Today I want to make an early birthday present to a very special friend of mine and promote some of her work. totemwolfie is a very talented artist and sells some of her amazing work over @ etsy. She’s creating dreamcatchers and paints dragons and other mythical creatures. The details are stunning but convince yourselves. Here are two examples of her work:

One moment of your time, please!

Since I first watched „The Little Mermaid“ in 1989 I have been obsessed with mermaids. I was fascinated and wanted to be one myself. From that day on I swam/dove with my legs and feet together and collected all things mermaid-y. Three years ago I fulfilled my biggest dream and created my own first tail (photo below) and surprised a little girl at her birthday.

She was amazed, clapped her hands and jumped up and down. All her friends asked me hundreds of questions and couldn’t get enough of touching my soft tail. Unfortunately this tail wasn't made for water and when the little girl asked me to have a swim with her all I could do was deny her wish and explain that I had twisted my tail. I promised I’d have a splashy swim next time I'd meet her. She was almost crying, which broke my heart, but understood quickly and begged me to go to the next fish doctor. *LOL* Seeing all those happy faces, sharing their excitement was one of the most wonderful experiences in my life.

Even if I’m a land-locked mermaid, I want to keep my promise to the little girl and fulfill HER biggest dream and that of so many others.

Since magic_art has grown to be such a wonderful community, made by wonderful members who are really dear to our hearts, I thought we could move something. We have over 1500 members (!) and if only half of you would donate $1.50, I could order a swimmable tail from themertailor.com and could keep my promise and surprise many other girls and boys. I also try to save as much money as I can, which will be difficult with lots of round birthdays coming up and car parts to buy. Still, I'll try my best (watch out for the ticker on magic_art's profile!).

Also magic_art would get its own mascot: a mermaid created and shaped by our members!!! How, you may ask? It’s not only the money, you will also have a say about the tail colour and my mermaid name! AND you’ll get one customised icon with your username (or the name of your choice) too, using one of your interests on your profile as theme. All you have to do is donate $1.50 (or more if you want and are so generous) on my PayPal account. There you can leave a little message in which you write what name you want for your icon, which tail color you prefer and a suggestion for the mermaid name. (You can see all the available colours HERE!). If you donate $10 or even more, you will also get a customised colourbar!!!

I know we can create something wonderful together. Let’s make this world a better place for children in which their dreams can come true.

1. We do not customise icons. They stay the way they are posted, so please don't ask us to add/remove text, or use another font, or anything of the sort.

2. We do not take requests. While we welcome suggestions, please don't expect us to create whole sets based on your idea(s).

3. About specials:

we won't post the textless versions of the icons, we never did and don't intend to do so in the future;

we won't make more icons than already stated: if it's only for the first 30, then all later comments will be ignored, so please check the number of comments before requesting;

one icon per person only, please don't request more;

the icons aren't of the mix 'n' match sort, e.g. please don't ask us to make icon #1 with the font of icon #4;

please let us know when you have picked up your personalised graphic.

4. These should go without saying. Please:

credit all the graphics taken from magic_art, not just the icons! If you're using one of our banners or mood themes, make sure to credit us somewhere in your profile;

do not alter without permission: please check with us first before changing anything;

textless icons are not bases, so please do not use them as such;

do not hotlink: we won't re-upload the graphics if we run out of bandwidth;

do not repost our graphics elsewhere or claim them as your own, that's called stealing.

Another thing we wanted to mention:
Skin colour, origin, gender or body shapes are not relevant when we look for pictures for our graphics. It's the beauty of a picture that speaks to us, the way it reflects the message we want to convey.

magic_art goes Members Only!

We would be very grateful if you could take the time and read this entry, as a few things have changed here at magic_art and we would like our members to be aware of them. Thank you! :)

Sad, but true: last week-end we had the first hotlinking incident in the history of magic_art! Because of that, we had the unpleasant task of switching to a new hosting account, re-installing our layout and replacing broken links. These troubles left aside, we cannot stress enough how bad hotlinking is. It's stealing, and while we cannot possibly know who is responsible for it, we intend to take measures to prevent such a thing from happening again.

