What is a postal code?
A postal code (also known as ZIP Code or postcode) is a series of digits or alphanumeric characters used in the postal addressing system to identify the geographic area where mail or parcels are delivered. The main purpose of postal codes is to help postal services sort, route, and deliver mail quickly and accurately.
In a standard postal address, the postal code is usually placed on the last line before the country name or after the province/city name. When entered correctly, the postal code helps the system automatically identify the delivery location, thereby minimizing errors during shipping.
Today, postal codes are not only used in the postal industry but also play an important role in many other fields such as e-commerce, logistics, geolocation, online service registration, international payments, and market data analysis.
History of postal codes
Before postal codes existed, mail sorting relied mainly on city names and detailed addresses. As population grew and mail volume increased, this method became slow and error-prone.
The first idea of dividing postal zones appeared in London (UK) in 1857, when the city was divided into areas such as N (North), S (South), E (East), W (West) to support faster mail sorting.
This zoning system was gradually expanded and became the foundation for the modern postal code system.
By the early 20th century, many countries began adopting zone code systems to manage mail in large cities. However, nationwide postal codes only emerged in the mid-20th century.
Key milestones in postal code history:
- 1932: Experimental postal code system introduced in the Soviet Union.
- 1941: Germany implemented nationwide postal codes.
- 1963: United States officially adopted the 5-digit ZIP Code system.
- 1970-1980: Many countries worldwide adopted national postal code systems.
Importance of postal codes
The adoption of postal codes has significantly reduced mail sorting time and enabled automation of parcel processing centers.
Postal codes are an essential component of the modern postal system, helping to accurately identify addresses and optimize the delivery of mail and goods. From simple zoning systems in 19th-century London, postal codes have evolved into a global network with millions of geographic codes.
Thanks to the coordination of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), countries can connect their postal systems to the international network, making cross-border mail and parcel delivery more convenient and efficient.
In Vietnam, the 5-digit postal code system plays an important role in address management, supporting postal services, logistics, and e-commerce. In the context of a rapidly developing digital economy, postal codes are increasingly becoming an indispensable part of geographic information infrastructure and the global shipping system.
