though, try to erase the light part of the gradient that covers the subject's hair, as it often makes it look pixel-y otherwise.

step 2 - colouring
then comes the actual colouring part. I've never learned the art of colour fill layers, so all I use is colour balance and selective colouring. I thought the cap already looked pretty nice in itself, so I upped the yellows and oranges for her skin and some magenta for her dress. I'm pretty sure I did her skin and dress with two different colour balance layers and masked the background, so that the colours stayed somewhat muted. it made sookie and her dress pop out a lot more :D

step 3 - cropping
once satisfied with the colouring, I merged everything and dragged the downsized cap onto a 100x100px canvas. I'm not very creative with crops and almost always go for center crops, so that's what I did.

step 4 - adding textures, etc
once satisfied with the colouring and crop, I dublicate my new base and blur the hell out of it. I used gaussian blur at 5.0 and surface blur at ca 8/18. the result then looks something like this with the subject still vaguely recognizable.

bonus tip: you can simply drag it on top of your base layer, set to normal, and lower the opacity down to 9% - 15%. this gives your icon a nice, soft glow without altering the colours too much. it helps soften some hard edges :)

for this icon though, I set the blurred layer to softlight, opacity 59%, and erased the bottom right corner, because I wanted one point of the icon to be darker than the rest. THIS SOUNDS WEIRD IK, but I always feel like this keeps an icon well-balanced, what with light and dark parts alike? it doesn't turn flat that way.

so, I really loved the colour of her dress. it's what drew me to the cap in the first place. naturally, I wanted to pick some purple-ish textures to emphasize that :) first, I used this this texture (maker ???), put it between my base and the blurred base layer, and erased everything that wasn't her dress. I set it to screen, opacity 16%. on top of those layers, I then used this texture (maker ???) and set it to screen, opacity 61%. I loved the purple-ish glow it created on the left side of the icon. after that, I picked a third texture (maker ???) and set it to overlay, opacity 53%, fill 14% as a support of sorts. it darkened everything a tiny little bit. all in all, these 3 textures helped enhance all the purple :D

now, I'm not sure whether it is a texture I added or whether I used the screencap itself and just blurred it a hell of a lot. either way, this is what I dragged on top of everything else. I set it to normal, 38% and carefully masked a couple of parts (you can see my masks etc below). it gave the icon a nice, dreamy feel to it.

doing that, I lost a lot of contrast. I created a new, empty layer and drew a thin, black line with a soft brush on the left, set it to softlight, 20%. then I added a level adjustment layer (22, 1.00, 244), opacity 27%, and a selective colouring layer (whites - blacks, -56) to make the whites in the background pop a little more again.

basically, I was done with this icon. I sharpened the base layer (don't forget to then go to edit - fade sharpen, and lower it down to something between 25% and 30%) and saved it. BUT I felt like experimenting a bit, so I went browsing through my (messy) texture folder and found this (maker ???). to say I knew what I wanted to achieve with it would be a lie. all I knew was it had some purple/violet shades in it, as did my icon. I simply slapped it in between my texture layers and set it to softlight. the result was rather weird, but once I erased the top part it actually melted well with her dress and I left it that way!

this is it. here are my layers & masks (the base is called colour fill, because I always fill the canvas I drag my cap onto black to prevent white lines), in case anyone's interested. I hope this tutorial is helpful to someone :) thanks for reading!

sadly, I have to admit I'm stuck in another icon draught. I do want to icon, but nothing comes out quite the way I imagined it. it's frustrating as hell, and to think I have actually so much stuff to finish... this is also why I haven't completed any 20inspirations themes these past few months. needless to say, I feel incredibly bad about this. especially because I'm also missing the last opportunity ever to take part. BOO :c I mean, I can still do the challenges at another point in time, and I'm sure I will at some point, but yeah. it won't be quite the same.

I am also very sorry to say this, but I won't be finishing the requests. I had half of them done, but the rest of you are waiting for so long already, I don't think it's fair of me to keep your hopes up. I feel like I really need to free myself of any pressure, if I want to keep iconning right now. please accept my apology :c I was and still feel very flattered you all requested icons from me, but sadly I can't finish them...

guys, you guys! I finished my 20inspirations claim and god was it a struggle near the end! I don't know what it was, whether my muse just decided to walk away or whether it were the many indoor scenes I had to work with or the same face over and over, IDK, but I am done. PHEW. the theme was down the rabbit hole, we were supposed to do something crazy, out of the box like. now, some of these don't feel out of the box at all, others are way over the top. idk, I feel a bit weird about these, but I'm glad I worked on them until the very last minute :3 my claim was sherlock holmes from the bbc series.