After a lot of thinking and long discussions, we have decided to make the community Members Only. That means that you will have to join in order to see the posts. This way we hope to achieve a more cohesive membership, as well as a more personal relationship to all of you. :)

Another change is that membership will be moderated, meaning that all new members will be asked to wait until either me or nerhegeb approve their request to join. Basically, we want to check if members to be give proper credit for their icons. Don't worry, it won't take ages until you're approved: nerhegeb and I are both online on a daily basis, and we check our e-mails frequently (perhaps more often than it's healthy, heh!), so if you do credit your icons, you'll become a member in no time at all. However, please be aware of the fact that we're on CET (Central European Time), so you'll have to be a bit patient if you request membership at a time when it's the middle of the night here. *g* ;)

Speaking of credit, we would like to emphasize again its importance to us. Every single time we post graphics, we ask that you please credit magic_art. This is not optional, it's a rule. If you don't feel inclined to abide by it, it's alright and no hard feelings, but then please refrain from using our icons. There are plenty of communities and icon makers out there who don't require credit, so you might want to check them out. ;)

We, however, require credit, because we put a lot of time, effort and passion into our graphics. We research the themes that we are doing, try to find original, thought-provoking pictures to illustrate our ideas, and then spend hours on end working on them until they're made into icons and ready to be shared with you all. We do not ever post anything we are not happy with, or that we ourselves wouldn't use. We strive for quality, not quantity, and try to bring you icons you wouldn't find elsewhere. We do all of this gladly, because we truly enjoy making graphics and sharing them with you. All that we ask in return is that you credit our work. It's easy, only takes a few moments, and we are always here, ready to help you in case you don't know how to do it. There is a great difference between someone who doesn't know how to credit and asks for instructions, and somebody who isn't willing to credit in the first place, and simply chooses to ignore our wishes.

That being said, we also intend to go through our members list and see if everybody is giving proper credit in case they're using our icons. This is nothing personal, and we are not, Gods forbid, controlling your journals or anything of the sort! We really have better things to do with our time, believe us. ;) We just wish to make sure that all members are aware of this crediting rule, and abide by it. If we find out that you haven't given credit, we shall contact you and ask you to do so. Refusal, or a lack of reply from your part, will result in your removal from the community.

As already mentioned, this was not a decision we have made lightly. From the very beginning, magic_art had been an open community, and we had intended to keep it that way. We are also aware of the fact that the vast majority of our members are wonderful people who have always respected our wish to be credited, and we are grateful for that and their continued support. :) As it's often the case though, it only takes one person, or a small group of people to ruin it for all the others. *sigh*

Reasons Why We Reject Applications

1. You don't credit your icons. If you don't know who made one of your icons, please write "iconmaker unknown" or something similar in the keywords/comment field. Also, if you use icons you made yourself, please state so, otherwise we won't know that they're your icons.

2. You are a member of an icon stealing community, or are a well known graphics thief.

3. Your account is brand new (not yet a month old). Sorry, but there are so many sock puppet accounts out there made just for stealing icons, and we don't want to take that risk. Please have patience and feel free to apply again when your journal is a bit older.

4. You have no icons uploaded - thus the question: why join an icon community when you don't use the things?

5. Your have only icon/graphics communities on your friends-list.

6. There are no entries in your journal, or very few, and your comments status is also low. Basically, your journal is inactive.

7. We do not approve any requests from graphics communities. Please apply with your personal journal!

Please understand that approving or rejecting an application is nothing personal, we only make the decision based on our rules. Feel free to re-apply in case your request was rejected.

Note:
Some of the graphics posted in this community have been created a couple of years ago using another computer. Seeing that said computer is not around anymore, it is unfortunately impossible to give proper credit for all the brushes/textures/fonts that were used on those older graphics. Although we've managed to remember some of the sources, many others were lost.
