4. Portal
Damn it. I’m awake. It’s so dark. What time is it even? I fumble for my phone on the floor next to the bed. My bleary eyes can barely make out the display. 12:22 am. Fuck. I went to bed an hour ago. Groaning, I roll onto my back. Why am I awake? My husband is snoring beside me. I glare at him jealously. Then I remember the dream.
“We have been discovered.”
The words reverberate in my mind. Fear forms a tight knot in the pit of my stomach. I cannot shake the unease. It feels like I’m being watched. Not from inside the room-- from outside. A violent tremor rumbles through my body, and I pull the blanket protectively over my head. I sink back into sleep.
I am standing at the mouth of a path between two low hedges. Elegant stone urns frame the entrance, and small trees arch gracefully behind the hedges. Far away, a tiny pinprick beams. I need to move forward. Stepping onto the path, I lurch towards the light.

5. Quiet Friend
Something soft and feathery is tickling my face. Frowning, I try to brush it away. To no avail.
“Stop it” I grumble irritably.
A low husky chuckle caresses my ears.
“Wake up, sleepyhead. We need to talk.”
I unwillingly crack an eyelid. A weary battle-scarred face hovers above me. Multi-tinted brown-blondish hair frames a serious furrowed brow. Silver-blue eyes bore into me like focused lasers. If I didn’t recognize Sabine, I would have freaked out. But I did, and I knew I was safe. She was my Commander, and I was her faithful Lieutenant.
“What’s up, ma’am?” I mumble. My throat feels like it’s full of sand. “Did I get tranked again?”
She offered me a hand and pulled me to a sitting position. We were in a huge field beneath an iron sky. Cold wind ruffled the collar of her black uniform jacket. It blew strands of her silky hair across her cheeks and the coral flush of her lips. I looked away. No time to get distracted.
“Where are we now?”
Sitting back on her haunches, Sabine studied me closely.
“How are you feeling?”
I scowled.
“What d’ya think? I’m getting sick and tired of those assholes burning my memory.”
She nodded, compassion glowing in her impossible eyes.
“I know it sucks to be a Seer, Evangeline. But look at it this way… everybody wants you!”
I weakly attempt to smack her with my open palm, but I’m so dizzy I fall over. Sabine clucks at me.
“Take it easy, firebrand. We need to come up with a game plan quick.”
My eyes sharpen immediately on her guarded expression.
“Why? Are we exposed?”
She shakes her head tersely.
“Not us. Stratos.”
My eyes go wide in distress.
“Oh, shit, Sabine! We gotta go now!”
Her gentle hand steadies my shoulder.
“I know, and we will. But you have to get your bearings first. If I have to sling you over my shoulder and scoot, it’s not gonna help anything. Rest first.”
I continue scowling silently, unwillingly accepting that she’s right. She gazes at me, tenderness radiating from her metallic eyes. Suddenly, she moves in and kisses me. We fall back onto the dry whispery grass together.
Who am I when nobody needs anything from me? A broken shell. Stolen moments is what we have. I am grateful for them all.