1 | photo | first of all, I tried to go for dark icons a lot in this batch (didn't always work out, as you can see) as it's not something I usually do. I always wanna go bright and colourful. idk whether you can see where my inspiration came from, if you look at the photo,
but it's the ~hair and especially the waves in the last one, which is why I implemented this wavy texture on top of it (I fell in love with that one. srsly.)
2 | photo & word: duplicate | not much to say about this one. it's sort of the little brother to my default movie!sherlock :3
3 | photo | again, a dark icon. I also tried to do some proper blending. I usually go for blocking ~~because I'm lazy~~, because blending is a much bigger struggle for me. finding the right caps and a colouring that fits them both etc etc IT'S DIFFICULT OK?!
so, I took the plunge this time. I still feel like there's something missing though.
4 | graphic | sooo~ proud about this one! I just dig monochrome colouring lately and I upped the orange a lot more than I'd usually dare + I actually picked a texture that is not supposed to change the light or depth of the icon, but just adds some symbolism to it.
5 | word: duplicate | boring icon is boring.

6 | graphic | another somewhat darker icon. I tried not to go for my usual shade of green and tried to copy the one in the LOST graphic posted in the inspiration post + I added some weird looking text.
7 | word: experimental | AHAHA. I made this after I read pamkips's paint tutorial. the result is undoubtedly strange, but it fits the theme, I suppose. sherlock looks like the joker here.
8 | texture | and again, another unusually dark icon from me. I really like how this turned out, though!
9 | word: multicolored | another outdoor scene made dark. not my style at all! and I went a little vibrance-happy. I remember I liked the hint of purple on his skin there, while the rest of the icon is mainly blue.
10 | word: bizzare | I avoid night scenes like the plague and when I picked the cap I thought I was doomed, but hey! I think this is actually one of my top 5 of the batch. I like the grungy feel to it.

11 | word: fade | just another dark icon, I don't have anything else to say here :c
12 | word: multicolored | ugh, this icon could have been so much more. I love the sharpness of it, but the yellow spots on each side of the icon don't wanna harmonize. IDK WHY, I tried to fix it for a long time, but ngh it just got worse, so I left it at that.
13 | icon | shamelessly inspired by one of the icons provided.
14 | word: conflicting | I CHEATED OK?! there was just so much sherlocksherlocksherlock, I had to icon a different face just for once, and I mean, sherlock is still in there, so it counts y/y? again, weird blending stuff and text I normally wouldn't do.
15 | word: crazy | what is this? I must have been on a LSD trip I have no recollection of.

16 | word: intense | that scene. let me get this straight, I still find benedict's face absolutely weird and a little off-putting, but that scene was the hottest thing I've seen on tv in a long time, ngl. I went for some pale lighting and obscurring crop to distract from the fact that I used a centre crop AGAIN.
17 | texture pack | another attempt using pamkips's tutorial without creating the joker all over again + I liked that painty look of the textures. also one of my top 5!
18 | word: duplicate | some good old blocking with a brownish colouring I'm usually rarely going for.
19 | word: experimental | I think this is my #1. I'm not sure people will see what I was trying to do, so I'll just write it down here: the texture over sherlock's head is the skull of a lioness (or something); it's supposed to create a connection to the episode the cap is from (the hounds of baskerville).
I didn't have a dog texture at hand, so I used this one (as it's more frightening / beast-like anyway), and idk I just dig the idea.
20 | word: off-colour | I'm ending the batch on another dark icon to make you think I actually had a plan, lol. ~~IT'S A TRAP.~~

I really don't like being as inconsistent as I am lately, and I apologize for that :c here is another 20inspirations claim not finished. I started out with lip from shameless, then figured I was too new to the show/caps to manipulate them into a pale and a vibrant set. then I picked lost. first an episode. then a character. and then... I just gave up. sad, but true. so here is what I have + request icons for spg_spn_girls + random stuff.
